America’s most famous World War II general as seen by the men who opposed him on the battlefield. ÎÎ General George S. Patton Jr. is the best-known and most highly respected American commander of World War II. ÎÎ Features commentary of German generals who faced Patton in battle. ÎÎ Covers Patton’s combat service starting in World War I and also includes discussion of the key “between the wars” years.

Harry Yeide (Hyattsville, MD) has been a national security affairs analyst for the federal government for twenty-seven years. He received a BA degree in political science and German from Muhlenberg College in 1982 and an MA in international affairs from the George Washington University in 1984. In his position with the federal government he has worked as a political, terrorism, and economic analyst on the Soviet Bloc, the Balkans, the Aegean, East Asia, South Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and he has served in numerous assignments overseas. He is the author of a number of works of military history, including The Longest Battle and First to the Rhine.

“Seeing the battle through the opponent’s eyes is the most dramatic way of seeing it. It is different in one important respect from looking at it through the opposite end of the telescope. For instead of being minimized, the picture is magnified with startling vividness.” —B. H. Liddell Hart (famed British military historian)

Many books have been written about Gen. George S. Patton Jr. This is the book that hasn’t: this is General George S. Patton Jr. as seen through the eyes of his enemies, the opposing German commanders. The thrust of this book is the enemy’s perspective on Patton, America’s most famous and highly respected commander of World War II, and his battles.

The crewmembers of the Franklin fight for their lives aboard a carrier on fire and within striking distance of Japan. ÎÎ The story of the Franklin is one of the most dramatic in naval history. ÎÎ Books like In Harm’s Way, about the loss of the USS Indianapolis, show a strong market for this kind of sea story. ÎÎ Comprehensive research answers the lingering questions about the event.

Joseph A. Springer (Pleasant Hill, Il) retired from the United States Air Force after twenty-two years as an Aircraft Weapons Specialist. He now specializes in military oral history, having interviewed more than one thousand combat veterans over the last thirty-five years. Joe’s first book, Black Devil Brigade, tells the oral history of the First Special Service Force in World War II. Joe and his wife, Susan, reside in West Central Illinois.

Known throughout the fleet as “Big Ben,” the USS Franklin was christened for the legacy of the four prior U.S. Navy ships named after Benjamin Franklin. The Franklin was one of twenty-four Essex-class fast carriers built during World War II, forming the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s war against Japan. On March 19, 1945, during a planned aircraft launch against Honshu, the Japanese mainland, the Franklin was struck by a 250kg bomb from an enemy aircraft, setting off a chain reaction of exploding ordnance and aviation fuel. The aircraft carrier, now on fire, listing heavily to starboard, and with over one thousand casualties, appeared to be mortally wounded. Inferno tells the heroic tale of the efforts that saved “Big Ben.” It is a tremendous story of endurance and seamanship told in harrowing detail in the survivors’ own words. Inferno makes for a gripping read.

The Photographic History of an American Triumph John R. Bruning

One of America’s greatest battles—and victories— in a remarkable photographic history. ÎÎ The Battle of the Bulge is one of the iconic battles of military history in general and American military history in particular. ÎÎ The triumph of American arms against the vaunted Nazi war machine’s desperate “all in” attack significantly shortened World War II in Europe and saved most of Western Europe from the Soviets; we met at the Elbe, not the Rhine. ÎÎ Like Gettysburg and Iwo Jima, the Bulge continues to capture the imagination of armchair historians who are fascinated by the sheer scale of destruction— almost as many American soldiers were killed in action during the thirty-nine days of the Bulge as were killed in all eighty days of the D-Day and ensuing Normandy campaigns.

Second only to D-Day, the invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge is the most famous and significant battle fought by American forces in Europe in World War II. The Bulge was a last-ditch, desperate gamble by Hitler in December 1944 that caught the Western Allies by surprise. Only the willingness of Americans to stand and die prevented the German breakthrough that might have prolonged the war and allowed the Soviet Red Army to seize even more of central Europe. The thirty-nine day battle involved nearly a million men from both sides and resulted in nineteen thousand American casulties—almost as many as in the eighty days of fighting in the D-Day invasion and Normandy hedgerows. An iconic battle that helped define the U.S. soldier of the era, the Bulge continues to capture the imaginations of armchair historians who are fascinated by the scale of destruction and “what-ifs” of the campaign.

Untold stories from the last of the surviving veterans. ÎÎ The Battle of the Bulge is one of the most important series of battles of World War II. ÎÎ Includes material from interviews with German army veterans, including SS soldiers, of the Battle of the Bulge. ÎÎ Ties in with documentary film Voices of the Bulge.

Michael Collins is a Public Historian who has been a historical interpreter and museum staffer for the New England Air Museum, the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum, the Irish American Heritage Museum, and the New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center among others. He lives in Hartford, CT. Martin King is a British Military Historian/ Lecturer who has guided many allied veterans and interviewed both German veterans and civilian witnesses in and around the WWII battlefields. He lives in Belgium where he researches and lectures on ETO battles as a consultant for the History Channel.

The powerful German counteroffensive operation code-named “Wacht am Rhein” (Watch on the Rhine) launched in the early morning hours of December 16, 1944, would result in the greatest single extended land battle of World War II. To most Americans, the fierce series of battles fought from December 1944 through January 1945 is better known as the “Battle of the Bulge.” Almost one million soldiers would eventually take part in the fighting. Different from other histories of the Bulge, this book tells the story of this crucial campaign with first-person stories taken from the authors’ interviews of the American soldiers, both officers and enlisted personnel, who faced the massive German onslaught that threatened to turn the tide of battle in Western Europe and successfully repelled the attack with their courage and blood. Also included are stories from German veterans of the battles, including SS soldiers, who were interviewed by the authors.

Drawn from the ranks of the Force Recon companies, these highly skilled and combat-proven Leathernecks would take the war to al Qaeda and the Taliban in America’s global war on terrorism. MARSOC is steeped in the heritage of the Marine Raiders of World War II, Force Reconnaissance companies of Vietnam, and Detachment-One, which stood up after the attacks on 9/11. The 1st Marine Regiment on Peleliu, September 15-21, 1944 Dick Camp

New in Paperback!

Item # 193474 AP ISBN: 978-0-7603-4127-8 (HC 978-0-7603-3493-5)

$18.99 US £14.99 UK $20.99 CAN 6 x 9 in 152 x 229 mm 320 pages, PB 100 b/w photos, 5 diagrams All rights available History/Military/World War II Ct. Qty. 24

“Recreates the ferocious tempo of the battle . . . a richly detailed, deeply moving story of desperate combat and of valor among comrades joined against impossible odds.” —WW II magazine ÎÎ Peleliu is featured in both Ken Burns’ monumental WWII documentary The War and the HBO miniseries The Pacific. ÎÎ Illustrated with over one hundred photographs in the text. ÎÎ First book to focus on the conduct of Marine Corps legend Lt. Gen. Lewis Burwell “Chesty” Puller as a regimental commander in combat.

Dick Camp retired from the Marine Corps as a full colonel and is now a senior executive at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center. He is the author of six previous books, including Operation Phantom Fury and Battle for the City of the Dead. Colonel Camp lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

In its time, Operation Stalemate, the code name for Peleliu, was not well known. It had been overshadowed by the summer 1944 Allied breakout from Normandy and the subsequent race across France and liberation of Paris. Since then, the Peleliu campaign has become much better known— Peleliu is featured in both Ken Burns’ monumental documentary The War and the HBO miniseries The Pacific—generating considerable controversy, with most historians regarding it as unnecessary. The battle resulted in a tremendous number of Marine casualties that foreshadowed a deadly shift in Japanese defensive strategy. Last Man Standing draws heavily on the author’s in-depth personal interviews and close association with two of the 1st Regiment’s battalion commanders—Ray Davis and Russ Honsowetz—as well as the vast oral, written and photographic collections of the Marine Corps History Division and Gray Research Center. It’s first-hand accounts from the men who survived represent a source of never-before published information that sets it apart from previous books of its kind. It is a story rich in detail—an exciting account of combat action.

Popular conspiracy theories from the crazy to the “watch your back.” ÎÎ Conspiracy theories remain popular, with new ones frequently appearing almost simultaneously with current headlines, drawing in new readers. ÎÎ Conspiracy theory popularity is no longer limited to the core believers; Dan Brown’s fiction has taken old secret-society conspiracies to the mainstream audience. ÎÎ Skeptics propose that conspiracy beliefs arise out of paranoia, cynicism, or a need to provide orderly explanations for random catastrophic events; if so, the modern world will be a rich source of conspiracy theories for years to come!

Paul Simpson is currently the editor of Star Trek Magazine, the official licensed magazine of the long-running TV and movie franchise. He is the author of many books on pop culture, including the official books charting the making of Farscape, Smallville, and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, as well as The Bond Files, and a biography of Nicole Kidman. (West Sussex, England)

You don’t need to be wearing a tinfoil hat to accept that Lincoln was assassinated by a conspiracy—it’s a historical fact. But these days the phrase “conspiracy theory” has become synonymous with labyrinthine plots and nebulous clues hidden in blown-up photos and arcane paintings. The simple suggestion of a conspiracy is often dismissed by the mainstream media as if inherently impossible. That’s What They Want You to Think sorts through the most well-known theories—both historically accepted and summarily dismissed—to provide an overview of the real, the possible, and the paranoid. Conspiracies covered include Pearl Harbor, JFK, MLK, Lincoln, Princess Diana, John Lennon, Roswell, Freemasons, Watergate, 9/11 and more!
