An old poet once said: “The old mountains are great men, upright, silent, arms folded, examining the world in their own way. They have seen empires come and go, changes to entire civilisations and their falls, stars suspended over their chests. They are great books, full of stories, but are not only stones and monuments.” This autumn, we welcome you to the kingdom of the five sacred mountains: China. Beyond its fairy-tales and its mysteries, Hiking on the Moon offers you a gentle trip through the Middle Kingdom.

QUESTIONS À
ANTOINE BOISSET

31-year-old, Antoine Boisset, is mad keen on nature and meeting people. On the one hand, he's in charge of professional sales for Quechua where he also supervises shoe testing. On the other: He is a MMG, Mid-range Mountain Guide. He is originally from Annecy in Haute-Savoie and qualified in 2006. For the last 10 or so years, he's been living in Les Contamines-Montjoie, a small village nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc. He tells us about his work on the mountain trails.
1 - Antoine, can you tell us about your job a s a m i d - r a n g e m o u n ta i n g u i d e a n d e x p l a i n e xactly what it is?
Safety and logistics are a fundamental part of being a MMG. But lots of other things soon take over. Trekking in the mountains is the perfect opportunity for sharing and meeting others. If I had to sum up, I would say that my job consists primarily of introducing others to the rich cultural tradition of the mountains, both in terms of landscape and nature, as well as the historical, cultural and human dimension. It's a bit of a hotchpotch; there's something for everyone. Group hikes are also wonderfully friendly occasions!
2 - What made you want to become a MMG?
I spent my childhood walking in the mountains with my family and that, most definitely, had an impact on my choice of career. The mountains are obviously my great passion. Trekking, exploring, understanding and sharing the mountains with others will be my life's work. The independent nature of this job is completely in keeping with the freedom I associate with the mountains. However, there are constraints and rules associated with the profession and then there's the financial aspect. But what I like is the feeling that I'm following a path which is leading me where I want to go. It's the charming thing about the job.
3 - Have you an y particular specialism? Do yo u o r ga n i z e t h e m e d wa l ks ?
I think that a MMG is primarily a non-specialized job. Since the needs of each group are numerous and varied. And that's all to the good, as I'm interested in lots of things! And, anyway, everything's connected in the mountains. If I were to have a specialism, it would be birds, and particularly birds of prey: magnificent eagles, intrepid falcons etc. I organize special walks to try to find them. I also work with a friend who rents donkeys in my village, Les Contamines-Montjoie. I've found that there's no better way of getting children to walk to those mountainous areas inhabited by marmots! A great thing about the job is that you're constantly adapting to meet everyone's needs: an undiscovered, off-the-trail hike or an unusual trek around Mont-Blanc. When you're dealing with all sorts, there's no set routine.
4 - Do you offer personalized walks, tailo r e d t o yo u r c l i e n t s ' n e e d s ? W h o w o u l d yo u r ecommend hire a MMG to go walking?
Everyone, of course! (laughter). There are so many different walks, landscapes and themes to explore in the mountains, that we can offer trips tailored to meet all needs, from the novice to the experienced trekker. We can meet very specific demands. And if I'm not competent in a particular area, I will refer to a colleague who is. So, to give you the most recent example, while I was supervising a photography course with a professional photographer: I met a family who'd been coming to the mountains for 20 years. Afterwards, they asked me if I would I take them on an off-the-trail hike, something they had always dreamed of but never dared to do. Also, I'm sure that if I had more opportunity to go out with other MMGs, I'd discover many more areas and learn much more.
5 - Finally, what kind of walker are you w h e n yo u ' r e n o t w e a r i n g yo u r M M G h at ?
When I'm working I spend most of the time trekking along footpaths, so alone, I like to go off-the-trail, straight up or down, or "drè dans le pentu" as they say in Haute-Savoie. Finally, only a tiny minority of peaks and regions are accessible by path and so there are so many other places to discover. I like to explore secluded, sometimes unpopular, places. You come across more birds and chamois than men. Some of the places give me ideas for future walks and others remain a secret, known just to me. I also like working with the wardens of the Haute Savoie Nature Reserves, helping to create inventories and monitoring the flora and fauna, to improve my knowledge of the mountains. And then I like to share all the places I've discovered with friends or family.

She ran into a young mortal named Liu Xiang. They fell in love and, time and time again, Liu Xiang begged the goddess to marry him. San Sheng Mu ended up by accepting. A son, Chen Xiang, was born out of their union. But the Goddess had a brother, a three-eyed god called Erlang Shen, who watched them from the sky. Erlang Shen was furious to see his younger sister violating the celestial laws by marrying a mere mortal. In his anger, he decided to imprison her inside Mount Hua, one of China's sacred mountains. So, Chen Xiang went to Mount Hua to find his mother. He was still only a child and half immortal. There he learnt martial arts from a Taoist Master. After several years, once the boy had become accomplished, his master presented him with a magic axe. Then the son set out to challenge his uncle and to win. By using his axe to cleave through Mount Hua, he was finally able to free his mother. And this explains why today, on the west side of Mount Hua, in the Province of Shaanxi, there is a huge rock split into three parts. It is evidence of Chen Xiang's path when he went to rescue his mother, the goddess, San Shengu Mu.

Mountains and religion are inseparable in China. In days gone by, the five sacred mountains were places of ritual for emperors who came to honour the gods. Inherited from Taoism, they have remained cult places which today are visited by large numbers of tourists. Wu Yue. This is the Chinese name given to China's group of five sacred mountains It was on these mountains that that emperors of ancient dynasties made sacrifices to offer to the Sky and the Earth. Ceremonies that symbolised their taking of the throne in accordance with God's will. The sacred mountains are imposing. As if they have emerged from the ground in a straight line. Even though they are not the country's highest mountain, they stand tall and upright, dominating the plains and basins. Every one is unique, every one has its own special landscape.

Southern Heng mountain – Nan Heng Shan / The elegant one This is the "southern mountain", situated in the Hunan province. In reality it is actually a chain of mountains. 150 kms long, it includes 72 peaks and reaches a height of 1360m. It is the smallest of the five sacred mountains. According to legend, Zhurong, one of the gods of fire, lived and died there. As far as its reputation of elegance is concerned, the "southern mountain" owes this to the gracious landscapes that surround it. Not far from the Xiangjiang river, and lush forests.

Very straight, at the top of a deep valley, in an area that is difficult for transport to access, this one that is nicknamed "Northern mountain" has two summits. One with an altitude of 2190m and the other 2017m. Both are separated by a passage of strategic value during the time of the great battles of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644): the Golden Dragon pass. Renowned for the peaceful atmosphere that reigns here, the architectural treasures that are the "hanging temples" nestle in the shade of the Northern Heng mountain. Like for example the Monastery of Xuankong Si which clings to the side of the mountain. Built high up to escape from the rising waters of the river down below, the construction dates from the 7th century. Today it is the region's second most important tourist site.

A symbol of dawn and renewal, the first to have been proclaimed a "sacred mountain", it has always been the most revered of the five, the one that the emperors absolutely had to visit once during their reign. With an impressive change in altitude, from 150m to 1545m at the Emperor of Jade peak, its summit, Mount Tai has a grandiose feel. Confucius himself exclaimed these words on climbing to its summit: "The world is small!" Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, it is a popular destination for millions of visitors from all around the world every year. Sometimes visitors take one of its two cable cars up to the summit, spend the night in a hotel at altitude and admire the famous sunrise from Mount Tai.

I have never specialised in or been especially drawn to any particular kind of photography, I am into everything and just follow my instincts. Capturing a moment, a situation, a feeling, that's my main motivation. This year, I had the chance to work with video. An experience that enabled me to handle images in a different way, using film. I ended up really enjoying the moving image, without abandoning photography.
Since then, my travels and encounters have fuelled this passion. Particularly in Nepal and Tibet, where the poetry that comes out of those grandiose and wild spaces deeply touched and inspired me. The simplicity, the pureness, the true beauty, free of any make up, and the kindness of the people I met there are just some of the many things that I wanted to capture on film.
The first contact I had with photographs was very natural. As a child I remember already hiding away my father's collection of cameras so that I could photograph the area around our home in Taiwan, my home country. It was this curiosity that led me to try my hand at photography. And here I am now, never able to let go of my camera.

«His Royal Highness, the vulture !»
Perhaps you've already been lucky enough to see one? A fine and slender silhouette with long, fringed feathers at the end of its wings and a maximum wingspan of 3 metres ... The bearded vulture disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century. However, here it is making a gradual comeback, thanks to efforts to reintroduce the species.

His Royal Highness, the vulture! The bearded vulture is one of 4 species of large vultures that you find in Europe. It is easily recognizable thanks to the goatee beard at the base of its beak, its diamond shape tail, its plumage of contrasting colours and its yellow eyes with red surround. The red of its eyes varies in intensity depending on how excited or stressed it is. And its impressive wingspan: between 2.45m and 2.85m from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other! Males and females both look the same: grey wings, a black band at the bottom of the neck, legs feathered right down to the claws, and a white-orangey head, stomach and chest. The ochre tint varies from one bird to another. To colour its feathers, the bearded vulture regularly takes mud baths, rich in iron oxide. This is its way of showing that it is superior to other fellow creatures. The young have more subdued plumage and a less streamlined silhouette. The weight of an adult raptor varies from 5-7 kg and its size can vary between 1.1m and 1.5m. The bearded vulture is at the top of the food chain. It is a carrion eater and feeds mainly on dead animals. It helps clean the environment and plays an essential role in the ecosystem.
Master of the peaks This bird likes mountainous regions. The terrain must be steep-sided with cliffs where it can nest. The bird flies over the rocks onto which it drops its largest bone, smashing it into small pieces so it can be easily swallowed. Which has earned it the name "bone breaker."

A BIRD OF ILL OMEN "Seriously threatened with extinction." These are the terms that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) used to describe the bearded vulture. In fact, this bird is one of the most endangered species in Europe. This is mostly because of its fragmented population which creates groups that are too isolated, from a genetic perspective. But also because of its dreadful reputation; it was often blamed for decimating herds of animals and even carrying off children. Result: In the early 20th century, it disappeared completely from the Alps and was only found in the Pyrenees and the mountains of Corsica.

In 1970s, the bearded vulture was reintroduced into all the countries along the Alpine Arc, thanks to an initiative by the Foundation for the Conservation of Vultures. A breeding network was set up and the small birds born in captivity were released into the wild. Fifteen or so years later, the species is making a comeback. 187 young birds have been reintroduced in the intervening years, up until 2012. The first successful reproduction in the wild occurred in 1997. Since then, 20 pairings have been counted in the Alps and there have been 83 births. Today, there are a total of around 150 birds living in the wild. In the French Alps, the Plan to Save the Bearded Vulture is led by, amongst others, the Conservatoire naturel des espaces de Haute-Savoie (Conservatory of nature sights in Haute-Savoie), called Asters (the name of an Alpine flower). Asters, which was founded about a dozen years ago, also plays a leading role in raising awareness and educating the public, as well as advising the community on environmental matters.

T h e f u t u r e o f t h e bearded vulture in France a n d a r o u n d t h e w orld Life goes on. The "new" bearded vultures in the Alps are gradually increasing in number. But we can take nothing for granted. There are still too few of them and reproduction, which is naturally a slow and precarious process, renders the species even more fragile. Not to mention their sensitivity to environmental pollutants. Since 2010, a National Action Plan has been in force, valid until 2019 and approved by the Ministry for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, and supported by the Rhône-Alpes department, amongst others, in partnership with Asters, the League of Protection for Birds, the Vanoise, Écrins, Mercantour and Vercors national parks and even the National Office for Hunting and Wild Animals. Objective: to develop the area of geographic distribution for bearded vultures and increase the number of reproductive couples. On a worldwide scale, the Foundation for the Conservation of Vultures plans to introduce a population of bearded vultures to the western Palearctic (from North Africa to Turkey and the Mediterranean basin) The idea is to link this population with small groups of bearded vultures already present in the Alps and Pyrenees. So the future is looking promising for the bearded vulture. But this species will nevertheless remain vulnerable for many years to come.

Apart from pollution, what threatens the survival of the bearded vulture today? There are several threats facing the population of bearded vultures. But the first remains the fragmented populations in Europe which creates genetic isolates. The direct causes of death, such as collisions with aerial cables, power lines or ski-lifts, poisoning and poaching, are all the more damaging if they affect adult birds. The effect of human interference can reduce reproductive success, which is already, naturally, quite low!
Will this species one day be genuinely "out of danger"? From a demographic point of view, the population of bearded vultures is autonomously viable. But genetic considerations are driving the continuation of planned releases in order to encourage diversity. Today we consider the Alpine reintroduction programme to be a success. And we believe that we are on the right path, even if the population is still quite small in size. The project is now refocusing its efforts on conservation. We are trying to address the threats that I have mentioned, as the future population is dependent on the natural population. But it is important that the death rate does not rise, particularly amongst adults. That could undo the last 20 years of work on the reintroduction programme.
What advice would you give to someone wishing to spot a bearded vulture in the wild? Paradoxically, the bearded vulture is quite easy to spot. In addition, when away from its breeding ground, it is actually rather curious. Small groups of bearded vultures are starting to appear in the Alps: in the North-West Alps (Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Valais and the Aosta valley) and in the central Alps (Engadine, Stelvio) where you'll find the majority of pairings. Often, before you even see the bird, you'll notice its shadow hovering above the cliffs. You can mostly recognize it from its silhouette. A small tip: when you hear the alarm cry of the marmot, during the spring or summer months, there is a strong chance that an eagle, its sworn enemy, or a para glider are nearby. But sometimes, it may also be our bearded friend!

BORN IN : XIAMEN I LIKE : climbing and scuba diving, two sports where you can completely connect with nature. I also like reading, writing and travelling. In fact, when I'm not travelling, I spend most of my time reading. When I travel (I've already been to more than twenty odd countries throughout the world) I'm always excited about exploring my new surroundings. When I come home, I put everything down in writing: the journey, the place, what I felt... Travelling is an enriching experience which fills me with positive energy! I DON’T LIKE : large shopping centres, cooking (although I love eating well!) and society life. AN ANECDOTE : I always come across animals when out trekking. One night, I saw a dingo on Fraser island, in Australia. I saw a snow fox in Tibet, 5,200 m high. Wild camels in the KyzylKoum desert in Kazakhstan. And ibexes on Mont Blanc.

Where do you like to go trekking in China? And why ? In Sichuan and Tibet. Mostly because there are lots of high peaks (above 3,500m) there. It's a sport where you compete against yourself. It's hard work but then you're rewarded by magnificent views of snow-capped mountains. I really like walking in the mountains in the snow. I like it so much that this summer, I went on an expedition to Elbrouz, the highest mountain in Europe. We set out from the North West of China, following the silk road, through the desert, across some of China's high mountain ranges, to Kazakhstan and Russia until we finally arrived in Turkey.
If you were to go to France hiking, what place(s) would you like to explore ? In fact, I've already been there when I did the Tour du Mont-Blanc. And I also climbed Mont Blanc! It was an unforgettable experience! If I were to go back, I would do it again, no doubt about it!

Why do you like trekking? When I was younger, I was a member of a pot holing club in the Pyrenees. I've always loved these mountains, circumstances brought me back here three years ago. Since then, I haven't stopped and trekking has become very important in my life. Sometimes I go to the mountains just to spend a night in the tent, to surrender myself to the immensity of the landscape and fall asleep under the starlit skies, which only shine this bright in the mountains. For me, trekking is a way of finding myself and relaxing away from my work. It's always great to be alone or with friends in the Pyrenees, in these magnificent mountains, discovering their wild and untamed side and trying out new challenges.
Where do you like to go trekking in France and why? I mostly go trekking in the Pyrenees, from the easternmost part to west (but most often in the Ariège because it's close) and I'm always on the look out for the most beautiful landscapes. This mountain range offers a diverse landscape with different degrees of difficulty which makes each trek exciting and different every time. Generally I like to set out to find a lake which gives a sense of purpose to my hikes. My itineraries are dictated by the height I want to climb. If I had the time and the means, I'd also go trekking in the Alps so I could climb peaks over three thousand metres.
If you were to go to trekking in China, what places would you like to explore? I don't know China at all. But if I had the chance to go trekking in China, I'd like to go to the Tibetan border and explore some of the vast, spiritual mountains, like the Three Sacred Mountains in Daocheng, in Sichuan province. I'd also love to catch a glimpse of Everest; it's got such mythical status amongst mountain lovers!

REsults The first time you wear the AirTECH Warm, what really surprises you, is the extremely airy, stretch fabric (which regains its shape after stretching). At first, you feel as if you've "got nothing on your back." But you quickly get used to it. Once you slip on a second, windproof layer, or you put on a rucksack. This is because of the different pressure on different parts of the skin. Between the top of sleeves, made from traditional breathable fibres, and the bottom of the back. And similarly between the sides and the armpits. Once you get used to it, you understand the rationale behind this rather high-tech item of clothing. The T-shirt performs best when worn with a good, well-ventilated rucksack, with or without a second layer (provided this is also breathable). There is a different level of protection between the front of the T-shirt, made from traditional fabric, which is exposed to the wind and cold. And the back, the part of the body usually best protected from the elements, which of course, becomes over-protected (and therefore too hot) when wearing a rucksack.

AirTECH Warm is clearly designed for moderate to intense mountain activities, in cold weather. But in winter, when you stop for a break, you will also need to wear a fleece or micro-polar layer. This is important to offset the loss of heat due to the fabric at the back of the T-shirt. The post-use rinse test yielded some interesting results. Simply rinse in cold water (e.g. mountain stream) and squeeze (but do not wring dry); the back of the T-shirt, the sides and underarms, dry extremely quickly (approximately 3 minutes). Compared with 15 minutes for the rest of the fabric (dried in the sun, with light breeze). Overall, it's ideal when trekking with a bivouac, provided that there is no snow, so that it can be rinsed at the end of the day and worn again the next day. If you're trekking during the day, and it's quite warm, of course you'll feel damp although the well ventilated back greatly reduces the amount of moisture. But all you need to do is sit for a while, with your back in the sun, and it will dry very quickly. The neck, which is lined in breathable fabric, is straight and rather high-cut (5 cm). This is particularly useful when in "cold weather" mode. At the front, the neck is almost "hermetically sealed" so as to keep the warm air close to the body. If you get too hot, the long zip at the front provides useful occasional ventilation. In my opinion, this item must be worn close to the body. The XL model which was tested appears to conform to standard sizing. AirTECH Warm is both a warm and high-tech T-shirt to be used in temperatures below 15/17°. A T-shirt which is well suited to trekking in autumn, winter and spring.
I N N O VAT I O N AirTECH Warm fabric changes when exposed to perspiration. The surface, in contact with the skin, shrinks thereby reducing the sensation of feeling cold after exertion.

For someone Swiss, from the Haut-Savoie, it was a total change of scene. Shanghai is a city of 23 million inhabitants, with a different culture and pace of life. And very different landscapes, so unlike anything we were used to, living at the foot of Mont Blanc. The city is constantly on the move, full of excitement; you really get the impression that it's becoming the "centre of gravity" for a large part of Asia. For the last five months, through work and tourist trips, we've had the chance to find out a little about trekking in China: holy mountains, staircases, wild countryside and mass tourism etc. The country is vast and this is only the start for us. And there seems to be an infinite variety of mountains...

The Huang Mountains (Huang Shan), which are called the "Yellow Mountains," are located to the east of Shanghai, in the province of Anhui. There, we discovered many unusual aspects about trekking in China: Lots of tourists and steep stairs going from the top to the bottom of the mountain. Without these stairs, it would be impossible to maintain the pathways. The slope is too steep and the terrain and climate make the ground unstable. The permanent humidity causes rain and mist which alternate with sunny spells, emphasizing the mystical feel of these mountains. This extremely popular site isn't one of China's holy mountains but it is still one of the ten biggest tourist attractions in the country. Every day, thousands of people climb the steps and take the cable cars to enjoy the most impressive views. Along the length of the chains, designed to prevent falls, couples cement their love with a padlock. Just like the Pont des Arts, in Paris.

Since China opened up at the end of the 1970s, it has become a dominant country on the world stage. Today it is the second largest economic power, just behind the United States. The cities on the east coast are experiencing an unprecedented explosion of growth. This nation, with its 1.3 billion inhabitants, is also known as the "workshop of the world." Since 30 years, the world has been able to see and explore the country and meet its people. Its subsequent development has been quite extraordinary and it is now extending inland, towards the west. Some of China's best-kept secrets can still be found in the Yunnan. Of the country's 56 ethnic groups, 36 live in the mountainous regions of this province, located in the south-west, bordering Burma, Laos and Vietnam. Daily life here remains unaffected by the economic boom. Strolling through these villages, you get an idea of what life was like in most parts of China a little over two decades ago. And you suddenly realize that the frenetic pace of city life has gradually distanced us from nature.

The first thing that surprises you are the magnificent surroundings and the serene atmosphere. The difference in altitude (the highest peaks are four thousand metres high), gives rise to a variety of landscapes and different weather conditions. The quiet paddy-fields emerge slowly through the morning mist and reveal the high peaks of the Vietnam border, just a stone's throw away. In winter, from November to February, the forests are enveloped in a thick blanket of fog, like a protective city rampart. But, in spring, this is then replaced by magnificent peach blossom. Summers can be humid with heavy rains but this is when the mountains are at their most lush and beautiful, punctuated by the occasional cascading waterfall.

Even more surprising is the slow pace of life, the hospitality and the love of detail and colour shared by the inhabitants of this vast country. The Yao people, like the Miao, the Yi or even the Hani, dress in richly coloured outfits, mostly made by hand and dyed using natural products. Every week, at local markets in different towns, you see an incredible variety of colours. Local craftsmen, tradesmen and customers, some who have come from villages accessible only by foot, gather in strange, animated groups.
« 带给你更多惊喜的是当地人缓慢的生活节奏、热情好 客、善于发现色彩的眼睛,以及更多更多的生活细节。» «It is the locals’ slow pace lives, hospitality and eye for color and detail that will amaze you even more.»
Try to talk to the customers, using a few words of Chinese, or just body language. Treat yourself to a nice pastry or try some fresh fruit; there are sweet mangos, bananas, the most exotic pomegranates and dragon fruit to choose from. Feeling slightly queasy after? Test out the various herbs and medicine sold; most of them are completely natural. Having a toothache? The dentist on the corner will certainly be able to help!

There's no "making do" for this, but there is the "three-layer" system! The principle is simple. Firstly, we put on undergarments. Worn next to the skin, they get rid of perspiration so it doesn't make us cold. Then comes the second layer. This is the one that insulates us from the cold thanks to its ability to trap air. And lastly, a third layer goes on, to protect us from bad weather. Hiking on the Moon is interested in the middle part, the "second layer". Because the weather changes quickly in the mountains, and because there are different ways of hiking, find out how to choose the fleece that will be best-suited to what you are going to do. More or less insulating, more or less breathable, with greater or lesser lightness. Some of the many criteria to take into account when making the right choice.

// THE FLEECE, THE KEY ITEM FOR WINTER. We also call it the "intermediary layer", the "thermal layer" or quite simply "layer 2". The second layer provides optimum thermal insulation by trapping air, the best insulator there is. Its capacity to do this varies according to the fabric it is made from. The most well-known of these fabrics is the famous fleece. In all its forms. From micro-fleece, to highloft fleece (shaggy look) and stretch fleece. With one side brushed (smooth side on the outside), both sides brushed (the fibres are shaven in a certain way to achieve a downy appearance both inside and out), are even more possible variations of the fleece, enabling different levels of protection to be achieved. It has many advantages. Affordably priced, easy to look after, gets rid of humidity effectively (thanks to the polyester weave) and quick drying. It is available in different thicknesses, different densities, for a protection level suited to the climate and the level of intensity of activity. There are many other fabrics available for the intermediary layer. Particularly wadding, light, also easy to look after and can be very technical and easy to compress. There are also down-filled jackets, filled with duck or goose feathers and down, both of which act as an insulator. Feathers are the best of the second layers as far as thermal insulation is concerned. Choosing a down-filled jacket means choosing the best possible combination of warmth and lightness. Its thermal superiority is explained by the inflating capacity of down-filled clothing, higher and longer-lasting than synthetic fabrics. However it is recommended to come prepared with a third layer in your bag, ideally a very thin jacket which is both waterproof and breathable (like the Helium Rain jacket). Once feathers are exposed to long periods of rain, they lose their inflating power.

The more intense your walk gets, the more you will need clothing next to your body. So fleeces with added elastane are the perfect choice for you. Also think about fleeces that come with accessories such as hoods, half-zips, full zips, ventilation zips or even thumb-holds to prevent air getting in while still offering freedom of movement.

Another innovation: 3D mesh, a honeycombed component that gives excellent air porosity and therefore significantly increases the clothing item's breathability.
Lastly, electro-heating technology is also being tested. This consists of adding hot spots that will then be battery-powered to the clothing item.

In the mountains. But even more so in the city, for day to day life, strolling around or travelling, China has its own unique outdoor trends. More than just a way of dressing, it is full of energy, an array of colours and patterns that you wouldn't find anywhere else.

Just within the country itself, the climate varies greatly from one region to another. So, people don't dress in the same way. When there is an average winter temperature of 3°C in Shanghai, it will be -4°C in Beijing. With a significant difference between the very hot summers and the very cold winters. Result: the reputation of down jackets is sealed, with or without fur-lined hoods, and with very fitted shapes.

Patterns are everywhere. In the shapes, the cuts. No plain t-shirts, much too basic. To such an extent that most collections display a design specially designed for the Chinese range. With lots of geometry, checks and prints. Sometimes very obvious, sometimes subtle, there is also a lot of detailing. Right down to the zips, nearly always intricate and colourful. And for perfect coordination, it's not unusual to see parents and children wearing tops of the same colour or a matching one.

The most noticeable aspect of outdoor collections in China is the omnipresence all year round of anti-UV garments, often with an index of UPF 50 (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), the maximum protection. Because for most Chinese, white is the symbol of beauty. This explains the success of ultra-light jackets: thin, protective, perfect for guarding against the sun's rays. You find it everywhere, in many different forms, in all possible fabric combinations. Accompanied by a multitude of caps, sunhats, bonnets and hats. Not to mention gloves, also popular. But times are changing. Young Chinese girls dare getting sun tanned more and more.

DŽ so that they keep their shape, leave them to cool vertically, by placing them downwards in an egg box.
ᝧ᭦ ᧇڃѫ᧾ - Beat the egg white to stiff peaks and add the sifted icing sugar, then the melted butter. - Sift the flour well and add it to the mixture. - Mix it until you have a smooth dough that is not sticky. LEAVE TO REST FOR 15 MINUTES
- On top of a sheet buttered aluminium foil, cut out small circles of about 8cm in diameter in the dough. - Place them in an oven set to 180° (gas mark 6) for about 5mins, until the edges of the biscuits are just starting to turn gold. - Carefully unpeel the tuile-like biscuits from the foil using a spatula. You then have to work quickly, before the biscuits harden. Place a small piece of paper with a written quote on top of each one, and fold it in half. Be careful, the biscuits should become rounded. So only stick the edges, not the middle. Then bring the two sides towards each other to give a horseshoe shape to your fortune cookies.
