Franken vs. Coleman and the Decline and Fall of Civilized Politics Wy Spano and Nona Yates

Item # 149769 AP ISBN-13: 978-0-7603-3902-2 $27.00 US £20.00 UK $30.00 CAN 6.25 x 9.25 in 159 x 235 mm 288 pages, HC 26 color & 6 b/w photos All rights available Political Science/Political Process/ Elections Ct. Qty. 22

The highly colorful and controversial story behind the historic U.S. Senate showdown. ÎÎ Author is among the most prominent names in Minnesota political coverage, and co-author was a member of two Pulitzer Prize—winning reporting teams. ÎÎ Entertaining, lively, humorous, and even dramatic, it exemplifies a trend of ridiculously close races in modern American politics. ÎÎ Covers a large part of what will arguably go down as the most interesting and controversial election season in recent U.S. history.

Wy Spano is co-author of Minnesota Politics and Government, the only definitive book about Minnesota politics in the past forty years. www.d.umn. edu/~map1www/Wy.shtml Nona Yates is an awardwinning investigative researcher with more than twenty years of experience at the LA Times, including the National Political desk, special investigations, and local news.

The Franken-Coleman campaign saga really begins with the tragic plane crash resulting in the death of Senator Paul Wellstone. That moment provided Norm Coleman his second opportunity for major political reinvention (the first being when he switched parties). Following the tragedy, Coleman shifted gears to run a kinder, gentler series of television ads that hardly mentioned his new opponent, Walter Mondale. Meanwhile, when Republicans accused Democrats of turning the Wellstone memorial service into a carefully choreographed political rally, Franken was outraged. He immediately set upon a mission to unseat Coleman, which ended up with their eventual head-to-head run in 2008. The unprecedented recount and legal drama that ultimately decided the election was an appropriate coda to what had already been an extraordinary Minnesota Senate race. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Senate tells the whole story.

A Forward Air Controller in Vietnam Mike Jackson and Tara Dixon-Engel, Foreword by Frank Borman

Item # 149778 AP ISBN-13: 978-0-7603-3916-9 $17.99 US £14.99 UK $19.99 CAN 6 x 9 in 152 x 229 mm 304 pages, PB 34 color & 14 b/w photos All rights available History/Military/Vietnam War Ct. Qty. 26

Darkly humorous and full of action, author Mike Jackson takes you on a flight over Vietnam that you will never forget. ÎÎ Author Mike Jackson is very active in veterans’ activities; he is president of the American Veterans Institute. ÎÎ FACs (forward air controllers) like Jackson were beloved by the “grunts” in Vietnam. ÎÎ Jackson’s chronicle covers combat in the key territory of I Corps and along the DMZ.

Lieutenant Colonel Mike Jackson retired from the Air Force in 1991 following 23 years active duty. He was executive director of the National Aviation Hall of Fame at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. He and coauthor Tara DixonEngel are founders of the American Veterans Institute and live near Dayton.

FACs (forward air controllers) in Vietnam flew low and slow, searching for signs of an elusive enemy. Often they trolled themselves as bait for the NVA troops to try to shoot down. When a friendly unit made contact, having a FAC overhead made their day, because the FACs controlled the bomb-, rocket-, and napalm-laden fast movers, fighter jets, and attack aircraft whose ordnance often made the difference between life and death. They were regarded by many of their air force and naval aviator brethren as insane, suicidal, or both. In addition to the perils of enemy fire which ranged from lucky AK-47 shots to .51 caliber machine guns and SA-7 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, they had to watch out to keep from being blown up in a B-52 Arc-Light strike or knocked down by friendly artillery.

The heavily illustrated wartime exploits of the men who served under “Old Blood and Guts.” ÎÎ General George S. Patton Jr. is the preminent American military figure of the 20th century. ÎÎ The U.S. Third Army is the best known of all American army-sized units. ÎÎ The western front in World War II is the most popular.

Michael Green is a writer, researcher, and photographer with more than ninety books and numerous articles to his credit. James D. Brown served twenty years in the U.S. Army as an armor officer. As part of activeduty he was an assistant professor of engineering at the U.S. Military Academy.

Patton was champing at the bit to lead the D-Day invasion, but Eisenhower placed him in command of a decoy unit, the First U.S. Army Group. Nearly seven weeks after D-Day, Patton finally got his chance to take Third Army into battle. He began a ten-month rampage across France, driving through Germany and into Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and Austria. Along the way Third Army forces entered the Battle of the Bulge, breaking the siege of Bastogne. It was a turning point in the war, and afterward the Third Army pushed eastward again. Patton’s Third Army in World War II covers Patton’s command of Third Army with a focus on the armor. It was a new style of fighting, avoiding entrenched infantry warfare by continuously pushing forward, and it appealed to Patton’s hard-charging personality. Archival photos along with frequent quotes complete the portrait of Patton as well as his men as they fight their way across the Third Reich.

This beautiful coffee table book is a tribute to the veterans of the home front who helped build these amazing fighters and bombers. ÎÎ Documents the production of the now-famous aircraft of World War II. ÎÎ Highlights the contribution of American women to the war effort. ÎÎ First time in paperback.

Bill Yenne has written more than two dozen books and regularly contributes to International Air Power Review. Yenne was a contributor and aviation consultant to the Simon & Schuster D-Day Encyclopedia and worked on a book with legendary U.S. Air Force General Curtis E. LeMay. Yenne lives in San Francisco.

Few industrial phenomena have been as dramatic as the United States’ mid-20th-century shift from peacetime to wartime production. The American Aircraft Factory in World War II documents the production of legendary warbirds by companies like Boeing, North American, Curtiss, Consolidated, Douglas, Grumman, and Lockheed. It was a production unmatched by any other country and a crucial part of why the allies won the war. Author Bill Yenne considers the prewar governmental acts that got the plants rolling, as well as the gender shift that occurred as women entered the work force like never before. He also describes the construction of megafactories like Willow Run, factory design considerations, and the postwar conversion back to peacetime production. Illustrated with 175 period photographs—including 50 rare color photos never before seen in print.

American paratroopers against the Taliban in one of the biggest and bloodiest battles of the war. ÎÎ By author of Ghost Plane. ÎÎ Author is a veteran, wellconnected journalist whose work appears in the New York Times and Newsweek. ÎÎ Public interest in the War in Afghanistan is high and will only get higher with the increased emphasis of the Obama administration on fighting al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Stephen Grey is a Londonbased journalist known for breaking the story of the CIA’s secret rendition program for which he won the 2005 Amnesty International Media Award. He is a former editor of the Sunday Times and contributes there and at the New York Times, Guardian, Times, Independent, and Newsweek.

Into the Viper’s Nest recounts the dramatic three-day battle for the Taliban stronghold of Musa Qala that started on 7 December 2007. With a pre-battle population of fifteen to twenty thousand, Musa Qala was the only significant town held by the Taliban at that time. Attacking against two thousand Taliban fighters, who were heavily dug in after occupying the town for more than nine months, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was spearheaded by Task Force 1 Fury: 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, of the 82nd Airborne Division. For the ISAF, Musa Qala was a target of immense importance; the Taliban had to be driven out and the town secured. With months of occupation to get ready, the Taliban were prepared to stand and fight. What resulted was one of the biggest and most terrible battles of the war.

A Political History of the Bomb and Its Proliferation Thomas C. Reed and Danny B. Stillman

An authoritative history of what may be the most serious issues in global security. ÎÎ First time in paperback. ÎÎ The authors are experts in the field of nuclear weapons technology and policy. ÎÎ From July 1945’s “Trinity” A-bomb test to the nuclear blackmail perpetrated by North Korea and Iran: how we got here and where we’re going.

Thomas C. Reed was formerly the Secretary of the Air Force under Ford and Carter and Special Assistant to President Reagan for National Security Policy. Danny B. Stillman is a physicist. For thirteen years Stillman directed the Los Alamos Technical Intelligence Division and was awarded the Intelligence Community Seal Medallion.

This is a political history of nuclear weapons from the discovery of fission in 1938 to the nuclear train wreck that seems to loom in our future. It is an account of where those weapons came from, how the technology surprisingly and covertly spread, and who is likely to acquire those weapons next and most importantly why. The authors’ examination of post Cold War national and geopolitical issues regarding nuclear proliferation and the effects of Chinese sponsorship of the Pakistani program is eye opening. The reckless “nuclear weapons programs for sale” exporting of technology by Pakistan is truly chilling, as is the on-again off-again North Korean nuclear weapons program.

Heinrich Himmler’s stranger-than-fiction Nazi cult. ÎÎ The SS (Shutzstaffel) is one of the perpetually bestselling subjects in military history. ÎÎ This is the first book to focus on the mystical, metaphysical underpinnings of the SS. ÎÎ Details a virtually unknown 1939 SS archaelogical expedition to Tibet in search of Aryan roots in Tibetan culture.

Bill Yenne is the San Francisco-based author of more than four dozen books on military and historical topics. He is also a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

At the heart of the evil of Nazism was Hitler’s “witch doctor,” Heinrich Himmler, and his peculiar and deadly organization with the mundane name Schutzstaffel, literally “protective squadron.” Undoubtedly you know them better as the feared SS, the very essence of Nazism. Their threatening double lightning bolt is perhaps the most dreaded symbol of the Third Reich. The facts of the SS’s origins are truly stranger than fiction. If you thought Raiders of the Lost Ark was an inspired Hollywood fiction, think again. Hitler’s Master of the Dark Arts reveals the hidden “truths” of the SS in full and morbidly fascinating detail.

ÎÎ The 82nd was America’s first airborne division to go into combat and is the only American parachute division still active. ÎÎ Full photographic history of the 82nd in World War II, from Italy to France to Germany and all points in between.

Phil Nordyke was elected official historian of the 505th Regimental Combat Team in 2003. He is the author of two other WWII books including All American, All the Way: The Combat History of the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II. He lives in McKinney, Texas, with his wife Nancy.

Hailing from the big cities and small towns of America, these young men came together to serve their country and the greater good. They were the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division (the All Americans). Phil Nordyke, their official historian, draws on interviews with surviving veterans and oral history recordings as well as official archives and unpublished written accounts from more than three hundred veterans of the 505th PIR and their supporting units. This is history as it was lived by the men of the 505th, from their prewar coming of age in the regiment, through the end of World War II, when they marched in the Victory Parade up Fifth Avenue in New York, to the postwar legacy of having been part of an elite parachute regiment with a record unsurpassed in the annals of combat.

The German Wars

A Concise History, 1866-1945 Michael A. Palmer

Item # 149592 AP ISBN-13: 978-0-7603-3780-6 $29.00 US £20.00 UK $32.00 CAN 5.75 x 8.75 in 146 x 222 mm 272 pages, HC 16 b/w photos All rights available History/Modern/General Ct. Qty. 14

The German way of War from the FrancoPrussian War through World War II. ÎÎ Ties together the threads of German military aggression. ÎÎ Covers all German Wars from 1866 through World War II. ÎÎ Author is a highly respected military historian.

Award-winning author, Michael A. Palmer, Ph.D., is chair of the history department at East Carolina University. Formerly he worked at the Naval Historical Center and was a field historian during the Persian Gulf War. During Operation Desert Shield he worked for the Pentagon’s Chief of Naval Operations’ Strategic Concepts Group.

The German Wars: A Concise History, 1866-1945 outlines the history of European warfare from the Wars of German Unification to the end of the World War II. The title aside, the book is not another history of the German military; it takes a much broader approach looking at political, social, economic, and military developments across Europe, and the United States during the period. The “German War” part of the title is there because Germany plays the central part in the story. However the key element threading its way through this volume is the Industrial Revolution.
