Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major (Op. 26) (1921)

SERGEI PROKOFIEV

NOTES

II. Tema con variazioni

3

I. Andante—Allegro

III. Allegro, ma non troppo Prokofiev began writing material for his third piano concerto shortly after the varied reception to his second, in 1913. Originally, this material was for a theme and variations, which he attempted to revise in 1916-1917 without successfully completing the work. In 1921 Prokofiev completed the C major concerto and premiered the work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Today, the concerto is the most popular of Prokofiev’s works for piano and orchestra. PROGRAM

4 PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 5 in E minor (Op. 64) (1888) I. Andante—Allegro con anima—Molto più tranquillo II. Andante cantabile, con alcuna licenza III. Valse. Allegro moderato IV. Finale. Andante maestoso—Allegro vivace—Meno mosso As with his Manfred Symphony, written three years earlier, Tchaikovsky’s fifth is a cyclical symphony, with a central recurring theme which can be found in all four movements. This theme has been referred to as the ‘Fate theme’, shadowing the composer’s scenario sketches prior to writing the work: “...a complete resignation before fate, which is the same as the inscrutable predestination of fate…” Program notes by Dr Samuel Dickenson
