Regular lawn maintenance is critical to boosting your home’s curb appeal. What about adding or caring for plants inside your home? Plants not only spruce up the interior of your home, they can improve your overall comfort. The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) research found that including plants in your home can improve indoor air quality. If you’re ready to add some verdant energy to your living space, below are tips and ideas to consider: Select plants optimal for indoor growth. You don’t need a green thumb

Don’t worry about watering.

Read care instructions carefully for recommendations on hydration. Most indoor plants die from overwatering. With too much water, the soil gets soggy and oxygen cannot reach the root of the plant. Yellowing plants are a sign you are watering too much.

to improve your home décor. There are many varieties of plants conductive to staying alive and well in your home. Types of plants you should consider are: aloe, English ivy, rubber tree, ficus and areca palm. Your local nursery can provide more recommendations. Not all plants are pet friendly. Make sure to research the greenery you select before bringing it home.

Choose direct or indirect sun. Most

indoor houseplants work well in indirect light. Sun-soaking plants should be placed near a window. Sun is needed at least five hours a day. Plants are living things and are impacted by temperatures. When cooler weather season arrives, remember to move your plants further from the window or consider adding a sheer curtain.

Get creative with displays. There are endless ways to showcase plants in your home. If you prefer to group your indoor greenery think about the arrangement. Group plants in an odd number and select different sizes for an informal, inviting look. If you want your plant arrangement to stand out, incorporate a variety of leaf colors, textures and pots. Make sure the plants require the about the same amount of sun, so your group of greenery looks vibrant year round.

Create a plant maintenance kit.

Once you’ve found the ideal plants for your home, consider creating an indoor gardening toolkit. Keeping plants healthy and vibrant is easy when you have the right tools in an easily accessible spot. Tools may vary based on the types of plants you select. Basic items you should include are a hand fork, pruner, indoor watering can and transplanter.

BLOCKED RIGHT-OF-WAY Q: I HAVE SEVERAL ACRES OF UNDEVELOPED PROPERTY NORTH OF LAFAYETTE THAT I USE FROM TIME TO TIME FOR HUNTING AND FISHING. A LONG TIME AGO, I WAS GRANTED A RIGHT-OF-WAY THROUGH A SMALL PORTION MY NEIGHBOR’S LAND THAT GIVES ME ACCESS TO A PORTION MY PROPERTY. THE RIGHT-OF-WAY WAS ESTABLISHED WHEN THE PROPERTY WAS PARTITIONED. MY NEIGHBOR IS NOW DOING THINGS TO BLOCK OFF MY ACCESS. FOR EXAMPLE, HE RECENTLY PUT A METAL GATE ACROSS THE ROADWAY. WHAT CAN I DO TO ENFORCE THE RIGHT-OF-WAY?

A: You should start by showing your neighbor the document that gave you the right-of-way. Assuming you were, in fact, granted a right-of-way, then it’s clearly illegal for your neighbor to deny you access to your land.

If your neighbor continues to try and block your access, you should hire a lawyer with experience in real estate matters to help you. To start, your lawyer will probably want to review the document that partitioned the land, because that is what sets forth your rights. If you’re lucky, a letter from your lawyer will be enough to put a stop to your neighbor’s actions. Unfortunately, however, if your neighbor continues to block your access, you’ll probably have no option but to sue.

FOR A FIRE INSURANCE CLAIM, WHAT PROOF IS ENOUGH PROOF? Q: IF OUR HOUSE WAS TO BE DESTROYED BY FIRE, WHAT KIND OF INFORMATION WOULD OUR INSURANCE COMPANY NEED FROM US IN ORDER TO PROCESS OUR CLAIM? WOULD WE HAVE TO PRODUCE A COPY OF OUR HOMEOWNER’S POLICY OR WOULD THEY HAVE THAT ON FILE?

A: You won’t have to produce a copy of your policy. Your insurance company can provide you with a copy. As for other types of information you will need, the more you have, the better. In almost all cases, you will be asked to list, item by item, what you owned. This can be a very tedious and stressful process, especially, when you have been ousted from your home. To ensure the claim process goes smoothly, you should make a detailed inventory of your belongings now. You should also photograph or videotape the interior and exterior of your house. Of course, you should store this list and the video or photos somewhere other than your home, because you don’t want them to be destroyed along with your possessions. Pictures and/or video footage are important because, not only can they help you identify precisely what you owned, but they can also help you remember your smaller possessions. If you forget things that you had in your house, and those items aren’t accounted for in your claim, they won’t be replaced. Obviously, you don’t want this to happen. Of course, there are a few exceptions to this rule. For example, you won’t be forced to prove that you owned common basics, like kitchen utensils, etc. If you don’t have photographs or a video of your possessions, your insurance company may accept other types of proof instead (i.e. affidavits from friends attesting to your ownership of various items). Canceled checks, credit-card receipts and billing statements, bank statements, and warranty information can also help build a paper trail. If the originals are destroyed, copies can frequently be requested from the issuing banks and companies. Finally, all homeowners should review their insurance coverage regularly to make sure it’s adequate. You don’t want to get caught in a situation where you don’t have enough insurance coverage to rebuild and/or replace all your possessions.
