NURTURE NATURE
One element that should adorn the itinerary of every visitor to Western Australia is the beach. Abundant sunshine, clear turquoise sea and 12,500km of the whitest beaches can be found around the states extensive stretch of coast as well as its many islands and archipelagos.
While Western Australia covers one third of the Australian continent, over half of the nation’s biodiversity hotspots thrive there.
Perth alone boasts a choice of 19 stunning beaches, including the iconic Cottesloe Beach. The far north is blessed with the world-famous Indian Ocean sunsets of Cable Beach, and the south boasts Australia’s whitest beach, Lucky Bay . That’s not forgetting the idyllic island getaways, luxury cruising escapes and sailing adventures that lie in-between.
The state’s forests evolved in geographic isolation, hence much of its flora and fauna is found nowhere else on Earth including of the State’s 12,000 species of wildflowers. The national parks of Perth, Dryandra and the South West offer windows to these unique forest habitats, not to mention rare Australian wildlife and one of the world’s 36 biodiversity hotspots.
AUTHENTIC OUTBACK ADVENTURE
LIFE IN THE OCEAN
Western Australia is about half the size of Europe but it’s the sheer diversity of other-worldly landscapes and outback adventures on offer are truly mind-blowing. Mother Nature has sculpted some of the world’s most magnificent rock formations in Western Australia, from the Pinnacles to the Bungle Bungle Range.
Along 12,500 kilometres of mainland coastline, as well as islands and archipelagos, you’ll encounter some of the most diverse marine environments on Earth. Gaze in awe through your snorkel mask or a glass-bottom boat at the breathtaking marine life. Grab a once-in-a-lifetime close encounter with wild dolphins, turtles, manta rays and the biggest fish in the ocean – the gentle whale shark. Witness one of greatest whale migrations on the planet. Or venture beyond the sanctuary zones and enjoy some world-class boat, beach and big-game fishing.
Head north into the heart of the last true wilderness area on Earth, the Kimberley. Follow the legendary Gibb River Road through iconic gorge and cattle country and enjoy some country hospitality at one of the many homesteads and outback stations. Venture east from Perth to the wide-open desert landscapes, shimmering salt lakes and gold rush ghost towns of the real Wild West of Australia - Kalgoorlie. Take an indigenous tour and marvel at a vast array of Australian animals, from kangaroos to the tiny endangered, big-eared bilby.
In fact, one of 18 global hotspots of coral reef diversity stretches hundreds of kilometres from World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef (the world’s largest fringing reef) and Shark Bay, to Rottnest Island near Perth.
WHET YOUR APPETITE
SAMPLE A CITY
Being one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world, it’s no surprise that Western Australia produces such a profusion of fresh local flavours, succulent seafood, worldclass wines and highly prized black truffles.
Towns and cities have plenty to offer too. Western Australia’s capital, Perth, is four hours closer to the UK than Sydney and the sunniest city in Australia. Broome is famous for its pearling history and dramatic sunsets at Cable Beach. The historic port town of Fremantle is just a short boat ride from car-free Rottnest Island, while Margaret River has become a centre for gourmet food and wine experiences.
Home to nine sensational wine regions, including the worldrenowned Margaret River and the state’s oldest wine growing region, the Swan Valley, tasting tours of the cellar doors are perfectly paired with amazing restaurants and award-winning boutique breweries. Perth alone has more restaurants per capita than any other capital city in Australia, many of which have been awarded for their commitment to food excellence, and the cities bar scene is equally as diverse and impressive.
PERTH
Perth effortlessly blends urban cool with raw natural beauty and makes the perfect base for your unique Western Australian experience. Long celebrated as one of the world’s prettiest and most liveable cities, world-class dining and entertainment sit side by side with clear turquoise beaches, just a 15-minute drive from the CBD! Or take the scenic route via the Swan River, on a cruise from Barrack Street Jetty. In the evening, suggest selecting from Fremantle’s eclectic mix of bars and restaurants, or taking the 15-minute drive to Cottesloe Beach for dinner beside an Indian Ocean sunset. DAY 2 |
ROTTNEST ISLAND
Heading to Perth’s idyllic island playground – a car-free, Class-A Reserve known as Rottnest Island, or ‘Rotto’, as it’s known by the locals – is a must do.
