第五十一屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可 喜可賀。
逾半個世紀以來,藝術節每年均呈獻 多姿多彩的文藝節目,由古典音樂、 歌劇、戲劇,以至舞蹈、多媒體項 目等,包羅萬有,令觀眾大飽眼福。
今屆藝術節以《收音機與茱麗葉》及 《春之祭》芭蕾舞表演揭開序幕,兩 齣經典作品經由著名編舞家愛德華· 克魯格重新編排,加上斯洛文尼亞 國家歌劇院馬里博爾芭蕾舞團傾力演 出,萬眾矚目;約五星期後,歐洲頂 尖交響樂團—德國班貝格交響樂團將 登台獻技,為今年藝術節畫上圓滿句 號。其間上演的焦點節目還有: 國 際星級女高音安娜·涅翠柯與丈夫男 高音尤西夫·伊瓦佐夫聯袂表演的音 樂會;由藝術家威廉·肯特里奇精心 製作、南非木偶劇團和比利時里切卡 爾古樂團奇妙演繹的蒙特威爾第歌劇 《尤利西斯歸鄉記》;由芭蕾天后娜塔 麗亞·奧斯波娃領銜主演的芭蕾巨 星之《「世」不可擋》及傳奇舞姬之 《趾尖》;以及國際鋼琴大賽冠軍劉曉 禹的演奏會。
藝術節向來十分重視本地演藝人才, 致力讓他們一展才華。今屆藝術節亦 會上演多個粵劇節目,包括《竹林愛 傳奇》、「毛俊輝.粵劇情」、《畫皮》 (精新版),以及「短篇粵劇—戲說 八德」; 並帶來其他本地作品,包括 《飯戲攻心》踏台版、《末戀.無愛合 約》、舞蹈歌劇《兩生花》等等,定 必精彩萬分,不容錯過。
大眾還可通過藝術節,體驗繽紛的藝 術魅力。法國食蟻獸沉浸式藝術工作 室創作的《第一步》,會邀請觀眾互 動共舞;在大館舉行的一系列免費藝 術科技節目,以及「無限亮」計劃, 亦會讓公眾參與其中。「無限亮」計 劃由本地和海外不同能力的藝術家擔 綱演出,鼓勵青少年衝破界限,探索

I would like to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 51st edition.
For more than half a century now, the Arts Festival has enthralled audiences with a superb annual programme of arts and culture performances embracing classical music and opera, theatre, dance, multimedia and a great deal more.
This year’s Arts Festival programme opens with the Slovene National Theatre Maribor’s ballet performances of Radio and Juliet and Le Sacre du Printemps, two classics re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Edward Clug. It closes, nearly five weeks later, with a concert by Germany’s Bamberg Symphony, one of Europe’s greatest orchestras. Other highlights include Anna Netrebko, one of the world’s great sopranos, performing with her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov; artist William Kentridge’s remarkable production of Monteverdi’s opera, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company and Belgium’s Ricercar Consort periodinstrument ensemble; Ballet Superstars’ Force of Nature and Legendary Ballerina

in Two Feet featuring supreme ballerina Natalia Osipova; and concerts by the international award-winning piano virtuoso Bruce Liu.
As always, the Festival shines a spotlight on standout artists from Hong Kong. This year’s Cantonese opera offerings include Love in the Bamboo Grove, Cantonese Opera Classics Circa 2023, The Painted Skin (Refined Edition) and Virtues and Morality—Four Cantonese Operas. Local productions including Table For Six on Stage, Loveless Romance and Love Streams are sure to be among this year’s Festival highlights.
Several programmes invite public participation as well, including the First Steps participatory dance performances staged by France’s Tamanoir Immersive Studio, as well as Tai Kwun’s free series of arts tech productions and the Festival’s No Limits programme, led by local and international artists of varying abilities. No Limits’ offerings emphasise youth exploration, as does the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival with its school tours, preperformance workshops and special programming. And then there is the Festival PLUS creative activities that bring artists and audiences together in communities throughout Hong Kong.
I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its inspired commitment to the arts and to Hong Kong’s continuing rise as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. My thanks, as well, to the Festival’s many generous sponsors and donors.

I am delighted to welcome you to the 51st edition of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. As the city recovers from the disruption of the pandemic, the Festival is returning with an array of live performances featuring top-notch artists from Hong Kong and across the world. Despite the boundless possibilities offered by the internet, attending performances in person remains an irreplaceable experience. It gives me great pleasure to share this collective experience with you today.
The Festival is made possible by the generosity of our supporters.
I wish to thank the HKSAR Government, via the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, for the annual subvention which underpins our long-standing work. On behalf of the Festival team, I would like to extend to you a heartfelt welcome to the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Our theme this year, “Coming Back, Moving Forward”, represents our determination to come back in full force after several years of uncertainties caused by the pandemic. After five decades of hard work and dedication, the Festival has established itself as a premier arts event in the region and an important international arts festival. We are honoured to carry this legacy forward, while advancing our multifaceted work to stay relevant in the present. In the 51st edition, we discover creative voices through new renditions of masterpieces, cross-disciplinary collaborations and commissioned productions— all of which showcase the breadth and endless possibilities of the performing arts, taking us one step
forward in this journey of exploration. Beyond exceptional performances, we are also offering a series of auxiliary PLUS programmes to enhance audience engagement and provide deeper insights into our programmes. Our strong commitment to arts education is seen in the extensive outreach activities aimed at inspiring the younger generation of Hong Kong through promoting quality arts.

香港藝術節於 1973 年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的文化 盛事,於每年 2、 3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國際藝術家 的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育活動,致力豐 富香港的文化生活。
香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2022/ 23 財政年度預計收
入(包括第 51 屆香港藝術節及 2023 年「無限亮」)約港 幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔總收入約 18%,另外約 24%需來自票房收入,約 43%則需依賴來自 各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊助和捐款。預計餘 下的約 15%則來自其他收入,包括政府針對捐款和贊助收 入而提供的配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.
The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2022/23 (including the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2023 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 18% of the Festival's total income. Around 24% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 43% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. The HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*:

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.
The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina

Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake co-commissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.
The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 810,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.
The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.
The HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.
The HKAF officially launched the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation in 2022 to provide greater financial security and longterm sustainability for the Festival. Donations to the Foundation will help the Festival to present large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for. (2023

《尼克遜在中國》:第一幕第一場 《尼克遜在中國》在 1987 年於美 國休斯頓大歌劇院首演,年僅 40 歲的美國作曲家約翰.亞當 斯因而一夕成名,時至今日產 量仍非常多,作品經常在世界 各地演出。去年秋天,三藩市 歌劇團演出了他改編自莎士比 亞的最新歌劇《安東尼與克麗 奧佩托拉》,大獲好評。

《絕對的玩笑》是亞當斯較後 期的作品,他自 70 年代起定居 於三藩市灣區柏克萊。樂曲於 2012 年首演,是灣區首屈一指 的三藩巿交響樂團慶祝其 100 周年的委約作品。亞當斯大 膽地以非一般的協奏曲方式創 作,為弦樂四重奏及管弦樂團 而譜曲。其中一個創作靈感來 自史特拉汶斯基 1920 年的新古 典主義作品《浦欽奈拉》,當 時作曲家希望以當代手法,將 既有的古典音樂帶往新世界。

The premiere of Nixon in China at the Houston Grand Opera in 1987 catapulted John Adams— only 40 years old at the time— to international fame. He went on to become one of the most frequently performed American composers still at work today and he remains tirelessly productive: just last autumn, the San Francisco Opera presented his latest opera, Antony and Cleopatra, which is based on the Shakespeare play.
In addition to its impact on the composer’s career, Nixon in China helped spark a renaissance of American opera that continues until the present and shows no signs of fading. Curiously, Adams initially approached the opera medium with some scepticism. But the visionary director Peter Sellars, who subsequently collaborated on almost all of Adams’ stage works, suggested

a topic that proved to be irresistible: the historic visit that American President Nixon made to the People’s Republic of China in February 1972, which was an essential step in normalising relations between the two countries after more than two decades without diplomatic ties.
Sellars, Adams and librettist Alice Goodman worked as a team to transform the raw, historical facts of the five-day stay by the presidential entourage in Beijing into a grand opera—the ideal art form, as Sellars convinced his colleagues, to represent a dialogue between dramatically different perspectives and world views. The opera comprises three acts that dive deep beneath the surface headlines of a media event to explore the tension between public and private lives and ideals.
We hear excerpts from the opening scene, in which a chorus of Chinese military officials await the arrival of the presidential plane. At this stage in his career, Adams had adapted the tools of minimalism into a personal language marked by powerful harmonic momentum and rhythmic energy. Instead of a formal overture, the opening minutes serve as a brief prelude based on a rising scale that evokes a sense of expectation. Adams makes a point not to engage in musical “tourism”, so there was no attempt to write “Chinese-sounding” music. The chorus enters, adding a somber, almost ritualistic layer
to Goodman’s oracle-like poetry. It conveys the message of the mythic heroes of old being replaced by everyday people— while the ordinary daily tasks of the farmer in turn are framed in legendary terms. One of the main themes of Nixon in China revolves around the idea of heroism and our need for heroes.
John Adams: Absolute Jest Absolute Jest comes from a later stage in Adams’ career. Premiered in 2012, it resulted from a commission to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the San Francisco Symphony— the leading orchestra in the Bay Area, where Adams settled in the 1970s and where he has lived ever since (across the Bay from San Francisco, in Berkeley). For the occasion, Adams made the daring decision to compose for the unusual format of a concerto for orchestra and string quartet. Another impetus was his experience with Igor Stravinsky’s neoclassical Pulcinella Suite from 1920, which reworks musical artefacts from the past into a new context.
Ever since his teenage years in New England, Adams had revered the music of Beethoven, particularly from the “late period”. Absolute Jest draws on material from and allusions to the String Quartets in C-sharp minor (Op. 131), in F major (Op. 135) and the Grosse Fuge (the “Great Fugue”) originally intended as the finale to the Quartet in B-flat major (Op. 130); the Hammerklavier Sonata No.
29 (Op. 106); and snippets of the symphonic scherzos, above all the scherzo from the Ninth Symphony in D minor, Op. 125. What Adams especially admires in Beethoven is the great German composer’s genius for discovering hidden potential and “ecstatic energy” in the most elemental material, such as the insistent rhythm, separated by an octave, of the Ninth Symphony’s Scherzo movement. The focus on Beethoven’s scherzos adds another layer of meaning here. “Scherzo” is the Italian work for “joke” and is associated with Beethoven’s driving, almost manic humour. But this is also an ironic humour that is capable of transforming something that seems trivial or transitory into a transcendent obsession—music of cosmic scope and profundity. Adams similarly recombines the Beethovenian DNA and his own musical ideas into a large-scale form that recalls the classical process of theme and variations. This act of invention brings to mind another sense of “jest,” which is similar to “wit”—and, in its creative implications, far more than a lighthearted joke.
One of the challenges posed by the combination of string quartet and orchestra is how to engage these two entities in dialogue in a plausible way, since the quartet by itself is such an intimate medium, in contrast to the power and sheer mass of the orchestral ensemble. Adams addressed this through his brilliant use of counterpoint

and unusual colours, such as the combination of cowbells, harp and piano tuned in non-Western mean temperament to suggest an archaic sonority. He ended up radically revising the original version, condensing but also recomposing it into a fascinating variant of the concerto idea. Despite his many allusions to Beethoven, Absolute Jest conveys the power of Adams’ own personality and creative imagination.
Unsuk Chin: Le Chant des Enfants des Étoiles (The Song of the Children of the Stars)
Beethoven was also one of Unsuk Chin’s favourite composers when she started learning classical music as a youngster in Seoul in the 1960s. The daughter of a minister, she taught herself piano. (The family had no money for records or music lessons.) One reason Beethoven appealed to her, Chin has explained, is because “he was constantly looking for new directions” and “for original solutions, even if this meant breaking through existing forms”. Le Chant des Enfants des Étoiles (“The Song of the Children of the Stars”) similarly finds new ways to build an original, thrilling, transportive soundscape The result is an epic score that can claim its place in a lineage of visionary compositions that also includes such works as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and the cosmic orchestral canvases of Olivier Messiaen.
Chin composed Le Chant to celebrate the inauguration of one of Asia’s great concert venues, the Lotte Concert Hall in Seoul, where it was premiered in 2016 by the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean National Choir and Korean National Boys Choir under the direction of MyungWhun Chung, to whom Chin dedicated the work. Le Chant in particular was cited when she received the Léonie Sonning Music Prize in 2021—one of the many distinctions garnered by South Korea’s leading composer, who lives in Berlin.
Chin employs a full mixed adult choir and a boys’ choir. One dream that reflects the idealism of Le Chant, she says, is for a combined choir of North and South Koreans to perform the piece one day. Chin’s beautifully textured writing for the voice illuminates the eclectic range of a dozen or so texts she chose, from Romantic poets such as Blake and Shelley to the modern Finnish poets Edith Södergran and Eeva-Liisa Manner, the Portuguese Fernando Pessoa and the Nobel Prize-wining Spanish poet Juan Ramón Rimenez, among others. Chin selected texts that deal with the birth of universe, the human condition or images of eternity— not only for their themes but because they even suggested musical images.
heightened sensitivity to timbral nuance and its implications, which she draws out with extraordinary imagination. “I wanted to create a very big sound: not only loud, but also with lots of power”, she says.
The concept underlying Le Chant, according to Chin, is that human beings, like everything else in the universe, “are all children of stars” and that there is “no boundary or difference” regardless of our apparent differences of ethnicity, religion or cultural background. Le Chant also reflects her passion for physics and astronomy, which Chin enjoys studying after a day spent composing. “Then you feel some hope in this world,” she says, because this perspective reminds her that “we all come from the stars”.

Composer, conductor, and creative thinker John Adams occupies a unique position in the world of American music. His works stand out among contemporary classical compositions for their depth of expression, brilliance of sound, and the profoundly humanist nature of their themes.
Among Adams’s works are several of the most performed contemporary classical pieces today: Harmonielehre, Shaker Loops, Chamber Symphony, Absolute Jest, Short Ride in a Fast Machine and his Violin Concerto. His stage works, in collaboration with director Peter Sellars, include Nixon in China, The Death of Klinghoffer, El Niño, Doctor Atomic, A Flowering Tree and the Passion oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary.
Adams is the 2019 recipient of the Erasmus Prize “for notable contributions to European culture, society and social science”—the only American composer to be so honoured in the prize’s 61-year history. As an advocate of his composer colleagues, Adams has premiered more than 100 new
works ranging from composers such as Philip Glass and Terry Riley to works by young emerging composers.
Since 2009 he has held the position of Creative Chair with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Also a provocative writer, he is author of the highly acclaimed autobiography Hallelujah Junction and his writings have appeared in both The New Yorker Magazine and The New York Times Book Review.
As a conductor of his own works and wide variety of repertoire, Adams has appeared with the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Wiener Symphoniker, the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the orchestras of Seattle, Cleveland and Rotterdam.

Composer and curator Unsuk Chin was born in Seoul in 1961 and has lived in Germany since 1985. Chin’s career has been celebrated with a series of classical music awards such as the Leonie Sonning Prize, the Sibelius Prize and the Grawemeyer Award. Her music has attracted the attention of international conductors such as Simon Rattle, Alan Gilbert, Gustavo Dudamel, Kent Nagano and others. Regularly commissioned by leading performing organisations worldwide, Chin's music has been performed by orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw, among others. She has served as the Composer-in-Residence of the Lucerne Festival, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the BBC’s Total Immersion Festival and many more. In 2007, Chin’s first opera, Alice in Wonderland, received its world premiere at the Bavarian State Opera, opening the Munich Opera Festival. Chin has also been active as a concert curator. She was Artistic Director of the Seoul Philharmonic's Ars Nova series from 2006-17, of the London-based Philharmonia Orchestra's Music of Today series from 2011-20, the Artistic Director of the International Tongyeong Music Festival from 2022 and the Director of the Seoul Festival of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2023.

Wilson Ng just concluded his tenure as the Associate Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) --appointed at the age of 28 as the youngest conductor in the orchestra's history--and is the Artistic Director of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra in Hong Kong. He has received prizes at renowned competitions including the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Bamberg, the Sir Georg Solti International Conductors' Competition in Frankfurt and the Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition in Paris.
Ng’s debut SPO performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1 was praised by Yonhap News “as if he had become Shostakovich himself”. He then went on to lead the orchestra at the Seoul Arts Centre Orchestra Festival in 2019 and 2020, and the Lotte Classic Revolution Festival, also in Seoul, in 2022. After achieving widespread success, he was also given the opportunity to conduct other major South Korean orchestras such as the KBS Symphony, the Korean National Symphony and the Daejeon Philharmonic, and has worked with leading European orchestras including the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the Danish National Symphony and the BBC Scottish Symphony.

Music Director Jaap van Zweden to lead the megaconcert Symphony Under the Stars, conducting Beethoven’s Eroica. “Under his baton, the HK Phil displayed a sinewy refinement,” praised RTHK. In 2023, he returns to conduct the Orchestra in two concerts at the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Ng began his musical journey at the age of 11 by learning the flute. He performed as a guest solo flautist with the Lyon Opera Ballet and gave a recital at the 41st HKAF. Advancing his conducting studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, he was later awarded the James Conlon Conductor Prize at the Aspen Music Festival. His mentors have included Osmo Vänskä, Markus Stenz and John Nelson, with other important influences including Bernard Haitink, David Zinman, Robert Spano and Roger Norrington.

The Esmé Quartet made a sensational entrance into the string quartet world by winning multiple prizes, including the first prize, at the 2018 London Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. Subsequently, the quartet appeared at festivals and concert halls such as the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland and the Classic Esterházy in Austria.

在 2020 及 2021 年的樂季,四 重奏獲委任為韓國首爾樂天音 樂廳的首個駐廳藝術家。在 2021 年,四人除了在意大利巡 迴演出,亦再次在德國及葡萄 牙演出。在 2022 年,四重奏組 合更首度踏上北美及日本,開 展巡演。
四重奏之名「 Esmé 」在古法語 中意指「受珍愛、被敬重」。四 位識於微時的韓國弦樂家志同 道合,同樣熱愛音樂、藝術及 生命,決意在 2016 年於科隆音 樂學院組成弦樂組合。四重奏 曾獲畢希勒和莊拿芬.布朗等 藝術家指導。

The quartet recorded its debut CD with works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Unsuk Chin and Frank Bridge on the Alpha Classics label. The recording was released in early 2020 and has achieved critical acclaim with a five-star review from Diapason.
Esmé Quartet was named the first artists-in-residence at the Lotte Concert Hall, Seoul, Korea, for the season 2020-21. The year 2021 saw an Italian tour and return engagements in Germany and Portugal. In 2022, the quartet performed on tour for the first time in North America and Japan.
The name of the quartet, Esmé, is taken from an old French word meaning “to be loved”. The quartet was formed in 2016 at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany by four Korean musicians who were friends as youngsters and shared a passion for music, the arts and life. The quartet has been mentored by artists including Günter Pichler and Jonathan Brown.

Viola 香港中提琴家劉子正以獨奏及 室樂演奏家身份活躍於國際樂 壇,其演奏獲《費城詢問報》 形容為「精準優雅」。他分別 在多項國際大賽中獲獎,包括 2014 年的威廉.普林士國際中 提琴比賽及 2012 年的美國星光 藝術家全國面試。其演跡遍及 北美、歐洲及亞洲。
劉子正曾以獨奏者身份與費城 室樂團及特倫赫姆獨奏家樂團 合作。他又曾於德國柏林的基 辛格頒獎禮上亮相,並與東京 四重奏同台演出。劉子正在學 期間為寇蒂斯學院交響樂團的 中提琴首席。此外,他又曾擔 任上海交響樂團首席,以及聖 地亞哥交響樂團及哈利斯科州 愛樂樂團的客席首席中提琴。
劉子正先後畢業於寇蒂斯學院 及柯爾本音樂學院,並師承中 提琴家迪亞茲、克萊蒂及費拉
舒曼。他亦曾經接受著名的艾 默森弦樂四重奏、瓜奈利四重 奏及東京四重奏的室樂指導。
劉子正曾在世界各地舉行大師 班,包括英國皇家音樂學院、 蘇州大學、邁阿密的新世界藝 術學院、華盛頓音樂學院及香 港浸會大學等。他現時為中國 音樂學院的特聘中提琴教授。
Praised for his “immaculately refined” style (The Philadelphia Inquirer), violist Born Lau has appeared internationally as a soloist, chamber musician and principal violist. A prize winner at the Primrose International Viola Competition and the Astral National Auditions, he enjoys a career that spans three continents. Career highlights include performances as a soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and Trondheim Soloists, performance at the Henry A. Kissinger Prize ceremony in Berlin, and a concert with the Tokyo String Quartet in Los Angeles. Lau served as Principal Violist of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, as well as Guest Principal Violist of San Diego Symphony, Curtis Symphony Orchestra, and Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.
Lau graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music and the Colburn Conservatory of Music. He has studied with viola teachers including Roberto Diaz, Paul Coletti and Richard Fleischman. He also studied chamber music with members
of the Emerson, Guarneri and Tokyo String Quartets.
As an educator, Lau has given viola master classes throughout the world, including the Royal Academy of Music, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Soochow University, the New World School of the Arts, Washington Conservatory of Music, and the Hong Kong Baptist University. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Viola at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival Chorus is made up of members of Die Konzertisten and singers additionally engaged for this production. Die Konzertisten is recognised as one of Hong Kong’s foremost chamber choirs. Its recent highlights include an acclaimed performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and maestro Jaap van Zweden, as well as a collaboration with the period-instrument ensemble Arcangelo and its director, Jonathan Cohen, on Bach’s Mass in B minor. Long’s Madame White Snake (2019), the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and Male Choir (2018), Debussy’s Pelleas et Melisande (2018), Bright Sheng’s Dream of the Red Chamber (2017) and Gluck’s Iphigenia in Tauris with Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch (2014).
Award-winning conductor Felix Yeung currently combines his office as Director of Music at St John’s Cathedral and Provincial Music Director of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui. He is also Music Director Die Konzertisten, one of Hong Kong’s foremost chamber choirs. Felix was given the Award for Young Artist (Music) in 2015 by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Felix is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, where he obtained an MMus with distinction under the tutelage of conductors Patrick Russill and Paul Brough. He was awarded the Academy’s coveted premier prix, the DipRAM, for outstanding performance in his final recital.

香港兒童合唱團
The Hong Kong Children’s Choir
香港兒童合唱團(簡稱「香 兒」)成立於 1969 年,為香港 首隊兒童合唱團,並為註冊非 牟利慈善團體。現時「香兒」
已成為世界上人數最多、組織 最龐大的兒童合唱團,擁有超 過 5,000 名團員,更發展為一個 多元兒童藝術團體。
「香兒」每年均獲不同團體邀 請到外地演出,並經常在香港 的歷史性時刻演出,包括 1997 年香港政權交接儀式、1998 年 香港國際機場開幕典禮、2005 年香港迪士尼樂園開幕典禮, 以及多場慶祝香港回歸的周 年活動。
2019 年,「香兒」為慶祝成立 50 周年舉辦「 2019 亞太合唱高峰 會」及首個專為本地年青合唱 指揮而設的「香港合唱指揮比 賽」,積極推動及促進亞太地區 合唱藝術交流,並於 2020 年憑 此獲第十四屆香港藝術發展獎 「藝術推廣獎」。2021 年舉辦的

The Hong Kong Children’s Choir (HKCC) was founded in 1969 as the first children’s choir in Hong Kong. The HKCC is a registered non-profit charitable organisation and it is now the biggest choir in the world with more than 5,000 members and has grown into a diversified arts organisation for children.
The HKCC is invited to perform overseas each year, spreading a message of love and peace in different parts of the world. As the children’s choir that best represents Hong Kong, the HKCC has taken part in many historical moments, including the Hong Kong Handover Ceremony in 1997, the Opening Ceremony of the Hong Kong International Airport in 1998, the Hong Kong Disneyland Grand
Opening in 2005, and various performances to commemorate the anniversary of Hong Kong’s reunification with China.
In 2019, the HKCC presented the Asia Pacific Choral Summit 2019 in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Choral Conducting Competition to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Choir, and won the Award for Arts Promotion at the 14th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in 2020. The original Cantonese musical King of Singers produced by the HKCC in 2021 was selected as one of the Top 10 Music Headlines 2021 by RTHK as well.

霍嘉敏生於香港,曾赴美國休 士頓大學深造。1995 年加入香
港兒童合唱團,並於 1997 年 獲委任為音樂總監。她在音樂 界的成就斐然,享譽國際,曾 被邀到中國、加拿大、澳洲、 新加坡、馬來西亞、印尼等 地舉辦音樂工作坊,亦經常獲 邀作客席指揮,曾合作演出之 團體包括溫哥華室樂團及香港 中樂團。
霍嘉敏亦積極參與慈善音樂活 動,熱心公益,於 2001 年獲 選為香港「十大傑出青年」之 一,並於 2007 年「民政事務 局局長嘉許計劃」中被表揚為 「推動文化藝術發展傑出人士」
及名列英國國際傳記中心的 「一百位傑出音樂家」之一。霍 嘉敏被委任為香港教育大學文 化與創意藝術學系 2016-2024 年 榮譽駐校藝術家。現任亞太合 唱理事會香港代表、音樂事務 處專業顧問、「世界兒童合唱團 聯盟」董事會成員。
Born in Hong Kong, Fok furthered her studies in music at the University of Houston, USA. She joined The Hong Kong Children's Choir in 1995 and was appointed Music Director since 1997. Fok enjoys an international reputation for her dedication to children’s choral music. She has conducted workshops and masterclasses in Mainland, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. She has also performed as guest conductor with numerous organizations such as the Vancouver Chamber Orchestra and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.
Fok was one of the awardees for the “2001 Ten Outstanding Young Persons” in Hong Kong. In 2007, she was recognized as the “Persons with Outstanding Contributions to the Development of Arts and Culture” under the Secretary for Home Affairs Commendation Scheme and was also included in the “Top 100 Musicians of the Year” by the International Biographical Centre. Fok was appointed as the 2016-2024 Honorary Artist-in-Residence at The Education University of Hong Kong. She is also appointed as the representative of Hong Kong in the Asia Pacific Choral Council, Expert Adviser of the Music Office under LCSD and a Board member of "The World Alliance of Children's Choir (WACC)".

香港兒童合唱團舊生,林浩恩 畢業於美國西敏合唱學院獲合 唱指揮碩士。他先後以指揮及 伴奏身分隨團前往葡萄牙、愛 沙尼亞、芬蘭、澳洲等地作交 流演出,並曾與國際知名指揮 家水藍合作,帶領「香兒」於 2019 年於香港藝術節演出由普 立茲獎得主周龍作曲之現代歌 劇《白蛇傳》。他亦於 2020 年 帶領「香兒」參與由「更新視 野」主辦的《空氣頌》演出。 林氏為聲蜚合唱節音樂總監, 曾擔任香港浸會大學音樂系客 席講師及指揮香港浸會大學合 唱團,並曾前往瑞士聯同格林 美得主男高音菲尼克斯於「國 際博斯維爾暑期合唱節」任教。
Lam is an alumnus of HKCC and holds a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting at Westminster Choir College, the USA. As a conductor and pianist of HKCC, he has toured to Portugal, Estonia, Finland and Australia with the group. Lam prepared HKCC for renowned conductor Lan Shui in contemporary opera production Madame White Snake written by Pulitzer Prize winner Zhou Long, as part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival 2019. He also led HKCC to perform in ReNew Vision's production of Aria in 2020. He is concurrently the Music Director of SingFest HK and was a part-time lecturer of the Hong Kong Baptist University, conducted the Hong Kong Baptist University Choir. He also collaborated with Paul Phoenix, the Grammy Awardwinning tenor, in leading the International Boswil Choral Summer Academy in 2018 and 2019.

梵志登是現今國際古典樂壇炙 手可熱的指揮,自 2012/13 樂 季起正式擔任港樂音樂總監一

余隆由 2015/16 樂季開始出任 首席客席指揮。廖國敏於 2020 年 12 獲任為駐團指揮。

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is recognised as one of the leading orchestras in Asia. In 2019 the HK Phil received the prestigious Gramophone Orchestra of the Year Award— the first orchestra in Asia to receive this distinction.
Jaap van Zweden, one of today’s most sought-after conductors, has been the orchestra’s Music Director since the 2012/13 season. He has also been the Music Director of the New York Philharmonic since the 2018/19 season.
Yu Long has been Principal Guest Conductor since the 2015/16 season, while Lio Kuokman was appointed as Resident Conductor in December 2020.
Under the dynamic leadership of van Zweden, the HK Phil has reached new heights of artistic excellence, garnering international critical acclaim. The orchestra successfully completed a four-year journey
through Wagner’s Ring Cycle, performing and recording one opera from the cycle annually from 2015 to 2018. The concert performances and live Naxos recordings were enthusiastically received and garnered the 2019 Gramophone Orchestra of the Year Award. Recent recording projects with van Zweden include Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, which was released in November 2022 (Naxos).
With the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices, the HK Phil undertook a major tour in 2017 to Seoul, Osaka, Singapore, Melbourne and Sydney in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. 葉翹瑋於 2008 年在英國坎特伯里國王公學修讀高中時開始學習 風琴,當時隨師約翰・羅賓遜(時任坎特伯里主教座堂助理風琴 師)。葉氏於 2009 年在肯特郡風琴師協會風琴音樂節的公開賽奪冠。
他現為聖約翰座堂風琴師及香港聖公會大主教行政秘書。
Jonathan started learning the organ in 2008, when he was a sixth form student at The King's School, Canterbury. He was taught by John Robinson, then Assistant Organist at Canterbury Cathedral. Jonathan won in the Open Class of the 2009 Kent County Organists' Association Organ Festival.
He now serves as the Cathedral Organist of St John’s Cathedral, and as the Archbishop's Administrative Secretary.
