JANET AGOSTINO
Janet Agostino is a performer and teacher in Sydney, with a career that spans four decades and reflects a sustained contribution to both music and education. She holds degrees in Learner Diversity, a Master of Gifted Education, a Fellowship from the Trinity College in London in guitar performance, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Creative Practice. She is Director of the University of New South Wales Guitar Ensemble and guest conductor of the Sydney Classical Guitar Society Orchestra. Janet was a founding member of the Sydney Guitar Quartet, a group which performed extensively throughout Australia over a ten-year period, the first guitar quartet in Australia at the time. Janet performs as ‘Duo Agostino’ with husband Raffaele Agostino and the Duo joins with colleague, guitarist/composer Richard Charlton, as ‘Sydney Guitar Trio’. With a dual focus on the development of the guitar as an ensemble instrument, and presenting and recording Australian works for this genre, the Duo and Trio have performed and taught nationally and internationally, including in the U.K., U.S.A., Argentina, Italy, Vietnam and New Zealand.
Karin Schaupp is one of the most outstanding guitarists on the international scene, her playing hailed by the German press as “so perfect, so complete, that it seems like a miracle”. In her teens she won prestigious international prizes in Italy and Spain, and is today sought after internationally as a recitalist, soloist and festival guest, making countless television and radio appearances.
Karin has released six best-selling solo CDs for Warner Music and ABC Classics as well as various award-winning ensemble and orchestral albums. She has won two ARIA awards as well as various other recording accolades.
Performance highlights include performing as soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, some 150 performances of Lotte’s Gift, performances at a Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony, Goodwill Games Opening Ceremony, World Expo (Japan) and Hong Kong Arts Festival, and a forthcoming Musica Viva International Concert Season tour Flinders Quartet.
Karin leads the guitar department at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University as well as teaching in optimal performance practice. She lives in Brisbane with her husband Giac and two children.
The Riverside Guitar Ensemble is resident at the Queensland Conservatorium and brings together Queensland’s finest young professional guitarists with current guitar students from the Conservatorium guitar department. The ensemble is directed by Karin Schaupp and has performed extensively in South-East Queensland and further afield as it continues to challenge the boundaries of repertoire for this unique ensemble combination. It is rare and challenging for a guitar
ensemble of this size to perform unconducted, making it
function much like a chamber orchestra and resulting in a very strong sense of communication amongst all members. The ensemble’s premiere recording of “Ginastera’s Dream” by Brazilian composer Chrystian Dozza has been internationally released on Dozza’s new CD. The ensemble has also appeared alongside the internationally acclaimed ZOO Guitar Duo (Holland) and continues to premiere and commission new works. In July, the ensemble was invited to perform alongside local and international guitar luminaries at the Adelaide Guitar Festival. Their concert was hailed by the Adelaide Advertiser as “immaculately performed”.
