SHEP QUEENSLAND
Concert 2 Sunday 4 October 2020, 8.50 am Conservatorium Theatre
DIRECTOR'S WELCOME We are delighted to welcome our SHEP Queensland cohort of 900 emerging musicians to Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University’s state of the art South Bank facilities. We trust you will enjoy your experience with us. Now a firmly established aspect of music education in Queensland, SHEP has grown from relatively modest beginnings in 2001 to hosting over 4,500 students throughout Queensland each year; with many more being nominated than we are able to accommodate. Congratulations to all involved. In 2020 we are again pleased to offer a Big Band and Symphony Orchestra; along with 3 Wind Ensembles, 3 Vocal Ensembles, 2 String Ensembles and a Guitar Ensemble. Participants travel to Brisbane from the Border to the Cape and from as far west as Mount Isa, representing 172 secondary schools. Our 11 SHEP Queensland clinicians (and 3 AHEP clinicians) are all esteemed Queensland clinicians. This year we are particularly pleased that so many families and schools have been willing, and able, to participate in our programs and thank all involved for their continued support of music education throughout the State. Welcome to SHEP Queensland 2020. We hope to see many of you return as students, performers and audience members in the future. Professor Gemma Carey Acting Director Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University
BRIAN HOGG WIND ORCHESTRA Brian Hogg was born in Yorkshire, England, and came over to Australia in 1964 with his parents. He now considers himself as an Australian and works in the creative ministries department of the Salvation Army. He has a Diploma of Music and a Bachelor of Education and enjoys a growing reputation as a composer/conductor. As a musician in the Salvation Army his works for brass band have been played and recorded internationally. His compositions for concert and symphonic bands have earned him the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association’s Composer of the Year twice. He has twice won awards for significant contributions to the school band repertoire presented by Brolga Music Publishers and has an international reputation as a composer for both brass and symphonic bands. During the past ten years he has adjudicated at contests and festivals throughout Australia where his own compositions have found their way onto the repertoire lists. As a conductor, the role of community music-making is an important issue, and with wide experience with all levels of musicians, he strives to continually extend the musicianship of the ensembles he works with.
Conductor - Brad Ruben Mr Ruben has been an Instrumental Music teacher in Queensland State Schools since 1991 and has taught at a variety of primary and secondary schools. From 2002 until the present he has been the Woodwind specialist and Instrumental Music Coordinator at Brisbane State High School. During that period he has also worked as a casual lecturer in Woodwind Pedagogy and Music Education at Griffith University and the University of Queensland. He has successfully conducted primary, high school and community ensembles in concert and contest situations. He has been a guest conductor at music camps and programs in Queensland and interstate. He has also adjudicated Eisteddfods and band competitions around the South-East. Brad and his wife never have any money because they have two teenage daughters. He keeps a modest collection of Australian plants in his garden and an unnecessarily large collection of fishing rods in his garage.

[Young Conservatorium] gave me opportunities to perform on various stages and concert halls. I remember having to perform at the Queen St Mall for the first time which was really exciting for a 10 year old kid. Dami Im Eurovision Finalist
