Dr Christopher Young, University of Cambridge Dr Christopher Young is the Head of the Department of German and Dutch at the University of Cambridge and reader in Modern and Medieval Studies. His primary teaching and research interests focus on the history of European and, in particular, German sport. He has authored several books on German literature and culture, the most recent of which explores the German national identity at the Munich Olympics in 1972. www.qmul.ac.uk/events

Butterworths Lecture on Law and Society The Changing Nature of the Judicial Process Rabinder Singh QC Rabinder Singh QC practices at Matrix Chambers, and is a special professor at the University of Nottingham. His publications include (as co-author) Human Rights: Judicial Enforcement in the UK. He is a Recorder of the Crown Court and a deputy High Court judge. This lecture is accredited with one CPD point.

Reducing men’s average salt intake will reduce incidences of cardiovascular disease which will save thousands of lives every year. The week will encourage everyone, especially men, to think about how much salt they are eating, to check labels when shopping and to make more of their own food at home, while also encouraging the food industry to reduce the salt that they add to processed foods. The Spring concert will comprise of a rich and exciting programme of music from Venice, Rome, Milan and Naples by Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Palestrina, Rossini, Verdi and Pergolesi. The architecture and ambient acoustics of this superb building provides the setting for such rich music especially that associated with St. Mark’s Venice.

London Hospital Dental Club Annual Clinical Meeting Curated by Dr Tim Friel (q BDS, The London, 1988), Clinical Lecturer in the Centre for Adult Oral Health at the Institute of Dentistry, the programme for 2011's Annual Clinical Meeting will follow the theme of dentistry for an ageing population. Friday's speakers include Peter Briggs, Consultant and Clinical Lead in Restorative Dentistry at St George's Hospital, Tooting on ‘Management of heavily restored dentition’; Dr Phil Atkin, Consultant in Oral Medicine at Cardiff University Dental Hospital and School on ‘Oral medicine for the older patient’; Francis Hughes, Professor of Periodontology, on ‘Periondontal management of the older patient,’ and Tim Newton, Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry, on ‘Motivation and behaviour change,’ from King's College London. A drinks’ reception in the Old Library will close Friday’s programme, followed by a threecourse subscription dinner at Boundary Restaurant in Shoreditch. On Saturday we welcome Dr Jeremy Hayes from the Department of Adult Dental Health at the University of Wales College of Medicine who will speak on ‘Dental

The LHDC’s Annual Business Meeting will be held at 12.30pm, followed by lunch at Tayyabs, a Pakistani Punjabi restaurant, in Whitechapel. 26 March 2011, all day Alumni Spring Lunch The Alumni Spring Lunch is an ideal opportunity for you to reconnect with your contemporaries and visit our main campus at Mile End.

Following lunch, you will have the opportunity to take a behind-thescenes tour of the College Archives which are housed in the newly refurbished Library. Lorraine Screene, the Archivist, will also give an overview of the online exhibition The Students’ Experience of Westfield College which explores the memories of many of the students who studied at Westfield between 1882 and 1989. You can also join alumnus Dr Jon Davis, Executive Director of the Mile End Institute, for a talk about former Prime Minister, Clement Attlee’s life and see a small exhibition of Attlee memorabilia. The College has acquired a statue of Attlee, which stood previously in Limehouse. It now stands outside the Library on our Mile End campus.

The Alumni Spring Lunch will close with campus tours and afternoon tea in The Curve, which is located in the Westfield Student Village. Start rounding up your friends for your own mini-reunion. A display of Victorian pathology illustrations from the Pathology Museum of St Bartholomew’s Hospital will be on display in the Octagon for your viewing before and after lunch.

26 March 2011, all day Astronomy Unit and School of Physics Alumni Day Astronomy and Astrophysics Alumni are invited to join Jim Emerson, Professor of Astrophysics, and Richard Nelson, Professor of Maths and Astronomy, for a relaxed programme of lectures, conversation and lunch. The Astronomy Unit at Queen Mary, University of London is a leading research centre in areas as diverse as solar system dynamics and cosmology – from the rings of Saturn to the birth of the Universe. Based in the School of Mathematical Sciences but closely

linked to the School of Physics, the Astronomy Unit is one of the main centres of astrophysics research in the UK. A wide range of research areas is studied including solar system dynamics, space and solar plasmas, planetary atmospheres, stellar structure, planet formation, survey astronomy and cosmology.
