Strategic Plan
2019 - 2024
For we who dare
2019 - 2024
For we who dare
Here I stand
For it is me to dare, For me to dare whilst others dream, Pity on bewildered fools. Have I choice, Stand to save firm? Some will love me, some will mock ... For I am young.
I will be heard, I’ve much to say, With courage and with hope I’ll lead the way. And universal truth will show the light of love, And while at times I’ll stumble and I will fall, I will arise, and I will strive to prove universal light and love, Light and love! And love, Love!
It is for me to dare.
Welcome to our plan for the future of Queen Margaret College. We are delighted to share our vision for the next iteration of the College, as we move into our second century of educating future leaders.
Our vision is to empower all who learn and work here. Our students and staff will see more possibilities for their futures here than anywhere else. Our students will stride into their future with the confidence, curiosity and courage to adapt to change and lead rewarding lives.
To achieve our vision we, as educators, must think, behave and work differently. We will cultivate an agile, dynamic environment and advance collaborative practices to enable us to navigate change in an increasingly connected world.
Our desire for Queen Margaret College Old Girls to be passionate learners, resilient women and future leaders remains constant. Our learners will openly embrace technology; be confident relationship builders; have empathy; participate in diverse communities; take risks; and have the courage to fail. This strategy gives us a dynamic framework to achieve these aspirations.
The Queen Margaret College Model for Learning is our pivotal platform for change. It puts learners in charge of their learning and
challenges educators to understand the impact they are having and to act on that understanding.
We believe the best learning happens in partnership. We will strengthen our relationship with the Queen Margaret College community and grow and deepen mutually beneficial relationships with organisations in the Wellington region, New Zealand and internationally. We are excited about creating meaningful internship opportunities and look forward to collaborating with industry, business leaders and tertiary institutions. We welcome outside expertise and different perspectives as we know this will provide a catalyst for change.
My original commitment to this school was to keep our learners at the heart of decisionmaking. This has not changed. This strategic plan is the formal iteration of that intent. I have confidence in the energy and passion that every member of our community brings, to ensure our learners are empowered to live, learn and lead.
Together we will continue the 100-year legacy of Queen Margaret College, and the work of all the women who have come before us to create new, unlimited horizons for our learners.
Ngā mihi nui, Jayne-Ann Young
Our strategy is a response to the trends shaping the world we live in today, and will continue into the future. Priorities for us are:
01 Preparing our students for formal and informal learning opportunities throughout their lives. We aim to foster continuous development of the knowledge and skills they will need for lifelong employability and personal fulfilment. To do this we will tailor our learning proposition to meet the needs of our people in this Fourth Industrial Revolution.
02
Anticipating the impact of globalisation of education, new work models, job creation and innovation. To do this we need to provide our people with authentic insights and experiences to deepen each individual’s understanding of themselves as a learner and their potential future.
03 Responding to young people’s expression of social consciousness and societal participation, which continues to grow and change. To support our learners we need to ensure they have a voice that is not only heard, but collaboratively acted upon; that they have opportunities to demonstrate entrepreneurship and to engage as responsible citizens.
Queen Margaret College is Wellington’s leading independent school for young women. We are a modern, inclusive, forward-focused school in the heart of our vibrant capital city. We welcome all families, and embrace all cultures and traditions at our school. We strive for excellence in learning and teaching, take pride in all that our students do, and celebrate their accomplishments.
The Presbyterian founders of our school believed in the best education possible for girls and gave us sound values based on the Christian faith. We are thankful for this heritage to build on.
In August 2017, we were delighted to welcome Jayne-Ann Young as our new school Principal. Jayne-Ann brings passion, energy and a deep well of experience as an internationally recognised educator to her role. Jayne-Ann and her team are applying a research-based approach to learning and teaching that encourages collaboration, creativity, problem solving, risk taking, tenacity and flexibility.
Over the last 10 years, the Board has invested strongly in new facilities to create a modern and engaging learning environment. In 2018, we opened a new boarding facility,
Queen Margaret House, to provide more options for local and international families. In 2019, we are celebrating the centenary of Queen Margaret College’s foundation. As we mark this occasion we are mindful of our founders’ values, in preparing our students for the challenges of the 21st century.
We are proud of our outstanding academic achievements. As an International Baccalaureate World School, Queen Margaret College offers a unique education opportunity in the Wellington region. Our learning offers students a strong sense of global awareness, helping them to understand how they can play their part in the world.
This strategy outlines who we are, what we stand for, and our vision and purpose over the next five years. We will not be standing still and the world around us is not standing still. Queen Margaret College can and will provide our students with the best possible education in this dynamic world.
Ngā mihi nui,
Andrew Knight Chair of Queen Margaret College Board of Governors
Our vision is to be world class in all that we do to develop participatory citizens of a global community.
They are our young people who value their school, city, country, and planet; who stride into their future believing that they can create change, and who are curious, courageous and dare to live an adventurous life.
When our students reflect on their time at Queen Margaret College they will recall they had a voice, they were their own agents of change and they were challenged in their learning in a supportive, holistic environment. They will remember that together we created special memories that continue to define the sisterhood of Queen Margaret College.
