27 May 2011, 5pm Self-organization, pedagogy and reproduction Janna Graham, University of Zagreb This event is part of a series, a mixture of workshops and discussions on self-organisation and non-hierarchical work practices, that aims to bring together practitioners and theorists of forms of organisation that eschew hierarchical modes of division of labour as part of a critique of the imposition of work and productivity for profit, to share working practices and address their problems, obstacles, successes, and aspirations. Previous events in the series include self-organisation and group ecologies, on internal ecologies, openness and closure,

affects and ghosts, habits and artifices, scale and scope; and selforganisation and the economy, from cooperatives to social enterprises, between state funding, self funding, alternative economies and charity dependence, authorship, redistribution of resources, production of value and coproduction; and self-organisation and community, on external dynamics, political discourse and outreach; the role of the organizer when working with constituencies; issues of politicization, involvement, negotiation. Recordings and materials are available here http://self-org.blogspot.com/. Venue: Lock Keepers Cottage, Mile End Event contact: selforganising@gmail.com

31 May 2011, 6.30pm Inaugural Lecture Apparent Perfection: The Image of John F. Kennedy Mark White, Professor of History This lecture will consider how John F. Kennedy was able to develop what became one of the most powerful, seductive images of any modern political leader. The process by which an alluringly multi-faceted image of JFK was constructed during his lifetime - as erotic symbol, familial symbol, war hero, precocious politician, and man of letters -- will be examined. How the 'Camelot' image of Kennedy evolved in American political culture after his assassination will also be explored. 3 June 2011, 6.30pm The Jenny Cheshire Lectures in Sociolinguistics Articulating Sociohistorical Linguistics Ecologically: Lessons from European Colonial Expansion Salikok Mufwene, Frank J. McLoraine Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago Adopting an emergentist approach to language evolution but focusing especially on the late wave of the Indo-European dispersal since the 15th century, I will show how changes undergone and caused by European colonial languages largely reflect changes in the socioeconomic structures experienced and initiated by the migrating populations. I will discuss the extent to which particular population structures in the colonies

qua contact settings are consequences of particular economic systems (the latter being largely determined by particular geographical ecologies), and how the notion of 'population structure', augmented with that of 'periodization', can help us account for the specific ways in which the relevant European languages evolved structurally. I will also argue that the same ecological factors invoked to explain the varying directions of structural changes can also help us account differentially for language vitality (which languages prevailed at the expense of which others where and when) in the colonies.
