Musical Theatre Workshop - Cairns

15 - 17 September, 2023

Cairns State High School

The Bachelor of Musical Theatre program at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University is one of the leading musical theatre courses in Australia. Graduates of the course enter into the industry with the highest level of training, with our alumni appearing in major musicals around the country.

This immersive workshop for performing arts students in Grade 11 & 12 is a fun and collaborative weekend encompassing skill-training, harmony exploration, ensemble development and vocal masterclasses throughout the Friday evening, and full-day Saturday schedule. The program will conclude with a small showing of workshop excerpts on the Sunday, followed by a Q&A between staff, students, and local teachers.

Throughout the Musical Theatre Workshop, participants are exposed to elements of the training processes taught within the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (QCGU) Musical Theatre degree, including foundational vocal technique, ensemble theatre practice, dance technique and theatrical improvisation. This workshop is also a precursor to the QCGU Audition Workshop, which is structured to train prospective auditionees in the skills required to successfully audition for a place in the QCGU Musical Theatre degree program.

Since 2013, QCGU’s Workshop series (Musical Theatre Workshop & Audition Workshop) has given young performers of all skill levels the opportunity to explore their creativity through acting, singing, and dancing. Our programs are taught by QCGU Musical Theatre lecturers and industry professionals who have trained many of Australia’s leading Musical Theatre stars (seen in Wicked, Frozen, & Juliet, Beauty and the Beast, Six, Jagged Little Pill, The Phantom of the Opera, Aladdin, Mary Poppins, Come from Away and many, many more).

INVOLVEMENT:

To be involved, students will need to be nominated by their teacher – classroom, vocal, ensemble, dance studio or private practice – and be available for the full weekend workshop (15th - 17th September 2023).

NOMINATIONS:

We encourage teachers (from school instrumental/vocal programs, classroom programs, dance studios, private practice, and community ensembles) to nominate students who meet the criteria for this program (please find criteria below), by completing the Nomination Form (link on page 3) by 14 August, 2023. It is essential that the student you are nominating is both aware and prepared to participate in this program.

CRITERIA FOR THE MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP:

• Students can be in either Grade 11 or 12 at school (or equivalent), or have completed school within the last 2 years.

• Students must be able to physically participate in all skills practiced within the workshop (Dance, Voice, Acting), without causing or aggravating injury. A medical form must be completed prior to workshop commencement.

• Students must have two (2) contrasting musical theatre songs (no longer than 2 minutes each) memorised and ready to perform in a masterclass environment.

• Students must provide two (2) clearly edited copies of the sheet music for both songs (one for your accompanist and one for the panel).

TEACHERS:

The visiting QCGU musical theatre staff strongly believe in sharing knowledge and supporting teachers and teaching-artists throughout Australia. This is why we have made the Musical Theatre Workshop accessible to all nominating teachers of any discipline (Dance, Acting, Voice), to audit. A teacher can nominate one or more students for the program, and this will entitle them to audit any or all of the workshop modules throughout the weekend. The program will conclude on the Sunday with an in-depth Q&A between staff, students, and local teachers.

ATTENDANCE:

Participants are expected to make themselves available for the full workshop - including all individual modules (singing, acting and dancing), masterclasses and showings. Participating in the Musical Theatre Workshop is a commitment, and students are required to attend the entire workshop. If you have an event (e.g. family, school, sporting, community, religious) that you know will preclude you from any part of the workshop, you should not apply.
