Robot enhances overnight cleaning at NHS Fife

CONTRACTS

EARLY in 2017, NHS Fife’s Victoria Hospital became the first site in Scotland to deploy Diversey’s Taski Intellibot robotic floor cleaning machine. The initial aim of improving the cleaning results and efficiency of the overnight cleaning team was quickly achieved. Now, having used the robot for nine months, the site is uniquely positioned to reflect on its impact on cleaning routines. The ability to increase floor

PVC equipment collection adds real value for hospitals Every time someone goes into hospital for an operation or procedure, singleuse PVC items such as oxygen masks, anaesthetic masks and IV solution bags will often be part of their treatment. When it comes to disposal, these are invariably sent for incineration, alternative treatment facilities or, depending on the waste management company, to specialist landfill. Now, however, Grundon Waste Management is working with partners to deliver changes, saving the NHS money and helping to boost the circular economy. James Killick, compliance advisor at Grundon Waste Management, explains more. As experts in delivering healthcare waste management, we always strive to make it as simple as possible for our customers to recover, recycle and reprocess their waste. We work for a number of NHS Trusts

and understand the issues such as disposal and segregation of infectious and non-infectious waste and the potential problems with contamination. Recently, however, thanks to a partnership with circular

economy specialists Axion, we are helping hospitals to streamline collection of a new waste stream of items that would normally not be recycled. RecoMed is a PVC take-back scheme for single-use medical devices, the first such scheme in Europe. It is operated in partnership with the British Plastics Federation and funded by Vinyl Plus, the voluntary sustainable development programme of the European PVC industry. When Grundon was awarded the contract to handle waste management at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey, staff were already segregating items such as plastic tubing, oxygen masks, nasal cannulas, and anaesthetic masks for disposal via RecoMed. These went into internal pedal bins supplied free of charge by RecoMed, but storage was an issue and the process

SPONSORED FEATURE

was quite resource intensive for Axion, which had to arrange courier collections to transport the waste to the reprocessing facility. Our solution was to offer to collect the extra bins for free - we pick them up at the same time as our normal waste rounds and bring them back to our clinical waste facility at Knowl Hill in Berkshire for storage. There, we bulk the waste up and, when we have enough material, send it directly to RecoMed, where it is granulated and melted at high temperature ready for transformation into new items, such as tree ties. In the past 12 months, we’ve been able to collect approximately 1000kg of PVC waste for reprocessing, material which previously would have gone to our alternative treatment facilities for more costly disposal. If, for example, these single-use PVC items had become contaminated because they were disposed of alongside infectious waste, the cost of disposal could be as much as 15 times more than non-infectious waste. Given that the average UK hospital uses some 12,000 oxygen masks alone, you can see that savings can soon add up and this provides the perfect opportunity for hospitals to save on disposal costs. The RecoMed solution is also a much more environmentallyfriendly alternative and, because new products are produced from the waste material, it is a perfect example of the circular economy. As well as Frimley Park Hospital, we’re also working with a major hospital in Reading and hope to expand the scheme to our other NHS Trust customers. We know from experience that good waste management is always led from the top and we have some great examples of how this can really deliver results. We’d like to see more senior NHS managers and consultants engaged with this innovative solution and to be able to share with them the benefits of RecoMed. This is an easy system to adopt the single-use PVC items are usually

discarded by hospital staff as patients leave the recovery room to return to the ward, so by introducing one pedal bin by the exit of the recovery bay, disposal is easy and we simply collect the bins on our rounds. A further advantage is that by partnering with one total waste management supplier, such as Grundon, NHS Trusts can benefit from all services being under one umbrella. We advise on all types of waste compliance issues, ensuring customers are fully up-to-date with the latest rules and regulations, and we also offer a wide range of disposal options alongside training for hospital staff. New recycling signs, colour-coded bins, awareness days, and optimised collection schedules are just some of the

C&M

services we provide. By streamlining all the processes and keeping everything under one roof, Trusts can potentially save money and keep costs down. One point of contact makes it easy to manage and our flexible and innovative approach means we are always looking for new ideas to help our customers. RecoMed itself has won a host of awards, including the 2017 CIWM Sustainability and Resources Award for best recycling project, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer this innovative solution to our customers. HEALTHCARE & HOSPITAL HYGIENE

Hygiene in the A&E unit Accident and emergency units are under constant pressure to deliver the best possible care to patients while also keeping down waiting times. But a good hand hygiene regime should never be skimped. Tork manufacturer Essity looks at the types of washroom systems that can provide an effective balance between speed and hygiene in A&E. IT has been a difficult winter for A&E units. Severe flu outbreaks have occurred up and down the country, stretching accident and emergency departments almost to breaking point. Reports of patients in Scottish hospitals having to wait more than 12 hours hit the headlines at the beginning of the year. Soon after that it emerged that more than 60 accident and emergency unit chiefs had written to the Government with warnings about patients dying in corridors while waiting to be seen. It is a constant challenge for A&E departments to deal with large numbers of patients efficiently while maintaining a high level of care. And optimum hand hygiene on the part of staff is a major part of that care. It is generally accepted that medical staff should wash and dry their hands thoroughly between every patient interaction. Has anything really changed in 70 years? This year we celebrate 70 years of the NHS across the four nations, and maybe it is time to take a step back and ask ourselves if anything has changed over those 70 years? The Association of Healthcare Cleaning Professionals (AHCP) has been running since 1975 and, for over 40 years, it has worked to raise standards and embrace new cleaning technologies. Cleanliness in the healthcare environment is even more important now than it was on 5 July 1948 when the NHS was formed. But, asks the AHCP, what has changed? MONUMENTAL CLEANING.

The World’s Number One Pressure Washer Brand. As part of its cultural sponsorship programme, Kärcher cleaned one of the capital’s most striking monuments: The London Eye. For this monumental clean, hot water pressure washers were used to remove a layer of stubborn dirt and grease from the 135m high structure, bringing it back to its original splendour. For decades, our pressure washers have been helping our customers to clean their vehicles, buildings, tools and equipment – as well as some more unconventional objects and places. Innovation remains at the heart of what we do and we’ve been continuously refining our pressure washers for years to deliver increased performance, less consumption, longer service life and shorter cleaning times. With a range of different options including cold and hot water units powered by electricity or combustion engine, mobile or stationary, there’s a Kärcher pressure washer to suit virtually every cleaning task, no matter how impossible it may seem. To learn more about Kärcher’s iconic monument cleans visit www.karcher.co.uk/monumental. MANCHESTER CLEANING SHOW 2018 - SHOW GUIDE

WELCOME Vanessa Van Santen-Smith

Stan Atkins Chairman British Cleaning Council

Sales Director Quartz Business Media

Welcome to our second ever Manchester Cleaning Show, which is co-produced by the British Cleaning Council and our partners Quartz Business Media. For those who joined us for the first Manchester event two years ago, as an exhibitor or as a visitor, can I firstly say a massive ‘thank you’, as without your support we wouldn’t be back here again. And if this is your first visit to the Manchester show I’m confident that you’ll not only have a great time, you’ll also get a real feel for the opportunities and challenges which lay ahead for all of us in the sector. In fact the future of cleaning is very much at the heart of this year’s Manchester Cleaning Show, and many of the presentations we’ve helped to put together with Quartz reflects this theme. Also high on the agenda for the British Cleaning Council, and many of our members and industry partners, are issues such as health and safety, fairer procurement practices and the impending employment gap. Addressing this gap is also what drives many current BCC campaigns and initiatives. Skills and training, attracting more young people into the profession and improving the overall image of cleaning are all priority areas for us, as is the continuous raising of professional standards. But in addition to debating and discussing serious matters, the Manchester Cleaning Show is also a fantastic platform for the whole industry to celebrate successes and showcase the very best in commercial and professional cleaning. We’ve major brands, employers and specialist suppliers drawn from across the whole supply chain exhibiting, and all their latest products and innovations will be on display for you to try out. We welcome once again the popular window cleaning challenge, where anyone who fancies a go has the chance to walk away with £250, and we have lots of exhibitors with interactive stands, games and gadgets to entertain you. Of course, the BCC itself has a stand, and many of our members are also represented across the exhibition hall. So, to find out more about our work, and the work of our partners, please do drop by for a chat. We’ll also be tweeting regularly throughout the two days (@BritishCleaning), and if you follow us you’ll be able to see all our updates and show news. I wish you all a fantastic Manchester Cleaning Show and I look forward to you joining us for what is rapidly becoming a firm fixture in the national cleaning industry calendar.

On behalf of the exhibitors and Quartz Business Media, I am delighted to welcome you to the second Manchester Cleaning Show, the sister event to the highly successful Cleaning Show staged every two years in London. Following a very successful launch in 2016, I am delighted that this year’s event has received such strong support from the industry, ensuring that it will be a valuable showcase for the most important cleaning industry innovations impacting the UK market this year. On all stands, exhibitors will be demonstrating the very latest products, systems and services, providing you with the best opportunity to discuss your requirements and challenges with suppliers and manufacturers from all sectors of the industry. The excellent facilities of Event City - and representatives from Quartz Business Media are at your disposal. I trust you will find your visit rewarding, profitable and enjoyable. Again, a very warm welcome to the show - I encourage you to make the most of the exhibition and our free, first-class seminar programme.

Cleaning and Hygiene - a 2020 vision WEDNESDAY 11 APRIL 2018 The British Cleaning Council – leading the industry towards a prosperous future 10:00 Welcome to the Manchester Cleaning Show Stan Atkins, chairman of the British Cleaning Council

10:15 The British Cleaning Council’s Research Report – Preparing for the Future By Gwenn Winters, director of research and data management, Firedog. FireDog Research is an insight agency that supports government, trade associations and employers seeking to understand challenges and predict future trends relating to employment and skills development. During this presentation it will present the key findings of the research it conducted for the British Cleaning Council in 2017. It will identify where the sector is likely to grow in the future, how employers can better focus their training budget spending, where providers should concentrate on developing new interventions, and how policy makers can support the industry’s efforts to enhance productivity. Lots of takeaways, insight and analysis stemming from this detailed market research report.

Biography: Gwenn Winters is a senior researcher with experience of delivering insight, analysis and consultancy services to a range of public and private sector clients. Gwenn has designed and delivered large-scale research projects and undertaken research and evaluation of several publicly funded projects in the fields of skills, employment and welfare reform. She headed the research team in the SSC network prior to joining FireDog Research. She was a key member of the SSC Labour Market Data Group, working across the nations to ensure access to robust and timely data sets. She is also a PRINCE2 practitioner.

By Dr Stephen Bloye, chairman of the British Association of Cleaning in Higher Education (BACHE)and acting director of facilities at Manchester Metropolitan University, and Hamish Moore, chief executive of Wellbeing Works. 34 APRIL 2018

‘Psychological Safety’ -the missing link to productivity in the cleaning sector. This presentation will consider how creating a thriving work environment can radically alter productivity and cost, and will include a detailed case example from FM at Manchester Met.

Biographies: Stephen Bloye has worked in the higher education sector for 30 years at a number of universities, running commercial and support operations. Stephen is currently the director of facilities at Manchester Metropolitan University and chief executive of the British Association of Cleaning in Higher Education (BACHE). Hamish Moore is chief executive of Wellbeing Works. He is a leading authority on psychological safety and wellbeing at work and passionate about creating ‘thriving’ workplaces which raises productivity and reduces absence and costs. Hamish Moore has advised many large organisations on introducing psychological safety and wellbeing programmes that lead to significant benefits to staff and to their employers. During this presentation he will highlight some practical key steps that produce measurable results and illustrate these with reference to a successful initiative he led in the FM department at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2017.

11.15 Creating a career in cleaning By Denise Hanson, FBICSc. From cleaning operative to manager: This presentation will look at the progression route for cleaning operatives to reach management level within the cleaning industry.

Biography: Denise has worked in the cleaning industry since 1982, initially in the hotel sector as a trainee housekeeper. Roles since then have covered local government, contract cleaning, chemical and equipment sales, and specialist training and consultancy - all with a cleaning bias. Denise was a member of the council for the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) for many years and later served as national chairman until early 2017 when she joined the organisation as its technical manager.

11.45 Removing the risk from window cleaning. By Scott Smith, managing director, Smith Services Ltd, and Steve Kennedy, managing director, Perfect Shine Ltd. This presentation will explain how training certification for cleaning operatives produces wide reaching benefits for building owners, facility managers, cleaning contractors, subcontractors, and cleaning operatives. It will reference the FWC Safety Accredited Member scheme (SAM) which is a procurement scheme based around formal training for the operatives carrying out the work. It will demonstrate how such a scheme can help building managers and facility managers satisfy their legal obligations regarding safety, whilst improving quality and value for money. It will also look at how it can enable cleaning contractors to grow their business by empowering and engaging the operatives who carry out the practical work.

Biographies: Scott Smith has 35 years’ experience in window cleaning including 23 years in rope access, 15 of which as an IRATA level 3 operative. He also holds a NEBOSH ‘Health & Safety’ certificate. Prior to taking over Smith Services, Scott developed a wealth of commercial experience managing the high level cleaning division of a major UK company. Steve Kennedy has 25 years’ experience in commercial window cleaning. His company’s client base includes oil and gas companies and other high-profile sites. His company is the preferred contractor for The National Trust for Scotland. In 2013 it became the first employer with more than five staff to require IOSH CWS certification for all window cleaning operatives.

12.15 Redefining entry level jobs - how the cleaning industry can lead post-Brexit. By Tobias Batkin, managing director, Bespoke Cleaning Solutions – representing the CSSA. Brexit will change the way cleaning companies employ people. Since the Brexit vote in June 2017, there has been a reduction in the numbers of people emigrating to the UK looking for work. Bespoke believes this trend will continue in the short to medium term. It also believes this will present a once in a lifetime opportunity for the cleaning industry to redefine what an entry level job is and flip public perceptions of the cleaning industry on their head. By engaging with under-employed groups in society Bespoke believes the industry can transform cleaning jobs into gateway employment opportunities.

Biography: Tobias Batkin started Bespoke from his parents’ kitchen, with the aim of redefining what a cleaning company could be. His innovative service delivery model and approach to industry practise has seen Bespoke grow into one of London’s pre-eminent service providers. In 2017 Bespoke was selected for Goldman Sach’s trans-Atlantic programme for high growth businesses.

Session: Future-ready workshops 13.30 The facilities sector in post-Brexit Britain. By Dominic Ponniah, CEO and co-founder of Cleanology. This presentation will include a brief summary of the Brexit story so far, and take a more detailed look at some of the reasons for Brexit to put into context the likely outcomes. Dominic will take a practical look at what companies are doing to prepare for Brexit and what contingency plans are being put in place, both from a contractor and end-user perspective. And in conclusion, he will consider the likely impact on the FM industry and how it will not be business as usual post-Brexit. What is certain is that the uncertainty surrounding Brexit is going to keep everyone guessing and debating for many more months to come!

Biography: Dominic graduated from the London School of Economics and founded a number of businesses, including the high-profile TucTuc in Brighton, Europe’s first motorised rickshaw service. He co-founded Cleanology with his mother in 1999 and today employs around 500 people across London and Manchester. In the world of politics, he was a parliamentary candidate in the 2005 general election in Leeds East and has worked with a number of parliamentarians, including ex-PM David Cameron. He has appeared on almost every media outlet, including BBC Radio 4, Dragons Den and CNN.

14.00 Is your recruitment strategy fit for purpose? By Keith Baker, CEO and founder, CERATA Ltd. Far from being a reactive process, recruitment should be a planned approach to your overall business strategy. As with all things in business, effective planning to get the ‘right people in the right seats and on the right bus’ (Jim Collins, From Good to Great 2001) should apply to recruitment. This presentation will look at the principles which CERATA Ltd uses to support companies in being proactive recruiters. Using practical examples to support its proposition, this session is for all who are interested in recruiting and retaining high caliber personnel.

Biography: Having been involved in the industry since 1970, working with multi-national companies, owning his own business and leading an international industry trade association, Keith is now concentrating on helping to recruit high caliber executives within the cleaning industry and, hopefully, in some small way, helping to change the way the world views cleaning.

14.30 Increasing efficiencies in your business - how to respond to opportunities and challenges with efficiency to maximise profits. By Paul Ridden, MD, Smart Task. During this session Paul Ridden will explore how cleaning contractors can take control of their businesses whilst reducing

paperwork and administrative overheads, by implementing a cloud based software tool to manage contracts, record time and attendance, calculate payroll and simplify billing. He will also explore how these tools can provide a platform to differentiate services provided to clients, strengthen propositions and help achieve more contract wins.

Biography: Paul Ridden has extensive experience leading a business that uses low cost technology to deliver real business value to its customers. By engaging his team to work closely with a range of cleaning service providers, SmartTask has become a leading tool to help businesses operate more effectively and win more cleaning contracts.

15.00 If banking can create digital contracts why can’t you? By Sarah Fox, international speaker, author and contract strategist. Most companies use contracts to safeguard their rights and to enforce remedies when projects go wrong. However, this ignores the role of contracts in building trust and avoiding disputes, which are critical for project success. The digital revolution requires companies to change both their technological approach and mindset to embrace newer forms of contracting, and reduce the burden of paperwork on their business.

Biography: Sarah Fox focuses on helping companies in the construction industry to write simpler contracts, so they can build trusting relationships and avoid disputes. Over a coffee at Euston she decided to create a series of robust and workable contracts in just 500 words to prove just how simple and effective contracts could be. Sarah has written two books on ‘How to Write Simple and Effective Contracts in Just 500 Words’. She wants businesses to use contracts as tools to manage relationships not merely to safeguard rights.

10.45 Musculoskeletal risk assessment and debate. By Christopher Quarrie BSc, CIEHF, Health & Safety Executive. This presentation will outline the latest developments at the Health and Safety Executive and Laboratory on the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The presentation will detail amendments to the Manual Handling Operations Regulations and the various risk assessment tools that have been developed to assist in assessing MSD risk in the workplace. However, at the end of the presentation, the speaker would like the audience to consider the manual handling tasks that they or their employees undertake that pose the greatest risk of MSD and what has been done to minimise the risk. The speaker will then open a debate to share best practice - thinking caps on!

Biography: A specialist inspector in human factors and ergonomics at the Health and Safety Executive, Chris has specialised in the topic of MSDs for over 13 years. Chris has assisted in the development of risk assessment tools, undertaken site inspections and provided regulatory support in relation to MSDs as well as providing expert advice on control measures for the prevention of workplace MSDs.

of long reach poles. The project process, data and results will be presented together with the resulting best practice guidelines from this industry-driven project that used world leading wearable technology to gain a unique understanding of the musculoskeletal risks presented by the use of long reach poles. This is a story of how companies can collaborate to achieve best practice for all workers in a particular job or using a particular piece of equipment, and uncovers how objective data can be used to build an evidence base that allows a new industry standard of best practice to be defined with confidence, and endorsement from the HSE.

11.45 Occupational respiratory health in cleaning. By Dr. Amy Gyte, senior health exposures scientist, Health and Safety Executive. Research has shown an association between exposure to cleaning products and respiratory symptoms, including asthma. HSE research has aimed to better understand the UK cleaning industry and the evidence for occupational asthma and respiratory symptoms in relation to professional cleaning and the use of cleaning products, drawing from published studies and industry sources. In its research it has been focusing on the use of environmental disinfectants in healthcare settings by cleaning operatives and nurses. It has also been looking at the transfer of safety and hazard information down the supply chain to the end users. It has established a steering group of stakeholders from across the healthcare sector, with the aim to better understand how environmental disinfectants are used and the potential for respiratory exposure. The HSE aims to identify best practice to minimise exposure and raise the profile of respiratory occupational health across healthcare cleaning.

pharmaceutical industry for 10 years. Amy is currently working on a HSE project looking at the occupational respiratory health of professional cleaners.

Slips, trips and falls are one of the most common causes of injury and law suits in the UK. SlipStop is a pioneering new product from Arrow County Supplies - a contained unit that acts as both a warning and water collection system in one. The bright yellow unit is eye catching and promotes a message of safety, while the funnel at the top channels the water into the bucket located below. SlipStop simplifies the process of

A3 Machines specialises in industrial, commercial and municipal floor cleaning machines and equipment. It sells and hires reconditioned floor cleaning machines including vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers and floor polishers, scrubber driers, and carpet cleaners. A3 Machines is committed to providing its customers with the best equipment to carry out the most thorough clean and a key component of this offer is a power source that ensures a maintenance-free and continuous operation. To achieve this, the company works with independent UK battery specialist, DBS Leoch, to source the latest battery technology for its machines. A3 Machines uses AGM (absorbent glass mat) technology from DBS, predominantly the AGM 100 and AGM 150 models. These are deep cycle batteries with a particular focus on powering cleaning and maintenance equipment such as A3 Machines’ range of battery operated scrubber dryers. The AGM batteries offer up to 600 cycles, are sealed and maintenance-free, non-spillable with no need to fill, and deliver four times the cycles of traditional

performance, productivity and resourceutilisation of commercial dishwashing operations in food service operations in real-time. The real-time remote diagnostic, reporting and management capabilities of IntelliDish help food service operators to

It utilises advanced ‘smart’ technology to track and report accurate dishwashing information. Working in conjunction with Diversey’s Revoflow dispensing system it communicates various aspects of a dishwashing machine’s cycle (including pre-wash, wash, and rinse temperatures, product usage and concentrations) to a cloud-based server.
