Andrew Prior is London based and works in fine art and design. Other works involve the use of a wide range of media including paper, canvas and wood. Thursday 29th January Pre LGBT History Month Event: 7pm The Greeks & Greek Love A Radical Reappraisal of Homosexuality in Ancient Greece James Davidson (Author and Speaker) From Sappho to Alexander the Great, Ancient Greek civilisation is full of famous same-sex lovers. For all those who came after them, this inescapable feature has caused amusement, puzzlement and concern. Victorians preferred to focus on the intellectual side of Ancient Greek love, coyly ignoring the sexual aspect whilst later scholars sought to redress the balance by stressing the physical nature of 'Greek love'. James Davidson asks us to forget everything we thought we knew about the intimate culture of the Ancient Greeks and start again from scratch. The result is an engrossingly rich and diverse picture of Greek love which encompasses; bizarre Spartan sex-acts; evidence from recently discovered paintings and fragments of broken text; and throws new light on Greek civilisation as a whole. Wednesday 4th February 8-9pm Women who fancy older women and vice versa (1) Joan Ballington - Lesbian Discussion Group The Lesbian Discussion Group evening has been going for over 15 years and meets every Wednesday at Gays The Word Bookshop. Discussion is facilitated by Joan Ballington, one of the Directors of Gays the Word and the subjects discussed are many and varied. Participants also sometimes discuss new books, with the occasional author invited to speak about their work.

This is the first of four weekly discussions during History month and kicks off with the sometimes taboo topic of inter-generational relationships. Do you choose partners who are older or younger than you? Are you in a relationship with one now? How do your friends and family react? Have you faced discrimination within your own community? What is there to celebrate about being involved with someone from a different age group? All women who are lesbian, bisexual, trans, queer or questioning are welcome. Venue: Gay’s The Word

Saturday 7th February 10.30am Molly, Musical and Other ‘Off the hook’ Characters Guided Walk with Terry King There have been many terms used to describe gay men; ‘musical’ and ‘theatrical’ are two that re particularly relevant to Covent Garden. Actors in the 17thC were known for ‘debauchery’ and ‘unnatural practices’ and 2 companies of players (patented by Charles II during the Restoration) were active in the Covent Garden Area until the court moved to St James. Molly Houses and Coffee shops sprang up in their wake and, indeed there is still a gay venue at the site of a former Molly House in the area. More recently, gay men chained themselves to railings to protest Clause 28 in the Covent Garden area, whilst other features include the actor and actresses church where there are plaques to notables such as Noel Coward. Come and spend the morning with Terry King, a certified walking guide and discover what’s interesting about the area! Venue: Meet at Covent Garden Tube

Thursday 12th February 7pm The Amazing Mrs Shufflewick: The Life of Rex Jameson Patrick Newley (Author and Speaker) “Weak willed and easily lead, Mrs Shufflewick was a red-nosed, drunken old cockney who liked nothing better than to prop up the bar of her local while sipping large gin and tonics, guinness, port and lemon or anything else that came to hand. She would tell outrageous stories about her private life to anyone who would listen and invariably, at the end of a disastrously alcoholic evening, would end up stark naked - all but her hairnet - on top of a 29 bus. “ In real life Mrs Shufflewick was the glorious creation of Rex Jameson, a music hall great and one of radio and TV's most original and brilliant comics. Shy, difficult, bisexual and alcoholic, his private and public life often reached spectacular highs and appalling lows. Patrick Newley, who managed Jameson's later career, examines the life of the man who was lionised by comedians such as Bob Monkhouse, Barry Cryer, Danny La Rue and Barry Humphries.

Sunday 15th February The Lily Parr Exhibition Trophy Kick Off 3.30pm London Lesbian Kick Abouts, (UK); FC Arc en Ciel, (France); Valley Fire (USA) About 85 years ago, women footballers played in stadiums watched by thousands, in places such as Stamford Bridge, Goodison Park, and St. James Park. Over 60,000 people watched International matches held between the French and English women, who featured on cinema news broadcasts and had cigarette cards made in their image. A young superstar named Lily Parr ignited the public imagination and drew the highest praise imaginable from male contemporaries. However, in 1921, the English Football Association inexplicably banned the women from their pitches, saying the game of football was “quite unsuitable for females.” But Lily’s manager didn’t give up and took his team across the Atlantic. Banned on their arrival by the Canadian football authorities, they toured the USA instead. In Regents Park, on 15 February 2009, teams from England, USA and France will convene to honour Lily Parr and the heroic women who battled on against the ban.
