Jenna Choi is a dedicated flautist currently based in Brisbane.
Originally from Melbourne, Jenna began her musical training at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS), where she met her teacher of many years, Mardi McSullea. In 2021, Jenna completed her Bachelor of Music, Degree with Honours at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, the University of Melbourne. Her studies at the University of Melbourne were supported by scholarships including the AG McMillen Arts Trust, Ellinor Gertrude Harris Bequest, and the Bebbington Prize. This year, Jenna has obtained her Master of Music Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University under the guidance of Alison Mitchell.
In the summer of 2019, Jenna travelled to England to learn from Trevor Wye. Here, she had the opportunity to spend a week in his teaching studio and work with other like-minded flute students from around the world.
A recent highlight of Jenna’s studies is The Complete Flute Course, led by Professor Emerita Leone Buyse (Professor of Flute at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University), James Kortum (Lecturer in Flute at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the University of Sydney), Andrew Macleod (Principal Piccolo of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) and Mardi McSullea (Former Head of Woodwind at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, the University of Melbourne). During the course, Jenna has participated in masterclasses, workshops, Alexander Technique lessons and various discussions and presentations. With gratitude to the teachers, Jenna has thoroughly enjoyed soaking up the experience in the beautiful Mount Macedon Ranges of Victoria.
In addition to these courses, Jenna has performed in masterclasses by Sally Walker (The Australian Flute Festival 2023), Adam Walker (Musica Viva), Michel Bellavance (MCM Woodwind Festival), Paul Edmund-Davies and Margaret Crawford.
Jenna is also a passionate teacher. She is currently a flute teacher at the Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) and St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Brisbane. Jenna feels that she is always learning alongside her students and strives to nurture their creativity and love for music, just as her teachers have fostered her musicianship throughout her development.
