House cave is a traditional housing typology in North China. They are generally carved out of a hillside. Typically, the depth of one housing unit is around 7-15m, and the face width is usually 3-4m. Generally, natural lighting distribution is lacking in the housing since the windows are limited by the layout. Particularly, it is even harder for the residents to use electric light. In this condition, it is not realistic for them to use electric lights. This project is aimed to improve the lighting condition. Rather than conventional electrical engineering and lighting design, this design will take advantage of the natural light. Based on the design, the cost will be much lower and the conduction will be more feasible and efficient. Optical fibers have high efficiency, so they are the ideal materials to lead the light into the indoor space. These linear lights can be dragged to any place, the flexibility of the material give the opptunity to form different pattern, and can be used based on human activities. The ends are just like flowers so that people can control the light intensity through adjusting the open and close of the flowers. In this way, residents could create the most suitableďźŒcomfortable environments according to their needs.

The project is located in Xiwenmiaoping, the old city in Changsha. The design‘s purpose is to provide kids with activity space in the historical district. The historical district is facing several problems, like poor infrastructure, low efficiency transportation system, high density buildings and narrow streets, etc.. Kids in this area have few activity space to enjoy the sunshine and nature. They are also restricted when it comes to study and exercise. On the other hand, their parents are always busy on work and don’t have enough time to take care their kids. As a result, kids are always in danger when playing games on the streets. Our design aims at providing them with the same opportunity and space as the kids in other areas. Meanwhile, the project also applies some advanced technology to manage kids' activities and also can solve the problems in kids' learning space.

Most of the migrant workers have to work out of the old city. The young local residents also have to manage their shops in the old city or go out and work somewhere. As a result, it is common that children are always left with their grandparents or even left by their own, which has negative impacts on kids mentally and physically.

Children have no place to do homework but to study by the side of street

Trees are pretty rare in the old city and the sunshine is hard to get

Children lack the supervision from adults who have to work during the daytime

Kids' safety is threatened by the strangers around.

Ideal Childhood

Childhood is supposed to be full of sunshine, nature and joy. Kids should have sufficient places to run, to do sports, to play with their friends. They should have clean and tidy places to study, to paint, to watch movies and etc..

There is no enough space for new construction and the old buildings also have historical value

Children lack sufficient activity space

Kids' safety is threatened by the traffic chaos

Site Analysis Surrounding Kids Activity Facilities The site is located in Xiwenmiao district, a part of the historical district. There used to be an important school with nearly 1000 years’ history. However, during the 1938 Changsha Fire, most of the buildings in this area are burned down except for an archway. But for all these, the existing buildings built after 1938 are of historic and cultural values due to their traditional style.

A Utopia for Housewives Individual Work Tutor: Song Ying GFA: 4867 ㎥ Location: Changsha, Hunan , China Date: 2015.09----2015.11

Housewives always suffer from psychological problems and they always stay at home taking care of old family members, their children and doing all kinds of house keeping. Their social circle is limited and they always lack senses of achievement. Moreover, their contributions towards their families are always underestimated and it is normal that they are treated unfairly at home. Considering this situation, this design is aimed at providing housewives with online management so that housewives would be able to choose their working time and job type according to their skills and schedules. The building is a combination of an office building and a museum. Its theme is the Tujia Brocade, which is a cultural heritage in China and is going to extinct soon. This building is used for the production and exhibition of the brocade. All the relevant jobs would be done by housewives. In the design, I adopt a special form of building In the design, I adopt a special form of building includes some indoor space for housewives to care for their children and some gardens for children to play. Moreover, there are also some space for housewives to get their children be taken care of by teachers. In this way, women are able to make new friends, build self identity and increase their income. Another benefit is that the non-material cultural heritage would be protected, which would be a win-win strategy.

Tujia brocade is a kind of non-material cultural heritage in China. But now, a decreasing number of people knows how to produce it. Some experts even allege that this brocade would disappear in a short time. In the past time, brocades are produced by housewives, they used to work while looking after their children and then they would sell the brocades to make money. Brocades are easy and safe to make. So, it is a good way to active the housewives' life by traditional handicraft.

Site is located in the Central South University campus. It is adjacent to residential area and student gym. It is also located between the dormitory area and classroom buildings, which are far away from each other. There is not enough public space around for people hanging out and there are not facilities for different programs. Based on the site analysis, this design aims at keeping the variety of activities on site and creating more public space for residents and students. The climax of the building is the central open space, which introduces the water surface and also connects with the entrance hall. And the glass façade around the open space would also active the indoor space. Simultaneously, people can also walk directly onto the roof and get into the central open space. By connecting outside to inside, the design extend the theater indoor program to the outdoor space. At the same time, there will be a variety of students activities introduced to inner space. It becomes a complex building for study, school club and social activities.

This design is based on future technology and Internet technology. It is aimed at making the best use of the equipment in the makerspaces, being flexible for companies' scale and location, attracting more people to take part in, promoting interaction between makers' and encouraging creativity. This design has two sections. One section is the central part of the building which is used for public activities like communication, exhibiton, holding meetings and resting. The public space can maintain all kinds of work and life activities. And also the circulation in the building allows people easily get to the public space. The other section of the building is the space surrounding the central space. This part adopts a modular systemďźŒ which mainly acts as working and living space. Makers can choose some fixed modules like bedrooms and offices according to their situation. There are also some non-fixed modules like metalworking workshops, printing workshops, spining workshops, model rooms, kitchens and etc., which are all transferred by elevators. Makers can use them only when they need them, so that the facilities can be taken the best use of. Apart from that, this design include a special module----motor home. It could be used as a traffic tool as well as a working space. When makers need to go to other cities, they can drive their company to other cities directly and settle down in another makers' community.

Wandering in the Paintings Academic|Group Work Tutor: Tong Shuyuan,Luo Ming Team Member: Xiao Mingxin, Sun Yan, Wang Yahan, He Lisha, Lu Wanying Location: Changsha, Hunan,China Date: 2015.06----2015.07

Traditional Chinese painting consists of three layers: close view, medium view and distant view. The first starting point of this design is to split the three layers and put them into different positions in the space. In this design, we chose to draw the paintings on some translucent material and line them up so that the visitors would be able to see one layer through another layer, and the content of the painting people see will change in different positions. At the same time, visitors themselves will become a part of the painting too. Another starting point of the design is bamboo, which always represent integrity, perseverance and pure in traditional Chinese culture. Apart from using bamboos as main building materials of the design, we also planted real bamboos and drew bamboos on the cloth, which will form delighted contrast. With the translucent paintings and all the bamboos, we designed a circulation includes some rest spaces which allow people to sit down, close their eyes and get away from the hustle and bustle of the modern life for a moment. There are aeolian bells around the rest space so that the visitors could enjoy some pleasant sound when they are inside. We didn’t use any modern technology or new material in the design, bamboos and hemp cords are the only materials we used and all the bamboos are combined together with hemp cords.

Background

Bamboos, Pantings and People

'Wandering in paintings' is a famous sentence in a poem from Wei Wang, a great poet in Tang Dynasty. Traditional Chinese painting incudes three layers: close view, medium view and distant view. This design is aimed at creating the experience in the poem. To achieve this goal, we chose to separate the 3 layers and make it possible for people to step in paintings.
