From the President
Thursday Island celebrates new green
with BQ’s Peter Williamson
It has been rather a busy month with the
North Versus South series being hosted by the Suburban Bowls Club in Townsville, culminating in a win for the Ladies and Men’s sides from the South. Prior to the commencement of play, I was given the opportunity to roll the first bowl (thanks to all for the applause) to open the newly replaced green after the severe flood damage. I travelled further north with Vice President Kerry Green and CEO Brett Wilkie to Thursday Island to attend the opening of the Des Murfet Green, opened by Silen David. There was a very moving ceremony that was duly attended by members of the bowls club and community. Those present were TFNQ District President Bernie Wolland and members, Weipa Bowls Club team and a representative of Cairns Sport and Recreation Dept. It was an honour to be asked to speak at the proceedings. On behalf of the bowls community, I’d like to extend a vote of thanks to President Russell Hubbard and your members for the commitment to making your club a place for community enjoyment. The friendliness and welcome given to us was overwhelming. The generosity of Moama Bowls Club in supplying the synthetic surface has allowed the bowls club the ability to provide for both the young and not so young, giving them a chance to become more competitive in the sport.
Queensland’s most northern club, Thursday Island Bowls Club, opened its new ‘Des Murfet’ green last month after its recent renovation from a rubber playing surface to a new synthetic green, which was graciously donated by Moama Bowls Club. The event was attended by BQ President Peter Williamson, Vice President Kerry Green and CEO Brett Wilkie and was opened by Des’s widow Silen David. “It was fantastic and because of the new green our competitions are now full and people are really loving it,” Thursday Island President Russell Hubbard said. “We have around 390 social members and 20 paying members but we expect that to grow now because of the green. “Thursday Island is a great little club run by volunteers and we have such strong support from our community too, I’d like to also say thanks to both Moama and Danny Keating who helped us with sourcing the green. “We also thank Sea Swift as well who shipped the green from Cairns to Thursday Island and everyone who installed the green for us as well as all of the other hardworking volunteers and businesses who assisted the club.”
We were able to hold informal talks in Townsville and Cairns with members from the regions as well as one on one during these events. We returned to Brisbane for one day and then it was straight down to Tweed Heads Bowls Club that hosted the State Pennant finals. Broadbeach Ladies defeated a gallant Bargara side in the women’s final. The men’s final came down to the wire and finished when Enoggera was overrun in the last few ends to be defeated by Tweed Heads Bowls Club. Congratulations to all who have participated in Qld events. I’d like to wish all bowlers, staff, committee and board members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you all for your support and hard work.

CEO REPORT with BQ’s Brett Wilkie School Bowls
Australian Championships
RBM’s Wade, Micheal and I met with Steven Murray of QLD School Sport recently to discuss getting more schools involved with trying bowls. He advised us we need to grow bowls through the school districts and then regions for them to take it on as a state sport. They look after 21 sports of which they select teams to go to national events etc. He said it is up to us to link with schools, and that the teachers/principles are the key to get on board. He recommended reaching out to schools districts where there are bowls clubs and try to get schools to play each other. There are 144 school districts in QLD and 12 regions. He said it is a long process and some areas will be keener than others. He offered to email regions to advise them of our meeting and our desire to get more involved by growing the link between bowls and schools at grass roots. The Australian Schools Super Series has gained interest from the Australian School Sport Association if they can get another state involved, Tasmania have shown interest.
Our State Champions from May in Singles, Pairs, Mixed Pairs, Triples and Fours head to Club Sapphire in Merrimbula NSW to represent QLD in the Australian Championships from December, 2-6 - good luck to all
This then comes back to clubs linking with schools, RBM’s will help assist in this area. The clubs then need volunteers to assist with this program and then create a regular session to attract the juniors back to the club after school. Even if the students don’t take the game up straight away, they have still been exposed to our sport. North vs South Challenge This event was a great success once again in Townsville at the Suburban Bowling Club. Thank you to the North QLD DBA/DLBA and the Suburban Club for their assistance in preparing for and running this event. Thank you to Brett Tynan and Exodas Transport, North QLD DBA/DLBA, Suburban BC, Thuringowa BC and Mercure Townsville for their sponsorship of this event. Thank you to all who attended the forum held in Townsville and the meet and greet in Cairns for the valuable feedback provided. Thursday Island BC Peter Williamson, Kerry Green and I had the pleasure of attending the opening of Thursday Island’s new green courtesy of a QLD Government Grant and carpet donated by Moama BC. Well done to Russell Hubbard and all the volunteers at the club for what they have achieved, this is the most northern bowls club in Australia and a beautiful part of the world. Thank you to Mal Mackney for assisting me with a Coaching Clinic at the club. State Pennant Finals Thank you to Tweed Heads Bowls Club for hosting the State Division 1 Pennant finals and for also winning the men’s title, well done to Broadbeach who won the women’s event for the fourth time in five years. BPL10 Congratulations to the Tweed Heads Ospreys for winning BPL10 on debut in the event at Club Pine Rivers. This event was a great promotion for our game once again with four nights of live TV, well done to Club Pine Rivers and Bowls Australia.

Australian Representatives Well done to the Australian Jackaroos in the MultiNations and Trans-Tasman Test Series held on the Gold Coast during November, well done to host clubs Broadbeach, Musgrave Hill and Club Helensvale on hosting a great event. Nathan Rice – International Retirement Congratulations to Nathan Rice for a remarkable international career representing Australia for 16 years. I have been lucky enough to share many of these experiences with Nathan and wish him and his family all the best for the future. Also to Karen Murphy who has announced her retirement, what a fantastic career and legacy she has left for women’s bowls. QLD Sporting Hall of Fame and Awards Kelvin Kerkow has been bestowed the honour of being inducted into the QLD Sporting Hall of Fame. Kelvin will be the second bowler to join the illustrious list of sports men and women. Well done Kelvin on a fantastic bowling career. Congratulations to Jake Fehlberg who was named a finalist in the QLD Sport Awards - Athlete with a Disability of the Year category. Toowoomba Fours Carnival I travelled to the Toowoomba City Bowls Club for their first men’s fours carnival in many years with a BQ team of Kerry Green, Brian Marshall and Stu Taylor. Well done to the club on a great carnival and to Brett Murphy’s team of Ben Twist, Chris Herden and Geoff Rymer for winning the event. Vale Gordon Williams Bowls Queensland and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Gordon, an esteemed member of Fraser Coast District Bowls Assoc. He was a winner of many district titles and member of the District Sides rep team for many years. Over the years, Gordon played with some of the best bowlers around and made great friends throughout the Queensland playing in some of the best carnivals. Our thoughts are with Gordon’s wife Lyn, his family and bowling friends throughout the State. I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, enjoy the time with your family and friends, stay safe over the holiday period and all the best for the New Year ahead. Brett Wilkie
QUEENSLAND ADDS TO TROPHY HAUL Queensland reigned supreme at the 2019 Australian Senior Sides Championships, claiming the Glyn Bosistio MBE Overall and Betty Collins OAM Women’s trophies.
Queensland Senior Sides Team
The trophy haul continued the state’s dominant month across all demographics of the sport, having also claimed all three trophies on offer at the Australian Under-18 Championships. It was the Queensland women who stole the headlines at the Sides by following a dominant week, seeing through the seven rounds without tasting defeat, quite the rare achievement. This is their fourth title in five years. Their male counterparts also performed strongly, finishing third in the Men’s Overall standings, with narrow losses to WA and VIC costing them a chance of winning the event. New South Wales’ six wins saw the blue team claim the John Dobbie AM Men’s trophy. Gold Coast’s Robbie Allan was named player of the series for the Queensland men while Sunshine Coast’s Louise Witton was awarded the women’s. The collective effort by the Maroons was evident by the fact they had all of their skips ranked within the top-six across both the male and female best-performed standings. - Men’s The Men’s Gold medal match promised a close battle and as if to the script, the players delivered. Red Hill’s Ben Walsh and Booval Swifts Glen Pitts staged one of the most captivating encounters for the Queensland Champion of Club Champions title in many years and much more. Pitts got away to a flying start and it took all the resolve that Ben Walsh could muster, to weather the storm. After an even start at 4 all, Pitts powered his way to a 13 – 4 led and seemingly on track for a big win.
Men’s Silver Singles Winner Group 2 Glen Pitts, Swifts
Walsh regathered and slowly pegged back the lead, end by end, to the point that the game was levelled at 14 all. Both players then exchanged end for end to tally 18 all, before Walsh took the jack into the ditch with Pitts holding two shots and then followed up with a deft touch to reverse the score to two shots his way and a 20-18 lead. This was like a punch to the solar plexus for Pitts and he never really recovered. Walsh stole another two shots, conceded a shot then played some wonderful draw bowls to close out the match 25-19. The Men’s Bronze medal match was a contrast and became all one way traffic early. Broadbeach young gun, Sean Ingham, had too much firepower for Proserpine’s Michael Kinnear to claim the match and the medal. Ingham shot away to a 6-0 lead early, doubled that score very quickly to lead 12-1 and then continued to power away to convincing 25-5 victory.
Men’s Bronze Singles Winner Group 1 Sean Ingham, Broadbeach
- Women’s In one of the most enthralling Women’s Gold Medal finals, rising Australian young talent Chloe Stewart from Tweed Heads held her nerve against experienced campaigner Liz Parry to capture a unique double at the tournament. After grabbing gold in the Women’s Fours played over the weekend, Stewart withstood the early pressure applied by Parry before turning the tables when it most mattered. Parry jumped to a 6-3 lead but Stewart steadied to level at 6-all. It then became a procession of one shot ends with the flow changing as much as the breezy conditions. Parry again took the lead 9-7 but a decisive two shot end to Stewart levelled the match a nine all and then the youngster poked her nose in front to lead 12-11. Then, not once, but twice, Stewart killed the end with Parry holding shot and then claimed a four to lead 16-11. This rocked Parry but she displayed years of experience to slowly come back to trail 16-15 before Stewart again surged away to 17-15. Then against the trend, Stewart claimed another brilliant four shot end and the Parry challenge was thwarted. 10 queensland bowler December/January 2020
Two shots on the next two ends to Stewart secured the Gold Medal 25-15, a margin that belied the closeness of the contest. A captivated crowd were at times held breathless, as both players put on a display of lawn bowls never seen in Toowoomba before this year’s tournament. In the Bronze Medal match, Hervey Bay’s Wendy Jamieson had to produce top quality bowls to overcome a determined Trish Spicer of Marlin Coast, 25-18. After trading shots early, Jamieson went out to a solid 16-11 lead and then applied the ‘screws’ to lead 24-12, but to Spicer’s credit, she never took a backward step and closed the gap to just six shots. It was only an unlucky brush of the jack that denied her the chance of a three to extend the match even further. Jamieson drew a breath of relief to take the shot and seal the match. Mother Nature played her part by turning on perfect Spring conditions for the week in the Garden City of Toowoomba and it was only a tricky NW breeze that caused any complications for the players.

Pairs - Men’s The Club Helensvale combination of Andrew Howie and Nathan Rice surged to an impressive Gold medal victory in the pairs final. Howie and Rice didn’t have things all their own way, up against Hamilton’s John Newell and Jason Moore. Howie and Rice took an early 9-5 lead but Howell and Moore fought back to level at nine all and levelled again at 12 all before the Helensvale combination clicked to shoot to an 18-12 lead after 14 ends. It was then shot for shot, with Howell and Moore trying to narrow the lead but Howie and Rice held firm to close out the contest 24-14. The standard of bowls was first class as an enthralled crowd followed the action.

In the Bronze medal match, Bribie Island survived a huge comeback by Southern Suburbs Mackay to win 24-19 after Bribie led 20-6 after 12 ends.

Their path to the final didn’t make it any easier to pick a pre-game favourite with both clubs progressing undefeated; Tweed Heads margin was +135 with wins against Jubilee, Swifts and Emerald, whilst Enoggera won their 3 sectional
matches against Pialba, Dalby and Boyne Tannum with a margin of +137. The Enoggera Eagles hit the ground running with Steven Tong leading Kelvin Kerkow, Brendan Egan to get an early lead on Wayne Turley whilst Kurt Brown (Tweed) was holding his own against Jamie Anderson. At the ¾ mark in the match you could sense a change in the air; five shots to Kelvin Kerkow and the Tweed Heads crowd were up off their seats generating a bit of noise. They had a bird’s eye view of the six shots Wayne Turley’s rink collected soon after to dramatically reduce Tweeds deficit - and all of a sudden the locals were looking confident. Another two solid ends from Kerkow’s crew picking up a two and three, along with a 3-shot pick-up to Kurt Brown on his final end and in the blink of an eye the Osprey’s were now three in front with one end remaining. It was fitting to be playing back in the direction of the clubhouse where 250+ spectators had gathered on the balcony to witness the most fabulous come-frombehind victory by a club on the rise in Queensland bowls.
After some clever positional bowls from Tweed Heads Enoggera managed just the one shot on that final end and the Tweed Heads Bowls Club started to rock! Like a football match, the pitch was invaded by Tweed Heads supporters, thrilled to see their club in the winner’s circle once more and absolutely delighted for their club mates who hung tough all match when it’s fair to say most had conceded they would have to settle for silver. “Considering we were about 19 shots behind at one point, it was a massive effort from the boys,” said an elated skipper Kurt Brown. “We knew we were in for a tough match, these boys (Enoggera) made the final last year and to be honest I’ve got no idea how the heck we came back,” he said. “How good are these spectators, they got right behind us and wow this title, a state title, is just a huge achievement for our club; good things are happening at Tweed Heads.”

Challenge It split the state in half in 2018 creating a friendly albeit competitive rivalry between the top players in the North and South of Queensland, the North v South Challenge returned again this year for its second edition giving both teams another opportunity to flex their muscles. Held at the beautiful Suburban Bowling Club in Townsville the two day event again showcased players from all regions of the Sunshine State. After last year’s coup the South looked to be the bookies’ favourites once more, although they faced stiff resistance from the North’s stacked team of battle hardened veterans. The first day of the series treated the combatants to great conditions which enabled them to really get a feel for Suburban’s newly renovated, covered and carpeted green which made for a fitting venue for this fledgling event. Test 1 gave both sides the opportunity to test and probe their opponents metal, in the men’s competition the South’s 12 man team were able to deal the opening blows with a clean sweep across the board despite an unrelenting North contingent. The tightest game played saw the North’s Tim Smith, Kevin Deegan, Justin Cribbin and skip Tony Williams just miss out to the South’s combo of Bradley Lawson, Mitchell Mears, Jacob Nelson under the command of Brett Wilkie in a quality opening 17-18 game. Test 1 for the women was a much tighter affair with the North claiming a rink win and

narrowing the overall score down to just a two shot difference over the three games to finish 54-52 in the South’s favour. Lucky for the South, Tong’s team of Rosannes, Turnbull and Pettigrew were the strongest rink and surged ahead by 10 points (27-17) in the second test to even the scores at 72-72, despite North’s Michael Kinnear, Mick Tobin, John See and Colin Kelly beating Wilkie’s team 35-23. The South’s women held on to their lead in test two with two rink wins and a final score of 64-51 thanks to the mighty efforts of Isabella Lawson, Neolene Dutton, Jane Bush and skip Pamela Fantini who were able to surge past seasoned fighters Denise Charman, Adele Pershouse, Terry McAlary and Wendy Ryan to finish 20 shots up in a 30-10 match, which secured the South’s women’s victory overall in the series. At the conclusion of day two the writing was already on the wall for the women’s competition, but it was still all to play for in the men’s series despite the South being up a test win and a half over the North. The third test saw the North’s women in damage limitation mode and a night’s rest had given them a renewed sense of energy, the North came out swinging in some hard fought battles to retain their pride. The North secured a 25-15 win on one rink and drew 16-16 on another, but the South’s Pauline Laverty, Jo Stockdale, Heather Hodgson, Dee-Anne Robertson changed the game’s narrative with a 29-14 over Wendy Ryan to enable the South to win 61-54 overall and lock in their third test win of the series.
Meanwhile in the battle for the men’s third test the well oiled North machine seemed to fall apart losing on all three rinks to finish 21 shots behind the South who ended the third test on 73-52. Bowls Queensland CEO Brett Wilkie said it had been a privilege to take part in the prestigious event and was pleased to see such a high standard of competition across the board. “It was really great to see bowling talent represented from across the State, I think this event is provides players with a high level competition and really helps develop their skills as athletes,” Wilkie said. “I think we put on a great show for spectators both at the club and online watching the live stream and I’m already looking forward to next year’s event.”

Moore Park Beach bowlers bowl on! Relieved and happy. That’s how the bowlers at Moore Park Beach near Bundaberg felt when their club re-opened after being forced into voluntary liquidation. There were financial difficulties for a long time then finally the doors closed and the liquidators moved in on June, 16. Weeks of uncertainty followed as rumours circulated about debts and the club’s future and the liquidators worked through their processes. “It could have been the end,” Chairman Lindsay Browne said. “However, frantic negotiations were going on with creditors, the liquidators and the council and many others to see what could be salvaged and whether we could somehow carry on.
“We managed to keep bowls going during this period with only toilet access to the premises allowed and BYO refreshments. “Thanks to the hard work of a whole lot of people we’ve managed to form a new committee, incorporate a new association, get a new liquor license and thanks to our volunteers we got up and running again. “Our members and the community have been great and we thank them for their support. We are optimistic about our future. We want all our friends who have visited us over the years to know that things were grim there for a while but we are definitely open for business and we look forward to seeing them again.” Moore Park Beach enjoys near perfect yearround sub-tropical temperatures and has 17 kilometres of pristine beach. It’s a small community where the bushland meets the sea
20 kilometres north-east of Bundaberg. For those looking to escape the overly developed coastal centres, it’s an absolute haven. Contact Moore Park Bowls Club at (07) 41598326 for more information.

Fun, laughter, friendship and good bowls were the call for this year’s Dalby Ladies Two Day Carnival on October, 14-15. Ladies from Kawana, Toowoomba, Pittsworth and the Condamine District met at the Dalby Club to renew friendships and vie for one of the seven paying prizes. Last year, players were praying that the rain would hold off long enough to get the games finished and yet this year, the prayers were for rain to come down in buckets. Dalby is still waiting for the rain. With a late withdrawal of one team there was a desperate scrounge to keep the numbers even and with only three ladies available, the Ladies Executive called on the Dalby men to step up to the mat and fill the position. The only brave gentleman was Jim Rynne, who came dressed accordingly, in his wife’s clothes, together with a lady’s wig and even lipstick, so that he wouldn’t stand out and would blend with the crowd. Jim’s efforts were accepted with appreciation and good fun. Jim played the day under the pseudonym of Jenny Wrenn. The overall winners were Kawana, skipped by Noela Whitton together with Evon Woodward, Mel Spence and Merril Kerss. Dalby runners-Up was the team skipped by Diana Buckley together with Lorna Strong, Beth Brown and Heather Bradley. The Encouragement Award, donated by Black Toyota was won by the Pittsworth team skipped by Jane Muggleton, together with M Hughes, M Mitchell and A Blinco. Round wins went to the teams skipped by Sue Slatter, Bev Watkins, Wendy Adcock, Thelma Cooper and lastly, Joy Pauli’s team which had the ring in. The Dalby Ladies would like to take this opportunity to thank all Financial Sponsors and all business houses who donated unstintingly so that the carnival could go ahead and be the success it was.

North Toowoomba Bowls Club need your help! After a gut wrenching defeat in the recent elimination finals for a place in next year’s South East Queensland Bowls Premier League, the North Toowoomba Bushrangers have received a reprieve and a late invitation to submit a registration following the shock withdrawal of longtime competitors South Tweed and Booval Swifts Ipswich. Having to field two sides; 12 players for the Premier Division and a 16 strong team for the Second Division, the race is now on to find players to fill the 28 player requirement for each weekend of the 11 game series, commencing with a double header at the Bushrangers home base on the weekend January, 11-12 2020.

The club is seeking expressions of interest from players outside of the club who can commit for most of the 8-week competition. Obviously there will be a need for those players, both men and women, to become an affiliate member of North Toowoomba to ensure they qualify under the rules of the QPL competition. North Toowoomba Premier League Media & Sponsorship Manager, Peter Rookas, said the opportunity for bowlers in the region wanting to reach the heights of top grade bowls competition is now available. “We have a core of 16-20 experienced players capable of playing at Premier Division level but we need 28 each week,” he said. “Queensland representative Robbie Hammond will bring a group from Roma each week and we have players from Dalby and Northern

Marian Bowls club members hosted a Come and Try day By Joan Vickers Despite being a small club of only 40 active members we had thirty people turn up for a go on our Come & Try day. Among those who attended were children from 10 years upwards, young adults, mums and dads and several older people who came for a look and see and ended up rolling a few bowls. It was a very relaxed and casual morning where people were able to come and try, but were not pressured to be part of a team game. After a couple of hours of bowls, everyone enjoyed a free sausage sizzle and some then went back to have more fun before leaving the club. The outcome of the morning was that there was no pressure to join the club, just to come and see and enjoy the morning and maybe in the future take up the sport. Several people were interested in more information on the Junior Bowlers Club, so maybe we had a future champion in our midst.

been doing? Marlin Coast Women Proud to be at Pennants By Colleen Thompson Whilst our women were unsuccessful in winning the State Pennant Finals in Tweed Heads last month, the Marlin Coast Bowls Club were very proud of their achievement in earning their way to the finals. Clubs in Far North Queensland are often small and to have won the District Finals, the Zone Playoffs and to progress to the State Finals was incredible. The strong winds at Tweed Heads were challenging but these women, with an average age of 71 years, are stayers and even when the odds were against them, they carried on and played their hearts out. Four of our women played in the Fours at Toowoomba the end of October after playing their way into the Champion of Club Champions. And we must not forget our pocket rocket, Trish Spicer.
Trish Spicer
Trish played in the Ladies A Grade Singles Champion of Club Champions, then a few days later played in the State Pennant Finals. All these ladies hail from one small club tucked away in the Northern Beaches of Cairns. I must also add that to participate in these events it costs money, lots of money. The Cairns Mayor’s Discretionary fund kindly donated $500 as did the Trinity Beach Tavern. We were very grateful for these donations. The bulk of the costs were raised by the ladies themselves with fund raisers such as Breaky and Bowls, a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, a Cent Sale, selling of homemade lollies and many, many raffles.

It’s Celebration time at Kallangur Memorial Bowls Club By Debbie Henricksen Members of the Kallangur Memorial Bowls Club are celebrating the renewal of their lease with Moreton Bay Regional Council despite many rumours that the club had already closed. Kallangur remains a proud club and has been operating since 1966.
Like many other bowls clubs, Kallangur has faced financial difficulty. In 2012 the Council agreed to purchase the property to cover the club’s debts and lease the property back to the club on an ongoing five yearly renewal basis. The most recent lease was signed on April, 28 2015 and expires April, 27 2020. With this new security and peace of mind, the club obtained Government Grants and over $200,000 worth of improvements were made to the premises with a large part of the work being done by club members volunteering their time. The club continued to grow and flourish. The club faced issues in March 2017 when the Council published a notice in the Courier Mail asking for expressions of interest to purchase the property where the club stands. This was the first that the board and members had heard of the Council’s intentions to sell the land, even though the club’s lease would not expire until April 2020. A spokesperson for the club at the time stated “we were of the opinion there was an amicable working relationship between both parties.” “The club is not in financial difficulty and last year the number of members at the club had increased by 12% men and 28% women.” He also pointed out the quality and the value of the improvements the club had made to the premises. With a petition of 1519 signatures, great support of the local community and Division 7 Councillor Denise Sims, “Kallangur Save Our Club” fought City Hall, so to speak and won, when councillors voted not to proceed with the sale of the Club.
Ladies Fours: Noelene Newton, Edna Parkes, Linda McCarthy & Jill Kefford
In May 2019, knowing that the lease was due for renewal in 2020, a committee was formed to go through the application process. “We knew it was more than just filling out an application form,” Committee Chairperson Ros Clark said. “Our team put in a lot of effort to gather information and letters of support to point out the features of the club and its benefit both the bowlers and wider community.” At a recent visit to the club, Mayor Alan Sutherland said that upgrades and renovations to the club over the last three years made it a vibrant place to be. “The impressive maintenance of the greens is also a real credit to the club’s management,” he said. “It also explains why the club’s function room is in such hot demand for everything from office parties and birthdays, to club meetings and community networking. “Kallangur Bowls Club was so much more than just a bowls club. It is a community hub for a range of local groups, providing them with an important meeting space to socialise and pursue their interests” When the lease renewal was approved, Mayor Sutherland and Division 7 Councillor Sims visited the
club once again. The new Lease document was presented by Councillor Sims to Chairman Bill Evans. Other Board members and members of the Lease Renewal Committee were there to see their efforts come to a successful conclusion. The Chairman acknowledged the support shown by club members and members of the local community and in particular Councillor Sims. Now, with the lease renewed for a further five years, until April 2025, the club can continue to play an active part and supply much needed facilities within the wide area of the Moreton Bay region. We are definitely open for business, in fact, we never closed. We will continue to compete successfully in the Moreton Bay District, Zone and State competitions. Our weekly Ladies and Men’s games, Club Competitions, Social Bowls and Barefoot Bowls are in full swing. We heartily welcome members of other clubs to come and enjoy our top-class grass greens and club facilities. Kallangur Memorial Bowls club is situated at 1351 Anzac Avenue, Kallangur. 28 queensland bowler December/January 2020
Recently I travelled to Southern Cross Bowling Club in Warwick to take part in the special day in our district for our SuperVets. This year was particularly special because we were able to celebrate this day with our male SuperVets for the first time. It was a lovely day for bowlers to catch up with old friends, as well as create an opportunity for new bowlers to spend time with many stalwarts of the bowling family without whom many of our clubs would not exist. Thank you to our matriarchs, patriarchs, SuperVets and their carers for participating in this important event. Thanks must also go to our hosts Southern Cross Bowling Club for their beautiful morning tea and lunch, great hospitality, greenkeeper, bar staff and the women who worked tirelessly in the kitchen. I am looking forward to seeing you all next year at the SuperVets 2020.

OSPREYS SOAR TO DEBUT BPL CHAMPIONSHIP By Lachlan Williams BPL10 saw the return of an Adelaide team and the emergence of the Tweed Heads Ospreys & Melbourne Pulse, with all three sides enjoying a successful debut, none better than the Ospreys who claimed the BPL10 title at Club Pine Rivers. The Ospreys were the best side all week, topping the ladder during the group stage and working their way through to the grand final against the heavily-fancied Sydney Lions. The two sides met not long before the grand final in a qualifying game to reach the decider, with the Lions showing their class in a 6-5 6-5 victory to advance to the grand final. The Ospreys then met the Melbourne Pulse in the preliminary final, after the new side knocked off the Perth Suns in an elimination final earlier in the evening. The Pulse were competitive early on, drawing the first set 3-3 before Aaron Teys and the Ospreys let loose, controlling the second set to win 9-0 and claim the match. The Lions and Ospreys met once again in the grand final, but it was a much different story this time. Tournament MVP Teys had everything go his way in the first set, tackling the brilliance of Aron Sherriff head on as the Ospreys took out the first set 8-1 after just four ends. The Lions would have hoped of a strong start to the second set, but failed to make an impact as the Ospreys placed on hand on the trophy with a five-shot first end. Tweed Heads built on that lead throughout the set, eventually winning 9-0 and claiming the title in their maiden BPL campaign.
“The first game was pretty damn scary. They got the mat, went long and I didn’t handle it very well,” Teys said. “When we got the mat we went short and that seemed to work in the final. It was a tough game. I got a lot of maximum results, I got a bit of luck in a few areas.” Teys was recognised for his outstanding efforts during the week, landing 30 of a possible 42 votes to take out the tournament MVP. Tweed Heads coach Wayne Turley said it was “amazing” to have won tournament in the club’s first attempt. “Full credit to the board for supporting us and putting us into one of the world’s best events. It is a dream come true to win it,” he said. “Going forward, being part of the BPL is huge for the club, it will allow us to market to a different audience and try to bring new people to the club.” Turley said he was rapt with the way Teys, Chloe Stewart and Kurt Brown worked together throughout the week and the finals. “We struggled in our first final (against Sydney). We made a few adjustments and played well against the Pulse and maintained that momentum for the final. They worked really well together,” he said. The Ospreys took home $25,000 in prizemoney for their victory at BPL10.

2019 multi-nations gold rush for the jackaroos
The BCiB Australia Jackaroos performed strongly at the 2019 Multi-Nations, medalling in every discipline possible as preparations continue ahead of next year’s World Bowls Championships. Between Australia Gold and Green, the two teams secured six gold (from a possible eight), four silver and four bronze medals, including both Singles crowns to kick-start a gold rush on the final day. Ray Pearse and Ellen Ryan defeated Gary Kelly (Ireland) and Kelly McKerihen (Canada) respectively in the first session of play, before a couple of retiring greats ensured a bumper finish to the event. Nathan Rice (Australia Gold – Men’s Fours) picked up a gold medal in his final match for the Jackaroos, with both Australian Fours teams pitted against each other in the final. In her second last representative game before her retirement, Karen Murphy produced a memorable last bowl to help Australia to the Women’s Pairs gold medal. 30 queensland bowler December/January 2020

Queenslander’s hands full at BA Awards night The best in Australian bowls were honoured at the end of October at the 2019 Bowls Australia Hall of Fame & Awards Night. Our Queenslanders were proudly represented and we walked away with some shiny new silverware. BCiB Australian Jackaroo Aron Sherriff was one of the biggest winners with two awards to his name, collecting his already announced Male Bowler of the Year and the International Male Bowler of the Year honour. It was his fifth International Bowler of the Year award from only nine ever awarded. Sherriff guided the Australian Jackaroos to two gold medals in the 2019 Asia Pacific Championships. Tweed’s Kira Bourke (QLD) was named Under-18 Female Bowler of the Year while Burleigh’s Jake Fehlberg was a finalist in the Disability of the Year award. Coach of the Year went to Alan Thorp (see page 38) and Club of the Year was awarded to Suburban BC, Townsville. With the best of 2019 awarded, a cast of individuals who have contributed to Australian bowls for many years were also recognised with Hall of Fame induction or elevation to Legend status. South Tweed’s Edda Bonutto and BQ CEO Brett Wilkie were the Queenslanders inducted into the Hall of Fame, while Queenslander Keith Poole earned elevation to become Legends of Australian bowls.

NATHAN RICE ANNOUNCES INTERNATIONAL RETIREMENT BCiB Australian Jackaroos veteran Nathan Rice has announced his international retirement, effective at the end of the 2019 Multi-Nations tournament held in November at Broadbeach. Rice, 40, made his debut for Australia in 2004, before going on to amass 271 caps across 16 years for his country, including three Commonwealth Games, one World Championship and four Asia Pacific Championships. Originally from Launceston and based at Club Helensvale since 2002, Rice has enjoyed a decorated international career, with four Commonwealth Games medals and two World Championship medals to his name, along with three Asia Pacific Championship gold medals, with the most recent coming at the 2019 edition on the Gold Coast. started calling me that because of the way I lurched around at work. What advice would you give to up and coming players? To be a good sport, respect your opposition and everyone around you. I like to treat people how I would like to be treated. It means a lot to have the respect of people around you. What will you miss the most? The honour of playing for Australia, knowing you are representing your country with 200,000 bowlers nationwide was always a dream come true and an honour. When I got the opportunity, I grabbed it with both hands and cherished every game as you never knew when it was going to be your last, as I always told myself “I’m living the dream”.

Mullins’ guide to advertising liquor promotions this festive season For many of us, the Christmas season is a time to celebrate with loved ones, often with a beer or wine in hand, so it was no surprise to me when I read a recent survey suggesting Australians’ average weekly alcohol intake triples over the Christmas period. No doubt many clubs will be looking to make the most of this time of year by promoting your club as the place for groups to meet – and drink – as the year draws to a close. So with that in mind, I thought it timely to recap the rules on advertising and promotion of alcohol. Your obligations The rules around promotion of liquor in Queensland are designed to minimise harm, maintain a safe environment for your patrons and staff, and to preserve peace and order in the neighbourhood around licensed premises. As a liquor licensee, you have a general obligation to practice and promote responsible drinking on your premises.
These types of specials may be advertised within the premises, so long as the advertisement is not visible or audible outside of the premises, including on the venue’s website or social media pages. Clubs should be particularly mindful of this if their websites or social media are managed by third parties who may not be aware of the restrictions around what can and cannot be advertised outside the premises. Exceptions – food and drink packages Despite the general prohibition on advertising outside the premises for drinks specials available at your venue, licensees may advertise “meal and drink” packages in the following circumstances: 1. A meal and one alcoholic drink up to 1.5 standard drinks; 2. A meal for two and a standard bottle of wine or champagne, in which case the meal must be eaten in a designated dining area on the premises; or
More specifically, licensed clubs must not advertise the following outside of the venue:
3. A package offering accommodation and a standard bottle of wine or champagne.
1. free liquor, or multiple quantities of liquor such as “two for one” deals;
In such cases, the alcohol is considered secondary to the meal or accommodation. However, it is important that the meal be substantial enough to be considered a proper meal; a package offering appetisers or a plate from the tapas menu would not be sufficient. Moreover, care should be taken to ensure that any such promotion outside the
2. the sale price of liquor for consumption on the premises; or 3. promotions offering discounted drinks such as “happy hour” or “all you can drink”.
premises does not hint at the possibility that other drinks specials may be available on the premises. We regularly work with Bowls Clubs and other venues to create or assist with management plans addressing the advertising, service and promotion of alcohol at their premises. These management plans are a helpful tool to ensure that your staff and relevant contractors, such as promoters and website developers, all know the legal obligations that you must satisfy when advertising alcohol and meal and drinks packages. Similar to a RiskAssessed Management Plan (RAMP), such management plans are kept on premises and given to all employees as part of their training.
If you require assistance to develop a management plan for your club, or if you have any other questions, then please do not hesitate to contact me on 07 3224 0353.

Improving the health of your club’s bank balance By Lesley Bates
A big part of our roles as Regional Bowls Managers is keeping members informed about what has been going on in our areas of Queensland. Recently, I sent a list of ideas to the clubs in my area to improve their bank balance health: •
•
Reviewing Rates Notices- A club realised they had been overcharged $14,000 for pedestals that had been removed several years ago but not signed off. An appeal was lodged and the Regional Council refunded this oversight on compassionate grounds. Grants- Solar panels installed with grant monies from Community Gambling led to huge savings on bills – the club is applying for a grant to install batteries to reduce costs even further.
the success stories from members and how it lightens the burden of fund raising and increases the morale of our volunteers. We also help introduce initiatives to clubs such as Roll Back the Clock, Jack Attack, Bowls Premier League, Sporting Schools and the Secondary School Cup so call us if you are interested in having these programs introduced at your venue. These were my goals for 2019: •
To increase the number and value of grants for my 82 clubs and 6 districts
•
Visit every club in my territory
•
Build successful relationships with members, districts, our sponsors, politicians, regional councils, federal and state bodies who can help and support our great sport
•
Bring events to the North
•
Electricity Audit- one revealed the freezer was using $1,000 in energy per year- off to the dump!
•
Recycling bottles and cans- money in clubs’ pockets and no longer need a skip bin. Become a community collection centre. Some clubs are donating the funds back to other community groups who are great supporters of their bowls clubs.
•
Encourage involvement by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
•
Organise coaching clinics with elite coaches
•
Increase the number of umpires and coaches
Review of Liquor Licence- one club requested that the security guard requirements be reassessed in view of the type of cliental that the club attracted resulting in less labour costs at functions.
•
Work with the other 16 Regional Bowls Managers in Australia and share ideas and experiences so we are better equipped for proactive support of our bowling members
These are a few initiatives that clubs have implemented so if you have any other tips, please send them to me to share with fellow members.
•
Showcase our sport by being involved in Expos and local festivals
I have visited so many clubs and districts who have never taken advantage of applying for grants as they are not computer savvy or think that they don’t qualify because they are too profitable. Please contact us to help with these applications. It gives me pride to hear of
•
Help nurture and encourage the next generations of bowlers.

Coaching across Queensland By Mal Mackney This is my first column for Queensland Bowler since my appointment to the State Coaching Committee. I am the TFNQ District Secretary and have been a district coach. I was truly honoured to be invited onto the State Coaching Committee this year and with Felix based in Mackay and myself in TFNQ, I feel that we have a committee that truly reflects the diversity of our state and also strives to work for the whole state. Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of travelling to Thursday Island as District Secretary/Treasurer, together with our District President Bernie Wolland to help Thursday Island Bowls Club celebrate the opening of their new surface and the extension of their green to full size. Together with Brett Wilkie, I helped present a skills evening which was very well received. It was also very interesting to hear Brett talk about his personal Preparation, Practice and Planning for games. Congratulations to Thursday Island on the great work they have done. This is a lovely place to visit and I would encourage anyone who can to make the effort to visit. To give you a bit of perspective of the size of our district, you might think it’s far when you fly from Brisbane to Cairns, but to get from Cairns to Thursday Island, you have a similar distance to fly to Horn Island plus a 40minute ferry ride to Thursday Island.
Thursday Island
We’ve also completed the following courses in the last couple of months: • Club Coach in Innisfail • Skills, Bowling Arm, Mental Skills in Tropical Far North Qld • Club Coach, Reaccreditations, Skills, Bowling Arm in Roma • Club Coach at Jindalee Bowls Club, Brisbane We also ran very successful Skills and Mental Skills Courses at South Johnstone and had more than 40 attendees.
Coach of the Year Alan Thorp (Thorpy)
Congratulations to our very own Alan Thorp who won the Coach of the Year award at the Bowls Australia Hall of Fame and Awards held on the Gold Coast. Thorpy was recognised for being the State Coaching Coordinator for Queensland and for his pivotal role in coaching the Queensland Multi-Disability team.
ECKA’S TIP I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a great 2020. Remember if you need some coaching see your club accredited coach rather than someone who is not accredited, as they will confuse you and they are probably the one that needs some coaching.
