Ask a

WHAT’S YOUR UNEXPECTED BUFFALO? We asked six locals to share with us what they find most surprising and unexpected about Buffalo. They offer the inside scoop on places and experiences visitors shouldn’t miss, and reflections on what sets the Queen City apart.

I’ve played all around the world. The audience in Buffalo is knowledgeable and yet they’re appreciative and enthusiastic. As a newcomer, it’s really a treat to have people appreciate the work we do and what we prepare. We’ll sometimes get one or two standing ovations a night. It’s a special feeling here.

Just walk. Ride your bike. Visit the neighborhoods, the ones that aren’t on the front page. Stop at these little holes in the wall. It’s there that you find the most passionate Buffalonians. There’s a great sense of community in these small places.

If you really want to know what Buffalo neighborhoods are like, step into one of our corner taverns nestled amidst cottages in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood and the Old First Ward. They are the neighborhood living room and as important as the library or the post office or the coffee shop as gathering places.

It’s old school in a way, where you have a specialty shop on every corner. That’s still alive in the neighborhoods here. It feels like you discover a local’s only secret when you discover these spots. On the way from point A to point B you can just be walking down the street and stumble upon the place with the perfect sandwich.

REBUILD IT, AND THEY WILL COME

OPEN-AIR AUTOBUS

ERIC FRICK

BUFFALO’S NEW MOTTO COULD WELL BE “REBUILD IT, AND THEY WILL COME,” as ambitious restoration projects have spurred renewed interest in the region’s potential as an open-air museum of American architecture. One prime example is the RICHARDSON OLMSTED COMPLEX, a National Historic Landmark designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, along with surrounding grounds by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.

The former psychiatric facility will come back to life this year following decades of disuse with the opening of the 88-room HOTEL HENRY URBAN RESORT CONFERENCE CENTER, the accompanying 100 ACRES: THE KITCHENS AT HOTEL HENRY and the BUFFALO ARCHITECTURE CENTER, an exhibit space dedicated to telling the story of the city’s extraordinary built environment.

ARCHITECTURE

MARTIN HOUSE COMPLEX

Designed for one of Wright’s steadfast patrons, Buffalo industrialist Darwin D. Martin, this interconnected complex of six buildings is Wright’s Buffalo residential masterpiece and an outstanding example of his Prairieera principles writ large. Having suffered abandonment and deterioration, the complex is now nearing completion of its comprehensive restoration. darwinmartinhouse.org

PATRICK MAHONEY, AIA

Happy 150th, Frank! Architecture aficionados from around the world seek out Frank Lloyd Wright’s distinctly American designs, and Buffalo has one of the finest collections of his work. Ring in the 150th anniversary of Wright’s birth by visiting these iconic sites around Buffalo, which served as a crucial turning point in the architect’s early career.

ALL WRIGHT, ALL DAY

Wright sketched out designs for three other Buffalo structures that weren’t built until after his death. The Fontana Boathouse stands proudly at the confluence of Lake Erie and the Niagara River; the Frank Lloyd Wright Filling Station, originally intended for a Buffalo street corner in 1927, was completed 87 years later in the Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum and the Blue Sky Mausoleum rests along a sloping hill facing a serene pond in Forest Lawn Cemetery. See them all on an All Wright, All Day bus tour offered seasonally. FONTANA BOATHOUSE

BUFFALO AERIAL PICTURES

GRAYCLIFF ESTATE

Wright’s summer home for the Martin family, set on a cliff high above Lake Erie, bears the geologically evocative name Graycliff. It encapsulates Wright’s design principles in a relatively fallow period of his career, and offers glimpses of masterworks to come. The estate’s buildings and grounds are in the midst of a comprehensive restoration, and open for a variety of year-round tours. graycliffestate.org

The weck roll is a magical balance of being elegant on one hand and sturdy enough to sop up plenty of gravy and not totally fall apart. The combination of the beef, the quality of the roll and all that crunch on top of the roll. It really creates this amazing harmony that is unequaled by any other beef sandwich that I know. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Where I am in South Carolina, forget about it. You can’t get anything even remotely like it here. What makes a charcoal-broiled hot dog so special? Everybody in the country has hot dogs, but nobody has those charcoal grilled hot dogs like you get at TED’S HOT DOGS. What I love about charcoal cooked hot dogs in Buffalo is the abuse they get while they cook. They get slapped around, they get poked, all of that creates more surface area to create that crunchy, sometimesverging-on-burnt flavor that I think makes a hot dog so delicious.

Why Buffalo? The food in Buffalo is really one of my favorite subjects, because I’m all about finding unique regional specialties you can’t find anywhere else. And no city, except maybe New Orleans, has as many different ones as Buffalo. Where should every wing lover make sure to stop when visiting Buffalo? The ANCHOR BAR is basically a national shrine. It’s sort of a historical monument. But somehow, that didn’t go to its head. In general, that’s one of the things that makes me have such affection for wings in general and the Anchor Bar in particular. It is, and has always been, a place where anyone can feel comfortable and at home . You once described beef on weck as one of the greatest roast beef sandwiches in America. What do you think makes a beef on weck such an American classic? Nowhere is the formula so specific and so elevated as it is in Buffalo. Virtually every other place where roast beef sandwiches are a big deal, they will cut the roast beef in

The Anchor Bar is a national shrine. Y ou once called Buffalo a “confectionary gold mine.” What makes it so, and what makes sponge candy so unique? There are candies (elsewhere) that are vaguely similar, but nowhere is it as perfect and as fresh. I’ve never had sponge candy in Buffalo that didn’t have that impeccable freshness, both for the chocolate around it, and the sponge inside. It’s just so light and elegant and had that real fresh, crisp crunch to it when your teeth hit it after going through the chocolate. That experience of your teeth going through the outer shell of chocolate, and then hitting the sponge and crunching it, that’s one of the great candy eating experiences on earth. And nowhere is it as good as Buffalo because the sponge candy is such high quality and always so fresh. Why is Buffalo such an outstanding destination for regional foods? It’s artisan ingredients and artisan preparation at prices that a regular person can enjoy. I can’t think of another place where it is that common for the acceptable local specialties to be made with such skill and artistry.

Buffalo-Style Pizza Crawl Buffalo will always be known as the chicken wing town, but our own version of pizza is worthy of some praise. What makes a pizza “Buffalo” style? Generally, it includes a thicker crust (with the occasional air bubble), slightly sweet sauce, plenty of cheese and spicy pepperoni that’s been charred and has begun to “cup.” Buffalo Eats co-founder Donnie Burtless weighs in on some of the best spots for “Buffalo-style” pizza.

Bocce Pizza » In my opinion, there is no better example of “Buffalo-style” pizza than Bocce Pizza on Hopkins or Bailey. The fluffy crust, often with large air bubbles, is fantastic and the properly seasoned tomato sauce and generous amount of mozzarella always hits the spot. It’s messy, but in a good way, and the pepperoni has a nice spicy kick. bocceclubpizza.com Imperial Pizza » Imperial Pizza’s long cut slices use a generous amount of mozzarella, sweet sauce and spicy pepperoni. Imperial has built a cult-like following over the years and that popularity has led to some massive expansion plans for the little South Buffalo pizzeria. imperialpizzabuffalo.com Bob & John’s La Hacienda » Another renowned purveyor of Buffalo pizza, North Buffalo favorite Bob and John’s has been serving pies for nearly 45 years. Pro tip: try their all-you-can-eat lunch buffet on weekdays. Also, if you’d rather eat in a more pub-style atmosphere, you can also order their pizza and wings at The Wellington Pub next door. bobandjohns.com

Lovejoy Pizza » Plenty of pizzerias in Western New York can serve a really good slice of pizza but only a few can do it on a day-to-day basis. What makes Lovejoy Pizza such a great place isn’t the crust, cheese or pepperoni (although they are all excellent), but it’s their consistency. I go back to the pizzeria over and over again because their pie is always perfect (in both small and large sizes). lovejoypizza.com La Nova Pizza » You can’t talk about pizza in Buffalo and not talk about La Nova. La Nova is basically a household name when it comes to Buffalo-style pizza and for good reason: they’ve been around forever and the pizza is consistently good. While you’ll find the classics, they also offer one of the largest selections of Buffalo-style pizza by the slice at their West Ferry location. Sure, you can grab an excellent cheese and pepperoni slice, but I love the occasional steak and cheese with sesame seed crust. lanova-pizza.com Donnie Burtless is one of the co-founders of Buffaloeats.org, a leading food blog in the Queen City. His monthly round-ups of Buffalo's best restaurants appear on Visit Buffalo Niagara's blog.

ART

Charles Burchfield's Buffalo

Renowned American artist Charles Burchfield found inspiration in the urban streetscapes and natural vistas of Buffalo and Western New York. The largest collection of his work can be found in the

BURCHFIELD PENNEY ART CENTER, which also serves as Buffalo’s premier gallery for regional artists. Many of the settings for his paintings can still be seen today. A notable example is this gorgeous urban vista (Buildings and Street Scene, 1940, above left), looking up Washington Street from the corner of Mohawk in downtown Buffalo. burchfieldpenney.org

“ As we came out from the theatre, the brilliant daylight blinded us – the Electric Bldg. looked especially beautiful – its architecture is timeless; it will be considered beautiful when modernistic architecture will look hopelessly dated.” – Charles E. Burchfield, August 3, 1959

BUFFALO’S VIBRANT GARDEN SCENE IS AS UNEXPECTED AS IT GETS; prolific green thumbs occupy nearly every neighborhood and have been sowing the seeds of the city’s rebirth yard by yard. Over 400 homeowners open their yards to visitors on the last weekend of July for Garden Walk Buffalo, the largest selfguided garden tour in the United States. And that’s just the start; garden tours and events fill nearly every week of the summer. Here are a few favorites of local garden expert Jim Charlier. gardenwalkbuffalo.com

278 BAYNES STREET » Eight Paths garden “ It's a beauty of a garden - Asian, urban - and quite unexpected in its neighborhood. The unassuming front yard and home do not give up anything to this much-loved and well-tended space.”

755 WEST DELAVAN AVENUE The Guercio garden “ This is a perennial favorite on the Walk with visitors from around the globe stopping by year after year. Don’t miss the ginormous koi in the large backyard pond.”

604 BIRD AVENUE Gordon Ballard and Brian Olinski's garden “ The infamous tiki bar has seen lots of action over the years, but it’s not the only tropical thing you’ll find in this garden. It’s a lush jungle of winding paths, a pond, water features, sitting areas and unique plant collections.” All garden photos by Jim Charlier

The 1896 Dutch Colonial with matching shed has a lush grassless front garden, with a columnar apple tree. Out back, a hanging succulent garden faces a paver and grass checkerboard garden.”

SPORTSMEN'S TAVERN

From cozy neighborhood pubs to rollicking downtown venues, the city’s many after-dark offerings cap off the perfect day of exploring.

“ Music is literally everywhere, which makes stumbling into it easier than avoiding it,” says Michael Farrell about Buffalo’s eclectic music scene. Here’s Farrell’s hot take on the Queen City’s hottest music venues. Where are your favorite spots to see music in Buffalo and why? For visitors, it’s really about the kind of experience they’re looking for. Singer/ songwriter in a perfectly angelic setting? Asbury Hall. Canadian collective in an oddly located club? Walk upstairs to the Tralf. And to enjoy a touring name in a sweaty, multi- level rock hall? Hit up Town Ballroom. Just depends on what you’re into. Thankfully, Buffalo can accommodate all tastes – and within a few blocks of one another. What do you find most surprising/ unexpected about Buffalo’s music scene? That this city has a sneakily potent punk scene, and always has. Joints like Mohawk Place, Waiting Room and Tudor Lounge have taken the place of deceased locales like Showplace Theater and the Continental, but Buffalo’s genuine grit continues to make it a

great backdrop for both visiting and hometown power chords. What/where should any music lover make sure not to miss while they’re visiting? Two things: A Saturday morning trip to Record Theatre, followed by a late afternoon visit to Sportsmen’s Tavern for whatever rock, blues or alt country performers grace its stage. The former will allow visitors to stock up on new, rare and discount vinyl inside an audiophile’s paradise; and the latter will introduce travelers to one of the city’s most immersive venues, no matter who’s on stage. What are some of the best opportunities for free music throughout the year? Once warmer temps hit, locals and visitors alike can see live music for free, seven days or nights a week. It’s just a matter of finding it. Yes, there are more well-known events like Live at Larkin and Thursdays at Canalside,

but that’s just the start. Bidwell Parkway in Elmwood Village, River Fest Park in the Ward, and numerous other parks, neighborhoods and outdoor bars boast their own concert series. Where are some of the best hidden gems for live music that only locals know about? For those looking for a particularly Buffalo music experience, stop into Nietzsche’s for either its Saturday afternoon Irish seisiuns or nighttime lineup; pop into DBGB’s for an armful of craft beers and whatever DJ themed night is on tap; then end your night with a ride down Richmond Avenue to the Essex Street Pub. The bar still has the Goo Goo Dolls/Lance Diamond cover of the Rolling Stones’ Bitch on its juke, so that could tie the evening up very nicely. Michael Farrell is a contributor to The Buffalo News, former Boston Herald reporter and author of two novels.

BUFFALO IS AN UNDER-THE-RADAR OUTDOOR ADVENTURE MECCA. We’re located on one of the best fisheries in North America and home to a globally significant bird area. We hike along Class V rapids at Devil’s Hole State Park and mountain bike at Sprague Brook Park in the nearby Boston Hills. There’s kayaking in Elevator Alley, windsurfing at Gallagher Beach, sailing all summer long on Lake Erie and paddleboard yoga at Wilkeson Pointe. It’s no exaggeration to say there aren’t many places that provide this variety of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Here are five of the top spots to explore.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

ETERNAL FLAME

KC KRATT

NIAGARA FALLS STATE PARK In the presence of Niagara Falls, the phrase “the great outdoors” takes on an entirely different meaning, magnitude and resonance. Words often fail when trying to describe the emotions our local wonder of the world provokes. Nowadays, words like uncluttered, eco-friendly and unspoiled typically come to mind when visiting the refurbished Niagara Falls State Park. If you’re looking for the natural Niagara, this is the perfect place to start. niagarafallsstatepark.com Eternal Flame The rolling hills south of Buffalo feature one of the most unusual geological features found on any hiking trail in the United States. The Eternal Flame Trail at Chestnut Ridge County Park has captured locals’ imagination for generations. Hikers trek down a forested hill, then up a ravine dotted with tree roots and rocks before stumbling upon a flickering flame

found behind a small waterfall. The flame is fed by a natural gas source and occasionally is less than eternal; bring a lighter to re-ignite it just in case! erie.gov/parks/chestnut.asp NIAGARA GORGE The wonders of Western New York don’t stop at the brink of the Falls. Just downstream from the world’s most famous waterfall, you’ll find several miles of hiking trails at Devil’s Hole State Park and Whirlpool State Park that take you deep into the heart of the magnificent Niagara Gorge, far from the viewing platforms, souvenir stands and easily accessed attractions that command the typical visitor’s attention. It’s one of unexpected Buffalo’s best kept secrets. TIFFT NATURE PRESERVE If hills could talk, the landscape at Tifft would have quite a tale to tell. Over the course of the last 200

years, this piece of property on Buffalo’s waterfront has served as a dairy farm (run by one George Washington Tifft), a lake and rail trans-shipment center and at one time as the city dump. Today, this 264-acre site has been cleaned up and returned to productive use as a wildlife refuge run by the Buffalo Museum of Science. tifft.org ZOAR VALLEY Located in southernmost Erie County along the banks of Cattaraugus Creek, Zoar Valley is the kind of breathtaking spectacle you would expect to find in the wilds of the West. Cliffs plunge nearly 400 feet to the valley floor, making hiking along the canyon rim fraught with potential peril (proceed with caution!) but replete with views (and eagle sightings) sure to make your spirit soar. dec.ny.gov/lands/36931.html

A Travel Writer In Her Own

Backyard

 What helped attract you to Buffalo?

I found myself in a wave of millennials and young professionals who were moving to Buffalo. My husband and I just found a lot of energy here, a lot of excitement, a lot of beautiful old buildings and walkable neighborhoods taking on new life.  Where’s your favorite spot to hang out?

I love to rave about TIPICO COFFEE. It’s a place on the West Side. It has North America’s largest wood-fired stove, and it’s just beautifully designed. It’s like my second office. I think you’ll find all the creatives and movers and shakers of Buffalo passing through there at one time or another. W here are your favorite places to shop in

in Buffalo?

I’m super enthusiastic about HERTEL AVENUE. Hertel is the former little Italy of Buffalo and now is wonderfully diverse. There’s a great mix of hip new shops and old-school restaurants, and new restaurants and immigrant-owned establishments. It’s just really cool.  What most surprises you about Buffalo?

It’s a four season city. The winter season I think is something to really be embraced… My husband and I joined a curling league, which we did outdoors for two years in January. We’d all have a beer afterward and warm up. We have a lot to enjoy in every season.

 LYNN FREEHILL-MAYE has journeyed around

the world writing stories for The New York Times, The New Yorker, AFAR and other publications. But she’s found a home in Buffalo. We caught up with the Illinois native and freelance journalist, who moved to Buffalo with her husband in 2014, to uncover what she thinks sets Buffalo apart from all the other destinations she’s visited.

DREW BROWN

40 » VisitBuffaloNiagara.com

 How about your favorite cultural e xperiences here?

The ALBRIGHT-KNOX is just stunning. It’s astonishing to think that this museum that has a collection that rivals the Guggenheim’s is right here in Buffalo. The BURCHFIELD PENNEY has a more local focus and executes it in such a beautiful way. I remember specifically visiting Buffalo for the first time and pulling onto ELMWOOD AVENUE, and seeing a bike lane going past Buffalo State College and these museums on either side. I thought “Whoa, this is a really cool city. This has some things I really wasn’t expecting.”

 What are some of Buffalo’s best hidden gems and

well-kept secrets?

Walking onto the BIRD ISLAND PIER feels like walking on water. Here you can walk for a mile, two miles, into the sunset, water on both sides of you on this sort of narrow walkway. Everybody is out there enjoying it, in small enough numbers that it just feels very private and a really great place to get your bearings.  What are the can’t-miss spots in Buffalo?

If someone is a little more adventurous, I would send them to SILO CITY or one of the BUFFALO RIVER HISTORY TOURS, because Buffalo has the world’s most impressive collection of grain elevators. They’re really monumental. Architects compared them to our pyramids, this marriage of form and function. To see them all in one place along the Buffalo River, and to hear that history is really cool. After that I like to go to BALLYHOO. Ballyhoo is a great little treasure in that area, a favorite bar/restaurant of mine. You get a gourmet sausage and a SPECTACULAR ice cream sandwich. I think it’s the owner’s grandmother’s cookie recipe. They take these fresh cookies and put the ice cream in right there in the back. They’re a hit with everyone.  What do you find most appealing about the Queen City?

I think it has a lot of the edginess of the East Coast, but also the friendliness of the Midwest which I’m partial to. People are just really nice … I think that neighborliness is something people are searching for all over the country. So whether you live here or you’re visiting, I think you’ll definitely experience it. GRAIN ELEVATORS ALONG THE BUFFALO RIVER

Located 75 miles south of Buffalo, Chautauqua is both an extraordinarily intact 19th century village as well as a center for the arts, culture and lifelong learning – all in a lovely lakeside setting that offers guests access to swimming, boating and fishing. While the grounds are open year-round, Chautauqua really comes to life for nine weeks every summer between June and August. It’s during this time you’ll find a robust schedule of concerts, lectures, exhibits and performances of all kinds. Be sure to put this unique slice of Americana on your unexpected Buffalo itinerary. ciweb.org

Lucille Ball is the favorite daughter of this small city tucked into the rolling hills of the Southern Tier about 90 minutes south of Buffalo; murals of the legendary comedienne adorn the walls of several of its downtown buildings. Her legacy shines brightest at downtown Jamestown’s LUCY DESI MUSEUM, which is jam-packed with memorabilia, photos and stories from the star’s decadeslong career. The museum is complemented by DESILU STUDIOS next door, which recreates some of the most iconic sets from I Love Lucy’s six year run. It’s a must-see for television, comedy and pop culture aficionados. lucy-desi.com

Designed by Finnish architects Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Kleinhans Music Hall, home to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, is renowned for the curving lines of its exterior and the clean lines and careful craftsmanship of its interior. Cindy, Craig, Noah and Zachary were taking in Garden Walk Buffalo for the day, visiting from Pittsford, New York. “We actually were supposed to come with my parents and do a boat tour at Erie Basin Marina,” says Cindy, “then we heard about Garden Walk.” “We saw a decent amount of gardens,” adds Craig, “Summer Street was really neat, one of our favorites. We saw twenty or twenty-five gardens.” When asked if they would do Garden Walk again Cindy answers: “Yes, we had no idea the scope of it. We looked at the website this morning, it’s bigger than we thought. The docent on the bus told us that it’s the largest garden walk in the country.” After enjoying the views of Kleinhans Music Hall and Symphony Circle, the family headed off to Canalside to meet Cindy’s parents for dinner.
