by Olayemi Okeniyi The colors purple and green were prominently on display on Saturday March 26, 2022, in the Rochdale Village Grand Ballroom. Women of all ages, shapes and sizes poured into the Grand Ballroom in celebration of womanhood. In honor of Women’s History Month, Rochdale Village’s Community Center Committee set the day aside to commemorate the accomplishments and contributions of women to society. Reluctant Activist, Public Speaker and
Author, Gwendolyn Carr was keynote speaker and one of the exceptional women, who graced the guests with her attendance. Carr, who was an MTA train operator until July 17, 2014, when her son Eric Garner was held by a police officer in a prohibited chokehold which led to his death. She retired from the MTA and has since dedicated her life to activism. In her address to the gathering, Carr thanked the Rochdale Village Community Center Committee and Board for inviting her. As someone with friends and family in Rochdale,
she joked about never finding parking on her visits to the campus. She called on those in attendance to open up communication with the youth. “I decided that after my son’s death all children will be my children. If I see someone in the street doing wrong, I like to speak to them, because sometimes all they need is a kind word. Sometimes kids act up because they are craving attention,” she said. Referencing Maya Angelou, she spoke directly to the “phenomenal women,” at the event. “That’s what we all are, phenomenal
because we do the work, we get out there we have to pick up the slack, we have the babies, the babies hear our hearts beat for nine months and we have to worry about them once they are here. Speaking on the death of her son, Carr said that the current fight for justice was not for her son, explaining that while she wants his name and memory to remain, she knows that she cannot bring back the dead. “But there are other children, and many who are unborn and a stand has to be made before they are lost.
FREE ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES AT ROCHDALE VILLAGE LIVING IN ROCHDALE VILLAGE • SPRING 2022
It is never too late to earn your diploma!
by Cynthia Bernadine The free Adult Education Program at Rochdale Village has been meeting the needs of the community for over 20 years. The program, which is offered through the NYC Department of Education District 79 Adult and Continuing Education Department, assist adults over the age of 21 in preparing to take the High School Equivalency Exam (HiSET). The HiSET is the new alternative to the GED test; it helps you achieve the important state-issued high school equivalency credential. Passing the HiSET exam shows that you have attained the academic knowledge and proficiency equivalent to those of a high school graduate, hence earning your diploma.
Instructors, Dr. Ron, Latasha Crawford, Eva Knight, and Natasha McClean, have decades of combined expertise and work closely with students to help them gain confidence in their ability to attain their goals by improving their literacy and numeracy skills, preparing students for exams and ultimately their future. General support is also provided throughout the process to help students stay on track such as childcare options. The program has already assisted several Rochdale Village residents in earning their HiSET Diploma. Once students complete the program and earn their diploma, family and friends get to celebrate this huge accomplishment with a full graduation ceremony, complete with caps, gowns, tears and cheers. Once again, the program is FREE and held in the Rochdale Village Community Center in Room 8. Classes are Mondays through Fridays, 8:30AM to 11:30AM and 12:00PM to 3:00PM. Walk-in registration every day from 9am-12pm. For more infor mation, please email: ek night4 @ d-79.com or text 347-292-1433. Remember it is never too late! ROCHDALE VILLAGE COMMUNITY RELATIONS With State Senator James Sanders, Jr. and Senator Charles Schumer
HONORS WOMEN IN HEALTHCARE by Olayemi Okeniyi The month of March is a great time to commemorate the vital role women have played in America throughout the years. This March marks a particularly special Women’s History Month after two years of virtual acknowledgements and celebrations for women who have been working relentlessly during the pandemic. That is why the RV Community Relations Committee co-sponsored with Senator James Sanders Jr. along with Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer specifically decided to highlight outstanding women in healthcare as the focal point of their Women’s History Month Celebration. The event took place on Friday, March 25, 2022, in the Rochdale Village Grand Ballroom. The entire affair was made possible by the combined efforts of the Rochdale Village Community Relations Committee Chair Jean RandolphCastro and members, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Congressman Gregory Meeks, Assembly Member Vivian Cook, and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. According to Schumer, women are a big part of what make the country and city a great place. He went on to specifically commend those that worked on the frontlines during the pandemic: “Women in healthcare save lives every day, especially as frontline workers during the pandemic, so it is only fitting that we honor them during Women’s History Month,” Senator Sanders said. “Women are an important part of history and of our lives. They are often the backbone of
the family unit and globally provide strength in times of peril.” The three top winners were Phara Carolei, Program Director at Rochdale Village NORC, Radica Rampersaud, a Respiratory Therapist at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, and Jennifer A. Henry, Assistant Head Nurse at Health + Hospitals Queens. All received a framed proclamation and the Senate Commendation Award, which is a commemorative coin given in recognition of exceptional people who make lasting contributions to their community. All other nominees received a certificate of recognition. Entries came from hospitals, healthcare facilities, and providers from all over the district including Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, Queens Health + Hospitals, and The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center. The lively social celebration was corralled by Rev. Dr. Brenda Archer
who served as the Mistress of Ceremonies. Archer was supported by singer Jaden Gabb, International Dancer Za-man and his fusion dance troupe, and DJ Warren who infused the event with fun and musicality. Also in attendance, Sher r y Algredo, a longtime leader on education issues in south Queens and Chair of Community Board 9, who was awarded the Senator Sanders’ 2021 Woman of Distinction.

COMMUNITY AND COMMUNICATION How Rochdale Village Keeps Its 25,000 Residents Connected by Cynthia Bernadine Rochdale Village believes that staying connected is essential to keeping its residents abreast of all things good or bad happening in or around the community of Queens. Known as the “Jewel of Jamaica,” Rochdale Village has been the home to 25,000 shareholders within 20 buildings spread out over 120 acres of land for almost 60 years. Therefore, communication is not only key but also extremely important. Rochdale Village has several ways of communicating to its residents. This system takes into account the intergenerational buildup of its residents and tries to communicate in ways that appeals to residents of different demographics. Each building is equipped with digital screens, located in each section as well as in every laundry room. These screens provide up to date information about activities and events in Rochdale. For the more traditional residents, Rochdale publishes a monthly news-
paper and biweekly newsletter. Copies of both the Rochdale Village Bulletin Newspaper, as well as the Rochdale Village Weekly Sheet are delivered directly to each unit once published. Not satisfied to rest on laurels, Rochdale also connects with residents through social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and much more are being utilized. This has proved an effective tool for hearing from the community as well as disseminating invaluable information. To ensure that all bases are covered Rochdale Village also has an emergency alert system, which residents can, sign up for free to receive a text, email, or call with vital information. Rochdale Village is known for its above average population of seniors a.k.a. the young at heart, living amongst us. Rochdale Village ensures that this vulnerable population can communicate easily in case of an emergency with eCare, formally known as Are You Okay (R.U.O.K.), a community
call reassurance system. eCare is an automated phone communication that calls seniors and homebound residents to ensure their well-being. Residents sign up for this free service and the system makes a call at the desired time of day. The resident is instructed to acknowledge the call using the “press 1” option on the phone keypad. If the call is not answered or the person does not acknowledge the call, an alert is initiated that calls or email the emergency contact as well as Rochdale Village Public Safety Department. Rochdale Public Safety will then attempt to call the resident as well as do a wellness check to the unit. Rochdale Village is the World’s second largest cooperative with many moving pieces. So keeping the residents informed can sometimes be a daunting task. However, having many forms of communication lines open and readily available helps build a stronger community and connection within.

On Friday, March 25, 2022, Rochdale’s Community Relations Committee co-sponsored with Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator James Sanders Jr. hosted a beautiful event to honor women in healthcare in the Rochdale Village Grand Ballroom (story on top of page 18). As always, the Rochdale Village Public Safety officers were there on arrival to receive both Senators while providing technical information and physical assistance to their security details. Security work, when executed perfectly, is necessary
background work that often goes unnoticed, but for Rochdale’s Public Safety Captain, Ernest Gaither that is the job. Ensuring the security and well-being of all who live and visit the Rochdale campus is always first priority. The efforts of Public Safety over countless visits by Schumer to Rochdale did not go unnoticed. Schumer stated that whenever he comes to Rochdale, he always feels comfortable and safe. He decided to show his appreciation by presenting Public Safety Captain Gaither
with a commemorative coin (above) for his and the department’s continuous efforts. Rochdale Board Chairman and Public Safety Chair Clifton Stanley Diaz stated, “I am overly impressed by the job performance of Captain Gaither since joining the Rochdale Village Public Safety Department. The recognition from Senator Schumer to Captain Gaither is well deserved”. Inscribed on the coin, “Dignitary Protection Division,” and that says it all.
