Mike’s legacy for Kawana

The Tweed Heads Ospreys’ Bowls Premier League (BPL) dynasty is now complete, claiming the #BPL13 title to make it their third championship in four events. The Ospreys were the dominant side all week at #BPL13 at Club Pine Rivers, dropping just one match on their way to winning the trophy and $25,000 cheque. They join the Sydney Lions as the most successful BPL franchise, with three titles each. Taking on the Murray Steamers in a semi-final, the Ospreys managed their way through to the grand final thanks to some Aaron Teys magic. Earlier in the night, home-team Brisbane Pirates were bundled out in straight sets by a dominant Lions outfit. Ryan Bester was on song in the preliminary final against the Lions, steering his side into a second final in three events. The Ospreys capped off an unbelievable week, with a thumping win over the Steamers in the final to make it back-to-back titles with scores of 12-2, 7-1.
The Mike Stevenson Memorial Men’s Fours was held at Kawana Waters on March, 27-28. The tournament attracted many former world, Australian and Queensland representatives. All up there were 28 teams for the event, with three games of 18 ends played per day.
As a long-term member of the club, ‘Stevo’ was honoured and remembered as a lovable larrikin who will be sorely missed. He was an avid bowler, had served as a selector and was involved in many aspects of the club.
On his passing, Mike generously bequeathed a substantial amount of money to the club to be used for specific purposes. He had stipulated his request to attract Kurt Brown back to the club as the bowls manager and part of the Premier League Team. Brett Wilkie (BQ’s CEO) was humbled by Mike’s request that he also come over to the club. Brett had known Mike from playing at Kawana and had played against him in the State Championships. Mike’s legacy also helped to attract Ryan Burnett and Katelyn Inch to compete for the club. In addition to attracting the new players, money was allocated towards lighting for the greens and different social events to be held within the club at various levels.
Mike’s legacy has been great for the club to help promote the game and take the financial burden off the club in certain areas. The memorial event proved a great weekend for

everyone to come together to celebrate Mike’s kind gesture. Teams came from Cairns, Bundaberg, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sydney to support this event and play against some of Australia’s top bowlers.
