Tips for self-recording 7

Plan ahead

Consistency is key, try and record all footage in one session and be aware not to change things (glasses on or off/ removing a cardigan, tying hair up).

Review the questions beforehand.

You could write down your answer as a paragraph, bullet points, or notes to remind you what you want to say.

You can also record notes in the Storytagger platform that appear under the topics.

Find a good spot

Find a location that is well-lit with natural sunlight or plenty of indoor lighting.

Choose a quiet location with little background noise (street sounds, music, other people). Aim for a neutral or minimalist background. Avoid spaces with lots of echo.

Lighting

Record in daylight. Position yourself so windows (or your main light sources) are facing you, not behind you. Avoid overhead lights

Dress for success

Choose clothing that is appropriate for the video's purpose and audience.

Avoid wearing anything that has busy patterns.

Do not wear clothes that will blend with the background. For accessories, do not wear anything that will make noise when you move.

Camera set up and framing

Place your phone, camera or laptop on a steady surface. Holding your phone can cause shaky footage.

Center yourself in the frame.

Make sure the camera is at eye level.

If using a phone:

Film in a high resolution (720p or 1080HD) . Position your camera to shoot in portrait mode (vertically) unless otherwise requested by us.

Do a test run and review

Record a sample and check the framing, sound, and lighting.

Is the background distracting?

Are you in frame?

Can you hear yourself well enough?
