Often translated as resilience or perseverance, the Finnish concept of sisu is about never giving up, even when a task is seemingly impossible. At the heart of sisu is the idea of getting back up from failures, whether that be losing a job or the end of a relationship, and having the courage to use that experience to further oneself. Running a marathon and feel like you’ve hit a wall? Got a business idea but too scared to try it? Channelling sisu can be the key to overcoming both mental and physical blocks. This book explains how anyone can embrace sisu and channel their inner courage to make the most of any situation.

THE NORDIC ART OF FRILUFTSLIV Reconnect with Nature Oliver L. Delorie Small-format, giftable series celebrating Nordic philosophy and living.

White Lion Publishing 978-0-7112-5142-7 £8.99 160 pages, 165 x 140 mm, Hardcover Book Rights: World excl. North America Self-Help/Personal Growth/Happiness

Whereas the popular Danish philosophy of hygge espouses the joys of turning your home into a cosy sanctuary, the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv encourages us to get out into the great outdoors. However, friluftsliv – or ‘free air life’ – means much more than going on camping trips; it reflects an innate understanding of the basic human need to connect with the natural world. Rather than seeking to conquer nature – climb the highest mountain, for example – it is about simply spending time with nature and finding harmony with its rhythms. In Norway, even city dwellers are never far from fjords, parks, and woodland, but this book explains how anyone can enter a friluftsliv state of mind, make the most of their outdoor opportunities and reap the benefits for their mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

Foster recounts the corporate shifts, financial struggles and successes, close calls and, above all, the enduring SUVs and trucks that have carried Jeep from the early 1940s to its triumphant role as a modern-day embodiment of American perseverance. More than 200 colour and black-and-white historical photos and period advertisements complement his expertly written narrative, now updated to include five years of new model editions and prototypes.

THE COLLECTORS Creating Hans Sloane’s Extraordinary Herbarium Edited by Mark Carine Fascinating profiles of those who assembled the greatest botanical collection of modern times, with stories of adventure and discovery across every continent.

Natural History Museum 978-0-56509-488-1 £25.00 192 pages, 173 x 173 mm, Hardcover Book Rights: World excl. US & Canada Nature/Plants/General

Sir Hans Sloane’s herbarium, housed at the Natural History Museum in London, is probably the most extensive herbarium collection, with some specimens dating from the late 1500s. It exemplifies the rich history of exploration and discovery in the period preceding Cook’s voyages and remains of considerable scientific and historical value today. Assembled between the 1680s and 1750s, it comprises an estimated 120,000 pressed plant specimens. More than 300 people contributed to its development and over seventy countries and dependencies across the globe are represented in it. This is the story of botanists such as Leonard Plukenet, Adam Buddle, Samuel Doody and Philip Miller; the collections of gardeners, such as the Duchess of Beaufort and of sailors and those stationed overseas such as Samuel Browne, Edward Bulkley, James Cuninghame and Georg Kamel.

Animals were among the first subjects ever drawn. The urge to make sense of the bewildering variety of animal life around us always had a practical basis – to differentiate the edible, the toxic, the ferocious, and the tractable – but it also has an artistic drive, too. Long before Darwin, or Watson and Crick, our ancestors were obsessed with the visual similarities and differences between the creatures which inhabit the Earth alongside us. Early savants could sense there was an order, a scheme, which unified all life. And the schemes they formulated often tell us just as much about ourselves as they do about the animals depicted. The aim of this book is to tell the story of this artistic systematization of the beasts. David Bainbridge is a reproductive biologist, popular science writer, a Clinical Veterinary Anatomist and fellow of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, whose alumni include John Ray, the originator of the biological term ‘species’.

Bark spiders spin webs ten times stronger than Kevlar. Jumping spiders are capable of learning, recognizing and remembering colours. Recluse spiders can tolerate six months of extreme drought and have a toxin-laden bite that can necessitate skin grafts. An impressive introduction outlining the spider’s natural history is followed by illustrated profiles spanning the majority of taxonomic spider families. Photographs of species from each family are shown, along with silhouettes of life-size views. Population distribution maps, tables of essential information, and commentaries revealing notable characteristics is included. The spider family profiles are also organized thematically, and the commentaries in each chapter reflect different aspects of a spider’s biology.

Henry Walter Bates is one of the pioneers of modern biology, whose discovery of the phenomenon of ‘Batesian mimicry’ inspired Charles Darwin and had a profound impact on his theory of natural selection. A groundbreaking explorer, Bates spent a total of 11 years in the Amazon rain forest, navigating its vast network of unexplored rivers and tributaries. By the time he returned to England in 1859, still only 34 years old, Bates had collected some 712 species of mammals, reptiles, birds, and fishes, and around 14,000 species of insects, of which no less than 8,000 were previously unknown. This charming book revolves around the two journals Bates’ produced during his stay in the Amazon, on which his classic memoir, The Naturalist on the River Amazons, was based. Bates was also a talented artist and this book includes facsimile reproductions of his stunning drawings and illustrations.

In this vivid account of her remarkable record of human feat and endurance, Hawker describes how she conquered her fears and traversed what few others have come close to achieving. Endurance has always been a way of life for Lizzy Hawker, not only a sport, and her enduring passion is for the mountains and wilderness. There is currently a huge upsurge in interest into recent scientific research highlighting the importance gardening for health. This focuses on the activity of gardening for mental and physical health, as well as the way that if you garden for your gut you can improve your digestion too. The microbiome is the plethora of microbes that humans host in their gut, and other cells, and which are fundamental to wellbeing. Recent studies link digestive health and the human microbiome to a range of health conditions such as depression and anxiety, obesity, cancer, diabetes and autism. Interest in the topic has led to an array of related popular science publications, diet and recipe books. There is currently however very little literature on how to grow produce which has high nutritional value, and which optimizes the microbial life within our digestive systems. What types of vegetable, fruit, and herbs should we being growing to encourage beneficial internal microbes? How do we design and plan a productive garden that supports gut health? Grow Yourself Healthy will introduce relevant recent science in an accessible way, provide practical guidance on how to grow, produce and design a productive garden to optimize your health, and provide information on how to grow and store vegetables for fermentation, including select recipes for gut health. Beth Marshall is a professional horticulturist, who has trained with the RHS and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. She has worked in various prestigious vegetable gardens in the UK: RHS Harlow Carr, West Dean and for the Royal Household at Windsor Castle. Beth is Head Gardener on a private estate near Henley in Berkshire, managing an organic kitchen garden and a 57-acre estate including woodlands, wildflower meadows and a deer park. She also has a strong interest in native flora, conservation, foraging, plantbased cooking and beekeeping.

THE POLLINATOR VICTORY GARDEN Win the War on Pollinator Decline with Ecological Gardening Kim Eierman Pollinators are critical to our food supply and responsible for the pollination of the vast majority of all flowering plants on our planet. But by planting a bit differently you can transform your landscape into a pollinator haven: by using proper cultural practices in your garden, choosing the right plant for the right location, and by attracting ‘nature’s pest control’ (beneficial insects that act as natural enemies), you can keep nature in balance and give pollinators a fighting chance.
