SHEP QUEENSLAND
Concert 10 Sunday 4 October 2020, 1.50 pm Conservatorium Theatre
DIRECTOR'S WELCOME We are delighted to welcome our SHEP Queensland cohort of 900 emerging musicians to Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University’s state of the art South Bank facilities. We trust you will enjoy your experience with us. Now a firmly established aspect of music education in Queensland, SHEP has grown from relatively modest beginnings in 2001 to hosting over 4,500 students throughout Queensland each year; with many more being nominated than we are able to accommodate. Congratulations to all involved. In 2020 we are again pleased to offer a Big Band and Symphony Orchestra; along with 3 Wind Ensembles, 3 Vocal Ensembles, 2 String Ensembles and a Guitar Ensemble. Participants travel to Brisbane from the Border to the Cape and from as far west as Mount Isa, representing 172 secondary schools. Our 11 SHEP Queensland clinicians (and 3 AHEP clinicians) are all esteemed Queensland clinicians. This year we are particularly pleased that so many families and schools have been willing, and able, to participate in our programs and thank all involved for their continued support of music education throughout the State. Welcome to SHEP Queensland 2020. We hope to see many of you return as students, performers and audience members in the future. Professor Gemma Carey Acting Director Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University
MALCOLM WILLIAMSON VOCAL ENSEMBLE Malcolm Williamson (1931-2003) was born in Sydney and studied composition and horn at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. His teachers included Eugene Goossens. In 1950 he moved to London where he worked as an organist, a proofreader, and a nightclub pianist. From 1953 he studied with Elisabeth Lutyens. He was a prolific composer at this time, receiving many commissions and often performed his own works, both on organ and piano. In 1975, the death of Sir Arthur Bliss left the title of Master of the Queen’s Music vacant. His appointment to fill this post was a surprise, over other composers such as Benjamin Britten, Michael Tippett and Malcolm Arnold, such that William Walton had remarked that “the wrong Malcolm” had been chosen. In addition, he was the first non-Briton to hold the post. He wrote a number of pieces connected to his royal post, including Mass of Christ the King (1978) and Lament in Memory of Lord Mountbatten of Burma (1980).
Conductor - Jason Barry-Smith Jason Barry-Smith gained his Bachelor of Music with honours in 1991 and was also awarded the Queensland Conservatorium Medal for Excellence. He has since gone on to win various awards, including the prestigious Marianne Mathy Scholarship (Australian Singing Competition), and the Italian Opera Award (Opera Foundation Australia). As well as a repertoire of over thirty-five roles in both opera and music theatre, Jason has also established a reputation as a much sought after conductor/arranger. He has conducted and arranged for the Queensland Pops Orchestra, The Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols (televised on Channel 7), Carols in the City (televised on Channel 10, and the Queensland Youth Choir; composed new works for Imogen Chorale and VoiceWorks that have received international premieres; and worked as an orchestral arranger for such artists as Glenn Shorrock, Marcia Hines, Marina Prior, Paulini, Vanessa Amorosi, Simon Gallaher, Guy Sebastian and Brisbane Excelsior Brass Band. As a conductor, he was Assistant Conductor/Musical Director of the Queensland Youth Choir (1987-1992); and chorus master and vocal coach for Essgee Productions’ “The Pirates of Penzance”, “The Mikado”, “HMS Pinafore”, “A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum”, and “The Merry Widow” (1994-1998). He was also the Director of Opera Queensland’s Young Artist Program from 2009-2013; Creative Director of Opera Queensland’s Open Stage from 2014-2015; Conductor of the Ipswich City Orchestra in 2006; Assistant Conductor of the Queensland Pop Orchestra from 2005-2012; Musical Director/Conductor of Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” QPAC (2015); Musical Director/Arranger/Conductor of “Tumbulgum and the Countdown to…” for OperaQ & Arts Northern Rivers (2016); and has led Opera Queensland’s community singing projects both state-wide and internationally through their innovative “Sing Sing Sing” program. Jason is also a much admired singing teacher who has many students currently working nationally and internationally in the opera, music theatre, and pop genres.
Accompanist - Maree Hall Maree Hall is a highly regarded and versatile musician and teacher. With wide experience in accompanying instrumentalists, vocalists and ensembles, Maree’s passion resides with choral work. She is currently on staff at Young Conservatorium, conducting the Vocal Ensemble, and is in frequent demand to accompany SHEP choirs across the state. Currently teaching classroom music and directing choirs at Ormiston College, Maree is dedicated to fostering a strong foundation in music skills, particularly promoting the voice as a primary instrument and singing as a natural, lifelong experience.

[Young Conservatorium] gave me opportunities to perform on various stages and concert halls. I remember having to perform at the Queen St Mall for the first time which was really exciting for a 10 year old kid. Dami Im Eurovision Finalist
