William Shakespeare’s
Measure for Measure Directed by Sarah Ogden
FROM THE DIRECTOR
In post-war Australia, the economy and the brothels are booming. Awash with libertarian American culture and consumerism, the country is euphoric. The people are running amok. But it’s beginning to feel like the sour end of the party. As PM Duke jets off on ‘holiday’, Angelo, the unimpeachable Minister of Defence is given a mandate to enforce long-neglected decency laws and bring the people to heel. He begins by making an example of a young poet, who is handed a death sentence for getting his fiancé up the duff. Isabella is faced with a terrible choice. To save her brother she must put her dreams of becoming a nun aside and thrust her way through a male-dominated system, where those who wield power take what they please. She needs an ally, but…. “Who will believe thee Isabel?” And what will they ask in return? Justice is finding its teeth and the powerful and powerless alike must learn to face the consequences. It has been a delight to dive into Measure for Measure with the second year acting ensemble to unpick and bring to life the webs of power, coercion and gender politics in this thorny ‘problem play’. Navigating the delicate balance between comedy and drama, they have enthusiastically brought their hearts, minds, bodies and voices to the floor as we filter this old story through an Australia of not so long ago, along the way uncovering the stark relevance for us now. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching them stretch and grow to meet the demands of Shakespeare’s language as they continue their training, a process that continues now as we meet and share with you, our audience. Thank you for your support.
