The American Civil War The Story You Must Understand to Make Sense of Modern America

Adam Smith The civil war in North America between 1861 and 1865 cost around three quarters of a million lives. But the war’s historical significance doesn’t just lie in the scale of the violence: it is the great American story. For Americans, in the words of the historian Shelby Foote, it was the ‘crossroads of our being’. Whether the issue is the continuing struggle for racial equality, the scope of government, the place of violence in American life or the potential for war to achieve noble ends, the paths the United States has taken since the civil war can be traced back to those brutal battles 150 years ago.

The Normans How William the Conqueror Changed Britain Forever

Daniel Gerrard In this short, highly entertaining book, Daniel Gerrard tells the story of Britain before, during and after the Conquest, and explains how the Norman kings built on a highly effective Anglo Saxon framework to lay the foundations of modern Britain.

Churchill A Brilliantly Concise Account of One of History’s Most Famous Men

Paul Addison Winston Churchill was the greatest wartime prime minister in Britain’s history. To his defenders he was not only the man who saved the West from the tyranny of Nazi Germany, but an exceptional human being, abounding in physical and moral courage, a genius who stood head and shoulders above his rivals. To his detractors, he was more a liability than an asset in World War Two, sacrificing the interests of Britain to those of the Soviet Union and the United States. In this short, incisive guide, Paul Addison, the author of the Dictionary for National Biography entry on Churchill, analyses his extraordinary career and looks at the radically different ways in which historians have seen him.

SOUTH The Illustrated Story of Shackleton’s Last Expedition 1914–1917 Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton A stunning coffee-table edition of Ernest Shackleton’s South, updated to include expedition photos found in the Antarctic ice.

Voyageur Press 978-0-7603-6482-6 £16.99/$24.99 US/$32.99 CAN 384 pages, 254 x 203 mm, Trade Paperback 200 b/w & colour photographs Rights: World Biography & Autobiography/Adventurers & Explorers

This beautifully produced edition of an adventure classic is now available in paperback to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the original publication! In 1914, the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton announced an ambitious plan to lead the first expedition across Antarctica from the Atlantic to the Pacific via the South Pole. South is the remarkable tale of that ill-fated journey, told in Shackleton’s own words, and illustrated here with the famous photography of Frank Hurley, as well as modern imagery of the fauna, and vistas that the adventurers encountered. New to this edition are the 10 centuryold images taken by Shackleton’s Ross Sea Party and discovered in Antarctica in 2013. The travails suffered by Shackleton’s men were mind-boggling, but Shackleton’s decisive action transformed him from arctic adventurer to an icon of leadership whose example has endured the ages. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was born in Ireland in 1874 and raised mostly in London. He led three expeditions to the Antarctic. He died of a heart attack in 1922 while setting out on his fourth expedition. Frank Hurley (1885–1962) was a native Australian who served as a photographer on several Antarctic expeditions with Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton. He also worked as a war photographer with the Australian military forces during both World Wars. He was the official photographer on Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition and was known for his pioneering use of the early Paget colour photography process.

JOURNEY Lizzy Hawker

This is the story of the pain and euphoria of an incredible achievement: a gruelling run through the highest mountain range in the world, c.1,000 miles with 100,000m ascent in less than 42 days.

White Lion Publishing 978-1-78131-744-0 £18.00/$25.00 US/$32.00 CAN 304 pages, 216 x 135 mm, Hardcover Book 16-page plate section Rights: World Sports & Recreation/Running & Jogging

Journey is the story of the ambition, pain and euphoria of an incredible achievement: a non-stop run along the highest mountain range in the world, alone. In 42 days of constant running Lizzy Hawker became the first person to run the full length of the Great Himalaya Trail’s highest pass, a staggering 1,000 miles with 100,000m ascent, crossing twelve 5,000m passes in less than 42 days carrying nothing but the bare essentials. Battling excruciating blisters, a horrifying episode of snow-blindness – leaving Lizzy without sight for over thirty-six hours – and running through hunger and severe drowsiness, one of Britain’s finest ultra-runners, Lizzy Hawker, took on a challenge beyond the realms of the imagination. In a vivid account of this remarkable record, Lizzy describes how she conquered her fears and traversed what few others have come close to achieving. Endurance has always been a way of life for Lizzy Hawker, not only a sport, and her enduring passion is for the mountains and wilderness. Having trained as an environmental scientist she ‘fell’ into the world of ultra and endurance running almost by chance. Her motivation is to run simply for the love of it, with heart and soul as well as head and legs, and to try to share that joy with others.

Inspiring female voices that have changed our world, and started a new conversation. So Here I Am brings together empowering speeches by women throughout history up to the present day. This is a celebration of women speaking up; within politics, science, human rights, TV and media – discussing everything from free love, anti-war, discoveries, race, gender and women’s rights. With evocative and powerful illustrations from Brazilian artist, Camila Pinheiro, this anthology of great women – whose own achievements speak for themselves – is timely and important. This shot of inspiration serves as a reminder that despite all adversity, nevertheless, she persisted. Anna Russell is a member of the editorial staff of The New Yorker. She previously covered arts and culture for the Wall Street Journal in London. Camila Pinheiro is an illustrator, artist and mother living in São Paulo, Brazil. With a background in fashion and luxury brands, everything she produces has to have a narrative, a habit she developed in the marketing industry. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE February 2019

30-SECOND… PAPERBACK IVY PRESS The most thought-provoking theories, each explained in 30 seconds. One of the most effective modern reference series ever published is presented here in a sleek new livery – whatever your chosen subject, the 30-Second… paperback series will serve you up an appetizing menu: an overview for starters, entrées that deal with the meat of the matter, and an easily digested overview for dessert. It’s fine dining for the mind, served up as fast food for those in a hurry.

30-Second Jazz Dave Gelly 30-Second Jazz explains, in easy, short riffs that keep you engaged, taking readers from the African-American roots of jazz all the way to today’s global mix of musicians and styles. Along the way, it looks at the shape, style, and instruments of jazz, at key personalities and recordings in the jazz canon – and at what might be expected next from this most diverse of musical forms.

All titles: March 2019 £9.99 160 pages, 195 x 150 mm, Paperback 60 photographs Rights: World 30-Second Jazz 978-1-78240-753-9 30-Second Napoleon 978-1-78240-755-3 30-Second Weather 978-1-78240-754-6 30-Second Opera 978-1-78240-756-0

30-Second Napoleon Professor Charles Esdaile 30-Second Napoleon presents an engrossing introduction to one of the most recognizable figures in history and one of extraordinary interest whichever point of view you take, romantic or pragmatic: one who did much to modernize Europe, and who stood for both a powerful state and for rational and efficient government, plus such principles as equality before the law and the career open to talent – achievements that explain his continued fascination for so many people.

30-Second Weather Professor Adam Scaife If you only have 30 seconds, there is time – using this book – to make sense of the science behind the seeming vagaries of the weather, the controversies, predictions and forecasts for climate change that shape our day-to-day experiences of the great outdoors. Ever since Aristotle first tried to explain the forces that seem to fall from the heavens, meteorology has opened up the study of weather, and caused disputes over the reasons why seasons change, where precipitation falls, why winds blow and when the sun shines. From halcyon days to hurricanes, supercells to silver linings, global warming to giant hailstones, here is the ultimate guide to a near-universal preoccupation: what’s the weather like?

30-Second Opera Hugo Shirley Live operatic performance was once part of popular culture yet in modern times it has become caricatured as exclusive, overwhelming and, often, very very long. 30-Second Opera raises the curtain so that anyone can enjoy opera, classical or contemporary, without the elitism. Compiled by opera buffs, not the bourgeoisie, it serves up all you need to enjoy the spectacle, the music, and above all the voices – from Farinelli to femme fatale.

30-Second Beer Sophie Atherton Mutli-million dollar branded or small-scale craft creation? Lager or ale? Boldly quaffed or genteelly sipped? However you enjoy your beer, you may not know as much about it as you think. 30-Second Beer is here to enlighten you, with a trip around the world’s beers, a look at brewing history, a dissection of the different sorts of brew and their unique characteristics, and an up-to-date overview of the current craft scene and the various (and ever-changing) fashions in beer drinking. 50 topics, divided under seven chapter headings, offering short, witty summaries, whether covering the basics or trade secrets. You’ll pick up the knowledge without noticing – and by the time you reach the last page, you’ll be able to hold your own with local beer experts anywhere in the world.

30-Second Cinema Pamela Wilkinson Are you an art-movie buff or a blockbuster enthusiast? Can you reel off a list of New Wave masterpieces, or are you more interested in classic Westerns? Most of us love the movies in one form or another, but very few of us have the all-round knowledge we’d like. 30-Second Cinema offers an immersion course, served up in neat, entertaining shorts. These 50 topics deal with cinema’s beginnings, with its growth as an industry, with key stars and producers, with global movements – from German Expressionism to New Hollywood – and with the movies as a business. By the time you’ve worked your way through, you’ll be able to identify the work of George Melies, define auteur theory or mumblecore in a couple of pithy phrases, and you’ll have broadened your knowledge of global cinema to embrace not only Bollywood but Nollywood, too. All in the time it takes to watch a couple of trailers.

30-Second Climate Joanna D. Haigh CBE FRS Weather and climate are not the same. Weather is what occurs outdoors on a daily basis and is unpredictable from one week to the next, whereas climate follows a stable pattern that is developed over centuries. The planet is divided into climate zones – tropical, temperate and polar – based on temperature differences with distance from the equator where the sun is most intense and temperature affects humidity, precipitation, cloudiness and wind. To understand what drives our climate, scientists study the atmosphere, the oceans, biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere. 30-Second Climate is an immediately accessible guide to the 50 key factors affecting Earth’s climate, past, present and future, each explained in half a minute. From atmospheric circulation to zero carbon, this is the quickest way to know your planet.

FAMILY FORAGING A Fun Guide to Gathering and Eating Plants David Hamilton A fun, fascinating and functional guide to getting out and about and foraging as a family.

White Lion Publishing 978-0-7112-4015-5 £16.99 144 pages, 225 x 170 mm, Flexi-Bind Rights: World excl. US & Canada Crafts & Hobbies/Crafts for Children

From Darwin to David Attenborough, many naturalists built their careers on a curiosity which began in early childhood. However, in this digital age our children can all too easily become isolated from meaningful contact with both the natural world and the people around them. Foraging for wild food can help rebalance our lives and a day gathering blackberries, picked in the wild, can be a great way to reconnect with family and nature. With clear information, instructions and illustrations, this book focuses on 30 edible plants commonly found in our parks, woodlands and hedgerows. It shows you how to identify them safely and gather them to make delicious recipes that are easy to create and tempting and nutritious for young children. The plants are organized by season and there are scrumptious things to make throughout the year including puffball kebabs, sea beet huff-a-puffs, staghorn sumac lemonade, sweet potato and chestnut burgers, and hazelnut chocolate spread. Once you’ve caught the foraging bug, you’ll soon be looking for chestnuts to roast, hazelnuts to crack, or the best wild apple trees. Foraging is for life! David Hamilton has been growing his own food for over 17 years and foraging for wild food for a lot longer. He holds an Honours Degree in Nutrition and Food Science and a Diploma in Sustainable Horticulture. He has been teaching wild food since 2005 and his students have included TV’s Mary Berry, Ben Fogle, National Trust Wardens and members of the British Army. He has written three books: The Self-Sufficientish Bible (Hodder) which achieved national and international critical acclaim; the awardwinning Grow Your Food for Free; and Wild Ruins, an Amazon top 10 seller. David writes for a number of publications including Countryfile Magazine, Walk, Discover Britain, the Guardian and Gardener’s World Magazine.

Hughes, one of the bestselling cookbook authors in the US on health-related topics, offers a good-foryou alternative – the first and only book that helps you to watch or lose weight by cooking with an electric pressure cooker. Each recipe maxes out at 350 calories per serving and comes with a complete nutritional analysis, including fats, cholesterol, salt, and other information important to health-savvy and weight-conscious cooks. These are soul-satisfying dinners that won’t leave you hungry, from Beef Burgundy on Sweet Potato Mash to Greek Lemon Chicken with Asparagus and beyond. Nancy S. Hughes writes for a wide range of health and food magazines and is the author of 17 cookbooks, with a focus on low-calorie cooking for weight loss, heart-healthy cooking, diabetic cooking, and cooking with kitchen appliances.

Cooking outdoors is one of life’s simple pleasures. For some, that means firing up a gas grill and cooking meat. However, many of today’s backyard cooks are pushing boundaries. They want the flavour that comes from cooking over live fire, hardwood, and coals. They’re not afraid of the commitment needed to smoke something for hours or build a backyard fire pit. At the end of the day, the enjoyment – and the impressive food – is worth it! In The Backyard Fire Cookbook, author Linda Ly continues on the path she started with The New Camp Cookbook. While the recipes are again all suitable to cook outdoors, this book is more ambitious. Techniques and recipes help readers master various techniques including live fire cooking, charcoal grills, smoking, planking, foil pack cooking, outdoor cast iron cooking, and more. Make the backyard your new kitchen!
