STARTING POINTS

This collection of paintings by Alex McIntyre conveys an instinctive response to the feel of earth and sky. Each piece captures remembered glimpses of a landscape’s mood through painted gesture and gesso.

Alex speaks of having a conversation with a painting until the point at which enough has been said and there is a peaceful point of departure. It is at this point of departure that a painting can begin fresh dialogue with new viewers, becoming a starting point again.

Working as a professional artist since 2007, Alex paints from a studio in Hertfordshire, UK. She makes paintings using light fast acrylic ink and traditional gesso ground on birch or poplar. Inspired by the world around her, she uses walking and running to observe changes of light, land and sky. Whilst painting in the studio she tries to re-capture the feel of a particular journey using sandpaper, wire wool and wood carving tools to carve into the gesso surface. The ink is pushed into and lifted from the surface to reveal layered marks. Her process combines the memory of movement and places with the visual and physical discoveries gained through playing with materials. The resulting paintings are a joyful exploration of space, light, movement and stillness, noise and silence.

Alex has exhibited widely in the UK and more recently in New York through The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art. She has work in private collections in the United States, Japan, Norway, Germany, France, Holland and across the UK. She completed a five-year artist fellowship at Digswell Arts (www.digswellartstrust.com) in autumn 2016. She has held AIR positions with Middlesex University 20082010 (with whom she also completed a Masters in Fine art 2007), Brent Museum and Archives (2010-11), English National Ballet (2013), and Watford Museum 2014.

Recent exhibitions include 13 editions of The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art in London and New York 2015-20; The Affordable Art Fair and Fresh Art Fair with Byard Art 2019, as well as exhibitions with Kendalls Fine Art, Bils and Rye Gallery, The Biscuit Factory, A2Arts, The Stone Space, and Quercus Gallery.
