Welcome to Opera at Jimbour! 2021 is a momentous year of change for this jewel in the Queensland events calendar. For the very first time, we have been invited into the grounds and homestead of Jimbour House, for a uniquely intimate opera and chamber music experience. This new format reimagines how music might have been presented here during the 19th-century, and is a rare opportunity to see world-class performers up close. Secondly, Opera at Jimbour 2021 marks the beginning of the very first route along the Queensland Music Trails, a world-first music tourism initiative for Queensland. It is fitting that an event that has been part of the QMF stable since 2003 should also embody the bright future for music events across regional Queensland. Partnerships are at the heart of QMF’s work in regional Queensland. We are thrilled to collaborate with Opera Queensland and Ensemble Q to deliver this year’s program. QMF’s enduring partnership with Western Downs Regional Council remains the rock on which Opera at Jimbour is built.

Opera at Jimbour is one of several premier events we are proud to host here in the region, and we are delighted to partner with QMF to bring you another stellar weekend of phenomenal performances, top-notch local produce, and vibrant community experiences at the magnificent Jimbour House.
The impacts of the pandemic have provided incredible challenges, but thanks to the hard work of Queenslanders our state was one of the first to put in place a COVID Safe Event Framework which paved the way for events such as this one to take place.
We are delighted to showcase the wonderful place we call home, as you explore our rich history, big skies, unique visitor experiences, and welcoming community. While you’re here, I encourage you to explore our vibrant local businesses and get to know the people that make our region so special.
The Queensland Government is proud to support Opera at Jimbour, through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destinations Events Program and it is a feature on our It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. Events are an important part of our state’s economic recovery from the pandemic because they attract visitors to the region which stimulates the local economy and supports local jobs. Events are also an important opportunity for communities, friends, families and visitors to come together, creating community pride and reconnecting us.

Opera Queensland’s connection with QMF and Jimbour over the years has been important in our mission to share the wonder and joy of opera with audiences far and wide. The majesty and beauty of Jimbour House has made the perfect backdrop to performances that welcomed audiences onto the lawns to share in an afternoon of fine music making.
We are delighted to welcome you to a reimagined Opera at Jimbour experience. It’s been a pleasure to work with our colleagues at QMF, Ensemble Q and Griffith University to bring you a series of intimate concerts and recitals that invite you into rooms and spaces that are not often accessed by the public. Jimbour Homestead has a significant place in the history of Queensland, and music has been an important part of its own story. When you step onto the premises, either in the garden or within the homestead you can feel the love and care that has shaped the property over generations. Spaces for making music have been integrated into the very fabric of the building from its inception.
This year we move from the lawn into the gardens and buildings surrounding the House itself, immersing audiences in music and song that responds to the history of this place. It is a great privilege to experience and make music in such a unique and intimate setting.
From providing employment opportunities to inviting the children from the district to swim in the pool – both the Bell and Russell families have played a significant part in the development of the local community from the mid 1800s, and it is only fitting that once again the homestead is opening its doors and we are welcomed in.
We are thrilled to be collaborating on the production with the musicians of Ensemble Q, students from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, and an ensemble of some of Australia’s finest singers, led by our Resident Conductor, Dane Lam. Thank you to all who have made this event possible – the artists, the crew and the audiences – a commitment to producing and participating in work of this kind, is vital to making our culture and connections stronger. We hope this is the start of a new tradition, an annual gathering at Jimbour House that builds upon our great partnership with the QMF.
We recommend you spend some time between your musical moments to soak up the exquisite environment, and allow yourself to be transported into another world, a timelessness, where the landscape can soak into your bones, bringing with it both an aliveness and a peacefulness, the magic that is Jimbour.

The formal drawing room is the one room in the house that still has the original ceiling from 1877, and its beauty and grandeur has inspired a recital from Rosario La Spina that takes us on an autobiographical voyage through music written for the most celebrated singers of the past.
Accompanied by John Woods, and joined by guest artist soprano Rebecca Cassidy, Rosario brings his musical journey to life through performances of operatic arias, Neapolitan songs, and timeless classics. PERFORMANCE TIMES

The magical setting of Jimbour’s hangar, once home to Alex Russell’s four-seater plane, will resonate with Ensemble Q’s intimate program of chamber music, curated by Paul Dean, on Friday and Saturday evening.
Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Quintet is set alongside the gorgeous Four Songs for Voice and Violin, Op. 35 by Gustav Holst, featuring guest artist Rebecca Cassidy. The Saturday Gala brings together the talents of six of Australia’s finest singers, the Ensemble Q Orchestra with students from QCGU, and maestro Dane Lam in a program brimming with joy and beauty. On a musical odyssey that travels from Spain to ancient Egypt and Persia, China, India, Italy, and even a stop by the Brisbane River, you’ll swoon to the beauty and power of sublime music in a glorious outdoor setting.

Min is a Director and Creative Producer who has worked in a diverse range of creative leadership roles in performing arts, events management and community engagement, nationally and internationally. She has worked as the Artistic Director/ CEO for Shopfront Theatre for Young People and a Director, Creative Producer, and Dramaturg for a number of Australia’s leading arts and cultural organisations including Big h’Art, Contact Inc, Australian Art Orchestra, Arts Access Australia, Sydney Opera House, Sydney Theatre Company, the Australian National Playwrights Centre, Darwin Festival, and Bleach Festival.
Jason Barry-Smith’s study in Brisbane and internationally led him to a career on the Australian operatic stage, and he’s equally in demand as a singing teacher, conductor, arranger, and compère. He’s performed in some of Opera Queensland’s most successful productions over the past 27 years, and has also performed roles for the Brisbane Biennial, Brisbane Festival, Opera Australia’s Opera on the Beach, the Tokyo Arts Foundation, the State Opera of South Australia, New Zealand Opera, and Essgee Entertainment.
She currently works for Brisbane Festival as a Creative Producer, and most recently for Opera Queensland as Event Producer on the 2021 program launch at the Riverside Stage.

Australian conductor Dane Lam is Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of China’s Xi’an Symphony Orchestra. He was recently appointed Resident Conductor and Associate Music Director of Opera Queensland.
Soprano Rebecca Cassidy completed her Bachelor of Music at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University winning the Wagner Prize.
Soprano Eva Kong’s 2020/2021 engagements include the title role in Manon for Korean National Opera and The Countess in Le nozze di Figaro for Opera Queensland.
Recent engagements include La bohème and Don Giovanni for Opera Australia, Orfeo ed Euridice for Opera Queensland, La traviata and The Rake’s Progress for Scottish Opera and Cosí fan tutte and L’arlesiana for Opera Holland Park.
Her performances include the title role in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Anne Trulove in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress and Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss Jnr; other repertoire includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mozart’s Mass in C minor, Handel’s Saul and Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs.
In 2021, Dane Lam will lead seasons of Le nozze di Figaro in Brisbane, La clemenza di Tito and La rondine in Canberra and will conduct the Xi’an, Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras.
Rebecca was a Young Artist with Opera Queensland in 2020 where performed in live and online concerts, as well as understudying the role of Isolde for our production of Tristan und Isolde. She continues in the program in 2021. 18
Her most recent appearances for Opera Australia have included Gilda (Rigoletto), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Liu (Turandot) and Princess Linetta (The Love for Three Oranges); her performance as Laura (Luisa Miller) earned her a Green Room Award. Born in Korea and now based in Brisbane, Eva received a Helpmann Award Nomination and was a Green Room Award Winner for Best Female in a Supporting Role – both in 2014 for her commanding appearance as Madame Mao in Nixon in China for Victorian Opera.

Trained at the University of Southern Queensland, subsequently undertaking postgraduate study at the Queensland Conservatorium, where she was the recipient of awards including the Elizabeth Muir Postgraduate Scholarship. Hayley has enjoyed success in national competitions, including winning the GermanAustralian Opera Grant and contracts with the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the Landestheater Coburg. Operatic repertoire includes Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, the title role in Rinaldo, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Flora Bervoix in La traviata, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Valencienne in The Merry Widow, Prince Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus, and Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde.
New Zealand-born Jud Arthur has been Australianbased since 2003.
Argentine-Australian baritone José Carbó is one of the most exciting operatic artists of his generation; he has performed in the leading houses of the world including Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real Madrid, Los Angeles Opera, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Seattle Opera and Opera Australia.
He has sung over 40 operatic roles for Opera Australia, West Australian Opera, Victorian Opera, State Opera of South Australia and Opera Queensland as well as frequently returning to New Zealand Opera. A particular highlight for Jud was creating the roles of Hunding and Fafner in Opera Australia’s 2013 Der Ring des Nibelungen – for which he received critical acclaim. Concert performances have included the Requiems of Verdi, Mozart and Fauré, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s Creation with all the major Australasian Symphonies Orchestras.

In 2018, José toured Australia with superstar Sumi Jo and sang Germont (La traviata) for Opera Australia; in 2021, he sings Germont (La traviata) for Opera Australia and The Count (The Marriage of Figaro) for Opera Queensland. In 2015, José joined the roster of principal artists at The Metropolitan Opera, New York.

Australian Tenor, Bradley Daley has established an international career singing in England, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, France and Germany as well as all major Australian opera companies. Recent roles include Rodolfo, Pinkerton, Siegmund, Siegfried, Der Kaiser, Otello, Florestan, Walther (Die Meistersinger) and Barney (Summer of the Seventeenth Doll).
Rosario La Spina made his American debut as Rodolfo (La bohème) for Seattle Opera; he returned to Seattle as Radames (Aida) and made his first Canadian appearances in this same role.
John Woods was born in Stirling, Scotland and studied in Glasgow and Manchester.
Most recently, he has sung The Duke (Rigoletto) for Opera Queensland, Manrico (Il trovatore) for West Australian Opera, Pollione (Norma) and Canio (Pagliacci) for Victorian Opera, Samson (Samson et Dahlia) in Tokyo, Cavaradossi (Tosca), Turiddu (Cavalleria rusticana) and Canio for State Opera of South Australia and The Prince (The Love for Three Oranges), Turiddu, Canio and Calaf (Turandot) for Opera Australia. Future engagements include his debut as Siegmund in Opera Australia’s new production of Die Walküre. 20
He has worked in Manchester, Hong Kong and since 1992 at The Queensland Conservatorium. He also has a long-standing association with Opera Queensland. He has accompanied singers and instrumentalists throughout Britain, Europe and Australia, working with some of the finest singers of his generation. He has accompanied master classes given by several distinguished singers, including Dames Joan Sutherland, Janet Baker and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.

Brisbane born and bred clarinetist Paul Dean is regarded as one of Australia’s foremost musicians. He currently holds positions as Head of Winds at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, Co-Artistic Director of Ensemble Q and conductor of both the Queensland Youth Orchestra 2 and the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra. He was 2019 Composer in Residence with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, with the world premieres of his clarinet concerto and violin concerto with Jack Liebeck as soloist. His first Symphony will be performed by the Australian World Orchestra in June 2021.
Tasmanian born cellist Trish Dean (formerly O’Brien) is the co-Artistic Director and cellist of Ensemble Q. She has performed worldwide at many major venues including Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall and the Kennedy Centre and as a soloist at festivals across the globe including Oxford May Festival (UK), Georgetown Festival (Malaysia), Sydney Festival, Bangalow Music Festival and many more. Trish is passionate about creating opportunities for young musicians and is a driving force behind the Ensemble Q mentorship program.
Born in Japan, Natsuko began playing the violin at the age of three. She studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and Royal Northern College of Music in England and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She has appeared with many world-renowned orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, Odense Symphony (Denmark), Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa. Natsuko has recently accepted an engagement as CoConcertmaster of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She frequently appears as guest Concertmaster with other major orchestras in Australia and Asia.

Sing on – Toowoomba Chorus The Sing On choir is part of a creative recovery project funded by the Regional Arts Fund – Recovery Grants. Designed to regain and maintain the momentum that 2020 disrupted with cancelled programming, this choir is the first stage of a three stage project that will offer singers the opportunity to rehearse and perform classical repertoire and learn from a range of vocal coaches across the year.
