FLASHING LIGHTS

FINDING A PARTNER

Fireflies (which are actually a type of beetle, found throughout the world) can light up their tails and flash them on and off. In the dark, the males fly through the air, flashing light patterns, while females sit on plants nearby and flash a message back to help the males find them.

When they want to have babies, most animals have to find a partner to mate with – the same way many humans have a boyfriend or girlfriend, or get married. Animals often call or sing to each other to help them find a mate – songbirds, whales and lemurs do this. But some animals have much weirder ways to tell other animals in their species that they’re looking for a partner...

Each firefly species makes its own pattern. This helps males and females of the same species to find each other.

LOOKING GOOD!

Many male animals use visual displays to show off how beautiful or colourful they are to females. This ‘show’ often includes hopping or flying about, or waving limbs in the air, as a sign of strength and agility.

PENGUIN PRESENTS

Gentoo penguins live on the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands. When a male wants a mate, he finds a smooth pebble to give to a female he likes. If she’s impressed, she’ll use it to help build her nest, and accept the male as a mate. Sometimes, to get a good pebble, the male steals one from another nest!

For his amazing courtship display, the male superb bird of paradise of Papua New Guinea transforms himself from this…

PORCUPINE WEE Porcupines, both the Old World species from southern Europe, Asia and Africa, and the New World porcupine from North, South and Central America, might have the most unusual way of getting themselves a mate. When a male sees a female he likes, he wees on her! If she likes the smell, she agrees to mate with him.

Will this pebble be good enough?

…to this! He then hops about in this position, while the female watches.

Male fiddler crabs, found on beaches throughout the world, have one small claw, and one huge, colourful one. To impress females, they wave their giant claws around, and the females choose the males they like best.

The peacock spider from Australia has one of the most amazing courtship displays in the world. As well as waving two of his legs in the air, he lifts up and spreads out his beautiful, brightly coloured tail flap.

USING TOOLS

Most animals use sticks or stones as they are, but some animals actually adapt the things they find to make their own tools, as humans do.

DEADLY BOXING GLOVES

The boxer crab, from the Indian and Pacific oceans, appears to be wearing large, frilly boxing gloves! In fact, it is holding a pair of marine invertebrates known as sea anemones in its pincers. These stinging anemone ‘gloves’ scare off any hungry predators.

Crows have been filmed bending the end of a twig into a hook. They then use their tool to ‘fish’ tasty insect larvae out of holes in tree trunks.

AMAZING ORANGUTANS

The orangutan is a great ape, like chimpanzees, gorillas and humans. Its name means ‘person of the forest’, as it often seems very human-like. It’s found in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, and it’s a star tool-user.

AT THE DINNER TABLE

Sea otters in the North Pacific Ocean dive underwater to collect shellfish, such as mussels and abalones. Back at the surface, the otters float on their backs and use their stomachs as dinner tables! Some otters keep their own special stones, which they use to hammer the shellfish open. They sometimes also use stones to prise off shells that are stuck to rocks.

The orangutan’s tool tactics include:

Using a large leaf as an umbrella or rain hat.

Sea anemones offer protection for these creative crabs.

MAKING TOOLS

Millions of years ago, our human ancestors began making tools, such as hammers, knives, axes and spears, from stone and wood. People used to think this made humans different from other animals, but now we know that plenty of animals also use tools, sometimes in surprisingly similar ways to us.

Using a sharp stick or stone to open a tough-skinned fruit.

The sea otters break open the shells then eat the shellfish from the inside.

Using a stick as a spear to try to catch fish.

COCONUT CAMPER

Carrying Bundling leaves together to make a sponge for wiping their faces and soaking up water.

Near Indonesia, scientists diving in the ocean were amazed when they saw veined octopuses using coconut shells as portable shelters. The shells had collected on the seabed after falling from trees. The octopuses walked along clutching two shell halves in their tentacles. To stop for a rest, they climbed inside the shells and pulled them closed. Some could even roll along inside the shell shelter! This allows the octopus to get around safely, as it can hide and escape from predators. Sheltering

CAUGHT IN A NET

F IN DIN G FO O D When humans need food, we farm, hunt, forage, fish or simply go to the shops. Animals aren’t that different (except for the shop part!). Lots of animals munch on plants, store nuts and seeds for later, or catch other animals to eat. But a few have truly surprising, clever and cunning ways to get the food they need.

The whale makes a circle of bubbles around the fish, then rises up inside the ‘net’ to eat the trapped prey.

Some animals grab their prey with sharp teeth or claws, but humpback whales catch their food in a ‘net’, like a human catching fish! These whales trap tiny fish and sea creatures like plankton and krill in a ‘bubble net’. They swim around a shoal of fish, blowing bubbles that rise up to the water surface. The fish won’t swim through the bubbles, so they stay inside, and the whales snap them up.

ANIMAL FARMERS

READY… AIM… FIRE!

Some ants actually farm their food, like we do. And some ants even farm other animals – tiny insects called aphids. They herd the aphids around on plants, letting them feed and guarding them from hungry predators. Then they ‘milk’ the aphids, by stroking them with their antennae to make them release a sweet liquid called honeydew, which the ants feed on. Scientists have even found that chemicals in the ants’ footprints slow the aphids down and make them easier to herd and control!

Archer fish can live in fresh waters and salt waters and are often found in Asia and Australia. They don’t prey on fellow water creatures. Instead, they eat insects that live on land, and they catch them by shooting at them! They don’t actually have a bow and arrow like human archers – instead, they spit a stream of water up into the air, to knock insects off twigs and leaves into the water where they can gobble them up.

The archer fish has very good eyesight and a deadly accurate aim. It has been known to hit insects sitting up to 3 metres above the water’s surface.

STUNNED BY SOUND

The pistol shrimp lives in shallow tropical waters. It has one normal pincer and one enormous, superstrong pincer, which it snaps at high speed to make an incredibly loud noise. This creates a shock wave that stuns its prey, such as small crabs and sea worms, so that the shrimp can easily grab them.

The pistol shrimp’s snapping pincer can grow up to half the length of its body, and the noise it makes when it snaps is louder than a gunshot.

The snapping claw creates a bubble ‘bullet’ that shoots at the prey, stunning and paralyzing it.

Humpback whales roam in oceans all over the world. These creatures don’t have teeth; instead, they have baleen plates – fringed brushes that help them to eat. The whales take gigantic gulps of water and prey and the baleen plates trap the prey and allow the water to filter out.

24

These ants are herding a group of aphids on a plant stem.

CLEANER FOR HIRE

KEEPIN G C LEA N

All this washing is hard work, but some animals don’t need to bother. Instead, they have a cleaner! This amazing teamwork happens on land and underwater too.

We humans have to keep ourselves clean, and animals are the same. In fact, staying clean can be extra important for animals, to make sure their prey or predators can’t smell them, or to get rid of parasites such as lice. But without bathrooms, soap or shampoo, what do they do?

Oxpecker birds are found in African savannahs. They often sit on large animals, such as gnus, zebras and giraffes and nibble on parasites found on their skin.

BODY WASH

Bats spend lots of time grooming. They lick their fur, even their ears – all while hanging upside down.

If you have a pet cat, you’ve probably seen it wash by licking itself all over. Many wild animals do this too, including lions and tigers, as well as bats, rats and bears. They’ll also lick their babies to give them a wash.

Big cats such as leopards have tongues with stiff hairs on them that act like a comb as they lick their fur.

Gnus (also called wildebeests) are large African antelopes with horns, long tails and bushy beards. Geckos are a type of lizard. They use their tongues to give their eyeballs a good wash. When moray eels need a clean they head to a ‘cleaning station’, part of a coral reef where cleaner wrasse fish live. The eels let the wrasse nibble dead skin and parasites from their bodies, and sometimes from inside their mouths too! In return, the wrasse get a meal, as dead skin and creepy-crawlies are their favourite food!

BIRD BATH

This Javan myna bird from South-east Asia has caught a millipede. But this isn’t just a tasty snack...

Birds do something called preening to stay clean. They push their beaks through all their feathers, removing parasites, smoothing the feathers down and arranging them in the right order. Some birds even do a strange thing called ‘anting’. They pick up ants or millipedes, and use them to ‘de-bug’ themselves.

...the bird rubs the insect on its feathers, making it release stinging chemicals that kill germs and keep parasites away. Then, once it’s nice and clean, the myna bird sometimes gobbles up the millipede!

22

In Africa, hippos take mud baths. That might seem dirty, but the mud actually protects against biting insects and also works as a sunscreen.

BIZARRE BATHS

Humans love a relaxing bubble bath, but did you know animals have baths too? In Japan, monkeys called Japanese macaques enjoy sitting in natural hot springs, just like people in a hot tub!

I really enjoy making my clients, to help them get fitter and a difference to people’s lives.

My client isn’t too happy when I arrive. She is finding it tough to exercise every day, and I notice she’s losing interest. I give her some new exercises to boost her enthusiasm. In my job, it’s really important to be able to understand and motivate people.

5

In the afternoon I have a few hours to myself—most of my clients want to see me before or after work, so I often use the afternoons to catch up on paperwork. I type up some notes and I check my emails and my website, responding to any enquiries from potential new clients.

I am self-employed,

1

It’s 6:00 a.m. and I’m up and ready. My first client likes to start early, before she goes to work. Luckily, I’m an early riser so I don’t mind!

2

I’m doing some interval training with my client today—a mix of jogging and sprinting. I run with her—I need to be fit so I can be a good role model. I observe what progress she’s making, and at the end of the session we’ll discuss any changes to her routine.

While my first client was young and energetic, my next session is with a lady in her sixties who’s not keen on the gym or sports but wants to stay active. I’ve given her some daily exercises she can do at home, where she’s more comfortable, and today I’m paying her a visit to see how she’s getting on.

At 6:00 p.m. I go to the gym for my last session of the day. I’m meeting a new client, a man in his thirties. He’s worried about his health so we try out a few fitness machines to see what he can or can’t do. I need to understand his fitness level first so I can create the right training program for him. I make lots of notes as I watch. I work with 30 different people during the week and can’t remember everything!

7

By the end of the session, my client is tired but growing in confidence. I give him some exercises to do himself until we meet again next week, and I also give him a diet plan to help him make sure he is eating healthily.

After a 35-minute work out of my own, I head home for the day. I can’t wait for a good meal and well-earned rest on the sofa. I know all this exercise will give me a great night’s sleep!

1. Which red line on the track is the longest? Is it the one at the front, or the one at the back?

Trains used to be powered by steam, sending out clouds of steam as they travelled. A famous steam train was the Flying Scotsman. In 1934, it became the first train in Britain to reach a speed of 160 kilometres per hour.

The Rocket was built in 1829. It became famous after winning a competition for its design, which included wooden pannels and a tall funnel. It reached a speed of 47 kilometres per hour, which was very fast at the time.

3

Japan’s Shinkansen train is famous for being on time. It is also known as the bullet train. It reaches speeds of 320 kilometres per hour and has a long, rounded nose.

This book shows children a range of simple yoga poses and mindfulness techniques through a gentle narrative. A sluggish bear emerges from hibernation and seeks a way to energize, think clearly, stay calm, be positive and finally relax before bedtime. As he goes through the forest, he meets a variety of animal friends who show him how to achieve these states of mind through simple yoga poses, which are demonstrated in the artwork by the animals and explained in text written by an expert. Christiane Kerr has written and produced eight audio

relaxation CDs for children. Christiane is the founder of Calm for Kids, which she set up in 1998. Calm for Kids offers training courses for school teachers, yoga teachers and parents who want to bring the benefits of yoga and mindfulness to children and young people.
