/KARL MARX CLUB /Karl Marx is the most famous son of the city of Trier, his work, teachings and research are known worldwide and his history alone attracts 40,000 Chinese tourists every year. However, his work has always been controversial due to the political standpoints and, as a result, his person is not really appreciated in Trier. As controversial as his positions are, his international reputation as a philosopher and theorist is undisputed in the professional world. Karl Marx is considered a protagonist of the labor movement and a critic of bourgeois society and religion. In his time el the strengthening of the labour movement, which fought for rights and better living conditions for the Simple Man, and as a result new buildings of the Assembly were built, which we know today as people‘s houses and workers‘ clubs, as cultural, leisure and community centres. The idea of a place where, free from commercial, religious or political constraints, exchange in the form of meetings, discourses, lectures and exhibitions is more topical than ever today: there is a lack of undetermined, freely playable, communal spaces in the city. The Karl-Marx-Club should fill this vacuum. This house for meetings for the purpose of „cross-class“ exchange is to become a symbol of the new self-conception in the perception of both Karl Marx and the city of Trier for every citizen of the city and its visitors. In the Karl Marx Club people from all over the world can come together, gather, debate, produce, learn and pursue leisure activities. At the same time, the building serves to communicate Marx‘s work in the form of exhibitions, symposia, a library archive and a venue for events.

/site plan

/The pedestrian zone and the urban environment have a huge influence on the design of the Karl Marx Klub. The crystalline basic forms blend into the existing urban structure in a striking and selfconfident manner, thus calming the heterogeneous urban environment. The Karl Marx Klub, in conjunction with the outdoor facilities, extends the movement and circulation in Trier‘s city centre by creating a new square, which invites visitors to linger and provides for more quality of life in the centre. The entire space program is divided into two structures: the larger one has two floors and the smaller one only one floor.

/In the interior, there is a white concept that dominates all surfaces and thus provides a neutral background for exhibitions, daily business and events. The outer shell of white exposed concrete largely adopts this theme, but is interrupted by translucent mullioned facades. These create insights and outlooks and allow communication with the outside space.

Furthermore, there is a visual connection to the nearby cathedral. The envelope abstracts the volume and the storey mediates between closed and glazed wall surfaces and gives the building its urban, signaling effect without competing with the surrounding area. The result is a subtle interplay of translucence and transparency - both inside and out.

/DIGITAL AND ANALOG /The Gutleutviertel is a narrow strip in the inner city district of the city of Frankfurt am Main. It is bordered in the north-west by an access road adjoining the motorway and the Main River in the south-east. In terms of infrastructure and space, the quarter functions as a link, due to the proximity of the western port, which connects to the city centre, and the commercial areas downstream of the Main. The former intensive agricultural use of the area is particularly noticeable in the mixed development of the quarter. In our teamwork, we wanted to significantly increase the proportion of urban living space in the Gutleut quarter, create a link to other uses and densify and upgrade the quarter in terms of urban development. In the treatment of four different typologies, different emphases were set according to the respective potential uses. However, always with the aim of creating an attractive and exciting place that invites people to return and linger by consciously integrating nature and reducing the amount of traffic areas. This is illustrated here by the example of perimeter block development.

I. spanning of the property by voronoi structure.

II. integrate adaptation of voronio structure and tree trimmings into the design.

III. block formation by removing yards.

IV. height adjustment

/The Footprints have developed through the Voronoi network in Grasshopper. Due to the complexity and the high degree of confusion we simplified the net by straightening as well as by rasterizing. In order to generate green spaces we oriented ourselves towards the tree population and the Sommerhoffpark.

/analysis of all typologies /grade 1,3

/In the Ensemble module we have dealt with a completely new form of design - urban planning. The urban planning scale as well as the handling of parametric design, with the program „Grasshopper“, was a challenge for all of us at the beginning. By dealing with models and a lot of practice and effort we quickly got used to the new design strategy. However, we noticed that „Grasshoper“ is only suitable for the first design steps according to our current level of knowledge. When working out the typologies we concentrated on different factors. An essential part of this was always the stocktaking. In all designs we have adapted the plot to the stock and structured it accordingly. This enabled us to structure the plot and offer potential residents orientation on the plot. For example, we designed a continuation of the promenade along the banks of the Main, which invites you to linger. Furthermore, we designed green areas and paid attention to the preservation of the existing trees. This makes the site a central recreation area, which presents qualitative meeting and communication areas. Since the property is located in the immediate vicinity of the city, a direct traffic connection was not necessary. Nevertheless, the local public transport and nearby car parks provide a fast transport connection. Instead, our focus is on the future residents and users of the site. Consequently, we have declared this area as „Shared Space“, which also makes a small contribution to the environment. With our result, we have achieved our goal of creating an urban ensemble that includes many mixed uses, appeals to all generations and target groups and brings them together.

/THEATER NEXT TO BUNKER /At the Augustinerhof - directly between the town hall and the bunker - at a current parking lot - is the construction site for the stage bunkers. The building sees itself as a professional laboratory for experimental theatre in all its facets - a workshop stage opposite the municipal theatre. The bab forms the south-western end of Augustinerhof in a very prominent position. In keeping with its dedication to experimental and modern theatre, the architecture of the bab is to be conceived as a public and inviting house with laboratory character. An open and low-swelling entrance situation as well as the entire building design supports the interaction with the urban space on all levels. The curiosity of visitors is aroused by a high degree of transparency inside and outside the building. bab underlines the positive image of the city of Trier as an important cultural location in RhinelandPalatinate. Visitors should be able to experience the life and work of the protagonists. One goal is to have versatile event formats, such as experimental stage, spontaneous sessions, regular events and theatre workshops take place in the house and its surroundings, which are perceived by a broad public. The bab is open from 11.00 am until late at night. Events, practice groups and the cafĂŠ with its terrace ensure that the house and the square remain lively places to go even in the evening hours.

performance cube

/The aim was to create an extension of the City Theatre that works as an experimental workshop stage. Thus the building is positioned opposite the theatre building and captures the space created in between. The new square offers space to expand the various event formats from the inside out, creates a quality of stay through newly created green spaces

/site plan /ground floor

and is intended to appeal to the general public. Located at this square, the main entrance of the Performance Cube is located, while delivery can take place in a more hidden way in the south of the building. The open entrance situation, as well as the entire building design, supports the interaction with the urban space. The square floor space forms the basis of the building, which appears as a transparent cube through a curtain-type glass facade. Inside, a column construction and a continuous brace provide the bracing for the cube. The upper floors are divided into two intermediate floors and two complete upper floors. The roof is finally clad with glass panels and thus formed as the 5th facade. At 24m it marks the end of the building.

/The building is divided into three floors of 7.40 m each. The dark terrazzo flooring contrasts with the light-coloured walls. The beams, which are arranged in a construction grid of 1.50 x 1.50m, take up the loads of the floor slabs and thus enable open spaces without supports. The uppermost floor slab is formed by a 40cm thick reinforced concrete

slab, a gradient insulation, sealing sheets, a drainage level and finally forms an elevated 5th glass facade. The glass facade suspended in front of the mullion and transom construction initially consists of Okalux glazing. This is a sandwich package of glass and capillary structure to allow sufficient daylight to diffuse deep into the room while providing good protection against sunlight and glare. These are set in narrow aluminium frames and thus make up the facade appearance. The floor structure consists of the terrazzo flooring, 6 cm high flowing screed, an impact sound and pressure-resistant insulation underneath, a bituminous sheeting and finally the reinforced concrete ceiling. Concrete slabs adapted to the grid are provided for the exterior area.

/QUATERNARY DEVELOPMENT DORTMUND /The open spaces in the Mรถllerstrasse and Lange Strasse triangle in Dortmund The western inner city area forms a cornerstone of the south-eastern adjoining quarter, which with its quiet streets, predominant residential use on the upper floors and small shops on the ground floor offers great potential for development into an attractive residential area. The proximity to the city centre in the east and the Westpark on the other side of Mรถllerstraร e contribute to this. This potential is to be supported by the creation of an identity-giving neighbourhood square, which can also become an attraction for the wider surroundings. As can be discovered again and again in many examples, this goal can first be achieved by a special spatial design of the newly created square or several squares. In doing so, the distinctive shape of the square, which is formed by the surrounding buildings, its relations and openings to the surrounding streets, its scale and the proportions in relation to Width and height of the surrounding buildings of particular importance. Also, the uses, especially in the base zone, with the relationships to public space, naturally determine the character of the new square very strongly.

/Dortmund is the economic and commercial centre of Westphalia, which is characterized by a constant up and down in its city history. Today, however, Dortmund is trying to move from its status as an industrial city to a modern metropolis in which innovative living space plays an important role. The location of the property to

be built on is characterised by its walking distance to the city centre and the nearby Westpark.

The basis for my concept results from the edges of the space and visually continued axes of the immediate surroundings of the quarter. The ground floor is designed as a pedestal, which represents the basic urban form. From the 1st floor onwards, two further

/site plan /isometrics Urban development

building sections stand out. The cube oriented to the west with its total height of 25m functions as an address forming and inviting gesture. The eastern part of the building takes up the height of the directly adjacent buildings. Also to the west of the building complex is a first point of arrival, which merges into the actual quarter square, located to the south. Here a place of meeting, exchange and communication is created, which offers a central and quiet place for the quarter. Open, flexible spaces, urban gardening and outdoor seating are some of the qualities that invite you to linger. The full-area glazing of the cubes brings light and openness into the apartments and offers the residents a wide view of the park and the city - all the way to the Dortmunder U. Communal areas and kitchen gardens on the walk-on plinth create additional opportunities to get to know each other in the building and interact with each other.

/Housing itself has changed rapidly in Germany since the post-war years, but the classic principle of functional division has remained in place for the rooms. To do justice to future-oriented living, the flexibility of the apartments forms the basis of my concept. In the cube, the apartments are all equipped with basic furnishings. The room division is flexible according to

/4th floor plan + section /isometrics tyology

requirements. Each floor also has common areas that are connected to each other via air spaces. The other part of the building has 1-3 room apartments, which do not exceed a maximum size of 85 sqm. Each apartment unit has its own loggia, thus creating a private outdoor space in addition to the common area. The transparency of the facade can be individually regulated by external sun protection elements and internal curtains.
