ABOUT THE LAMP It must have been t he sixt ies w hen I f irst f amiliarised myself w it h f ilm, predominant ly w it h t he t echnology behind it . In t he village where I lived, right at t he German border, t he cinema was called ‘Hot el Indust rie’. Besides news broadcast s and movies of which I do not remember anyt hing, t he cinema host ed dance evenings and sport s demonst rat ions. Right t here, my lit t le brot her ef fort lessly fl oored world judo champion Ant on Geesink. In 1963, t he building was t emporarily vacat ed, and we boys could easily explore t he spaces. Through a dit ch and a t unnel int o t he building, we could ent er t he screening room. There was a project ion cabin in t he back t hat we weren’t usually allowed t o ent er. A layer of dust covered t wo Philips project ors; impressive grey machines w it h light s, lenses and w heels. My love for t echnology w as born t here. It t ook me some more t ime t o f ind my love f or cinema. It wasn’t unt il one day I drove back and f ort h t o my parent s’ house t o record Kings of t he Road. The West Deut sche Rundf unk, which broadcast ed Wim Wenders’ f ilm, could only be received in t he East of t he count ry. It must have been 1975 . The st ory is about a repairman of project ors w ho t ours along t he Polish-German border on a t ruck, w it nessing t he dow nf all of movie t heat res. Nowadays, we’re seeing an increase in screening rooms, but unfort unat ely t he magical grey machines wit h reels, sprocket s, carbon lamps and t ransparent fi lm will most probably be forever in t he past . During my st udies in Indust rial Design in Delf t , f ilm kept pulling me, as a result of which I lost myself t o t he int angible medium. I have been working as an edit or and direct or f or nearly f ort y years of my lif e, only t o ret urn t o designing t wo years ago. To me, f ilm is STILL MOVING.
