LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD, PLAY GREAT! City Club’s commitment to crafting quality tailored pants and shorts spans over seven decades and three generations. From humble beginnings in 1952, housed above a small tailoring shop in Lismore NSW, the City Club brand was born.
The name City Club has been synonymous with quality, a reputation that has been earned through rigid manufacturing standards and strict quality control, and City Club bowls garments are no exception to this. There have been many changes within the sport of bowls over the decades and City Club has adapted along with the needs of the bowls community.
Bowls were originally composed from a dense wood, but are now made from a hard plastic composite material. The bias of the bowl has changed from being driven by weight inserts, to now being determined by the shape of the bowl. Bowls were once only available as black or brown, but now they are available in a variety of different colours and patterns. City Club has also evolved. At the turn of the century, the renowned City Club bowls creams were developed and they quickly became the benchmark of the bowls apparel industry. In 2007, City Club introduced a range of bowls tailored shorts and trousers in bright colours. The addition of colour revolutionised the Australian bowling landscape, and re-energised the sport of bowls. Although there have been many changes, many things we love about the sport remains constant. The social aspect and community spirit, the skilful technique of bowlers, and the love
of the game has endured. City Club shares that same passion, which is shown in the consistency and quality of each garment. Today, City Club bowls garments are cut for ease of movement and designed with highperformance in mind, while also retaining a smart appearance to fulfil bowls clothing etiquette. They are machine washable, wrinkle resistant, and quick drying. So, rest assured that when you choose a City Club bowls garment, it has been quality designed, developed and tested to give you the bowling edge!
Come and see us at the upcoming Australian Open! Broadbeach Bowls Club Trade Pavilion June 1-14, 2019

From the President with BQ’s Peter Williamson
Coming up! Are you readY for the BCiB State District Sides? May 8 to 11, 2019
A draft strategic plan was presented to the delegates at the recent BQ council meeting and whilst some changes will be made to the document, all suggestions will be looked at for inclusion. At the request of the board, coordinator of the BQ match committee, Ron Somerville, presented an outline of a new competition initiative. The competition, if agreed to by the clubs and districts will be implemented as a mixed eight (8) a side comprising of women’s pairs, men’s pairs and mixed fours. I wish to formally thank all the nominees for position as Directors on the Board of Bowls Queensland. Congratulations to Brian Marshall and Geoff Osborne on being re-elected to the board of management. To the unsuccessful applicants, do not be discouraged, continue to work for your districts and clubs as this is as important as being on board of BQ.
The BCiB State District Sides Championships is the marquee event on Queensland’s bowling calendar, with districts going head-to-head in separate men’s and women’s competitions. These teams battle it out for the chance to be crowned Queensland’s top bowling district with the women vying for the Val Woodward Perpetual Shield and men the Harry Wright Memorial Shield. Last year saw Gold Coast Tweed District take both shields, so what will happen this year? Will one of the favourites, the Sunshine Coast District take the title, or will it be a surprise? This year, the event will be hosted by Broadbeach Bowls Club, Club Helensvale, Mermaid Beach Bowls Club and Musgrave Hill Bowls Club.
It was a pleasant duty on behalf of the assembled delegates to present Ron Somerville the Bowls Queensland Life Members Award Badge at the AGM in the presence of board members and observers.
Held over four days, with approximately 550 players and team officials attending, the event is followed by the State Championships so May is the month to see top bowls from around Queensland.
The Junior State Championships commenced at The Waves Caloundra Bowls Club on April, 6 and it was extremely pleasing to see the contingent of 14 players from Cunnamulla as well as all other participants from across the state. BQ wishes to thank The Waves Caloundra and Pelican Waters clubs for hosting these championships, where our younger players have an opportunity to mix with their peers and learn from more experienced players. Ettalong Bowls Club in NSW hosted the Australian Sides that saw Queensland beaten on the first day and unable to catch NSW as the Blues went on to win both the Alley Shield and Marge Morris Trophy. The Qld sides stuck to the task and were able to compete at a high standard, winning through to secure both men’s and women’s second placing position.

CEO REPORT with BQ’s Brett Wilkie Australian Sides Championships
District Sides Championships
Well done to the Queensland men’s and women’s representative teams who both claimed silver in the Australian Sides Championships at Ettalong NSW.
Thank you to Domina BCIB for sponsoring the QLD District Sides once again this year. The Sides will be held from May, 8-11 on the Gold Coast at Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach, Musgrave Hill and Club Helensvale. I am looking forward to catching up with old friends and making new ones when our representative teams/players from across the state converge on the Gold Coast.
Congratulations to Jayden Christie, Jamie Anderson and Sean Ingham who carried me to be the best performed men’s rink for the tournament. Unfortunately, Nathan Rice was a late withdrawal due to personal reasons. Well done to Jacob Nelson who took Nathan’s place in the side. I’d like to make special mention of Bolivia Millerick’s rink of Cassandra Millerick, Pam Fantini and Dee-Anne Robertson who scored an eight versus Karen Murphy! Well done to both men’s and women’s teams for winning their pre-test series versus Tasmania prior to the Sides, winning three tests to nil to regain both perpetual shields.
QLD Junior State Championship Congratulations to all participants in the Junior State Championships and those lucky enough to win medals. Thank you to the Sunshine Coast Council and Bowlers Paradise for sponsoring this event and to The Waves Club Caloundra and Pelican Waters Bowls Clubs for hosting the Championships.
The Men’s qualifying was held on the last weekend in April; congratulations to those who qualified. Thank you to host venues Tweed Heads and Paradise Point.
QLD State Championships Club Helensvale will host all the finals for this year’s State Championships from May, 13-26. Thank you to the City of Gold Coast Council and Club Helensvale for their support of the championships. The finals for each event will be live streamed via the Bowls QLD Facebook. This is a great opportunity for clubs to connect this to their club TV and encourage members to come down to the club to watch the finals together.

The 2019 Junior State Championships were held in Caloundra on April 6-11. With near-perfect weather throughout, the state’s up and coming bowlers showed their best in this year’s competition. U15 Pairs It was a resounding 21-12 win in the under-15 pairs finals for the pint-sized Syarra Blain from Victoria Point and Belmont’s Kane Nelson (skip). Though it was no surprise considering their overwhelming 53-4 win during the sectional round. Teenage Nelson, who’s been playing since he was nine, led the charge well with Syarra who’s only been playing for 12 months. Silver medalists Todd Brain and Jack Chirgwin from Cunnamulla, despite the loss, are glad that their 11-hour trip to the Sunshine Coast paid back

some dividends. Todd’s father and team manager Rick Brain said he was glad that Todd and the contingent of bowls players had the opportunity to face a high level of competition. Nelson and Blain’s semi-finals match proved to be one of the more thrilling rounds of the U15 pairs. They showed off the strength of their team against Samuel Collier and Ty Jesberg, coming back to win in last end picking up three shots for a 17-16 finish. Collier and Jesberg bounced back in their next match with a handy win against Corey Marshall and Clancy Biggar 33-5 for the bronze medal.

U15 Open Pairs Bronze Ty Jesberg (Longreach), Samuel Collier (Pialba)
U18 Pairs An interstate move from Victoria to Tweed Head Bowls didn’t deter Kira Bourke from giving herself a warm welcome to Queensland junior bowls. Alongside skip Jake Rynne, they won the under-18 pairs finals 19-13 against Mitch Doyle and Sean Gillis. Holding onto a six-shot lead with two ends left in the final, the newly formed partnership of Bourke and Rynne remained steady against Doyle and Gillis who had strong wins in the previous rounds. Doyle and Gillis’ closest game leading up to the final was their 22-16 victory over Carl Flegler and Bradley Flegler

in the first round. What followed was an 18-13 win over Urangan Jarret siblings Chloe and Kody, then a 22-11 victory over Cody Staggard and Jacobye McKerche before the finals. It was a neck-and-neck journey to the finals for Jake and Kira, winning their games against Caleb Bowles and John Hammond by three and defeating Shane Rideout and Nick Cahill by eight shots. Beating his friend Nick to the finals was a particular highlight for Jake. “A win over Nicky is always a good day,” Jake said.
U18 Pairs Silver, Sean Gillis (Jindalee), Mitchell Doyle (Hamilton)
U18 Fours It was battle of the giants for the U18’s fours finals. Both Nick Cahill and his team of Jack Davies, Sean Gillis and Kane Nelson and Jake Rynne with his team of Ty Jesberg, Caleb Bowles and John Hammond had won nearly all the games in the sectionals by at least 25 points.
U18 Pairs Bronze, Jack Davies (Bargara), Breanna Pegg (Burnett)
Post-game the boys were happily talking together before the medal presentation. Bantering back and forth, no love was lost in the competition.
In the finals, Rynne seemed to continue his good form, from winning the pairs earlier in the day taking an eight shot lead early. This run included a spectacular six shots score in the second end. But over the next seven ends, a slower green and a shift in the play of the leads saw Cahill chip away until taking the lead at the twelfth end. From there, consecutive runs of scoring secured their place as 2019 fours champions, winning 21-17. Kane Nelson (Belmont Services) shakes hands with Jake Rynne (North Toowoomba)

Triples A welcome breeze blew across the green at the The Waves Bowls club Caloundra on the third day of the Junior State championships. It was all about the triples competition that day and teams came out firing on all cylinders. Jack Davies (Bargara), Kane Nelson (Belmont Serv) and Nick Cahill (Bargara), all fresh off a fours gold didn’t lose step in the opening round winning 41-4. Meanwhile, their fourth member Sean Gillis (Jindalee), along with Mitch Doyle (Hamilton) and Caleb Bowles (Swifts) looked formidable in their opening, winning 27-9 against Hannah Ogden (Burnett), Corey Marshall (Helensvale) and Caysee Wilson (Kawana). The match between Cahill and Jake Rynne’s (North Toowoomba) team of Ty Jessberg (Longreach) and John Hammond (Dalby) nearly finished across the road with Cahill bowling the jack out of the green near the final ends. Though it wasn’t enough with Rynne taking a comfortable win 19-10, going to the semi-finals against his pairs parter Kira Bourke (Tweed Heads), Breanna Pegg (Burnett) and Cody Staggard (Kallangur). Rynne and his team continued their roll against Bourke, controlling the whole match winning 21-6 paving their way to the finals.

It was up to the last bowl in the other semis with Zayah Morgan (Enoggera), Chloe Runge (Glasshouse) and Jack Chirgwin (Glasshouse) coming up against Bradley Flegler (Enoggera), Carl Flegler (Enoggera) and Clancy Biggar (North Dalby). Rolling the kitty short when tied in the final end could’ve been a matchturning error for Morgan and her team when facing against the Flegler brothers and Biggar. Morgan rolled the final bowl, it slithered its way through to the jack, the measuring tape was brought out and Morgan and her team moved to the gold medal match winning 12-11. “I could see it was in, but I wasn’t wearing my glasses so I wasn’t sure,” Zayah said post match. This set up the gold medal final with Morgan vs Rynne and the bronze with Bourke vs Flegler. With the gold match being neck-and-neck for the over half the game, Rynne and his team began to pull away. Scoring on five shots in the 14th end secured their lead 21-8. Rynne’s experience showed over Morgan’s team and they held onto the lead winning 25-9 overall to capture that elusive gold. A similar story evolved in the bronze match when Bourke showed her skill as the current U18 Australian champion and built an early strong lead to win the match against Flegler 20-10.

Singles A rainy day on the Coast meant rain jackets and jumpers were on for the final day of competition. With the green having a different feel to the rest of the week, adjustments had to be made.
In the U18 girls, Tweed Heads’ Kira Bourke triumphed over the competition securing a win in both of her games to claim her second title following her win in the pairs. In her first singles state championship win since her move from Victoria, Kira said she’s enjoyed playing bowls in the Sunshine State. “The greens are a lot better quality and competition is a bit more fierce,” she said.
In the U18 boys, Monto’s Shane Rideout started his singles gold journey with a blistering performance in the sectional rounds, where he won both games including an impressive 21-15 win over Scott Dittman from Biloela. Rideout maintained his form playing strong throughout the post sectional round and the semi-final to take on Dalby’s John Hammond in the grand final. Rideout, after a sluggish start, took a few ends to gain control of the game. He soon found his weight and prevailed to claim this year’s U18 Boys Singles title 21-13.
The U15 Boys Singles Finals saw the closest match out of the singles competitions of the day. Belmont’s Kane Nelson claimed the U15 singles title following a big 21-2 win in his semi-final, he held his nerve to win 21-19 against Ty Jesberg from Longreach. In the U15 girls singles, Kawana’s Caysee Wilson three-peated, claiming her third title since 2017 with an undefeated run in the sectional rounds and a 21-5 win over Burnett’s Hannah Ogden.

Rick Brain brings the contingent from out West It took a bus, three cars and over 10 hours to make it across the state, but Rick Brain and his pack of 16 bowlers from Cunnamulla and Gayndah loved the opportunity to play in the Junior State Championships. With some of the young people only picking up a bowl as recently as three months ago, Rick is proud of the effort the players put together during the competition. “I’ve struggled to talk to people because I get so emotional,” Rick said. Rick hopes this experience can serve as a way for the juniors to set goals for how they want to play bowls in the future. “Mate, they’ll never know the lengths they have to get to if they don’t play against it,” he said. “It’s humbling to see them and the respect they give, it’s not easy out in the country at the moment so it’s really, really great.”
Congratulations to the following eight girls and boys who have been selected for the U18 Queensland Squad. Names were announced at the end of the Junior State Championships. s l w o b r e v o Rave Atherton students
Atherton State High School and Atherton Bowls Club have a partnership program that has been running between Atherton State High School year 10 HPE and Atherton Bowls Club for over six years. Their classes are a mix of theory and practical and Head of HPE at Atherton State High School Jess Porter said both the students and herself enjoyed the experience very much.
Amy, who had just played an “impossible” shot was absolutely rapt with the result during the Class Challenge Play Off.
“This has been my first experience taking year 10 HPX class for the lawn bowls curriculum unit and it has been an extremely valuable learning experience for myself and the students,” she said. Started by former club President Clive Lenister, the program plants a seed in the students which he hopes will encourage them to grow into becoming fully-fledged bowls players. “These skills may not be used in the near future but will stay in their memory bank for, hopefully, later years,” Clive said. The students at Atherton have loved the program; despite their initial reservations many are now raving about how much they enjoyed it and thanking club coach Mal Mackney for his great teaching and dedication. “Year 10 Lawn Bowls has been an amazing experience so far, I never really expected this sport to be as much fun as it is,” student Kahla said. “Mal has not only taught us how to play lawn bowls, but also about teamwork, encouragement, good sportsmanship and confidence.”

could not reel them in. Even a full score of 8 on one end from Bolivia Millerick’s rink of Cassandra Millerick, Pam Fantini and Dee-Anne Robertson over Karen Murphy’s rink could not help reduce the gap. Millerick had a draw with Murphy while Lynsey Clarke and Chloe Stewart’s rinks both lost to go down by 22 overall. The women never looked back after that, convincingly winning the rest of the games: vs VIC 65-47, vs NT 116-36, vs SA 67-41, vs TAS 67-55, vs WA 82-54, vs ACT 72-46. Topping the overall skip ladders were Karen Murphy (NSW) and Brett Wilkie’s (QLD) rink, congratulations to Jayden Christie, Jamie Anderson, Sean Ingham and Brett Wilkie for being the men’s best performed rink of the tournament with six wins and a draw with a margin of 67 for the seven games.
Looking to bounce back from last years’ Australian Sides championships where the men’s and women’s sides finished third and fourth respectively, this year For NSW women, skipped by Karen the Maroons returned to the Murphy, with Kelsey Cottrell and green with renewed focus. Held at the Ettalong Bowls Club from April 11-14, each state put out their best side for the event. Finishing with a silver medal overall, after losing to New South Wales in the first round, Queensland never lost a game to the other six states and territories but unfortunately neither did NSW who claimed both the Marj Morris Trophy and Alley Shield. The men held a slight lead early versus NSW until just over half way when the Blues started to stamp their authority and finish off better to win by 12 shots. Aron Sherriff won his rink by three, Brett Wilkie’s rink drew while Kurt Brown’s rink went down by 15 to Ray Pearse. Our men went on to win five and one draw game in the remainder of the championships: vs VIC 53-50, vs NT 70-48, vs SA 57-45, vs TAS 78-46, vs WA 54-54, finishing off the series with a 61-shot victory against ACT 97-36. By Bob Proctor
2019 saw Q7s-Qld celebrate 10 years of what has evolved into the richest competition in Australia, with the total prize money a whopping $180,000. Starting with just 34 competing teams in its inaugural year; the Q7s-Qld now has to 260 teams from 92 clubs and over 2600 players. Bowlers hail from from Tweed Heads to Tewantin; west to Chinchilla; east to McLeay Island and every club in between.
The finals this year were held at Musgrave Hill Bowls Club over two weekends. Clubs from all over the participation area were represented, with some of the distant Clubs having to return on the second weekend. This year saw the first live-streaming video feed of the Division 1 and Division 1 60+ finals. Live videos were streamed through the Bowls Queensland; Lawn Bowling Australia and Q7s-Qld
Facebook pages. We intend to continue with live-streaming for future Q7s-Qld. Salisbury and Musgrave Hill battled it out for the $8,000 Division 1 60+ winner’s prize. The successful Club was Salisbury. Kallangur and Enoggera fought out the prestigious Division 1 final with Kallangur claiming $8,000 for their endeavours on the green.

Since then, these new bowlers have been coming to our club for three weeks so far, from 9-11am. There is lots of fun and laughter and we are all enjoying the action and friendship. Some have surprised themselves at how well they are bowling. Most have mastered “the big side of the bowl” goes on the outside but sometimes a bowl goes across the other rinks amid a lot of shouting and laughter. Last week, the players tried an actual game of bowls and enjoyed the experience. Thank you to coaches Robyn, Felix and Lorraine for a mammoth effort. Also thank you to the ladies and men’s club members who have been helping and lending their coloured bowls.

Nerang Summer Nines Camaraderie and sportsmanship was at its best at the Nerang Summer Nines on April, 6-7 at McKenzie Park Bowls Club. The two days at the Nines couldn’t have been anymore different with rain slowing down the first day and the sun out for the next. The finals saw a rematch from years prior with Woongoolba playing against Mudgeeraba. Last time these two teams met Mudgeeraba came out winners. History repeated itself once more, with Mudgeeraba proving to be too good winning 75-50 after 70 ends. The event was live streamed over the two days by the GCTDBA. QLD quells tassie in Test
tussle
A great warm-up for the Australian Sides Championship, our Queensland team took both men’s and women’s shield in the two-test series against Tasmania. After the wins were split during the last tournament with Tasmania taking the men’s and Queensland taking the women’s title, this biannual event is gaining momentum. First Test It was a narrow margin of victory for the Queensland women’s side with Tasmania showing they weren’t going to be pushed around. While the Tasmanian team kept it close, they couldn’t make any major dents into the Queensland team. Lynsey Clarke fended off a fightback from Candice Hodgetts to win her game, even though Hodgetts won four consecutive ends to turn a nineshot margin into a one-shot game with three ends to play. But Clarke held on finishing with a score of 22-19.
Tasmania’s Lee Schraner recovered from seven down against Kurt Brown to reduce the margin to a close one with five ends to go, but he could only win one of those five ends and Brown defeated him 20-24. However, hard work and the single victory by Nitz in the first test wasn’t enough for the Tasmanians with the Queensland men still winning the silverware
WOMEN’S TEAM Team 1: Kristy Thatcher (Tweed Heads), Georgia White (Helensvale), Julie Keegan (Broadbeach), Lynsey Clarke (Helensvale) (sk)
The other two rinks had the Queenslanders also winning by three shots. Chloe Stewart had a battle with Tassie’s Courtney Hobbs to win 19-16 while Bolivia Millerick maintained control against Rebecca Van Asch winning 18-15. The nine-shot advantage over the three games saw the QLD women win the first test 59-50.
Team 2: Cassandra Millerick (Broadbeach), Pamela Fantini (Helensvale), Dee-Anne Robertson (Broadbeach), Bolivia Millerick (Broadbeach) (sk)
The men’s rinks saw similar high-end competition with all three games full of lead changes and big shots.
MEN’S TEAM
Tasmania’s Luke Richardson led 17-8 against Aron Sherriff after 10 ends. Sherriff wasn’t taking the possible defeat lightly and completed his comeback with six shots over the last four ends to win 25-20. Meanwhile, Lee Schraner and Brett Wilkie were having a humdinger of a game, trading ends with neither skip surrendering an end; they had the last bowl for eight consecutive ends in the middle of the game. With two ends left the game was level at 17 apiece. Wilkie whizzed through and picked up five shots to win 22-17. Kurt Brown was up against Mark Nitz and, despite managing to close the gap to one shot midway through the game, a strong finish by the opposition saw Nitz winning 21-15.
Second Test It was a slow start for the Tasmanian women as Queensland started to build a lead. Unshaken throughout the game, both Bolivia Millerick and Lynsey Clarke played a cool, calm game even as their opponents fought to level the score, ending up with tidy wins over their Tasmanian opposition. A shining moment for Tasmania was in Candice Hodgett’s rink, after she won 18-15 against Chloe Millerick. Overall though, the Queensland women took the shield, winning the second test 57-47. Tasmania’s men needed at least a draw to keep the hopes of defending the shield alive, but Queensland was keen to take the title and looking to continue the momentum from the first test. With two ends remaining the scores overall were level. But strong play by Brett Wilkie against Luke Richardson would seal the win the last two ends.

The grass can be greener – start planning now! In the current market, many clubs remain focused on increasing revenue to safeguard their future. Quick fix solutions and rapid cash injections may be tempting, but are they really the answer long term? For clubs who are uncertain about their future, master planning could be the answer for cementing your club’s place in the community and preserving your legacy. This article explains how thinking about your club’s strategic direction today could identify new revenue streams. What is a master plan? A master plan is a term used to describe an all-inclusive planning process for developing new facilities, diversifying revenue streams and establishing a sustainable plan for the successful future of a club. By utilising a master planning process, club owners and advisors are able to determine a wide range of interconnecting issues that may affect the development of a facility and the suburban area that surrounds a specific club. A master plan usually includes: • a vision for the club or a part of the club; • a financial plan and corresponding budget; • a comprehensive management plan; • an asset maintenance plan; and • concept plans and drawings. Benefits of planning Clubs need to plan their long-term viability in order to grow and succeed. Regardless of
their size, location or sector, all clubs should have a plan which guides their strategic direction into the future. It is essential for clubs to create and maintain an environment which attracts, retains and values its member and volunteers. In order to do this, thought must be given to the main objectives and ultimate goals of the club. Additionally, planning is a foolproof way raise a club’s profile in order to gain support from the community and decision makers, which can then lead to a source of funding, grants and sponsorship. Our top tips for a head start Bowls clubs may want to consider the following pathways which are commonly used to shape a sustainable future: •
Artificial greens – there are significant long terms costs benefits associated with the switch to synthetic grass… think staff, maintenance and saving on water bills!
•
Clubhouse reinvestment – the inclusion of new function spaces or a revamped dining area could be the calling card to attract new members and volunteers from all age groups.
•
Utilising space – instead of continuing to maintain spare land or unused greens, think about whether any additional space can be sold, leased or redeveloped in the future.
Rather than a short-term solution, these options provide the possibility of a steady
income stream which can be used for years to come. No matter which planning pathway you choose, analysing your club’s strengths and weaknesses is a smart starting point for a long term plan. From there you can develop an action plan to achieve your club’s vision and objectives, while also evaluating any potential opportunities or threats. This is likely to include an analysis of your club’s current situation, including its financial position over the past few years and consideration of the club’s membership figures, to identify any trends in participation, age or gender groups which can then be capitalised on moving forward. Like any organisation, the evolution of your bowls clubs is necessary to ensure that it remains relevant in the ever changing community. We are always available if you would like to discuss potential options for your club, we want to see your master plan come to life!

Bowls Premier League expansion:
Article and image: Bowls Australia
expression of interest for new licensees Bowls Australia (BA) is delighted to confirm that it will be expanding the number of teams for its Bowls Premier League (BPL) competition in 2019. The first of its kind, the BPL has been a ground-breaking event for bowls in Australia. A fast and exciting version of the game comprising the best players the sport has to offer, the BPL will be returning to Club Pine Rivers this November for its tenth instalment (BPL10) and we’re seeking new licensees to part of an expanded competition. The beloved competition will again be broadcast exclusively on Fox Sports with 20 hours of live coverage of the night sessions, including finals. The current eight-team BPL is based around a flexible licensee ownership model, aiming to create consumer engagement with each teams’ respective geographical area. The BPL allows more than one team in each state or region. BPL licenses (of a three-year duration) have typically been issued to: •
an individual club
•
two or more clubs located within a particular region (which together form an incorporated entity)
•
a state bowls association
•
a private organisation
•
a national bowls association
The successful new licensees will have their contracts begin on July 1, 2019 and enter the competition from BPL10 from November 12-15, 2019.

Changes to the bowlers arm policy There has been a lot of discussion and information advised over the past few months about the BA Artificial Devices Policy which has come into effect on May, 1 2019. The main changes to the policy are in relation to the bowlers arms as follows: It has been amended to remove the requirement for players to have approval from their State Governing Body to use an artificial device (bowlers arm), or to have a medical certificate to use a bowlers arm. Therefore, the clauses on page 3 have been altered accordingly and I will list the clause numbers as not all members will have access to the policy document as a whole. 5.1 (page 3) – Bowlers Arms: 5.1.1. Bowlers Arms have been successfully introduced into the game to allow persons with a physical restriction or impairment that would otherwise prevent them from playing the game the opportunity to play, or continue to play bowls. There are various types of bowlers arms approved for use in Australia.
Member Maureen holding an approved bowling arm
5.1.1.1 Each device is manufactured in several lengths and release mechanisms. Only approved arms (with a BA Logo as part of the National Merchandising Program) can be used in Australia. Modifications are not permitted (with exception to the rubber grip on the bottom of the arm which may need to be replaced as it wears out). For a list of approved bowlers arms refer to Bowls Australia website. 5.1.2 If a player is using a bowlers arm that is not approved, the player becomes a defaulting player as per Law C.2 and will forfeit the game as per Law C.10.
Bowling arm showing the National Merchandising Program Logo sticker
I have also recently received a query regarding walking frames (also set out on Page 3) and must admit that I have not seen a player using a walking frame on the green, so consequently I have looked into the situation more and will set out the following clauses for your information: 4.1 (page 3) – Walking Frames: 4.1.1 Walking Frames can be used provided the frame does not cause damage to the green. To eliminate damage that maybe caused to the green, the frame must comply with the following: 4.1.1.1 Preferably wheels of 45mm and pneumatic as applied to wheelchairs of wide wheels that are smooth and without tread.
5.1.3 A player may use any number of approved bowlers arms during the trial ends for suitability. Once a game has commenced, the designated brand of style of bowlers arm chosen by the player must stay the same during the match. 5.1.4 Whenever a player commences using an approved bowlers arm in a game, the player must use it for the remainder of that game. This does not apply to the rolling of the jack, which can be rolled either by hand or by a bowlers arm. 5.1.5 A player cannot alter/change the brand or style of approved bowlers arm during the course of a game except in such circumstance where the device is rendered unplayable and in this instance, the player may change to another approved brand or style of bowlers arm on approval by the umpire or controlling body.
Walking frame with wheels with a tread
Walking frame with smooth wheels
5.1.6 Challenge on appeal to an umpire regarding a bowlers arm could occur before the trial ends or up to 10 minutes after a game (but not during the game) as similar to Law 52.4.3 and 52.4.4.2).
4.1.1.2 If the frame has “feet”, each one must have its own base covered with rubber or similar material. The base should measure at least 76mm across.
Referring to Clause 5.1.1.1 – if the National Merchandising Program logo sticker comes off due to wear and tear, a request to Bowls Australia can be made for a replacement sticker which will be posted out. The procedure to obtain the sticker is as follows:
4.1.2 Players are not to sit on their frames while on the green unless each “foot” and wheel complies with the specifications above.
Player will need to provide details of their arm (ideally a photo) so that B.A. can confirm that the device is indeed an approved bowlers arm, which can be done by post or email to admin@bowls.com.au
I hope that the above information, explanations and photos are of assistance to you as it is important that the principles, as set out in the Artificial Devices Policy, are followed as this will allow access for all members to continue enjoying the wonderful game of lawn bowls and the friendship it has to offer. Inaugural UBC champions At the conclusion of one of the most exciting and enthusiastic finals series ever seen, the Dandenong Club team of Gary Kelly, Barrie Lester and Wayne Turley emerged as inaugural Ultimate Bowls Championship ‘UBC’ champions at the Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club on April, 5. Held over two days, Thursday and Friday (April, 4-5) the new concept UBC roared into the sporting world’s consciousness in Australia at the Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club in Shellharbour. This first leg of a three-round series offering the largest prizemoney and contingencies cache ever, (reputed to be in the vicinity of $1 million) featured 24 franchised teams, fast-paced short match action, reward points preferred to shots and the best players in the world. The 24 crack teams at Warilla finished seven pairs rounds on day one, with another four to complete the round robin format on day two followed by the all-important knockout finals. Day 1 The unbeaten South Australian Streaky Bay Sharks team of Ben Twist, Josh Studham and young Scotsman John Fleming led section A with 139 points, followed by the Taren Point franchise of Ali Forsyth, David Axon and John Green on 100 points. Leaders in Section B were New Zealand’s Wellington Hornets combination of Gary Lawson, David Ferguson and Jamie Hill on 213 points, with Kelvin Kerkow, Chloe Stewart and Kurt Brown from Tweed Heads in second place on 75 points.

Day 2 In an emphatic performance the Dandenong Club team of Gary Kelly, Barrie Lester and Wayne Turley defeated the Streaky Bay Sharks combination of Ben Twist, John Fleming and Josh Studham 92-31 in the main event to collect the $60,000 first prize cheque, while the vanquished picked up a none-too-shabby $30,000 for their effort. In the post lunch session in Section B, Holdfast Heat’s Wayne Ruediger and Max Kleinig from South Australia established the highest winning margin by defeating UBC Wild Card’s Rod Mellon and Steve Douglas 109-17 in Round 8. Amazingly, in their very next outing, Wild Card, with Nathan Wise in for Mellon, toppled eventual quarter finalists Aron Sherriff and Harley McDonald of Exodas 88-41. And what about the hosting Warilla Gorillas - Aaron Teys and Jeremy Henry - in the same section? After three rounds the hometown heroes were little more than roadside debris on the path to UBC glory, having not bothered the scorers and sitting 164 points in arrears. However, just 24 hours later they sat in second spot having won seven consecutive matches and had the rest of the field ‘hearing footsteps’. At the conclusion of qualifying, after an untimely last round loss to the North Queensland Roos pairing of Shannon McIlroy and Damien McGee, the Gorillas finished in third place. Ironically, just when the packed spectator terraces thought all was settled, both undefeated teams, Streaky Bay Sharks and Wellington Hornets, were well beaten in the 11th and final round. The main benefactors were Taren Point’s Ali Forsyth and David Axon, who thought they’d blown their chances in the previous qualifier, but rose to the occasion against the South Australian-based Sharks; while on an adjoining rink, Holdfast Bay, who had taken The Point’s spot, narrowly lost their last outing against Dandenong to gift Forsyth and Co a start in the finals.
Rooey travelled from all the way from Northern Qld to support his team at the UBC
In the much-sought-after ‘side’ event Broadbeach’s Ryan Bester won the first ‘Golden Touch’ award for his 24 chalkers throughout the tournament, while Harley McDonald from Exodas finished second with 22.
Four cracking quarter finals could have easily been scripted masterclasses from a collection of the sport’s biggest names: world champions Alex Marshall, Ben Twist, Aron Sherriff, Jeremy Henry, Gary Lawson and Ali Forsyth, just to name a few; but it was recently-crowned World Cup champion Gary Kelly from Dandenong Club who delivered the shot of UBC’s short but illustrious life – eleven behind on the scoreboard and one down on the head, the Irish star manufactured a baby cannon with the final bowl of the final end that counted 15 points to claim victory. Congratulations to the Bowls Asia Eagles team of Ye Sui Ying and Vivian Yip who finished with seven wins in qualifying and made a most welcome and competitive appearance in the quarter finals. However, it was in the semi-finals that Kelly and Lester signified their intentions with a polished victory over unbackable favourites Gary Lawson and David Ferguson in their five-end encounter.

JUBILEE BOWLS CLUB TO UPGRADE LIGHTS AFTER FLOODS By Lesley Bates I always receive a warm welcome when I visit Jubilee Bowls Club, but my last visit was especially rewarding when I presented a $2,500 Disaster Fund cheque from Bowls Australia. Instead of using a “band aid” fix on their light system which was severely damaged during the floods, the club has decided to upgrade and put insurance funds, State Government Sport and Recreation assistance funds, this donation and some of their own savings towards an upgraded system. K.C. Jones sincerely thanked our generous bowls community who have raised funds through bowls events and donations from districts and clubs.

Bowls Australia receives $1.2 million boost for better ageing By Domenic Favata
Bowls Australia (BA) has welcomed a $1.2 million grant from the Sport Australia Better Ageing program to develop the ‘Roll Back The Clock’ initiative. Roll Back the Clock aims to boost physical activity rates among Australians aged 65 and over through bowls, light exercise and education. The funding comes at an important time when sedentary behaviour and isolation are key risk factors in our ageing population. One of 27 successful applicants, BA will receive $1,200,000 to help more than 8,000 older Australians when inactivity, isolation and loneliness are key concerns for the increasingly ageing Australian population. Through the implementation of the Better Ageing grants, Sport Australia aims to reduce cardiovascular and metabolic problems, control weight, combat chronic disease and help prevent falls. In addition to the health benefits, engaging in physical activity and group sports for older Australians provides increasingly important opportunities for socialisation, peer-support, conversation and reduces the possibility for loneliness related physical and mental illnesses. Currently only 25 per cent of Australians over 65 meet the Department of Health physical activity guidelines of 30 minutes activity per day. Article and image: Bowls Australia
Coaches at the Sunshine Coaches at the Coast Forum Sunshine Coast Forum
Sunshine Coast coaches forum By Jacqui Hineman
Held at the Sunshine Coast District Rooms on March, 29, this half-day forum saw 16 coaches attend, which was aimed at engaging, educating, motivating and promoting coaches on the Sunshine Coast. Coaches were able to gain knowledge about coaching players with a bowling arm and how to use a 40 bowls test to enable them to develop and implement relevant training sessions. The second half of the forum was dedicated to promoting discussion and feedback from coaches on various topics, for example: what is your role as a club coach, coaching junior bowlers and delivering training programs at your club. Coaches were also asked to participate in an online survey before they attended the forum. The information provided will be used to identify the needs of coaches working at the club level. Attending coaches said that their favourite part of the morning was when new coaches were paired up with experienced coaches. Providing opportunities for networking and information sharing is so important if we want to keep ahead and provide engaging coaching and training programs. Many coaches indicated that they would be happy to attend another forum and offered suggestions that the next one should be an all-day event. There were many people who put a lot of time and effort into developing this forum and the job is not over yet. All the information collected on the day will be collated and used to identify the needs and wants of our coaches. It was a shame that Brian West could not attend on the day, as he put a lot of time and effort into developing the folders full of resources that coaches were given on arrival to take home for future reference. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day a success.

Nutrition for Lawn Bowlers Competitive bowlers throughout the state are starting to lift their training schedules in anticipation of the upcoming State District Sides, State Championships and Australian Open Championships. However, how many players include lifting their nutrition and their hydration levels. Most players, or hopefully all players, appreciate that what they drink and eat prior to any form of exercise has a very real impact on performance. Few, however, are aware that fuel and fluid reserves are a result of what they eat and drink on the weeks and days prior to an event - not what they ingest on the day of competition. As I’m not a sports dietician, I can’t identify individual needs but I will attempt to provide some basic guidelines on the necessary components to healthy nutrition before a major event. Firstly let’s ask the question, “Why should I eat and drink before sport?”. The answer is that to perform well, the body needs to have adequate fuel stored. Carbohydrate fuel is storied in the muscles and liver as glycogen, which helps maintain blood glucose levels - important during prolonged workouts and endurance sports. Eating a carbohydraterich meal or snack will enhance both physical and mental performance. Suggested nutritious carbohydrate foods per serve include rice, noodles, bread, crumpets, muffins, rice cakes, potatoes, cornflakes and fruit cereal, oats, cereal bars and sports bars. Proteins were commonly believed to be a major fuel component used in training and games. We now know that carbohydrates and fat are our main energy source. However, protein is still necessary to maintain a balanced diet as it rebuilds and repairs muscle tissues, hormones and enzyme functions. Animal sources of protein includes beef, lamb, chicken, pork, fish, eggs, milk, cheese and yoghurt, while sources of plant protein include rice, noodles, tofu, bread, breakfast cereals, baked beans, lentils and nuts. Fat is perhaps one of the most commonly discussed, yet poorly understood nutrient. It has approximately twice the energy of carbohydrates and protein per gram and is the most concentrated

source of energy for the body. However, it does have its drawbacks. As we are aware, obesity is of major concern in Australia and that’s because people eat too much fat, especially derived from fast food outlets. Low fat foods, however, adequately supply all the necessary requirements. These foods, plus the methods we use in cooking, can help us establish the perfect balance to our diet. Consider cooking methods such as grilling, dry or light oil frying, baking on a rack, microwaving, steaming or poaching. Use low fat milks, cheese, yoghurt, ice cream and sauces. Increase the volume of salads and a variety of vegetables with lean meat, fish or chicken. Try and avoid anything deep fried. Snacks are an important part of your diet. They help reduce the reliance on eating large amounts in one sitting. Snacks containing high carbohydrates and low fat such as sandwiches, fruit bread, fruits, cereal bars, scones, low fat muffins and low fat fruit yoghurt are the best options. As you can see, there is a huge variety of nutritious food from which to choose. A balanced approach to diet is most effective in producing and maintaining high performance levels. Check with dieticians or access fact sheets for your own personal levels of nutritious intake.
