Student and Alumni views
Duncan Hobday, UK, Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property 201011, GlaxoSmithKline Prize for Best Patent student in the Cert IP, Trainee Patent Attorney, W. P. Thompson & Co “I had been in the profession for around a year and this Certificate formed the next part of my training to become a qualified UK Patent Attorney. I found the content and delivery of the course exceeded my expectations. “The lecturers gave a solid and accessible introduction to all the general aspects of intellectual property law as well as offering viewpoints and analysis from both academics and professionals. The friendly atmosphere meant that it was easy to meet, discuss the course and socialise with trainees from other firms. The course has provided a great foundation for me to build on. It gave me the opportunity to study and learn about aspects of the law in depth, which I am now able to practically apply in my work. My experience at Queen Mary, although short, was extremely rewarding and enjoyable.”

Emily Cheah, Malaysia, MSc Law and Finance 2011-12 “Before coming to Queen Mary, I did a Law LLB at UCL. I decided to undertake postgraduate study because I felt that given the current economic conditions, it was necessary to do everything I could possibly do to distinguish myself from other candidates vying for the same job. The MSc Law & Finance is unique in that it offered those with a law background, like me, to get a foothold in economics and finance subjects. It is one of the very few institutions in the UK to offer this degree, which I felt would be extremely advantageous for my future job prospects. Also, it was clear that the School are composed of giants in their field – I would be learning from the best! “The teachers have been excellent at fostering a friendly and open learning atmosphere. You are encouraged to ask questions, both in and out of the lecture theatre – and help is always at hand. This open policy ensures the material is truly engaging and rewarding. Also, because the course is crossdisciplinary, almost everyone on the course, whether they are from an economics, law or professional background, is challenged to learn something new. The course directors take great pains to invite extremely illustrious and high-profile speakers to deliver module lectures – this gives you a real insight into the reality of working in industry.”

Nicholas Lawn, UK Associate, International Arbitration and Litigation Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (UK) LLP Diploma in International Arbitration 2011-12 “As a senior associate in the International Arbitration group at Skadden in London, with a number of years of practical experience, I was interested not so much in the nuts and bolts of arbitration as in the conceptual framework of the area. The Diploma has certainly deepened my understanding of this framework as well as the current issues and debates within the discipline. The international and comparative approach to the subject has not only broadened my knowledge of regulation in key arbitral fora but has sharpened my understanding of the positions taken on important procedural issues under English law. “Of course, there are now many arbitration specific courses offered in London (and throughout the world) from which to choose. The Diploma at Queen Mary, however, must be the oldest and one of the best. I have been able to achieve my academic objectives taught by an outstanding faculty, both at the cutting edge of academic research and deeply experienced in practice, and I have been able to do this while continuing to work in my firm. While this takes some juggling of commitments, it is entirely possible to do. “Many of the students on the Diploma course are already qualified lawyers in a range of jurisdictions. Attending the Diploma has, therefore, also allowed me to meet many other practitioners of international arbitration from jurisdictions far and wide, from San Jose through Prague to Mumbai – learning from each the nuances of arbitration practice in their jurisdictions...and also providing a great way to build up a network of international contacts.”

Vanessa Mortiaux, UK Senior Legal Counsel, Information Law Everything Everywhere Limited LLM in Computer and Communications Law -Distance Learning 2007-2011 “The course helped further my expertise in computer and communications law, a fast changing and fascinating field. It is taught by leading academics and professionals to a very high standard through online tutorials, discussions and resources. The online delivery makes it convenient for working people. The course is international with students of varied backgrounds, providing excellent networking opportunities. There is a very enjoyable annual meet up with seminars and heated debates on current topics. I thoroughly recommend the LLM to anyone interested to work in this field and practitioners who are keen to enhance their knowledge of computer and communications law.” Dr Estelle Katsimani Senior Associate at Herbert Smith LLP specialising in Construction disputes, Graduate PG Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration (Distance Learning “I can highly recommend the Postgraduate Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration. The course is structured in such a way that it provides an excellent grounding to the student and practitioner alike on all major issues arising in day-to-day arbitration practice whilst at the same time promoting academic research of the highest standard on selected topics of interest. It is very interactive and affords the students the benefit of direct contact with enthusiastic and supportive lecturers who are recognised as leading authorities in the field of International Arbitration”

Deborah Dudda, Germany English and European Law LLB and LLM in Competition Law 2011-12 “I completed my LLB degree at Queen Mary with an Erasmus year in Paris before enrolling on the LLM in competition law. The standard of teaching at Queen Mary is excellent. My professors have been helpful and organised and always approachable. Throughout the academic year I have also had a variety of guest speakers teach my courses which were academics and practitioners alike. I really enjoy the learning aspect of the whole LLM, as well as the interaction and discussions with students from all over the world. “The advantage of the campus is that everything is close by, especially if you are new to the city. You have the gym and the library at a stone's throw from the accommodation, so no excuses there! Another plus point is that if you live on campus, you will meet and connect with people from your course faster and have more time to forge friendships and explore the city together.”

Omosede Okpiaru, Nigeria, LLM in Tax Law 2011-12 Winner of the University of Lagos/CCLS Scholarship “I completed my LLB at the University of Lagos in Nigeria, and since being called to the bar, worked in both the banking industry and the Lagos state internal revenue service. I felt it was time to do a Masters programme and decided to focus on taxation law. Since the beginning of this session, I have been enrolled on the LLM at Queen Mary, University of London. “My research showed that Queen Mary is one of only a few universities that offers the LLM in taxation. This has been a huge boost to my career objectives, offering me the chance to compare various tax regimes. I have taken courses in both UK and EU tax laws; in my courses, I have discovered the different theoretical underpinnings of tax regimes in major countries. Another advantage of studying here is its location in central London, a major European commercial and political centre. I must also point out, that as a visually impaired student, I have received tremendous assistance, both from the department and the international office.”

Ana Georgina Alba Betancourt, Mexico, Current PhD Student Alternative Dispute resolution for Intellectual Property Right disputes in Mexico and the UK “After qualifying in Mexico and having worked as a Law Clerk, I wanted to pursue my postgraduate studies abroad, since my main interest is in the international business law field. I heard about Queen Mary from one of my colleagues on the Master in Bucerius Law School, Germany, and after doing some research I discovered that Queen Mary is one of the best Universities in the UK, especially in my fields of interest. I have now finished the second year of research in Arbitration of Intellectual Property, thanks to the sponsorship of the Mexican government. Queen Mary organised two intensive weeks of research seminars at IALS which I found very interesting and helpful. Once a week we also attended a seminar at Queen Mary, which I considered very important, especially at a very early stage of the research, when you don't really know how and where to start your research, or even how to coordinate it with your supervisor. PhD life can be very lonely, but with the activities that Queen Mary organises, you have the chance to meet up with the other PhD students, whom could be doing something related to your research, which is great for exchanging ideas. I think that interacting with fellow PhD students enriches your own research and I'm very glad that at QM this is encouraged, together with the support of the supervisors.

Sarah Singer, UK, Current PhD Student The Impact of Antiterrorist Measures on the Exclusion of Individuals from Refugee Status in the UK “I graduated from the LLB at Queen Mary in 2008. After some travel, I decided to continue my studies and did the LLM at UCL, before starting the PhD at Queen Mary in 2010. “I applied to do my PhD at Queen Mary because I really enjoyed my time here as an undergraduate. I think the teachers focus much more on the students han they might do at other universities, and are very approachable and down to earth. The Law Department as a whole is receptive to new ideas and approaches. The postgraduate/ staff seminars and lectures give people at all stages oftheir research the chance to share their work with others, and receive feedback. Studying on a research based course means you have much less guidance on what you should be reading and how much work you should be producing. You have to be very self motivated, and receptive to others’ comments and suggestions as to the direction your work is taking. I have an amazing supervisor. She is always supportive, but crucially, also gives me extensive critical feedback on my work. She is always on hand to meet or answer any queries I have, and goes out of her way to let me know about research, lectures or any other opportunities that she thinks will be of interest.”
