$250K Donated to Local Shelter Organizations 2015 Home for the Holidays Proceeds Distributed
Home for the Holidays recently contributed one quarter of a million dollars to local, shelterrelated charities, made possible by record ticket sales during the 2015 campaign. Home for the Holidays is an annual project of the Acadian Home Builders Association (AHBA) and KATC-TV 3 in which AHBA members construct a new, high-end home, raffle it off and donate the proceeds to local non-profit shelter organizations.
A contribution was also given to Faith House of Acadiana, which serves an important role in Lafayette by providing protection and aid to abused women and their children. The shelter provides safe housing, food, clothing, health screenings, medications, counseling and legal assistance to help mistreated individuals and their kids escape dangerous situations.
Home for the Holidays also made a donation to St. Michael Center for Veterans. The center is a division of Catholic Services of Acadiana and is an emergency and transitional housing “Despite uncertainty in the oil market, the people of Acadiana showed their overwhelming program for homeless veterans. GENERAL COUNSEL CHECKING AND RECORDING TITLE IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF CLOSING Q: I RECENTLY PURCHASED A HOUSE IN YOUNGSVILLE. AT THE CLOSING, THE ATTORNEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF RECORDING EVERYTHING AT THE COURTHOUSE, INCLUDING TITLE. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF RECORDING TITLE? A: When you purchase immovable property, you receive a written document (called a “cash sale”) that transfers the ownership (title) of the property from the seller to you as the purchaser. The cash sale gives you formal title in exchange for a specified amount of money (the purchase price). The conveyance of immovable property is not complete until all parties to the transaction sign the cash sale.

The cash sale should also be recorded at the courthouse in the parish where the property is located. The purpose of recording the cash sale is to give “notice to the world” that you now have an ownership interest in that particular piece of property. Recording title also tracks the chronological chain of title for the property. This means that anyone who wants to know who owns a piece of real property can check the records of the parish courthouse for the parish where the property is located. Before you purchased your house, the closing attorney or an abstractor ran title on the property to make sure that the seller was the true owner of the property. He/she also checked to make sure there weren’t any title defects in prior conveyances and transfers and transfers of the property. As purchaser of property, you need to be sure that each time the property was transferred in the past, the seller had clear title to the property and the previous purchasers obtained clear title. If someone in the past got less than “the whole bundle of sticks” you will not get clear title. This is why title is checked and things need to be recorded.

Typically, the longer you have had the loan, the less you can save. In your case, since you just recently purchased your house, you could probably save a significant amount by increasing your monthly payment by $220 each month. However, if your employer matches all or part of your contributions to a 401(k) plan, contributing up to the limits of the employer=s match may take priority over paying down your mortgage. Also, if you don’t have an emergency fund that represents three to six months’ worth of living expenses, establishing this type of fund should take precedence over paying down your mortgage. I would recommend you take a look at the big picture. Your age, income, financial goals, and other investments are all considerations you should take into account. The closer you are to retirement, the less risk you want to take with your investments. After considering your individual situation, if no investment opportunity makes as much sense to you as paying down the mortgage, then that’s what you should do.
