our country’s good “Our Country’s Good” by Timberlake Wertenbaker; based on the novel The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally An Amateur Production BY ARRANGEMENT WITH ORiGiN™ THEATRICAL ON BEHALF OF SAMUEL FRENCH, LTD. 3RD YEAR STUDENTS Director: Kate Wilson

In the hell-hole that was Botany Bay in winter 1789 and on the occasion of the King’s Birthday the convicts, under the direction of a young Lieutenant of Marines, produced Farquhar’s sparkling comedy The Recruiting Officer. It became the first play ever performed in what would become Australia. Through the workings of art, the jailed and the jailers receive an emancipation of sorts and relief from the unendurable when hope triumphs over despair.

From London’s Royal Court, Our Country’s Good, based on Thomas Keneally’s novel The Playmaker, has become one of the most popular and enduring plays in the modern repertoire. It recently enjoyed a revival at the National Theatre in London.
