RESTORING YOUR GOOD NAME AFTER EXPERIENCING IDENTITY THEFT Q: I READ YOUR ARTICLE A FEW SUNDAYS AGO REGARDING IDENTITY THEFT, AND WAS WONDERING HOW DOES A PERSON WHO HAS BEEN A VICTIM RESTORE THEIR GOOD NAME? A: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has a form called the ID Theft Affidavit, which is designed to help people like you restore your name and credit. The ID Theft Affidavit is used to report information to various businesses, and it simplifies the process of disputing charges with companies where a new account was opened in your name. This form is available at the FTC’s Web site, www. consumer.gov/idtheft or www.ftc.gov/bcp/ edu/microsites/idtheft/. The FTC also has a toll-free Identity Theft Hotline at 877-IDTHEFT (877-4384338) that you can call if you have been the victim of identity theft. Counselors are available to help answer your questions and to help you resolve the problems you are facing. Identify theft is becoming increasingly common, but there are a few steps you can take to make sure it doesn’t happen to you again. For example, be careful when giving out personal information, especially your Social Security number. When setting up personal identification numbers or passwords, avoid using easily obtainable information like your mother’s maiden name, your date of birth, or the last four digits of your Social Security

number. You should also take steps to make sure your incoming and outgoing mail is never stolen. If you suspect your identity has been stolen, you should immediately contact the fraud departments of each of the three major credit bureaus and make a report. You can request that a “fraud alert” be placed on your file and that no new credit be given without your approval. All three bureaus have anti-fraud departments that can assist you. When you contact the credit bureaus, be sure to order a copy of your credit report from each one and check to make sure no fraudulent accounts were overlooked.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SAVING FOR RETIREMENT Q: I AM A YOUNG PROFESSIONAL WITH A FAMILY. ANY ADVICE BEFORE I BEGIN SHOPPING A 401K PLAN? A: First things first, the earlier you start saving in a 401k the better off you will be years down the road. If you are new to your career and paycheck, get in the habit of contributing now and you won’t even miss the money! Here are a few things to keep in mind while considering participation in a 401k. You will benefit from tax breaks. Your money contributed is pre-tax money from your salary which lowers your taxable income and helps cut that tax bill. There is a limit to how much cash you can set aside. The IRS sets an annual limit of $17,500 unless you are 50 or older, then you can contribute an extra $5,400.

Does your employer match your contribution? Many companies will match an employee’s contribution up to a certain percentage. If you cannot contribute the maximum amount, try to at least contribute to take full advantage of your employer’s match. Its free money! Pay attention to hidden fees, such as investment fees, administrative fees, etc. The federal government issued a new rule that requires companies to do a better job of disclosing all of the fees you pay for your 401k. You should consult your benefits manager for details on your 401k and the plan’s costs. Good luck!

Home Purchasing Plans Largely Unchanged in 2020

The spread of coronavirus upended almost everything in 2020 with lockdowns and other public health interventions disrupting daily life. How did the pandemic affect potential home buyers this year? According to a recent National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Housing Trends Report, online survey results showed the spread of COVID-19 did not change home purchasing plans for many Americans this year. According to the report, the share of Americans who are considering the purchase of a home in the next 12 months was 11 percent in the second quarter of 2020, essentially flat when compared to the same quarter in 2019 (12 percent). The survey finding indicates that the overall propensity of Americans who want to buy a home has not been impacted by the pandemic. However, generational differences among potential home buyers was stark. In the second quarter of 2020, millennials — adults 24 to 39 years old — were the generation most likely to want to buy a home (19 percent), a sentiment slightly higher than a year earlier (17 percent). In contrast, Boomers, adults 56 to 74 years old, were the least likely to plan for a home purchase (five percent). Home purchasing plans by region were similar. The share of survey respondents who were prospective home buyers was unchanged in the Northeast (10 percent) and South (12 percent), essentially flat in the West (13 percent), and just slightly lower in the Midwest (down from 11 percent to nine percent) from the previous year. One of the challenges home buyers are encountering this year, in addition to affordability, is a delay in their home search due to the rising number of multiple offers on the same property. The survey found that nearly a third (30 percent) of active buyers reported getting outbid by another buyer in the second quarter of 2020, significantly higher than the comparable 18 percent share a year earlier. For house hunters who have been actively searching for a home for at least three months, more than half (51 percent) say they will continue looking for the “right” home in the same preferred location; while 37 percent will expand their search area; and less than a quarter (21 percent) is willing to accept a smaller/older home.
