The Right Way To Mix Wood Furniture and Finishes: 6 Tips From Design Experts Remember the days of rooms filled with matching wood tones—everything purchased from a matching set and displayed exactly as they were arranged in the furniture showroom? Thankfully, those days are long gone. The trend these days is more eclectic, and filling your rooms with a mix of wood tones is not only allowed—it’s also encouraged! But after decades of believing that everything has to match just so, it can be challenging to retrain your brain to make smart and somewhat unconventional design choices. How do you match wood tones that don’t, well, match? How far is too far when it comes to mixing it up? We understand your confusion, and we’re here to help. We went straight to our interior design experts to find out their best tips for mixing wood tones, and how to translate these tips into your space.
floor have a light stain to it? If so, you should add darker furniture to the space to add a nice contrast to the room.” Thompson also suggests considering an area rug, even though it may mean covering up some of that gorgeous floor. “You could have a lot of different-colored wood furnishings in your room, but an area rug would be the perfect backdrop to tie the room together,” she explains. “It would act as common ground underneath all your chairs and table legs, which can create a pleasant transition between the seating area and the wood floor.” 2. Understand the undertones Mixing different types of wood like a pro means paying attention to the dominant wood tone in a room. This will typically be your hardwood floors, cabinets, or large pieces of furniture. Then identify the undertone.
There aren’t any strict rules (and that’s the fun of it), but here are a few guidelines to get you started in the right direction.
Most wood varieties—like walnut, oak, or cherry—have warm undertones, but you can also see the occasional cool undertone in wood that has been stained.
1. Consider your floor Your floor literally serves as the base of your room, so you can’t leave it out of the equation—especially if your floors are wood.
“If you’re OK with a bit of contrast, include darker woods like Brazilian cherry or mahogany alongside lighter woods like natural birch or pine,” says Rex Chatterjee, creative director of Dune Road Lifestyle.
Megan Thompson, owner of Denver-based interior design firm Spark Interiors, cautions against having your furniture pieces match too closely with the floor, or else they risk blending together.
3. Pay attention to the wood grain “Color isn’t the only thing that matters when designing with multiple wood tones,” explains Mark Scott, President of MARK IV Builders. “It’s important to remember to feature a mix of wood grain patterns such as stripes, swirls, and flame-like shapes to add visual interest in your design.
“Make those furnishings stand out by creating a contrast between the furniture and the flooring,” she explains. “Does your 12 | JULY 26, 2020 | ACADIA HOMEFINDER

“If you’re looking to create a rustic design, use larger wood grains. For a more polished, formal look, use smaller ones,” he adds. 4. Don’t go overboard Despite what you have heard, you can have too much of a good thing—and that’s also true with mixing wood finishes. “The last thing you want your design to do is make the room look chaotic because there’s too many wood colors,” says Scott. “Keep your choices to two or three wood finishes so everything throughout the space looks balanced.” 5. Don’t forget about painted woods Painted wood finds are everywhere you look these days, from boutique shops to yard sales, and they’re perfect for a space full of mixed wood tones. “Painted and distressed vintage finds add great character to your spaces,” says Kathryn Nelson, principal and interior designer at Kathryn Nelson Design. “They make for fun conversation pieces.” 6. Remember: It’s not all about wood Reality check: No one wants a room that’s nothing but wood. “Incorporate upholstered furniture or acrylic accessories to soften and add visual interest to the space,” says Keira Schultz, interior designer and principal at KSDesigns, in Arizona. “This will complement all those multiple wood finishes.”

GENERAL COUNSEL ® LIE DETECTOR FOR EMPLOYEES Q: AS PART OF THE HIRING PROCESS, CAN I REQUEST A JOB APPLICANT TAKE A LIE DETECTOR TEST?
Stephen J. Oats
A: It depends on the type business you operate. The Employee Polygraph Protection Act prohibits most private employers from using lie detector tests, either for pre-employment or during employment. The law does not cover Federal, state, and local government agencies. Generally, you may not require or request that any of your employees or job applicants to take a lie detector test, or discharge, discipline or discriminate against an employee or job applicant for refusing to take a lie detector test.
However, there are exceptions to the Act for job applicants of security service firms (armored car, alarm, guard) and of pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributer and dispensers. The Act also permits the testing of certain employees of private firms who are reasonably suspected of involvement in a workplace incident that resulted in specific economic loss or injury to that employer, such as theft, embezzlement, etc. Be advised where these tests are permitted, you are subject to strict standards, and the Act limits the disclosure of information obtained during a lie detector test. If you are involved in one of the excepted businesses, you should consult an attorney who is experienced in labor and employment law as you can be subject to penalties for violating the Act.
IF DEVELOPER’S PROMISE IS NOT IN WRITING IT’S PROBABLY NOT ENFORCEABLE

Q: I SIGNED A CONTRACT WITH A LOCAL BUILDER AND SPECIFICALLY TOLD THE DEVELOPER THAT I WANTED TO BUILD ON THE LAST LOT OF THE STREET BECAUSE I DIDN’T WANT A HOUSE NEXT TO US. HE TOLD US THAT NO ONE COULD BUILD ON THE LOT NEXT TO OURS BECAUSE IT WAS TOO NARROW, AND THERE WERE SOME EASEMENTS OR SERVITUDES IN PLACE THAT PREVENTED HIM FROM BUILDING ON IT. A FEW WEEKS AGO, I NOTICED A “FOR SALE” SIGN ON THE LOT NEXT TO OUR HOUSE. WHEN I CALLED THE DEVELOPER TO ASK HIM ABOUT IT, HE SAID HE HAD CHANGED HIS MIND, AND THOUGHT THE LOT WAS MARKETABLE. HE IS ASKING

$32,000 FOR THE LOT BUT SAID HE WOULD SELL IT TO US FOR $15,000 INSTEAD. SHOULD WE PAY TO BUY THE LOT? A: As a general rule, conditions that are specific to a real estate are not enforceable unless they are in writing. Unfortunately, even though you and the developer had an agreement, if it was not in writing, there is not much you can do to enforce it now. The good news is you have a remedy that is not outrageously expensive. If you buy the lot for $15,000 you might never regret purchasing it, but if you don’t, and someone chooses to buy it and build on it, you could be sorry. It sounds like the developer knows he will have a tough time selling that lot and is looking to make a little extra cash. Whether or not you decide to buy the lot is up to you. Good luck!

Coronavirus Concerns Spark New Home Design IDEAS
Home owners have transformed their living spaces into classrooms, home offices and gyms this year. With people spending more time at home, the future of home design is being reimagined. As home owners seek out ways to maximize the functionality their living spaces, here are some of the budding trends in home design and renovation. Modifying Mudrooms and Entryways. A simple area to take off jackets or rainboots when entering your home is no longer an afterthought. Now a focal point, home entryways and mudrooms are a space where mail is dropped off, groceries/delivery boxes are collected, face coverings are removed, or hands are sanitized. Future home design will take these activities in consideration when creating a functional, cohesive and comfortable entryway.
Incorporating Touchless/Hands-Free Home Features. Materials such as copper have natural antimicrobial elements that have the potential to reduce the spread of microbes. Doorknobs, kitchen cabinet handles and other home hardware with copper or other antimicrobial materials could grow in popularity. Touchless faucets, hands-free light fixtures or appliances may also gain widespread usage.
Creating Private Spaces. Getting homework, virtual play dates and work conference calls completed all in the same space at the same time is a challenge. New small, convertible spaces or nooks in homes can help a full house function a bit better with an additional private or semi-private space.
Finding Storage Solutions. From more space to store non-perishable food, home office accessories or items in the entryway, a place for everything is generating appeal for home owners. With more time at home, additional storage space will be a valuable feature in future home designs.
Transforming Outdoor Spaces. A functional space to comfortably host a socially distanced backyard cookout or dinner will likely be an attractive design feature. Simple improvements from upgrading patio furniture to building out decks will be at the top of any exterior home feature must-have lists.
