The students performing tonight; Elise Greig, the Director; Heidi Loveland, Musical Director; Joseph Simons, Choreographer and all the technical team have worked tirelessly to bring you this wonderful version of It’s Only Life. As well as thanking the students, Elise, Heidi, Joseph and all the technical team, we would like to thank you for supporting us and very much look forward to welcoming you again to our future performances. Please enjoy our production of It’s Only Life.

From the Director As part of Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series, a CD of John Bucchino’s It’s Only Life was recorded through the PS Classics label in 2006. That CD (or the iTunes version) has been on high rotation in my household since Paul Sabey asked me to work on this beautiful piece. I am forever grateful. I was instantly captured by the muscularity of the music, the moments of joy and heartbreak within the lyrics. I was also aware of maintaining the integrity of the piece as I set about working with the third year MT students to include their stories and insights. Originally written to be performed by 5 actors, with a cast of twenty-three we needed to balance the educational and training requirements of the students with the theatrical reality of creating a new version of this work. We have therefore chosen a simple theatrical staging that puts the music and the performers firmly at the centre. I’d like to thank Paul Sabey for his wonderful leadership and support, and the marvellous Heidi Loveland and Joseph Simons for their tireless efforts and unwavering professionalism. Thanks also to Amy and her team, Keith, Brayden and Owen for bringing the technical aspects of the production together. And where would any of us be without Domi and Cathy, so a big thanks to them both. To the spectacular student performers, thanks for working so generously throughout this collaboration. It has been an absolute joy to create this new version of Bucchino’s work with you; a work that reminds us of the importance of creativity and love within the effervescence of this wonderfully complex life. And to you, our intrepid audience, thanks so much for taking the time to come out and see this life-affirming work. May it remind you, as Bucchino puts it, that “fear is what we learn, but love is who we are.” Enjoy!
