24 Feb — 28 Mar
The 2018 Season transports us to places we wouldn’t otherwise encounter (or even imagine). The eight plays traverse centuries of time, the breadth of our country, the expanse of the globe, and the inner workings of diverse and brilliant minds. In the coming year, you can be at the centre of a food fight at the Christmas dinner from Hell, evade pursuers across the Scottish Highlands, wrestle with a Kafkaesque bureaucracy in Tehran, help solve a 1960s murder mystery in the Western Australian Wheatbelt, become entangled in a 17th Century scientific feud, or sing melancholy love songs to the exotic Duke of a mythical realm. Be part of the magic of theatre. Be part of the 2018 Season at Queensland Theatre. Sam Strong Artistic Director

Synopsis With equal parts farce, clowning masterclass and heart-stopping noir thriller, The 39 Steps is Patrick Barlow’s hysterical stage adaptation of John Buchan’s classic novel and Hitchcock’s hit 1935 spy thriller film. This wonderfully deranged comedy features four actors, playing 139 roles of fast-paced fun, thrilling action and riotous invention. Set in 1930’s London, the story is a classic portrayal of one man’s flight from wrong accusation through a series of improbable adventures as he is pursued by authorities. The painfully British and devastatingly handsome, Richard Hannay finds himself in the clutches of a beautiful woman, Anabella Schmidt, who later reveals herself as a spy. She has uncovered a plot called The 39 Steps, but she is murdered clutching a map of Scotland. Richard Hannay takes on the adventure, wooing every attractive lady in sight and jumping through windows and onto trains as he tries to escape spies and cunning murderers, before finding love whilst handcuffed to a beautiful woman. Hannay must solve the mystery of the 39 steps and save his skin before it’s too late.

Welcome On its best nights, theatre gets very close to magic. And that’s just what has made The 39 Steps such a success over the years - theatrical wizardry. Sam Strong Artistic Director
This play has all the speedy sleight-of-hand of a street hustler, the cheeky charm of a cabaret card-sharp, and the epic reveals of a Las Vegas illusionist. Just like in the plot of any ripping adventure yarn, including this one, a remarkable series of events have fallen into line to allow us to bring Patrick Barlow’s adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s version of a John Buchan novel (whew!) to Queensland Theatre. First, I’m thrilled to have lured former Associate Director Jon Halpin back home, two years after he directed an acclaimed, record-breaking, box-office hit season of this play for the State Theatre Company of South Australia. Secondly, Jon knows the show like the back of his hand, and speaks its theatrical language fluently. It’s a genuine sandbox where a great director, cast and design team can play and be fiendishly inventive, pulling out all their tricks to bring this classic story to life. Last but not least, Jon has hand-picked a quartet of the very best of Queensland’s comic acting talent for this version.
Since it was written, about 13 years ago, The 39 Steps has been staged by hundreds of companies in dozens of countries, including on Broadway and the West End, and among its casts have been some of the greatest clowns and comedians working today. Putting any of my own bias aside, I don’t think it could be cast any more perfectly than the funny foursome Jon has assembled here in Brisbane. Everything’s in place for a great night out at the theatre. All you have to do is let yourself get swept along for the ride by this guilty pleasure of a show. Forget about everything outside these four walls for a couple of hours, and get sucked into the wildly entertaining world of The 39 Steps. Finally, a huge thank you to our long-time partner (and fellow lovers of comedy), Ord Minnett, for their generous production sponsorship. Enjoy, Sam

Alfred Hitchcock Writer and Director The 39 Steps film
Hitchcock quickly gained notoriety as a director who delivered suspense, twist endings, and dark subject matter.
Alfred Hitchcock was born in Leytonstone, England on August 13, 1899. After attending a technical school at 15, Hitchcock spent the first years of his career as a draftsman, advertising designer, and writer. An interest in photography led to him working in London's film industry, first as a title card designer for silent movies and, just five years later, as a director. In 1926, Hitchcock married his assistant director, Alma Reville, and in 1928 they had a daughter, Patricia. Hitchcock quickly gained notoriety as a director who delivered suspense, twist endings, and dark subject matter. His own personality and gallows humour were embedded in popular culture through interviews, film trailers, and cameo appearances in his own films. He was popular with audiences at home and abroad, and in 1939 the Hitchcock family moved to Hollywood. In the three decades that followed he would cement his legacy by directing and producing his most successful and enduring works. His television anthology, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, ran from 1955 to 1965 and made him a household name. During his career, he created over fifty feature films in a career that saw not only the development of Hitchcock's own distinctive directorial style, but also landmark innovations in cinema. In 1929, Blackmail was his first feature film with sound and in 1948, his first colour film was Rope. Hitchcock himself has been credited with pioneering many camera and editing techniques for peers and aspiring directors to emulate. Hitchcock collected many professional accolades including two Golden Globes, eight Laurel Awards, and five lifetime achievement awards. He was a five-time Academy Award nominee for Best Director and in 1940, his film Rebecca won the Oscar for Best Picture. In 1980, he received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. A husband, father, director, and the Master of Suspense, Sir Alfred Hitchcock passed away on April 29, 1980.

Nobby Dimon
On his website, Simon styles himself a “creator of dramatic works”; he enjoys a challenge and likes to be in on the birth of new projects, as he was with The 39 Steps.
Nobby Dimon is artistic director of North Country Theatre, the Richmond-based rural touring theatre company where the first version of this adaption of The 39 Steps was created. He has worked for more than 30 years for various theatres and companies, including Harrogate Theatre, Durham Theatre Company and Snap Theatre, as well as for the National Trust and English Heritage, primarily directing, devising and adapting, and occasionally acting. He has written more than 20 plays, including adaptations of The Lost World (2000), Northanger Abbey (2002), J L Carr’s A Month in the Country (2002), The Man Who Would Be King (2006) and D H Lawrence’s The Rocking Horse Winner (2012). In 2014, his play Bartle performed open-air in collaboration with Peer Gynt Theatre, Norway.
Original Concept
Original Concept
Currently, he is working on a commission to create the script for another comedy version of a film classic -working title: Gone with the - What the?. Earlier in his career, he was the founder and artistic director of Midsommer Actors’ Company. Throughout the 1990s, Midsommer put on site-specific performances in some amazingly atmospheric places; projects included: The Tempest on the tidal island of Hilbre, Wirral, and an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s The Woodlanders, presented deep in a forest near Hebden Bridge. Among his other plays which toured with Midsommer were Gawain And The Green Knight, written entirely in verse; The Wonderland Adventures Of Alice, which was also produced by the London Bubble; and The Hound Of The Baskervilles, later produced by the Dukes Playhouse, Lancaster. The Hound play-script was published last year by MX Publishing. Simon met Nobby Dimon while devising a piece for Harrogate Theatre in 1995, and, being a lifelong Buchan and Hitchcock fan, immediately offered his services as writer for the original The 39 Steps team. The play triumphantly toured small theatres with North Country Theatre for two years before continuing on its remarkable road to worldwide success. With Found Theatre, Simon has created stage adaptations of Oscar Wilde’s The Fisherman and His Soul and Charles Dickens’s ghost story The Signalman. His other recent commissions include: Kind Hearts for Rocket Theatre in Manchester and Sward!, a musical play about hay meadows, which was toured by Blaize across the rural north of England, which is where Simon lives.

THE 39 STEPS
State Theatre Company South Australia Full Page AD
Director’s Note “And we shall deliberately fail and triumph in equally stupid and hilarious meausures." Jon Halpin Director
This is my fourth outing as director on a Patrick Barlow play; two different productions of The Messiah (in 2002 and then 2006) and two productions of The 39 Steps, first for State Theatre Company of South Australia in 2016 and now this production. I must say, I feel very blessed to be able to revisit his work and especially this play.
The thought of working with Hugh, Liz, Bryan and Leon, pulling apart the film scene by scene, inventing the silliest and cleverest ways to put this work before an audience is an utter joy. To have the support and ingenuity of Ailsa Paterson, David Murray and Stuart Day offering creative and hilarious solutions to unstageable conundrums has likewise been a sheer delight.
Patrick has an uncanny knack for putting madcap, slapstick and almost silly comedy up on stage, but always with an integrity and respect for the source material. In The Messiah, it’s the nativity plays, and The 39 Steps is of course Hitchcock’s 1935 seminal classic film. Although the action may be ridiculous and unhinged, at all times the story of Richard Hannay’s dangerous journey to learn the meaning of the 39 steps is the beating heart of the play.
Finally, a big thanks to Sam and the entire mob at Queensland Theatre for inviting me back to direct my 21st play for the company (but first in seven years). Thanks also for the opportunity to revisit and reimagine one of the most enjoyable times I’ve had in a rehearsal room and for welcoming me back to this company that is so close to my heart.
We have approached this production from the position that the movie, a film that is very much the progenitor of many action films we know today, is impossible to stage. It is such an iconic piece of cinema and so utterly filmic, that to attempt to stage it is sheer folly. But stage it we shall. And we shall deliberately fail and triumph in equally stupid and hilarious measures.
