Getting Creative with Your Empty Nest By Mac Gibson, President
In the last few years, many baby boomers have said goodbye to their adult children, who have moved out of the house and started the next chapter in their lives. While some empty nesters are excited about this new phase, it can be a stressful time for others. When your kids move out and you’re faced with an empty nest, lots of questions come to mind. Should you move out and downsize? If you stay, how should you use the kids’ rooms? What other changes should you make as you get older?

If you’ve made the decision to stay in your home – at least for now – it’s time to figure out how your house can work better for you in the coming years. Focus on Small DIY Jobs With the kids out of the house, you may be surprised at how much free time you have. Use this time to tackle some of those home renovation jobs that have been on your to-do list for a while. Before you begin any project, however, look at your house – room by room – with a fresh set of eyes. Now that your house doesn’t need to accommodate a growing family, how do you want to use each of the rooms to fit your new lifestyle? Maybe the mudroom is no longer necessary, but a craft room has always been on your wish list. Now you can focus on making those changes. Create a Home Office You may be an empty nester, but you are still a very active member of the workforce. An extra bedroom or den previously used for family activities would be a great place to turn into a home office. Home offices are becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity with more people working from – or running their own businesses from – home. Expand Your Space Depending on the age of your home, you may find that your master bedroom or bath is too small for comfort. Expand into space that isn’t being used to build the
master bath of your dreams or to create a separate seating or dressing area in your bedroom. Incorporating these changes will not only create a home that suits your new lifestyle, they also may increase the value of your home when you decide to finally sell. Many empty nesters hire expert remodelers to adapt their home to make it easy to use and maintain. Stairs often become a problem, but moving the master bedroom and the laundry room to the ground floor can be part of a solution that gives home owners many more years in the home they love. Building professionals who have earned the National Association of Home Builders’ Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation have received training on how to build or renovate a home so that the occupants can live in the home safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of their age or ability level. While most CAPS professionals are remodelers, an increasing number are general contractors, designers, architects and health care professionals.

ELECTION OUTCOMES Q: IS THERE ANY WAY FOR ME TO FIND OUT WHO THE PEOPLE IN MY VOTING PRECINCT (PRECINCT 69) VOTED FOR TO BE OUR GOVERNOR? I HAVE A LITTLE BET WITH MY DEMOCRATIC NEIGHBOR THAT HIS GUY DID NOT CARRY OUR DISTRICT AND I AM READY TO COLLECT MY WINNINGS. A: The Secretary of State’s website (www.sos.la.gov) is a fantastic resource for all things election related. When you get to the site, there is a tab titled “Elections & Voting”, that will take you to Election Results & Statistics. From there, you can find out the voter turnout for your Precinct, Parish, State; you can find out how your precinct voted on all candidates; voter statistics broken down by State, Parish Precinct. There is a real wealth of information at your fingertips. Unfortunately, you won’t be collecting any money from your neighbor if your bet was that a Republican candidate won in your Precinct. John Bel Edwards won in Precinct 69 with 43% of the vote, Scott Angelle came in second with 27% of the vote, followed by Dardenne with 15% and Vitter by 14%. Voter turnout was low (as with the State as a whole) in your Precinct with only 37.5% of voters showing up at the polls last Saturday. Maybe you will have better luck with the runoff on November 21.

ALL THE SIGNS Q: NOW THAT THE ELECTION IS OVER, WHEN DO ALL OF THESE POLITICAL SIGNS HAVE TO BE REMOVED? I AM SO TIRED OF SEEING SOME OF THESE POLITICIANS’ FACES; DO THEY REALLY THINK THAT A SIGN IS GOING TO GET THEM ELECTED? A: With the exception of the candidates in the runoff election on November 21st, the political signs should be taken down pretty soon. According to the Lafayette Consolidated Government, the person who erected the sign is responsible for removing the sign within 14 days after the event terminates. Many of the signs should come down by November 9th. Much like politics, many people tend to have strong feelings about political yard signs and their effectiveness in an election. Many take the position that “yard signs don’t vote”, and others are of the belief that yard signs are an important component of the political campaign. In fact, there are a surprising amount of articles out there devoted to sign wars! Just take a drive down West Bayou Parkway to take stock of sign wars in Lafayette. Research has shown that yard signs don’t have an impact the voting for any particular candidate, but the signs do serve to get name recognition of the candidates out there. One study conducted by a political science professor in 2005, found that people holding signs at intersections encouraging people to vote, the day before an election, increased turnout in those areas. A political yard sign likely won’t change a voter’s mind with regard to a certain candidate, the presence of the signs throughout election season may serve a purpose by mobilizing the voters. Although, if you have paid any attention to voter turnout in last Saturday’s election you would have to agree that the signs did not have an effect on voter turnout here in town or the state for that matter.
