The theme of my portfolio is "the Variation of Symbols", a collection of works about the new definition of old symbols, reflecting my perception of the world from different angles and scales. These four works will showcase my technical abilities, my ability to innovate, and my thinking about the human experience. However, I am not satisfied with the results achieved so far. So I'm looking forward to using the advanced expertise I will gain at UCL to design more projects for the public.

"Pingtung" Impressions

Location: Pingtung, Taiwan Province
Type: Individual Project
Duration: 2021.8-2021.9
From the time when the Dutch set foot on this island to the period of the Republic of China, the sugar industry culture in Pingtung, Tainan County, Taiwan Province was flourishing, and even in the later years, "Taiwan Sugar" became a distinctive label of Pingtung.
With the growth of Taiwan's sugar industry, its economic boom and bust, and its tourism industry, many important historical memories are being lost. At present, Pingtung, Sugar and iron industry and Taiwan sugar industry urgently need to create an effective communication path, build a linear tourism belt, and revitalize Pingtung's road trip related economy. Among them, Pingtung Citizen Park will be the most important component of this project.
The Taiwan Sugar Railway cuts through the bustling streets, factories and streets of Pingtung, and some temples to the vast sugarcane forests and into the future. Along the railway line, I extracted key impressions of Pingtung culture, farmland, ecology and industry. By capturing these types of Pingtung's impressions, this case breaks the boundary of the site that has been closed for 16 years in a way that combines rationality and sensibility, creating a landscape
HISTORY OF PINGTUNG DEVELOPMENT
Pingtung Space-time Positioning
Development of Pingtung
The site is the remnant of a sugar factory, an important historical treasure of the city. The rise and fall of Taiwan's sugar industry is closely related to the development of the city.
For the older generation, Taiwan's sugar industry has brought them glory. For the younger generation, Taiwan's sugar industry has a glorious but murky history.
This project needs to focus on how to reproduce and connect historical memory and discover the law of the constant evolution of the site.

1994-2021
Before 1909
Today's Pingtung County in Taiwan were once the territories of the Pai Wan and Ping Po ethnic groups.
The sugar industry in Taiwan can be traced back to the period of Dutch rule, but the overall development of the region was slow.
1946-1994 Taiwan Government/Paper factories
1939-1945 World War ||
Era of Japanese Rule
In 1909, Japanese colonists set up a sugar factory in the city of Agou.
In 1937, the sugar factory built a large chimney and stood in the sky. With the sugar industry driving the local economy, all kinds of infrastructures were successfully established.

Zheng Chenggong was appointed to this post.
Qing dynasty 1636-1919
As Agou citiy grew from villages to smaller cities, urban fortress was built.
So far Pingtung city street buildings are completed.
Under Japanese rule
1920-1944
A sugar factory was set up in the area, and the sugar railway came into being. This area was officially named "Pingtung".
ROC 1945-1949
Local faith-based cultures prospered.
PRC 1949Sugar industry was at its peak from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Century 2000With the development of the sugar industry and the opening of a paper mill in the area, Pingtung began to seek multifaceted development.

Sugar Industry Heyday
The golden period of sugar industry was from 1950s to 1970s, and sugar income became the main source of foreign exchange income.
From 1976 to 1977, sugar production peaked.
Pingtung Paper Mill was put into trial operation on September 1, 1977.
Since the 1990s, Taiwan's sugar industry has declined, and sugar factories have been transformed into biotechnology, recreation, rail transportation and other businesses.

Then, I rearrange them and apply them back to the field, as shown on the right.

project the specific contents reflected in the four impressions extracted before into the site design, and use the remaining sugar railway as the connecting line to connect these four different urban impressions.

RENDERINGS OF THE MAIN NODES OF THE SCHEME

Taiwan Market——Lively place with feeling the old and new things
This key node can embody the texture of "industry" and "street". There used to be many industrial relics of sugar factories scattered here. I endowed them with new functions, and combined with the local characteristics of southern Taiwan, built the Taiwan style snack street and the historical development exhibition hall of Taiwan sugar industry.
Taiwan Flowers——Vast, grand, and desirable fairyland
This key junction can reflect the texture of "industry" and "agriculture". In the peak period of sugar production, the train would pass through the sugar cane forest, which was the most beautiful scenery at that time. In the scheme, I designed this place as a sea of flowers, and retained and restored the original train track, aiming to reproduce this scenery.
Water Purification Facilities——A place full of novelty and desire to explore
This key node can reflect the texture of "ecology". There are several water purification facilities left here because of the sugar factory and printing factory. Although they have been abandoned, I think they have the possibility to be rebuilt.
Central Square——Quiet, vast, cleansing the soul of the holy land
This key node can reflect the texture of "culture". Residents in southern Taiwan believe in various gods and Buddhas, so ancestral halls and temples are very common here. By extracting their characteristics, I made artistic and adaptive expression in the design site.
“Mangkam" Ecotope

The ancient salt pans of Mankam in Tibet are over 1,300 years old and are classified as intangible cultural heritage. The area does not rely on the salt industry as its main source of economy, but mainly relies on mushroom digging, livestock rearing and tree logging, which has caused considerable damage to the local environment. A series of natural disasters such as landslides and rising river levels have affected the safety of local residents and tourists as well as the continuation of the salt civilization
This project aims to reshape the productive landscape of the salt pans and the living areas of the inhabitants. While ensuring that the ecology is not destroyed, by combining the abandoned wooden frame of the salt pans with locally grown mushrooms , an attempt is made to create a production model that shifts from natural predation to artificial reproduction, transforming from predation to co-existence.

Many abandoned salt pans in Mankam provide an ideal environment for fungus growth.
The growing season of the Mankam Plateau meadow grassland is the peak season for the Tibetans to dig herbs and pick mushrooms. If left unchecked, the practice can wreak havoc on the fragile local ecology.
The whole salt field is so big, I wish there is a place to sit.
If the salt pans had a place to store tools temporarily, we wouldn't have to carry them back and forth every day!
It rains a lot during the rainy season in MangKam, and it's too dangerous for the river to overflow! Could there be a temporary shelter in the salt pans?
These fungi go one of two ways when they're picked……
On the one hand, it can be routinely sold in the market
How beautiful it is! really want to learn Salt Pans and Tibetan culture!
Hey man! Have you ever heard of mycelium materia?
The salt is too heavy. Could we have a transfer station on the road?
The salt needs to be stored in a cool place immmediately. The combination of abandoned salt pans and mushroom farming is a wonderful idea!
This sunbaked salt must be stored quickly, or it will lose its texture!! Right!
Hahahahaha this is so spectacular! Why can't there be homestay here?
Nice to have a family house here.
Finally, The wooden frame + The mycelium of a mushroom Develope a sustainable, locally adapted model, which could improve residents' happiness and safety, and revive the ancient Salt Pan culture,

Yep, there should be proper places for education, so that more people can learn about Salt pans and inherit culture. The salt pans here are 1300 years old……
On the other hand, it can be used to produce new mycelium materials……

There are 338 salt pans in total, covering a total area of 35,000 square meters. They are 445 meters long from north to south and 95 meters wide from east to west. The top layer is about 95 meters from the river and about 30 meters above the river.
There are 80 salt pans in total, covering a total area of 28,000 square meters. They are 364 meters long from north to south, 77 meters wide from east to west, and 41 meters apart in height. The top layer is about 120 meters from the river.
There are 121 salt pans with a total area of about 30,000 square meters. They are 474 meters long from north to south and 115 meters wide from east to west, with a height difference of 50.47 meters.

NEW MATERIAL APPLICATION DEMONSTRATION
This project attempts to recreate the production landscape of the salt pans and the living areas of the surrounding residents. We combine the abandoned salt pans with the local fungi and try to create a production mode from natural plunder to artificial reproduction.
This project explores the potential of mycelium to return to natural design paradigms. Based on that, the mycelium is interconnected to form a network that can transfer nutrients between the mushroom and mycelium, while enhancing the function of the old wood frame itself, creating a sustainable ecosystem within the structure. The mycelium will attach itself to the wooden frame and grow, build and repair itself, adapting to the natural environment and sensing everything that humans can sense.

In the design site of Wuxi section of Ancient Canal, the upstream is the ancient Canal resort rich in historical sites, and the downstream is the polluted area where farmland and factories intermingle. In order to meet people's demand for a better life and make up for the shortage of the existing ancient Canal scenic belt elements, this scheme is committed to extending the Wuxi Ancient Canal Tourism Resort downstream, and combining the characteristics of the Wuxi section of the ancient Canal, such as culture, industry, water town and other ecological protection in this area
We choose the HIGH-TECH AIRPORT LOGISTICS PARK in the river basin as the specific site for design display. Based on the current situation of the site, the extracted texture is designed adaptively, and the brownfield transformation is carried out in combination with ecological methods

The government has paid more and more attention to environmental protection.
A series of ecological policies and measures have been implemented.
1978
Since the Reform and Opening-up, Wuxi has witnessed vigorous industrial development, rapid economic growth and urban expansion.
Local development has brought about all kinds of pollution to the environment, which pollutes the soil and water systems.
1600-1895
At that time, the canal was dotted with grain processing industries, such as rice markets. And there were many handicrafts, such as kiln firing.
In the early period of primitive agricultural society, this is a large wasted farmland , people reclaimed this land to engage in basic agricultural activities and put down roots here.
After Reform and opening-up, industry began to develop rapidly, and large areas of farmland were occupied to build factories
With the development of industry, economic growth is promoted, the rapid expansion of cities is gradually towards Taihu Lake, and the industrial and domestic wastewater is discharged to Taihu Lake, resulting in the gradual deterioration of the ecology of Taihu Lake
STRATEGIES APPLIED TO SITE DESIGN
ANALYSIS CONCEPT STRATEGIES
Poplar cultivation
To extend the ancient canal cultural charm of the upper reaches downstream. SITE
Design techniques used:
1. Plant poplars to purify soil and clean the sewage with clean pools.
2. Remodel industrial relics.
3. Reproduce the traditional culture of the Wuxi section of this canal in a new way.
4. Reproduce the watertown culture in the form of wetlands
MORPHOLOGY CHANGE
Due to poor management and increased pollution, factories have moved out, farmland has been abandoned, the attractions are weakened, and the various textures are isolated from each other and cannot be integrated.
Ecological water purification

Railway Canal
The above situation needs urgent improvement. Reorganizing the texture of these elements extracted from space & time, integrating urban memory and adapting to the current site characteristics can create a waterfront industrial zone with unified production value, ecological value and life value.

RENDERINGS OF MAIN NODES OF THE SITE
site Plant a poplar tree every 35 meters.
" View poplar trees and industrial ruins from the viaduct ": The cultural elements of the design site were extracted from the ancient bridge. On the site, we present it as connection, combining with the soil restoration of the poplar forest to become a characteristic ecological landscape.

" The revetment of old industrial relics endowed with ecological value ": On the basis of retaining the original industrial buildings, we added permeable ecological pavement and platform to connect the old and new landscape, man-made and ecological.
" Wetland landscape transformed from farmland texture ": We transformed the abandoned factory building nearby into a viewing corridor, and transformed the abandoned site into a featured agricultural park to form a productive landscape.
New Modular Building for New Era
Location: Manhattan, New York
Type: Individual Project Duration: 2022.10-2022.11
The Hyperloop has received increasing attention in recent years and this project considers how it will change the way our communities are modeled. The project builds a collective modular residential community based on a Hyperloop station that meets the efficient characteristics of the hyperloop, while incorporating a dockside walkway and a subsea hyperloop tube system, which are connected by a central lift. The building works at maximum efficiency in terms of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, which greatly enhances the efficiency of residents' lives and enriches their community experience.

Evolution of unit
Soften the edge Cut off monomer
The smooth edge corresponds better to the appearance of the hyperloop.
Improve porosity
The porosity creates relatively separate living spaces for residents as well as a greater abundance of daylight.
Evolution of combination
The linear arrangement will seriously affect the view of the residents. I have reorganised the way the units are combined.
The mountain layout ensures that there are no dead corners in the view, and the landscape resources become one of the advantages of the building.
In form, a tubular appearance has been adopted, in keeping with the hyperloop style, to increase porosity and break up depressions in the form.
A spiral upward trend along the outside of the building is set of cavities and outdoor stairs, which extends the range of vision for residents.
This project is a dynamic comprehensive community integrating commercial and residential space with hyperloop station, which reflects the design techniques of modular construction and geometric density of space.

Hyperloop's efficient, fast and convenient transportation features guarantee the travel of residents, and facilitate the transportation of wood and other construction materials of building complex.
The timber effectively reduces the hardness of the hyperloop's steel, providing a more comfortable living experience for residents.

HORIZONTAL SECTION OF THE POSITIVE AXIS SIDE VERTICAL SECTION VIEW
Studio 1
It is half of a single unit, with five functions: bathroom, kitchen, hall, balcony and living room. It mainly serves people living alone.
One bedroom
It is a complete single unit, with six functions: bathroom, kitchen, hall, balcony, bedroom and living room. Compared with the studio, it has more storage space, and the bedroom and living room are separated, mainly serving couples.
Two bedrooms 1 It is a semi-unit, and the function is basically the same as onebedroom, one more bedroom than the one-bedroom. It mainly serves nuclear families.
Three bedrooms 1 It is a complete two units, one more bedroom than the two bedrooms, other basically the same mainly to serve the extended family.
Studio 2
It's almost the same as Studio 1. It has the same function, but differ slightly in area and spatial arrangement.

Two bedrooms 2 It is almost the same as two bedrooms 1.
Three bedrooms 2 It is almost the same as three bedrooms 1.
If the building block is too compact, it will give people a sense of pain and depression, and the appearance of hyperloop full of hard technology will increase people's sense of tension imperceptible. Therefore, I use light, soft and warm wood materials to try to reduce negative emotions.
The aluminium cladding of the building is also in a gradient of warm colours, which creates an interesting facade.
ARCHITECTURAL PERSPECTIVE
Above water perspective
The tubular housing complex has a lift well in the middle. The top is made of glass, which creates a magical column of light underwater. This not only satisfies the lighting of the station, but also creates a wonderful view.

Under water perspective
The underwater station has two levels.
The minus one floor has round freight tubes on either side. The minus two level is the tube for the circulation of people.
The sea is reflected in the ceiling of the station, which creates an attractive atmosphere.
I have redefined a new community model that integrates "Hyperloop Station", "Dockside Walk" and "Modular Residential Area" to ensure the convenience for people to commute and the efficient transportation of goods.
