The Giving Keeps Going with Home for the Holidays AHBA & KATC-TV3 Cut Ribbon on 11th Annual Raffle House Project
The Acadian Home Builders Association (AHBA) and KATC-TV3 kicked off their Annual Home for the Holidays Project with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, September 9th. This year marks eleventh anniversary of the raffle house project which has donated over $1.4 Million to Acadiana non-profit shelter organizations.
This year’s Home for the Holidays is located in Tuscany Subdivision off Farrell Road in Lafayette and is being built by AHBA member Mike Thompson of Mike Thompson Homes. Designed by Jarod Hebert Architect, the house features 2,624 sq. ft. of living space, four bedrooms, three bathrooms and many luxury amenities. It is valued at over $490,000.
Present at the ribbon cutting were representatives of the project’s recipient charities, sponsors, volunteers and members of One Acadiana, formerly the Lafayette Area Chamber of Commerce.
Other prizes will be given away throughout the duration of the threemonth project including a 2016 Cadillac SRX, a $10,000 Home Makeover Package, diamond earrings valued at $8,000, a GE CaféTM stainless steel French-door refrigerator, GoPro Hero4 cameras, gift cards to area restaurants and shops, and much more.
Home for the Holidays is an event in which AHBA members construct a high-end home and then raffle it off for charity. Recipients of project proceeds include Faith House, Healing House for Grieving Children, Lafayette Habitat for Humanity, and St. Michael’s Center for Veterans, a shelter of Catholic Services of Acadiana.
Raffle tickets for the Home for the Holidays are $100 each and on sale at all Doug Ashy Building Materials stores, Acadiana locations of Home Bank and at the AHBA office. They can also be purchased by phone at (337) 981-3053 or online at www.HomeForTheHolidaysLA. com.

Q: MY WIFE AND I ARE RETIRED, AND I WOULD LIKE TO STRUCTURE SOME OF OUR FINANCES TO INSURE THAT SHE IS TAKEN CARE OF IF I PREDECEASE HER. HOW DO I GO ABOUT TRANSFERRING OWNERSHIP OF THE FAMILY HOME TO HER? AND, IS THE PROCEDURE THE SAME EVEN IF WE STILL HAVE A MORTGAGE ON THE HOUSE?
Q: AS AN EMPLOYER, ARE THERE ANY LEGAL RESTRICTIONS THAT I SHOULD BE AWARE OF WHEN FIRING, SUSPENDING, OR DISCIPLINING EMPLOYEES?
A: Transferring a home is relatively simple. All
you need to do is sign an Act of Donation, which gives your interest in the house to your wife. You will need to specify in the Act of Donation that you intend for the property to become part of your wife’s separate estate. Also, keep in mind, if your wife pre-deceases, chances are, you will have no ownership interest in the property, unless she leaves it to you in her will.

That Act of Donation would need to be recorded in the Conveyance Record of the parish where the home is located. Typically, an attorney would charge $150 to $250 to prepare a simple Act of Donation, if no title exam was required. The fee to record the document with the Clerk of Court would probably be about $35. If there’s a mortgage on your house, then the transfer of your portion of the home from you to your wife may trigger what is sometimes called a “due on sale” clause. That means the lender may require payment of the entire remaining principal balance of the loan immediately. If you don’t have the cash to pay the loan off in full, you do have a few options. For example, your wife could refinance the property with the same lender, or another one. If your wife has good credit, refinancing may be a feasible solution. However, if your wife has bad credit, lenders may not be willing to refinance without you co-signing for the loan.

A: Yes, there most certainly are. Louisiana is an employment-at-will state. Basically, this means that as an employer, you may hire, fire, suspend, or discipline an employee at any time and for any reason, or no reason at all. However, you may not discriminate against an employee on the basis of race, sex, age, religion, color, national origin, or disability. Louisiana law also prohibits employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or a handicap. Louisiana’s “whistle blower’s law” also prohibits an employer from retaliating against an employee who reports or threatens to report an employer for being in violation of a law. An employer also cannot fire an employee who refuses to participate in an employment act that is in violation of Louisiana law. There are also a few more exceptions to Louisiana’s employment-at-will doctrine that you should be aware of as an employer. Louisiana employees may note be disciplined or discharged for: •
Being called to military service
•
Their political opinions or voting
•
Exercising right of association
•
Wage garnishment
•
Filing a worker’s compensation claim; or
•
Being called to jury duty
Another option would be for you and your wife to obtain approval for the transfer in advance from your lender. They may be willing to allow the transfer to your wife - especially if you have been prompt with your payments in the past, and/or if you have a substantial amount of equity built up in the property.
