Since 1992, Queer Up North has played an important part in Manchester’s cultural scene, presenting and commissioning the very best in queer culture throughout the city. In 2010, we’re proud to still be here, with another tempting festival programme packed with theatre, cabaret, music, art and ideas. Let me take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in Queer Up North over the last 18 years: the artists, our venue partners, our funders – particularly Arts Council England North West, Manchester City Council and Manchester Airport – our staff and volunteers, and of course our audiences, without whom we couldn’t do what we do. Finally, I’d like to share some news with you. After this year’s festival, Queer Up North will undergo some changes. We will no longer stage an annual festival each May. However we are developing new plans that will still see us present and develop exciting queer work in Manchester. Sign up to our email newsletter to be the first to hear about the future plans of Queer Up North. ANDREW STOKES CHAIR, QUEER UP NORTH 2010 marks Queer Up North’s 18th Birthday. As we reach this remarkable milestone, we’re looking back and celebrating a handful of our biggest hits, with a new production of Starving Artists award winning Road Movie and a new version of Quarantine’s Susan & Darren in the iconic surrounds of Sachas Hotel. We remain committed as ever to bringing brand new work to Manchester. This year we have five world premieres and a further three UK premieres, including the launch of a major exhibition by Qasim Riza Shaheen.
At the heart of Queer Up North are genre-defying artists who make work that resists easy categorisation. So this guide isn’t split up into the usual categories you might find in a festival brochure – theatre, comedy, music and so on. Instead, we like each event to speak for itself. However, to help you navigate your way through the guide, here are some useful tips. PAGES 03 — 10 Here you will find our headliners – the must-see events that we are enormously proud to be presenting in Manchester. PAGES 11 — 15 A collection of groundbreaking performances that play with the role of the audience and challenge the kind of work Queer Up North presents. PAGES 16 — 23
A host of brilliant international performance talent visits our city once more, with the legendary Peggy Shaw returning to the festival and the Queer Up North debut of Europe’s hottest theatre company, Ontroerend Goed.
Step inside our beautiful 1940’s Spiegeltent to join a starry line-up of cabaret’s most provocative performers.
We’re also delighted to be working with Manchester Pride to welcome back the Queer Up North Spiegeltent. Join us over a very extended Bank Holiday weekend to enjoy the glamorous surrounds of our 1940’s wooden tent and a stellar line-up of cabaret’s brightest stars including Justin Bond, Taylor Mac, Meow Meow and many more.
Our small but perfectly formed ‘boutique’ events include club nights, debates, readings, films and BLAZE, our participatory programme.
There’s something here to tickle most fancies, and we look forward to celebrating our 18th Birthday with you. RIC WATTS FESTIVAL PRODUCER, QUEER UP NORTH

Susan Pritchard is Darren Pritchard’s mother. She is fifty-five and he is thirty. Darren lives at home with Susan, in the house he grew up in. Darren is a dancer and Susan is a cleaner. They dance together at home to John Holt, Althea and Donna and Diana Ross. You’d spot that they were mother and son instantly. To kickstart Queer Up North’s 18th Birthday celebrations, Susan and Darren prepare for one of their famous parties in the iconic surrounds of Sachas Hotel. Along the way there will be intimate conversation, devastation and a lovely selection of finger foods. Friends and neighbours might pop in. Come and join the party. Susan & Darren is an event with dancing that returns to the festival, updated and reinvented for 2010, as a special trailblazer event. This specially commissioned site-specific version, complete with buffet, bar and disco, is a must-see for fans and first-timers alike. Based in Manchester, Quarantine makes and tours work with both experienced performers and people who have never performed before, using personal histories and experiences to invent a theatrical form that’s tailored to each piece. The company makes remarkable theatre that often blurs, exchanges or even removes the distinction between spectator and performer. PRE-SHOW WORKSHOP Darren Pritchard will lead a dance workshop before each performance of Susan & Darren which will alter the course of that night’s show. All ages & levels of dance experience are welcome. Free to ticket-holders, but booking is essential. Please book by emailing susananddarren@queerupnorth.com with Susan & Darren in the title of the email and which night you’re attending and your ticket reference number in the base of your email. We’ll then send you a confirmation email for the workshop. There will be a BSL-interpreted performance on Fri 7 May. RELATED EVENTS ‘We Are Family’ exhibition by Gavin Parry (see page 29)

In collaboration with the acclaimed performance company Clod Ensemble, legendary New York performer Peggy Shaw returns to Queer Up North with a beautiful and poetic new show that takes the audience on a journey across the landscape of her own body. Renowned for her own gender-bending autobiographical work, Peggy recounts her extraordinary experiences of the medical profession from her perspective as a 65 year old lesbian grandmother. MUST The Inside Story weaves together the stories of a lifetime - giving birth on the way to Woodstock, her mother’s electric shock treatment in 1950’s America, the loss of a loved one – with live musicians performing a powerful score for piano, double bass and violin and a breathtaking backdrop of microscopic images. Praised during its run at the Edinburgh Festival, MUST cements Shaw’s position as one of the world’s most important queer artists. THREE Chris Goode, Chris Thorpe & Rachael Walton Queer Up North has teamed up with our friends at Bradford’s Development Lab to lay down an artistic gauntlet. As we ask ourselves what ‘queer’ might mean in 2010, we’ve commissioned three leading experimental theatre makers and challenged them to create short pieces that capture their own personal take on ‘queer’. All three are performed together for two nights only. CHRIS GOODE – WHERE YOU STAND How is your sense of who you are shaped by where you find yourself? Where You Stand is a cross between a performance, a poem and a puzzle, exploring ideas around (dis)orientation - both sexual and spatial. Chris Goode is a writer and theatre-maker who created the much-loved storytelling show The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley in last year’s festival. Where You Stand is a companion piece to Who You Are, which Chris recently made for Tate Modern. CHRIS THORPE – HIGH SPEED IMPACT. TEST NUMBER ONE. This is just a story about some things that happened to me once. It was all true. At least I think it’s true at the moment. There’ll be some stuff about aeroplanes. Most of the stories involve aeroplanes at some point. We’ll have to see where it goes. Chris Thorpe is a writer and performer from Manchester. As well as devising and performing Unlimited Theatre, Third Angel and others, he also writes plays and screenplays, and sometimes radio drama for the BBC. He is currently working on a new book of solo pieces called Eating Wasps.

RACHAEL WALTON – IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FULL STOPS Jogelen: to entertain by performing tricks. That’s exactly what Rachael will be trying to do in this one-woman piece; trying to keep everything together, all the balls in the air and not end up with egg on her face.

Queer Up North is 18 this year. To mark our coming of age we’ve asked Christopher Green (the talented chap behind outrageous comedy creations Tina C and Ida Barr) to throw us a bash. Rather than the sophisticated ‘do’ we were hoping for, he’s hired a social club called The Razzle, got a deal on a bumper crop of sausage rolls, hired the stripper and put up some streamers. It’s certainly going to be a night to remember! Our Big Birthday Bash is an interactive extravaganza and subversive homage to that most Northern of institutions, the Social Club. The party will be hosted by festival favourite Chris, who promises the first appearance anywhere of his new comedy character, magical stage hypnotist, Derek Diamond. He will be joined by a dream team of party guests, including Stockport housewife Mrs Barbara Nice on the Tombola; a new strip routine from Ursula Martinez, and a whole host of surprises that will have you questioning what’s real and what’s not. So dress up big, bring a gift and help Queer Up North celebrate in style.

Justin makes a triumphant return to Queer Up North with the must-see UK premiere of his critically acclaimed new show. The show includes hit singles We’ve Only Just Begun and Close To You, performing alongside Emmy Award winning pianist, Lance Horne. First hearing the album as a seven year old, Justin was profoundly affected by Karen Carpenter’s voice, describing it as “both reassuring and profoundly sad”. His deep connection with the material is evident in this sincere, respectful and highly personal homage that has stunned audiences in New York, San Francisco and the Sydney Opera House. An Obie and Bessie award winner, Justin Bond was recently named by Time Out as one of ‘New York’s Icons’. He starred in John Cameron Mitchell’s film Shortbus and as the Kiki half of the legendary performance duo Kiki & Herb, Justin headlined at Carnegie Hall, performed on and off Broadway and supported the Scissor Sisters on tour.

Brand new songs are accompanied by a visual feast of stunning costumes and projected films. Bourgeois & Maurice are a musical double act with style as sharp as their wit. Part-cabaret, part-theatre, part-catwalk freakshow, their songs blend unashamedly catchy pop hooks with bitingly satirical lyrics, performed on piano by the effortlessly glamorous femme fatale Maurice Maurice, with Georgeois Bourgeois on vocals. Our Lady J The Gospel of Dolly and Original Sin(g)
“VIRTUOSIC! OUR LADY J IS A BIG, BRASSY BLOND, WITH AN ABIDING LOVE OF GOSPEL” TIME OUT NEW YORK Our Lady J opened the 2009 Spiegeltent season in style with her uplifting and powerful show ‘Gospel for the Godless’, and we couldn’t resist inviting her back for more. This time round, she presents the UK premiere of ‘The Gospel of Dolly’, an annual event in NYC celebrating Dolly Parton’s most beloved gospel music. TALKING SHOP
is supported by The Kobler Trust and the Scotshill Trust.
As well as a banquet of performance, cabaret, music and art, Queer Up North is a place for ideas, discussion and debate about things that matter. Talking Shop is a feast of lectures and contextual events designed to stimulate the hungriest of minds and satisfy your intellectual cravings.
Queer question time “What will a new government mean for equality in the UK?”,“Do we really believe in free speech? Or only when we agree with its point of view?”,“In the 21st century, is there any longer a need for a festival like Queer Up North?” Following successful outings in 2007 and 2008, Queer Question Time returns to the festival, hosted by velvet voiced raconteur Tom Allen, star of BBC Radio 4’s The Correspondent and Bleak Expectations, and winner of the BBC New Comedy Award. Joining Tom will be a panel of esteemed thinkers and writers including Linda Bellos, equality activist and founder of Diversity Solutions; Matthew Todd, Editor of the UK’s best selling gay magazine Attitude; Angelia Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Politics and Sexuality at The University of Manchester; and infamous human rights activist Peter Tatchell who will tackle questions from the audience. Yet despite advances in both education and treatment, HIV infection rates are still inexplicably on the rise. Inspired by our new production of Starving Artists’ Road Movie, we take an in-depth look at the changing face of HIV and AIDS in popular culture over the last 18 years with short readings of plays, novels, poetry and film clips.
PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES In partnership with the University of Manchester’s Sexuality Summer School, we present a thought-provoking triple bill of lectures from leading academic minds. THE QUEER SPACE OF CHINA DAVID ENG (University of Pennsylvania) Mon 24 May | 5pm (90 mins) | University Place, Lecture Theatre A | Free – no booking neccessary A lecture exploring the contemporary emergence of gay and lesbian life in the People’s Republic of China in relation to liberal distinctions between public space and private desires. Following anthropologist Lisa Rofel’s recent work on expressive desire, David Eng investigates the ways in which certain self-identified Chinese gays and lesbians are positioning themselves as individuals who are uniquely capable of embracing their private desires and thus claim to represent the vanguard of a new modernity in China. Co-sponsored with Research Institute for Cosmpolitan Cultures, RICC SCREEN TESTS: ANDY WARHOL FILMS SUSAN SONTAG MANDY MERCK (ROYAL HOLLOWAY UNIVERSITY, LONDON) Tue 25 May | 5pm (90 mins) | University Place, Lecture Theatre A | Free – no booking neccessary A middle-class Jewish intellectual. He painted Coke bottles. She endorsed Absolut Vodka. He liked her look. She doubted his sincerity. They were both homosexual. In 1964 he filmed her portrait. In 1967 she called his work ‘inhuman’. THE ANGEL’S SONG: WHAT ABOUT QUEER MUSIC? RICHARD DYER (KINGS COLLEGE LONDON) Thu 27 May | 5pm (90 mins) | University Place, Lecture Theatre A | Free – no booking neccessary There has been much research in recent years into the presence of lesbians and gay men in music, but can one hear their sexuality in the music itself? Richard Dyer looks at some of the arguments around this question and focuses on the case of the film composer Nino Rota (most famous for his scores for Fellini and The Godfather films), trying to think of the music of queers more in terms of strategies of pleasing, passing and pastiche than in terms of sexual self-expression.
