Black Thumb Blunders: 6 Major Mistakes To Avoid When Growing Your Own Vegetables By now, we’re all familiar with the many trends that have dominated social media while we stay at home during the COVID-19 pandemic: the “quarantini,” virtual yoga classes, and sourdough starter, among others. But none took root quite like DIY vegetable gardening. Because let’s be honest: Nothing compares to a vine-ripened tomato picked straight from your garden, and touched by no one else. But just like that bread-making venture, vegetable gardening at home can be surprisingly easy to screw up. There’s way more to it than putting some seeds in the ground and hoping for a salad. If you’re a newbie gardener, you may have run into some rookie mistakes. Don’t sweat it! Check out the most common blunders the experts see budding green thumbs make—and how to get the perfect harvest instead. 1. Not watering your vegetables properly All plants need water to survive. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to apply that water. “The biggest mistake I see new gardeners make is not supplying enough water to their plants,” says horticulturalist Jessica Walliser. “They water in a way that I call ‘splash and dash,’ where they just sprinkle a little water on top of the soil or on the leaves, and don’t really give the plant a deep, thorough soaking.” In fact, watering “is a skill that takes time to learn,” says Niki Jabbour, a veteran gardener and author of “The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener.” Although shallow watering might keep your plants from wilting, a daily light watering can cause plants to form surface roots instead of deep roots, which help anchor the plant, Jabbour says. This will cause the plant to be susceptible to drought stress. So, how should you water your plants? “I like to water my vegetables deeply once or twice a week if there has been no rain,” Jabbour says. “I recommend holding the hose at the base of a plant for 15 seconds, then moving on to another plant. Then come back to the original plant three or four more times, for 15 seconds each time,” Walliser adds. “This really allows the water to
12 | JUNE 21, 2020 | ACADIA HOMEFINDER
soak down to the roots.” On average, plants need an inch of water per week. This can come from rain and/or water from a hose or irrigation system. Deep watering enables the plants to develop deep roots. “It also helps to mulch the soil surface with straw or shredded leaves,” Jabbour says. She suggests adding a 3-inch layer of mulch around tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash to help hold soil moisture, reduce weeds, and reduce the occurrence of soil-borne diseases like early tomato blight or verticillium wilt.
4. Overcrowding and over-planting Plant labels will also tell you how far apart to space your plants. Many new gardeners tend to overcrowd plants because they want to pack as much as they can into their new garden. Vegetables need room to grow and breathe. Planting them too close can lead to diseases such as powdery mildew, and provides a breeding ground for pests. Plus, there’s no reason to plant 20 varieties of tomatoes or other vegetables. Plant what you know you and your family will eat. This will save you time and money, and limit waste.
2. Getting the leaves wet On a related note: Resist the temptation to turn on a sprinkler and leave. “When watering my vegetables, I try to water the soil, not the foliage,” Jabbour says. “Wetting the leaves, particularly if you’re watering late in the day, can increase the risk of diseases for susceptible vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers.” If you don’t have time to hand-water each plant at its base, consider installing a soaker hose or drip irrigation system. They’re relatively inexpensive and easy to install. If it’s still not in the budget, try to water early in the day so that the plants have time to dry and not have moisture left on their leaves overnight. 3. Not reading plant labels Everything you need to know about plant care will be on the plant label or seed packet. This information will help you avoid surprises when it comes to harvest time. Take tomatoes, for instance. There are different types of tomato seedlings, and you’ll need to know if it’s an indeterminate or determinate variety, says Jabbour. Indeterminate—or vining tomatoes— can grow 6 or 7 feet tall. “Using a wire tomato cage to support it isn’t going to do much,” she says. “The plant will grow taller than the cage and eventually flop over and potentially damage the branches or developing fruits.” Instead, Jabbour stakes her tall-growing tomatoes with 7-foot-tall wooden stakes and secures the new growth with twine every week or so. “Tomato cages are best left to determinate varieties, or crops like peppers and eggplant,” Jabbour says.

5. Neglecting to regularly harvest your veggies Many crops will produce maximum yields only if they are harvested several times a week, Walliser says. Beans, for example—as well as tomatoes and peppers—should be harvested regularly to encourage the production of subsequent harvests. 6. Not employing succession planting Growing 10 green bean plants at a time will give you several bushels of beans you cannot possibly eat all at once. If you do not plan on preserving them, what are you going to do with the extras? Enter: succession planting.Succession planting will give you a nonstop harvest nearly year-round, depending on where you live. Plus, it also makes harvest time more manageable. Basically, you want to plant a few vegetables, wait a couple of weeks, and plant another row. That way, they don’t all mature at the same time and you constantly have access to fresh vegetables all season long. “One of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started gardening was not succession planting,” Jabbour says. “We planted all our vegetables in late spring, and as they were harvested, we never followed up with new seeds or seedlings.”

BOUNDARY DISPUTES ARE SOMETIMES TRICKY SITUATIONS

Q: I RECENTLY HAD MY LAND SURVEYED AND MY NEIGHBOR REFUSES TO CONCEDE THAT THE PROPERTY LINE IS WHERE THE SURVEYOR SAYS IT IS. WHAT DO I DO? A: First you should review the legal description contained in your sale and any other surveys to confirm the boundary is where the most recent survey sets the boundaries. You could ask the surveyor to place stakes on the corners of your property to clearly outline the boundaries. And, since your neighbor’s cash sale is part of the public record, you should get a copy of it and give it to your surveyor. The surveyor can then make sure that the boundary described in the neighbor’s cash sale matches the boundary described in your cash sale. If the descriptions match, your neighbor’s argument against your
claim to the boundary is most likely a losing one. However, if, you and your neighbor had an understanding as to the location of the boundary between your properties, and this understanding existed between the prior property owners, you might be in trouble. There is a concept in real estate law called adverse possession that gives land that has over time, been openly used by another the rights to that property. You might want to visit the tax assessor’s office to look at the map of the tax parcels in your area. If the tax parcel matches your property’s legal description, you can claim that you have been paying taxes on the land in question, further weakening your neighbor’s claim of adverse possession. All of these issues taken together will give you a better picture of where the property lines are and whether the neighbor has any claim to the ten feet. Good luck.

Q: MY EX-BOYFRIEND AND I OWN A PARCEL OF LAND TOGETHER. WE PURCHASED IT WITH THE INTENT TO BUILD, AND I PAID 75% OF THE PURCHASE PRICE, BUT FOR YEARS HE DID ALL THE CLEARING OF THE LAND AND MAINTAINING. WE HAVE BEEN BROKEN UP FOR SOME TIME, AND I HAVE DECIDED TO SELL. DO I OWE HIM ANYTHING; DO I HAVE TO GET HIS PERMISSION TO SELL? A: Since you and your ex-boyfriend bought the land together, you are co-owners in indivision under the law. As a co-owner, you cannot sell the property without his permission. That said, unless you and your ex can both agree to sell the property, you will have to hire a lawyer to file a lawsuit against you. And since it is essentially impossible to divide a house in a fair manner, the court will order that the property be sold and the proceeds split between the two of you. As a co-owner, he has the same rights as you do when it comes to occupying and

entering the property. If you mutually agree to sell the property, the title company will likely deliver the funds to you and your ex-boyfriend in the amounts you both specify. You cannot unilaterally decide how much to deduct from his share of the proceeds. Remember, each of you owns a portion of the land, and his signature will be needed when the property is sold. Basically, this means that the two of you will need to agree how much of the sales price belongs to you and how much belongs to him. You will need to factor in all the payments you’ve made over the years as well as the estimated value of his clearing and maintaining the property, and then arrive at a percentage or dollar amount of the net proceeds that belongs to each of you. As an alternative, you might consider offering to buy him out. Assuming the two of you can agree on a fair price for h half and that you have good enough credit to obtain a loan in your name alone, you can work a deal where he conveys his half of the property to you for a specified price.

ACADIAN HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
Top Design Trends For Your Home By Jeff Wood, President, Acadian Home Builders Association
The COVID-19 pandemic has provided a renewed sense of home and community for many. After months of sequestration within your home, however, you might also be in need of some fresh scenery—both outside and inside your residence. Design trends provide alluring sources of inspiration for updates, whether it’s a simple splash of color or creating a whole new addition. Here are a few ideas NAHB members are noticing across the country: Have fun with color. One the most popular areas to remodel is the kitchen. Gone are the stark-white cabinets, countertops and backsplashes. Instead, today’s designers are opting for on-trend deep blue and cool aqua tones, as well as dark woods and new, colored textures. Add a pop of intrigue to your kitchen through a bright backsplash, colorful kitchen island or a dropped ceiling with rich wood tones. Warm and cool color insertions don’t have to stop at the kitchen either. Cool color choices — think grays, blacks, and blues — add a modern aesthetic, while warm colors — especially wood elements — have a traditional appeal. The two combined create a look that is both dramatic and luxurious, yet also comfortable and homey, anywhere in the home. Another fun idea for 2020? Wallpaper. Not only can it be an inexpensive way to personalize a home, there are so many options to choose from — both in color and texture, as well as low- or no-volatile organic compound (VOC) — to create a vibrant, healthy home.
Get creative with storage. Today’s minimalist culture (thank you, Marie Kondo) lends itself to new trends in storage that are not only simple, but artistic. Open kitchen shelving or a mix of open and traditional cabinetry for upper cabinets, for example, provide practical storage solutions and added visual interest. Other areas that can benefit from this approach include wine cellars or under-stair displays that purposefully blend into the room. Connect the outdoors and indoors. Indoor/outdoor connections enhance livability — and look sophisticated, too. New technologies and increased availability of glass walls, pocket doors and large windows can create a seamless transition, both visually and physically. Visual connections such as large-format windows can also help. Floor-to-ceiling window walls and “glass box” style rooms are trending in all corners of the country, and in all neighborhoods, from urban to rural. And above all else, make it yours. Today’s home owners want a home that reflects their tastes. Simple examples include nontraditionally shaped, colored or otherwise unique hardware in spaces such as the kitchen and bathroom, as well as elements like distinctive stair rails, light fixtures and switch covers in more high-traffic areas.
