The 2018 Season transports us to places we wouldn’t otherwise encounter (or even imagine). The eight plays traverse centuries of time, the breadth of our country, the expanse of the globe, and the inner workings of diverse and brilliant minds. In the remaining shows of the year, you can still revel in the greatest sporting triumph of all time, wrestle with a Kafkaesque bureaucracy in Tehran, help solve a 1960s murder mystery in the Western Australian Wheatbelt, and become entangled in the 17th Century scientific feud that changed our universe forever. Be part of the magic of theatre. Be part of the 2018 Season at Queensland Theatre. Sam Strong Artistic Director

Synopsis Orsino, Duke of lllyria, is in love with the Countess Olivia. She has forsworn men's company while she mourns the death of her brother, and is refusing all of his advances. Nearby, Viola, a young woman, laments the loss of her twin brother after being shipwrecked, but resolves to fend for herself by dressing as a boy and working as a page to Duke Orsino.

Orsino sends his new page Cesario (Viola in disguise) to court Olivia for him. Cesario/Viola goes unwillingly as she has fallen in love with her master Orsino. Olivia once again rejects Orsino, but falls in love with Cesario, believing he is male. Meanwhile, Olivia's uncle Sir Toby Belch, her servant Maria, and Sir Toby's friend Sir Andrew Aguecheek, plot to expose the self-love and aspirations of Olivia’s head steward Malvolio, who disapproves of their hard partying. Together, they write a letter to Malvolio tricking him into thinking that Olivia loves him. The letter demands that Malvolio appear in yellow stockings, cross-gartered, and smiling. Meanwhile, Viola's twin brother, Sebastian, who has also survived the shipwreck has made his way to Illyria, followed by his new found companion Antonio, a notable pirate. Sir Andrew’s affections for Olivia lead him to be jealous of Cesario, and he decides to declare a duel between them. Thanks to a prank by Sir Toby, both Andrew and Cesario believe that their opponent intends to fight to the death.

Antonio enters mistaking Cesario for Sebastian, intervenes to defend his friend, and is arrested by Orsino's men. Later, Sebastian comes along and is attacked by Sir Andrew, thinking him to be Cesario. Olivia intervenes and invites Sebastian into the house, thinking him to be Cesario, and Olivia and Sebastian are married that night. Malvolio, held in a dark room for being a madman, is psychologically tortured by Maria, Sir Toby, and Feste, the court fool, who dresses up as a priest to convince Malvolio that he is in fact mad. Antonio is brought to Orsino, and upon seeing Cesario, he accuses him of betrayal. Then, the real Sebastian arrives to apologise for fighting Sir Toby. The twins see each other and discover that they are both alive. The play ends with Orsino approving the union between Olivia and Sebastian and, realising his own attraction to 'Cesario', promising that once she is dressed as a woman again, they will be married as well. Malvolio enters and finding Maria's letter to be fraudulent, promises revenge.

Dear friends It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the theatre in my new role of Executive Director and to thank you for your warm messages of congratulations. Amanda Jolly Executive Director

As many of you know, I have been working at Queensland Theatre for several years now as Deputy Executive Director and Philanthropy Manager and have been privileged to get to know some of you personally. I am immensely proud of the contribution we make to the cultural life of Queensland and I look forward to many more passionate foyer conversations about our productions and our company. Tonight you will experience Sam’s magnificent, new production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, a show destined to be a highlight in our company’s interpretation of the Bard. In a play which opens with “If music be the food of love, play on; give me excess of it…” you would expect this element to be central, and you will not be disappointed. We have once again teamed up with Tim Finn (responsible for the beautiful music for Ladies in Black), who has written a suite of exquisite new songs to deepen our enjoyment of this work. Tim is joined by another outstanding New Zealand creative talent, designer Tracy Grant Lord (working with us for the first time), who has skilfully brought to life the magical realm of Illyria. Add to this mix a cast complete with many of Queensland’s finest actors, musicians and creatives and you will see why this production is a standout. A work of this scale would not be possible without our partners, QPAC and Griffith University. We are now in our 17th year of partnership with Griffith, a relationship based on our mutual commitment to supporting the career pathways of young people, especially in the arts. QPAC are again joining us on this production with Tim Finn, following their partnership on Ladies in Black. Above all, this production is a sensual experience – from the sheer beauty of its music and language, to the visually dazzling world of Ilyria and the humour and humanity of the story. Sit back, let yourself be enchanted and transported by the power (and pain) of love in all its stages and guises. Amanda

Message from QPAC's Chief Executive Welcome to QPAC and to this performance of Queensland Theatre’s Twelfth Night.

John Kotzas Chief Executive, QPAC

The first recorded performance of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night was in 1602, more than 400 years ago. The production you’re about to see has the same sense of madcap adventure, mistaken identity and unrequited love. Directed by Queensland Theatre’s Artistic Director, Sam Strong, this production also features new songs by legendary composer Tim Finn. Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s darker comedies, it is a testament to the genius of the work that four centuries after it first appeared, the play continues to be a popular choice in the repertory of theatre companies. As always, on behalf of all at QPAC, it is our very great pleasure to work with our creative colleagues from Queensland Theatre to present our audiences with superb theatre experiences. The theatre is a special place where thought is free*, where we take a brief holiday from our everyday lives; it’s a place for us to affirm our beliefs, or perhaps challenge what we thought we knew. I hope you enjoy this performance of Twelfth Night and look forward to welcoming you back to QPAC again soon. * Act I, Scene iii

Director's Note Twelfth Night is so rich and complex, that working on it is like directing multiple plays at once. Sam Strong Director

On the one hand, it’s deliciously funny. In this, his final and most exquisite comedy, Shakespeare has honed the tropes he has employed across other plays – cross-dressed wooing, mistaken identity, and characters being tricked. On the other hand, if Twelfth Night is a comedy, it is deeply melancholy. For all the beautiful romantic couplings of the finale, there are others who are left behind or forgotten. The profoundly moving reunion of the twins is offset with a lingering unease about how far the ‘sport royal’ has been taken. Grief and mortality cast a shadow over – and give a certain reckless energy to – the last days of the party (the time of year that the Twelfth Night traditionally represented). For a play that is 400 years old, Twelfth Night also feels remarkably contemporary. The surtitle, What You Will, neatly captures the play’s fluid approach to gender and sexuality – a fluidity we have taken even further in this production. It also captures the way the action is driven by desire. Even the comic scenes of Twelfth Night are shot through with the energy of someone wanting someone else.

Twelfth Night was Shakespeare’s most musical play long before we got to it. Exploring the extent of the musical universe with Tim Finn (and Music Supervisor, Orchestrator and Arranger James Dobinson) has been delightful. Such is Tim’s connection with the material that he seems to be writing music and lyrics from within Shakespeare’s play – so much so that it can be difficult to spot where Finn begins and Shakespeare ends. I think this is due to the perfect fit between Tim’s preoccupations and range as a songwriter and the tonal fluctuations of the play. Both Tim and Twelfth Night are able, in the course of one evening, to traverse the thrill of falling in love, the pain of loss, and the mischievous silliness of drunkards. The design team and I have resisted the idea of setting Twelfth Night in too concrete a time or place. Rather, our Illyria is closer to what the name might have conjured for a Shakespearean audience – a magical and slightly dangerous ‘other’ world, in our case part classical Adriatic and part the crumbling sexiness of Havana. One of the greatest pieces of advice I ever received was that the mood of a rehearsal room will show up on stage. If this is the case, then given the level of play, invention and joy that has gone into the making of Twelfth Night, you’re in for a treat. If music be the food of love, play on indeed. Sam

Composer’s Note Sam Strong asked me if I’d like to compose for Twelfth Night. I had neither seen nor read the play. I found a copy and fell in love. Tim Finn Composer

My first self-imposed task was to set the beautiful lines Shakespeare had written for Feste to sing. “O Mistress Mine” happened to sit well over a tune I had been playing only that morning. “Come Away Death” and “Hey Ho The Wind And The Rain” soon followed. I recorded quick demos and sent them to Sam who shared my excitement. He also vigorously encouraged me to write new songs as I responded to the text. The next few weeks were productive. I read Peter Ackroyd’s brilliant biography and immersed myself thoroughly in Shakespeare’s world. Ackroyd seemed to be saying, to me at least, that it was important to collaborate in the spirit of the Elizabethan age. To work in a white heat. I was fascinated to read in the introduction of my Oxford version that it was a “common theatrical experience that around the middle of the play the rhythm seems to falter, especially in the very long 3.4.”

Kurt Phelan, Kevin Spink

I thought, “How could Shakespeare get anything wrong?” I took a good look at the section and decided to engage. “There’s No Remedy” was my humble attempt to join the long procession of “editors” who have been inspired to make an incursion. Finally, I was excited to read that some consider Shakespeare to be the father of music-theatre. He obviously loved music and knew its invisible powers intimately. And Twelfth Night, being thought of as one of his most musical plays, has felt like a good place for me to try my hand. Thanks Queensland Theatre for offering me another rich experience. To quote Nabokov, I feel like I have been invited into a realm of “aesthetic bliss.”

Responding Artist note “If music be the food of love, play on!” Andrew Stafford Responding Artist

This command, the opening line by Duke Orsino in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, has resonated for centuries. Perhaps you’ve heard or used those words yourself down the years, without knowing their origin. I say that because – as a musical glutton as well as a writer who, somehow, managed to avoid Shakespeare growing up – I know that I have. “Give me excess of it, that surfeiting, that appetite may sicken, and so die,” Orsino continues. This production of Twelfth Night has hooked me for life. It’s part sexual farce and part musical, with music for Shakespeare’s original snatches of verse provided by Split Enz and Crowded House legend Tim Finn, who also contributes a few entirely new songs of his own. Finn’s songs are both tender and playful, alternately celebrating love and reflecting back our contemporary debates around gender identity, sexual fluidity and the pace of social change. Feste sings a song that pokes gentle fun at the bewilderment of an older world-view: Once upon a time it was clear Who I was and how I got here Now I’m not so sure anymore The new normal Sounds a bit queer! These songs underline the real message of Twelfth Night: that the human heart is a glutton, too, and that it wants what it wants. Just to add extra twist to this masterpiece of multiple mistaken identities, there’s an additional switcheroo: the character of Malvolio is re-cast as a woman, giving the play a delicious new angle. These changes serve to both bring Twelfth Night into the present and underline the timelessness of its theme in an age of both resistance and radical acceptance that love is indeed love. So, play on, indeed. Or, in the words of a 20th century bard: Everybody’s got a hungry heart.

Regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, New Zealand native Tim Finn continues to embrace the true definition of a renaissance man while fuelling an allinclusive, creative fire that constantly drives him onwards and upwards. Having established himself in the early 1970s as a founding member of art-pop-rock pioneers Split Enz and later as a member of the internationally successful band Crowded House (alongside brother Neil), Finn has penned some of the most treasured songs in contemporary music. The likes of I See Red, Poor Boy, My Mistake, Dirty Creature, I Hope I Never and Six Months In A Leaky Boat immediately come to mind. His time in Crowded House, established around the recording of the acclaimed Woodface album, was mostly co-written with his brother and included the timeless classics Weather With You, It’s Only Natural and Chocolate Cake. Add to this, an incredibly successful solo career that continues to mature and has delivered songs such as Fraction Too Much Friction, Made My Day, Persuasion and Not Even Close. Finn has toured the world and worked with some of the industry’s most accomplished artists and producers.

Sam Strong, Marnie McDonald

In recent years Finn has been helping develop new work for theatre. This has included the successful musical Ladies in Black, which received a Helpmann Award for Best Australian New Work. Finn, along with NZ playwright Ken Duncan and film-maker Sue Healey has co-written and performed in the one-man show White Cloud, a poetic examination of family and identity; The Fiery Maze, a raw and provocative song cycle written with the late Dorothy Porter, which had its premiere at Malthouse Theatre in 2016, and was picked up for inclusion in the 2017 Sydney Festival. He is currently developing a number of other music, film and theatre projects for release in 2019/2020. Who knows what is next for Tim Finn? One thing is for certain, he is showing no signs of slowing and the desire to create, write and perform is as strong as it ever was.
