DAVEY PLAYS WES

Friday 9 August : Ian Hanger Recital Hall

There's a common idea in Jazz that there have been three great guitarists: Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, and of course Wes Montgomery. The world of guitar would never be the same after Cannonball Adderley discovered Wes playing in dive bars in Indianapolis. A career that would skyrocket late in Wes's Life would unfortunately be cut tragically short leaving less than 15 years of material, but a legacy that has changed the world of guitar.

The Montgomery family were a keystone musical family in middle America and are certainly regarded as one of the great Jazz families of the era. Younger brother Buddy played vibraphone and keys, whilst older brother Monk played bass.

The material for Davey Plays Wes will be an exploration through Wes's life, and a celebration of the compositions created by him and his brothers. Ranging from bootlegs of arrangements played at local gigs in the Montgomery hometown of Indianapolis, to family albums such as "Montgomeryland" (1958) and of course including tracks from those colossal, defining albums such as "Full House" (1962) and "So Much Guitar" (1961.)
