017 is set to be a massive year for Queensland Raceways at both circuits, our hugely popular theme days are back for another year, our race meetings are looking incredibly exciting and there’s still heaps more to do or see throughout 2017! We have 10 headline racing events between Lakeside Park and Queensland Raceway this year! Two giant historic bike racing weekends at Lakeside Park, with the introduction of the Lakeside TT as well as the Lord of the Lake. The FX Superbike double header at Queensland Raceway in July is a must attend for every two wheeled fan out there. The first four wheeled headline event is the Lakeside Tribute. The Lakeside Tribute will be a gigantic weekend at the historic track, and history will definitely come alive as this weekend will also be a Brock Tribute. There will be Brock cars on show, demonstration laps and Phil Brock is the patron of the event. There’s even a special evening on the Saturday night with Phil Brock and special guests that hardcore Brock fans can’t look past - grab a ticket and have dinner at the Lakeside Function room and listen to some of the best stories about motorsport legends. And we haven’t even mentioned the racing yet! Trans Ams, TA2s, QTCC, HQs and Classic Sports Sedans are all going to make an appearance over the weekend. The 18th and 19th of March is set to be a big one, and definitely a date to mark down in your calendar. Returning for the second year is the Queensland Endurance Championship, with two 300km races at Willowbank and Lakeside Park in 2017. Entries are open now for the cham4 | The QuaRterly magazine

pionship, and there are already interstate entrants who have put their hands up to fight for top honours again. It’s a grueling 300km around both Lakeside and Queensland Raceway, but walking away with a trophy sweetens it a bit. The Willowbank 300 is held over the Ipswich Festival of Cars weekend in the first week of May and the Lakeside 300 is in the last weekend of September.
2 Days of Thunder is back yet again with a Nissan tribute running throughout the weekend, it will be Nissan mad! Over 200 Nissans and Datsuns on show, an all Nissan race and classic Nissan race cars doing demonstrations laps. It’s going to be a big weekend out at Ipswich on the 17-18th of June! Rounding out a full year of hard racing will be the Ipswich Classic in Novemeber. Of course we always have the QRDC as well and we have 6 rounds running between Lakeside and Queensland Raceway from March up until November. Round 5 of the QRDC will again feature a European feel with the Italian Challenge on September 16th and 17th. And we’re not forgetting any of the two wheeled stuff either! This year we’re hosting more bike events at Lakeside Park with the introduction of the Lakeside TT in March! After the success of the Lord of the Lake the Lakeside TT is going a classic bike race meet open for Periods 2 to 6. There will also be 8 Classic Bike days at Lakeside Park for recreational riders to cruise the track on their historic machines. Also the QR- FX Club series and Race Your Mates at Queensland Raceway are returning for another year. The QR - FX Club series has 4 rounds over the year, and recreational Race Your Mates events will feature as part of those rounds as well as individual rounds at sprint

days across 2017. There’s plenty to do on two wheels at Queensland Raceways in 2017. In 2016 our theme days were record breaking with the most people through the gates at Lakeside for the All Aussie Father’s Day and we’re looking forward to more of the same in 2017. All theme days feature cruising, show ‘n’ shines and an 1/8th mile drag track challenge! As well as plenty of extra vendors and kids activities around the Lakeside Park circuit. The first of our theme days in 2017 is coming up quickly on March 5th! The All Aussie Fair Dinkum Day, is a showcase of all Australian made cars on track and off. It’s a place to gather, have a chat or just watch the cruise sessions full of 100% Australian manufactured machinery. If you have an Australian made car, come on down and enjoy! If you don’t maybe one of our other theme days during the year would be more your style. Over 2017 we will host an All American Day, Euro Day and Chrome Bar Bonanza - for cars originally fitted with chrome bars! If you don’t fit into one of those categories and still want to come and cruise Lakeside Park, Cruisefest is right up your alley! All theme days offer VIP packages for $100 that allows premium access to pit garage parking, 2 exclusive cruise sessions for VIPs, 4 gate entries, 1 car tunnel entry, and VIP only track access through the pits. The packages are excellent value and allows you to secure your cruise sessions, relax and enjoy your day! Not to mention our big events that are returning for another year at Queensland Raceways! If you’re not on for the full weekend - Powerplay is a single day event at Queensland Raceway held on the 11th of February and the 13th of May! There’s still more, with the Autumn Drift Matsuri already open for entries and filling up FAST, Queensland Raceway will host 4 major drifting events over the year. Our Autumn and Spring Matsuri’s as well as the Japanese Nationals and the DCA King of Nations Super Cup are all taking place and will offer competitors and spectators an awesome year of sideways action! Not to mention the recreational Friday Night Drift events every month on offer, that provide an opportunity to hone your skills or just have a good time. If you’re looking for an opportunity to get out on track throughout the year, you have a choice to make with different events and dates available. Roll Racing Brisbane offers a fun, relaxed vibe on a weekend to unwind and take to the track and take on your mates down the straight at Queensland Raceway. But if you’re looking to challenge yourself, or learn to drive on track our Sprint days are perfect. There are 36 over the year and all Sprints are timed! he early part of 2017 will see another classic bike race at the historic Lakeside circuit, which since it’s opening has been synonymous with historic bikes.
Following the growing success of the Lord of the Lake meet, and the biggest Lord of the Lake meeting in 2016, the Lakeside TT in early March (10th-12th) will be another showcase of incredible historic bike racing around the beautiful Lakeside Park circuit. Periods 2 to 6 (P6 bikes under 500cc) will be welcome to compete across the weekend, with races divided by category and power. The Lakeside TT also means that the sidecars will have two races this year at the Lakeside circuit. Sidecars draw a big crowd, and a deserved one at that, it’s awe inspiring watching them tackle the qldraceways.com.au
flowing format of Lakeside. It takes an extra special rider and swinger to be able to get this place right. Make sure you’ve got a comfy viewing spot up on the Eastern Loop, so you can catch all the action into Hungry and around the final corner. Bike racing at Lakeside has over half a century worth of history worth noting, and this event will surely be part of that history in the years to come. Sistering with the Lord of the Lake the Lakeside TT offers classic bike racers yet another opportunity to master the Lakeside track, and for spectators and historic bike fans, an extra 15 hours of viewing pleasure. In association with Queensland Early Motorcycle Sports Club (QEMSC), the Lakeside TT will be an epic show of all things historic bikes and while the Lord of the Lake still offers the most prestigious trophy and honours, accomplishing the Lakeside TT will still be a feat to be proud of. otta Grand Prix offers the perfect opportunity to get the whole family out on the race track, the relaxed fun atmosphere and friendly competition involved in the four 6 hour long events is a brilliant way to introduce your kids and the rest of your family and friends to recreational motoring. Each team in the Notta Grand Prix will consist of between four and six drivers, and the entry fee is under a grand for the whole team. The cumulative 24-hour event is here to get everyone into the right gear when it comes to recreational motoring - it isn’t a race, the fastest driver isn’t awarded at the end of the day. The Notta Grand Prix is more like a long distance-regularity and encourages all participants not to take the event too seriously - it’s all about having fun out on track. The concept behind Notta Grand Prix brings to the forefront affordable on track motoring, it’s about building a car as economically as you can to get in on the action and enjoying a day out with family and friends, testing yourselves on track. All ages are welcome with participants as young as twelve years old are encouraged to join in and have a go! After each of the Notta Grand Prix events participants will receive special medallions for their efforts. Each medallion is to be collected by participants and teams and at the end of the year teams with all four medallions receive a ‘Tuff Enuff for 24 hours’ trophy, commemorating their incredible efforts to get through all 24 hours of the Notta Grand Prix! There are also over 20 team trophies to be won in the spirit of Notta Grand Prix, with awards like the $tretchers (to the team with the highest number of laps for least amount of money) and The Bitsa (for the car that had the most parts replaced). Notta Grand Prix rewards consistency and style over sheer outright speed. In fact cars must not go 8 | The QuaRterly magazine
under a 70 second lap time, or they face penalties for going too quickly around the Lakeside Park track. This limit means that participants are brisk in their stints at Lakeside but not dangerously fast. Notta Grand Prix wants to bring generations of families together to work on cars and put them on the track, and it wants to take out the barriers from being able to achieve that - like participant’s budgets spiralling away as the series progresses. There are disincentives in place to reduce the risks of the top and fastest teams spending outrageously to try and ‘win’. Some uber-competitive types take things to the extreme to try and get to the top of the podium, as has been witnessed across all of motorsport in the last 100 years (*ahem* Suzuka, 1989), but Notta Grand Prix doesn’t have a place for those types. The ‘Challenge’, is available to participants who complete the full 6 hours of a Notta Grand Prix event that could see them drive home in another participant’s car if successful. A challenge can be lodged directly after an event against a car that has placed within 2 spots of a participant’s own car. It’s then drawn from a hat to see if the challenge is successful or not. If the participant who lodged the challenge is successful they hand over their keys and $2500 to the challenged participant, and then drive away in their new car. The system has been designed as the fairest way to ensure that spending is controlled. The message is clear to participants- don’t spend more than you can afford to lose. There’s plenty of exciting things to do on a Saturday in South East Queensland, but to save yourself and others from another trip to GOMA to see the latest exhibition from an artist you really don’t understand, it may be time to think about putting together a car and making memories that last with the people who matter.

ver the years the Lakeside Tribute has paid Tribute to the cars that have raced around the iconic North Brisbane circuit. The circuit has seen two Australian Grand Prix and superstars such as Jim Clark, Jack Brabham, Graham Hill and Stirling Moss all race during the 60's and 70's. In the 80's and 90's names such as Dick Johnson, Jim Richards, Mark Skaife have all taken their turn in the limelight on the circuit beside Lake Kurwongba, but one name has stood out as a legend among legends, a man whose record at Lakeside was below par on what he had achieved at other venues such as Mount Panorama, but never less still an impressive record, that man was Peter Brock. In 2017 Lakeside Park Raceway at its Lakeside Tribute race meeting on March 18-19 will feature a Tribute to Brock and will welcome event Patron Phil Brock to the event. Phil Brock the brother of Peter whom himself is an accomplished race driver will be on hand to run demonstrations in some of Peter's unique vehicles from over the years. 10 | The QuaRterly magazine
Peter Brock AM was most often associated with Holden for almost 40 years, although he raced cars of other manufacturers including BMW, Ford, Volvo, Porsche and Peugeot. He won the Bathurst 1000 endurance race nine times, the Sandown 500 touring car race nine times, the Australian Touring Car Championship three times, the Bathurst 24 Hour once and was inducted into the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame in 2001. Peter was garnished with the nickname Peter Perfect and the King of the Mountain for his unapparelled achievements at Mount Panorama, Bathurst. Brock's record at Lakeside was a total of 3 wins from 30 Australian Touring Car Championship starts but managed to get a podium 14 times or 46% of his races at Lakeside. His first win came in 1977 driving the Bill Paterson Torana, and he took victory again in 1980 in an HDT VB Commodore and 1983 in an HDT VH Commodore. Amazingly Brock only crashed once, in 1994 driving for the Hold-
en Racing Team. He had 4 races in a Volvo Super Tourer with his best result a 2nd in 1996. Phil Brock’s motorsport involvement was always as passionate as Peter's and with his lanky figure, he's affectionately known in the pit lane as “Split-Pin”. A long-held ambition to drive with his brother was realised in 1976 and 1977 with Team Brock achieving Sandown wins and a third and fourth at Bathurst. His impressive racing career started as the Victorian 6 Cylinder Touring Car Champion, leading to Team Brock, HDT Enduro drives and coming second in the Australian Production Car Championship in 1987. Along the way, he's also been a Stunt driver in various films, including Mad Max with Mel Gibson and Mission Impossible movies with Tom Cruise. So he's got plenty of colourful stories to share! Phil now sees his role as the "custodian" of the Brock Motorsport heritage and wants to encourage the fans at large to celebrate Peter's achievements, and

he is only too happy to discuss with the fans his brother's and his illustrious careers in Motorsport. The Lakeside Tribute will also feature the big Weekend at Brocky's - an Evening that relives the tales of Peter's career both on the track and off the track, hosted by Phil Brock and other well know motorsport identities. Phil who had established the role as custodian of the Brock memory will entertain guest with stories and anecdotes from both Peter and his careers. One car that will make its appearance as part of the Tribute is the VN Commodore that Peter Brock made his first start in the 5.0L V8 Supercar format after being converted from a Group A Commodore. The car will feature in the Tribute laps along with many other cars driven by Peter. qldraceways.com.au
Phil Brock was excited about the weekend, "The Lakeside Tribute will be a fantastic weekend to relive the memory of Peter Brock. With Tribute cars and original cars of Peter's both in abundance, the weekend will be one not to miss by any Motorsport fan." Racing categories in one of the biggest line ups seen at Lakeside that will help honour the Brock name includes Trans Ams, TA2's, Queensland Touring Cars, , Classic Sports Sedans, The Queensland Sports Car Championship, Historic Touring Cars and HQ Holden's. Many of these categories Peter Brock had a significant affinity too. Queensland Touring Car racing was massive in the 80's at Lakeside. Thousands upon thousands would flock to watch the Ford v Holden battle between Dick Johnson and
Peter Brock. Now is much different with many of the cars including Toranas, Commodores, Falcon and BMW's all still racing door to door. Peter's last circuit race was in a HQ Holden shared with his Brother Phil in 2015 at the Winton 4 hour. Peter in the twilight of his career returned to race with his brother after the famous Bathurst bust up where Phil was denied a Bathurst victory with Peter and Larry Perkins commandeering the 25 HDT Commodore and going on to take the win. Tickets for the Weekend at Brocky's on Saturday evening the 18th March are on sale for $100 (includes a three-course meal). Tickets for the Lakeside Classic are on sale for $20 Saturday, $30 Sunday, $40 Weekend pass and kids 12 and under are free.
