IS AN HRA RIGHT FOR MY BUSINESS? Q: I’M A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER AND AM CURIOUS ABOUT HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENTS AND HOW THEY WORK? A: Health reimbursement arrangements, also known as HRAs are tax-advantaged employer-sponsored accounts used to reimburse employees for qualified medical and dental expenses, such as co-payments, deductibles, and prescription drug costs. HRAs are sometimes offered in conjunction with high-deductible health plans. HRAs are different from a health savings account and health flexible spending accounts, as only an employer can contribute to the account. Employer contributions to the accounts and reimbursements for qualified medical expenses are exempt from federal income and payroll taxed. Also, unused funds rollover indefinitely. Unlike the health savings account, these funds may never be used for nonqualified expenses and employees may lose their unused funds if they separate from their employers.

An HRA can be an excellent way to provide health insurance benefits and allow employees to pay for a wide range of medical expenses not covered by insurance. HRAs can be a good alternative to small businesses that cannot afford to offer group health insurance, as the business chooses the amount of the allowance to offer its employees, While HRAs have been popular since the 1970s, they have undergone a fair amount of regulatory change since their introduction. If you are considering offering an HRA to your employees, I suggest you get with your financial advisor/CPA to discuss the best options for you and your business.

A: It’s incredible the amount of information that can be gained from a simple cheek swab! You are right to be concerned because if you don’t read the fine print with some of these companies, you may consent to any number of disclosures of your information. For instance, some of the companies share your data with law enforcement, and according to the New York Times, most companies sell your DNA data to third parties! Keep in mind, with a consumer DNA kit you don’t have the protections of HIPAA as you would if you had your doctor take a DNA sample. The New York Times recently published an article on this very subject and included to the following tips: Choose a more well-known company as they tend to be more accountable and their privacy policies are more comprehensive than smaller less well-known companies. The biggest names are 23andme, Ancestry.com, and MyHeritage. Each of these companies has privacy policies and specific instructions on how to delete data from each of them which includes your actual sample. But know that the United States government requires these DNA companies to retain DNA information in order to comply with quality control guidelines. As a result, it is never really possible to delete it forever. If I were you I would educate myself on the ins and outs of the privacy policies before you sign up. You may be giving away a lot more than you bargained for.

Installing celling fans are another way to provide energy-efficient cooling and comfort during the dog days of summer. HVAC Tune-up: Check the condition of your air conditioner and replace your filter. It can be challenging to find an available contractor to repair your HVAC in the middle of the summer. If your air conditioner in is good shape, you may want to add curtains, shades or blinds to windows help keep your home cool by blocking out the sun’s intense rays, which can warm your home’s interior.

Replace Windows: New windows can also increase your energy efficiency and provide a return on investment. If old windows are replaced now, the new ones will help prevent heat loss during the winter months and provide more indoor comfort. If you already have new windows, cleaning them will help refresh your home’s exterior.
