Welcome It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Legally Blonde The Musical, performed by our 2nd year Musical Theatre students. The students have worked incredibly hard over the trimester to bring you this beautiful production. In addition to thanking the students for their commitment to the rehearsal process, I would like to thank the many people that have contributed to today’s performance including Penny Farrow, Heidi Loveland, Joseph Simons, the Performing Arts department staff and the technical crew. This group of students has continued to grow and mature in the creation of this workshop performance, and I am sure that you will enjoy following them through the story of Legally Blonde The Musical. Finally, I would like to thank you for your support, and I very much look forward to seeing you again at our future events. Please enjoy our production of Legally Blonde The Musical.
Professor Paul Sabey Head of Performing Arts Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University
From The Director Welcome! 2020 has been a strange and trying year for us all. Theatre making in 2020 has required us to stretch our creative muscles more than usual and find solutions to new problems. We’ve all risen to the challenge and here we are: nearly at the end of 2020 with a show, a space, an audience and knowing how fortunate we are. Legally Blonde The Musical marks this cohort’s first foray into a live full-length musical – their previous production, The Boyfriend, was realised via Zoom due to Covid-19 restrictions. Like all second year productions, Legally Blonde is a workshop. This means the focus is on process rather than the final product. That is not to say the final product is not important, rather that the process of how to rehearse is paramount at this stage of the students’ learning. The aim is for students to start making the connection between daily class work and the rehearsal room, and to begin cementing their personal process. We thank the department teachers for all the work that has come before (and during) this period – it’s their day-to-day work the cast is utilising and extending. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with Heidi Loveland, Joseph Simons and Elise Greig – I thank them for their vision, dedication and senses of humour. Thanks to Amy Hauser for helping to paint and erect the set, and to our administrators Cathy Healy and Dominique Fegan, who are always there when you need them. I’d like to thank the students for their enthusiasm and love for this story. They’ve spent countless extra hours sourcing/ creating costumes and props and helping paint the set. And as always, thank you to Paul Sabey, who is unwavering in his support of his staff and the students. It is his wish for each student to reach their full potential; Legally Blonde shows us they are all well on their way to this goal.
