Our Curriculum and Striving for Top Academic Results
Years 1–6
Our primary school students follow the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) which focuses on sparking curiosity, collaboration and development of critical thinking from an early age.
Years 7–10
Students undertake the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), building on the foundations laid by PYP and enabling them to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world, whilst preparing them for the challenges of a senior curriculum.
QMC promotes multilingualism and at least one addition language to English is compulsory – French, Te Reo Māori, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese.
Years 11–13
All students undertake Level 1 of New Zealand’s National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), in Year 11. During this year, students and their families choose whether they continue with NCEA Levels 2 and 3, or commence the two-year IB Diploma.

A Home away from Home
Accommodation Options
Creating a supportive home environment is very important to us. Students have the choice of our onsite luxury boarding house, or a long-term QMCapproved homestay. Boarding is recommended as students experience the best of both, living onsite during term-time and living with a local family in the school holidays.
Every girl has their own private bedroom, which they can personalise as they wish.
Benefits of living in the boarding house include a 30-second walk to school and access to the school’s gym, music rooms and art rooms during evening and weekends. Weekends can be spent getting involved in the weekly house activities, such as trampolining, visits to museums and galleries, shopping trips, daytrips to the beach and more.
We regularly put on themed events such as the Chocolate Extravaganza, Halloween fancy dress night, karaoke and the annual etiquette dinner. Girls can share their culture and learn about others’ too, for example, making dumplings for Lunar New Year, or taking part in the Matariki (Māori New Year celebration) dinner and Midwinter Christmas Dinner.
Our boarding house staff know the importance of care and support to create a home away from home for students. The boarding house opened in 2017 and was built to be homely, safe and luxurious. Both international and local girls live in the boarding house, creating an immersive and diverse environment.
QMH Offers:
Local embassies are a short distance away away so students can go there for cultural events and volunteering opportunities. Only a 15-minute walk away are the shopping district, swimming pool and music and sporting venues. The Wellington International Airport is 15 minutes from the city centre.

Student Wellbeing Underpins our Success
The wellbeing of our students is our top priority. Happy, balanced students can concentrate, learn and blossom in every part of their lives.
People often ask how QMC achieves such amazing academic results. We believe it’s because our girls are well supported, well cared for, and know they belong. This allows them to spend their energy on learning and growing.
Our students are met at Wellington International Airport by a QMC team member, who then takes them to their new accommodation.
On arrival, we arrange for:
• Relaxed one-on-one chats with our Wellbeing Coach and school nurses so that students are comfortable with and know these key staff.
An in-depth orientation of the school and Wellington city.
• Two peer buddies: students in their class to show them around and invite them into their friend group.
Regular meetings with key staff such as their Dean and the international department.
• Monday sessions with their tutor class and teacher where they join in interactive wellbeing activities.
Fun Friday tutor class activities.
To help with integration and reduce stress students join a social sport (non-competitive and fun).
• No experience is needed as students learn together.
• Winning is not important. It's about fun and relaxation, not pressure.
Students are also encouraged to join cultural groups, so they make friends outside their year level.

The Value of Mentorship
All international students are matched to a female mentor, who is like a caring, local mother. These women are Wellingtonbased native speakers. They are well trusted by QMC and help add another layer of support for our students.
Our mentors:
Invite students to dinners at their homes and take them out for activities.
Understand both cultures and provide a feeling of home.
• Help with cultural adaptation and practical things, like trips to the airport and buying uniforms.
• Attend all meetings with their students, such as parent teacher meetings and course selection evenings.
• Liaise between the parent and school when necessary.

ESOL is offered on a needs basis. Before arrival at QMC, they are tested using the online Oxford Placement Test. Their results are analysed by the Head of Languages and ESOL teaching staff to focus on any areas that need support. We test every six months. The ESOL teacher stays in regular contact with the students’ subject teachers to discuss how their learning can be further supported.
Our ESOL classes are small, and students receive one-on-one guidance to help them progress. In this supportive environment, they feel confident to share their thoughts and ideas. ESOL students all participate in extracurricular Speech and Drama lessons in small groups (between
one and four students). This tuition helps them to improve their fluency and confidence speaking in front of an audience. They also sit an examination at the end of the year and receive a certificate in Speech and Drama, which looks fantastic on their CV.
The students' English proficiency progress is tracked and when they reach B1 proficiency they join mainstream English classes. Students in the ESOL programme take all their other subject classes as mainstream, allowing them to mix frequently with local students.
By far the best language development comes from the fact that the girls are in a fullimmersion English environment.
They hear and speak English throughout the day, chatting with new friends, following classroom instructions to complete activities, socialising at mealtimes and attending school events.
A number of our international students go on to take the IB Diploma. In Group 1 students study their mother-tongue literature, and in Group 2, they study English as their acquisition language. This allows students to maintain their heritage culture and excel in English, gaining a bilingual Diploma. In 2021 our school gained four bilingual diplomas, two of which scored in the 40s, the top 10 percent of the world.

Teachers and friends! They helped me so much to grow as a person. I wouldn’t have been where I am now without their support. Also, I cannot thank enough my host families for providing me such a loving environment and treating me like their daughter.
Do you think going to QMC has helped you in terms of your career/personal development?
YES. I wouldn’t have been as adventurous as I am today without the time at QMC. Never imagined that I would study, work and live in another country. After I learnt how progressive NZ was in terms of gender equality, working for UN Women became my dream. And now I work there. I am truly grateful for all the experiences at QMC.

The University of Melbourne; now working in Set Design at SBS broadcasting company in Seoul. Hyun designed the sets for the hugely popular Netflix Drama 'Mr. Sunshine', in addition to the sets required for TV news and televised aspects of the Seoul mayoral race.

It was a precious time. I remember when I was close to teachers, and I could ask questions and learn comfortably.
Do you think going to QMC has helped you in terms of your career/personal development?
I still say that attending QMC in New Zealand was the time that made me who I am today. I actually believe so. The teachers who supported me to grow into my true self, the beautiful school buildings I saw every day, and the curriculum and school system that made me stronger remain in my memory to this day. I thought that if I had a child in the future, I would like to have them walk the same path.
